Much like Benghazi, the Obama administration considers the Fast and Furious program that resulted in the death of Border Agent Brian Terry something that happened a long time ago. Still, echoes of the ATF’s program to let guns “walk” across the border into Mexico in order to track them to the heads of drug cartels will reverberate for a long time. Another death has just been attributed to one of the rifles that got “lost” somewhere along the way. According to the Los Angeles Times:

A high-powered rifle lost in the ATF’s Fast and Furious controversy was used to kill a Mexican police chief in the state of Jalisco earlier this year, according to internal Department of Justice records, suggesting that weapons from the failed gun-tracking operation have now made it into the hands of violent drug cartels deep inside Mexico.

Luis Lucio Rosales Astorga, the police chief in the city of Hostotipaquillo, was shot to death Jan. 29 when gunmen intercepted his patrol car and opened fire. Also killed was one of his bodyguards. His wife and a second bodyguard were wounded.

Local authorities said eight suspects in their 20s and 30s were arrested after police seized them nearby with a cache of weapons — rifles, grenades, handguns, helmets, bulletproof vests, uniforms and special communications equipment.

More than 200 people have been killed or wounded by guns lost in the Fast and Furious sting, according to Mexican officials.

there’ll be a new call to do away with “assault weapons” Monday. its America’s fault this has happened, our evil gun culture is the cause of this,,
NOT Holder and his Boss..NO WAY.

    • AzBorn

      Describe an “assault weapon(s)”

      • Douglas Morris

hard to do as there is no such thing. it’s a term made up by the main stream media to describe a select fire, sub caliber, light rifle with pistol grip and detachable box magazine.
the reason I put it in quotations is because it is a “non thing”
        I THINK we’re on the same side…

      • Clete Torres

From the left’s favorite reference point:

Popularization of the term “assault weapon” is attributed by many to the 1988 book “Assault Weapons and Accessories in America”, written by gun-control activist Josh Sugarmann, and to subsequent public reaction to the January 1989 Cleveland School massacre in Stockton, CA.[29] Sugarmann wrote:

Assault weapons—just like armor-piercing bullets, machine guns, and plastic firearms—are a new topic. The weapons’ menacing looks, coupled with the public’s confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons—anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun—can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons.[30][31]

The term is highly controversial especially amongst advocates of gun control and gun rights.[32] Gun rights activists consider it a misnomer intended to conflate civilian semi-automatic firearms with military assault rifles. Joseph P. Tartaro of the Second Amendment Foundation wrote in 1994, “One of the key elements of the anti-gun strategy to gull the public into supporting bans on the so-called ‘assault weapons’ is to foster confusion. As stated previously, the public does not know the difference between a full automatic and a semi-automatic firearm.”[9] Robert Crook, executive director of the Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen, said “the term ‘assault weapon,’ as used by the media, is a media invention.”[8]

Civilian semi-automatic rifles identified as “assault weapons” are no more powerful than many other semiautomatic rifles legally used for hunting throughout the United States; they do not shoot faster or have greater range.[33] Assault weapons are also sometimes called “black guns” or “black rifles”, due to the presence of black plastic parts in the place of wood for stocks and grips.[34] (emphasis mine)

Dennis Burke, a former U.S. attorney, retaliated against the primary whistleblower in the botched effort to trace the flow of thousands of guns to Mexico’s drug cartels, according to a newly released report from the Inspector General. Burke allegedly did so when he leaked information to Fox News and The New York Times in an effort to undermine the credibility of the whistleblower.IG Michael Horowitz also says there is evidence that Burke retaliated by disclosing a memo written by the whistleblower, federal agent John Dodson. The report called Burke’s decision “wholly unbefitting of a U.S. attorney.”

How about Operation Wide Receiver(OWR)? It was the first “gunwalking” sting undertaken by the ATF, under George Bush in 2006. In 2010, it was reported that guns from OWR were in the hands of street thugs and cartel criminals. If you’re mad at the program and it’s outcome, some blame should lay with the administration THAT STARTED THE PROGRAM. Fast and Furious was a sting operation under Project Gunrunner, which was set up by the Bush Administration. These are facts. You should educate yourself, but then again, it’s much more fun to hate the black man though, right? Remember when our country was founded, the Conservatives were the ones in the red coats.

    • The_Livewire

Hit all those talking points at once, eh?

Wide Receiver was discontinued when the tracking methods they implemented were shown to not work. It was also done with the consent and knowlege of the Mexican government, and is in no way connected to Fast and Frakked Up.

But hey, don’t let facts get in the way of your lies.

God given right? Where in the bible does god refer to any gun at all? I read the bible, and dont remember a single reference, just a lot of fairy tale shit about talking snakes and virgin whores. Seemed silly and juvenile. Bush set up the program. Fast and Furious was a sting under a program started by bush.

        • American_by_Choice

Well Mike, God didn’t list the rights he endowed to us. He provided us, instead, with the means to reason, wherein we recognize that due to the life he endowed to us, we are responsible to care for that life, part and parcel of which is the responsibility to dispatch those who would strip us of it, without a sound moral justification.

And Bush did not start Fast and Furious… your ignorance has you conflating the Bush Operation Widereceiver, which effectively tracked weapons to terrorists organizations.

A Federal program which starkly contrasts with Fast and Furious, a ‘behind the scenes’ attempt by the Obama regime to blame Americans for the 200 and climbing murders he and Holder committed, when they willfully sold guns to those they knew to be mass murderers, as a means to pass hysterical gun control measures…

But hey, such is the nature of evil… now isn’t it?

Mike, Was Dennis Burke, appointed by Obama, United States Attorney
for the District of Arizona during OWR? Was Lanny Breuer assistant Attorney General, appointed by Eric Holder, in charge of the Criminal Division during OWR? Was OWR an OCDETF investigation? Did OWR use wire taps that required review from the Criminal Division of the DOJ? You should read the Minority, Majority, and IG’s reports but until you have a clue as to what you are talking about it is best that you stick to just the race card.

“Operation Fast and Furious was not a local effort. It was the Justice Department’s flagship arms trafficking investigation for a year and a half. Justice Department headquarters in Washington approved it as part of the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program that put it under the control of the Arizona U.S. Attorney’s office (Dennis Burke). The OCDETF designation also meant Fast and Furious would be able to use advanced investigative techniques, such as wiretaps, which by law required senior headquarters officials to review operational details.”

      oversight(.)house(.)gov/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Update-on-Fast-and-Furious-with-attachment-FINAL.pdf

Just in case you think that Burke, all reports named him as a major part of the problem with F&F, is a nobody hick from Arizona I will take a moment to educate you… again. (Google Dennis Burke there has been a resent [5-20-13] report from the IG assigned to the F&F case. I know can you believe those investigations are still open?)

Burke had over 20 years of public service at both the Federal and State levels. Burke was a Senior Policy Analyst for the White House Domestic Policy Council during the Clinton Administration.Senator Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ) credited Burke and Rahm Emmanuel with fostering and getting the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban passed. He served as Chief of Staff to Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano from 2003 to 2008. Burke was recently a Senior Advisor to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. On July 10, 2009, Burke was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as the United States Attorney for the District of Arizona. He was confirmed by unanimous consent by the U.S. Senate on September 15, 2009. He was appointed to serve on the Attorney General’s
Advisory Committee (AGAC) which advises the Attorney General on policy,
management, and operational issues at the Department of Justice. He was also selected to be the Chair of the AGAC Subcommittee on Border and Immigration Law Enforcement and a member of two other AGAC subcommittees on Native American Issues and Civil Rights. Finally Burke was the first to step down over F&F.

Nothing to see here; just like Benghazi, the IRS , and all of the other “fake scandals, nothing to see here… move along. (The Obama motto… forward)… move along.

You mean racism has not been eradicated from the face of the earth, and this is a salient point to make about the Republican Party in contrast with the Democratic Party, because the DC has no racists?

Is this what you’re implying? You’re better off with the red coats line.

“Wow, somewhere from YOUR mind you equated Bush to a redneck. Never even thought it.”

          Sure.

“I love all my brothers and sisters and gladly accept diversity.”

The “benign” or “progressive” racism of the left.

“Not all criticism of the left is racist but a LOT of it is based on racism.”

That’s extremely subjective. And it’s not like there aren’t a lot of liars out there and then those who repeat those lies just because it “sounds about right.”

You’ll have to give me a specific example before I can comment constructively.

“Go through some posts here and read the comments, and you’ll see them oozing with that good ol’ fashioned, GOP racism.”

That’s the accusation repeated. I rarely if ever see any evidence. At most you can come up with a comment that supports the GOP and is also tainted with racism. There are more outright racist comments from the left at grassroots level AND among the leadership of the left, including Democratic Party elites.

“I would re post to show you how disgusting some of these folks are, but I dont spread hate by repeating such vile garbage.”

You’re so awesome. Except that saying “You should educate yourself, but then again, it’s much more fun to hate the black man though, right?” is destructive racism from you. So you’re in no position to critique anyone else’s racism with subjective remarks until you rectify that at least.

And your remark about the “red coats” is so lame. It’s difficult for me to hope you’ll be able to keep up with the conversation. If you want to conserve something, does it matter what that thing is?

Grow up a little bit and stop with the junior high school barbs. It makes us laugh but in the end it wastes a lot of time that could be spent more constructively.

          • AzBorn

Everybody likes a good story and the media gets payed to play it out. Grievance politics pays well on both sides. The Justice system may take your freedom for a few years but the Court of public opinion can take it forever. Due process has become; move along… nothing to see here. Is that a shiny thing over there.?

          • beebop1952

The media gets PAID. I know that using correct words and spelling is passé considering the results of the left raised school boy, but still, if you want to be thought reasonable cogent, you might make more effort. I didn’t appreciate that the D stands for Deflecting Arguments Not Supported by Democrat Talking Points. My question stands.

          • AzBorn

            Your question?
“Isn’t this what the left did to George Zimmerman?”

My answer is no. GZ got a much more fair trial in the court of public opinion than F&F did. The GZ case is easy to wrap your head around. F&F not so much. You think that I am to dumb to know where the butcher places his thumb? These cases are not even close. Everybody knows about the Zimmerman case… most think that F&F has 6 episodes where the car is the main character. Google Denis Burke.

          • mike_in_kosovo

GZ got a much more fair trial in the court of public opinion than F&F did.

Ok, now I *know* you’re just trolling, if you can say *THAT* with a straight face. GZ has been pilloried in the media since Day 1, while they (the media) have covered Zero’s azz six ways from Sunday.

          • AzBorn

            OK
you caught me but I really was not hiding and I didn’t say it with a strait face. F&F never got a fair trial in the court of public opinion because the media labeled a “witch hunt” from the get go. Claiming that Arizona’s week gun laws were to blame they used it to push their anti-second amendment agenda but did little to inform the public of the details of the case. Now in the case of Zimmerman we know just about everything except what his breath smelled like on the night of the incidence. The last report released on F&F, to the best of my knowledge, was released by the IG on 5-20-13… did you catch it in the news? No well it is probably not worth reading. (Google Burke)

          • Michelle

I’m not the one who made the comment about Obama and Holder being in prison, you might want to take that up with the person who actually made that comment.

Due process is the protection of a person’s Constitutional rights when they’ve been charged with or even suspected of committing a crime. Due process is to ensure the Government follows the law, does not abuse its power or the individual. When the Government (and this includes the judicial system) operates outside a person’s Constitutionally protected rights, that is a violation of due process.

Due process has absolutely, positively nothing to do with whether or not Obama and/or Holder should or should not be charged with crimes. Let me know if you remain confused about this and I’ll explain it again.

          • AzBorn

Fair enough but I still imagine that it would not be right to throw them in prison without due process

          • Michelle

I don’t think the original poster really meant Obama and Holder should be simply thrown in prison. I think they meant why haven’t they been charged with breaking the law, put on trial, convicted and then thrown in prison.

          • AzBorn

I tend to be very literal. Sorry about that. On the bright side
Holder was found guilty of both criminal and civil contempt of Congress. The civil case is on going and is seeking to force the release of some of the documents the Committee subpoenaed. Who knows what is in them but Holder does
not want them seen. There are also FOIA cases that are making their way through the courts. The last shoe in the F&F case has not dropped…yet.

          • Michelle

No worries, I tend to be literal too. We’re on the same page about Holder – let’s hope he’s held accountable for the laws he’s broken (even beyond F&F) at some point. He knows he needs to resign, the country has no confidence in him, but he’s playing the game – he won’t resign until after the 2014 mid-term elections because if he does it before then, it makes Dems look really, really bad.

          • AzBorn

I don’t think that his ego would let him resign. I have no doubt
that the President would pardon him if he were to face prison time. Unfortunately I really do not see that happening before the mid-terms. I think that he has damaged the DOJ’s reputation by enforcing the law based on political ideology and not the rule of law. It seems that history will regard Eric Holder and the current Administration very poorly in this regard.

      • beebop1952

Due to process. A sloooooooow one at that.

      • Clete Torres

        More like OVERdue process.

    • Bathing Suit Area

Double negative, bro. They are already not in prison.

  • Bathing Suit Area

I’m having a little trouble here with the cognitive dissonance between, “Criminals will always be able to get guns, so governments should never even try to stop them!” and “OMG, this government is so evil because they didn’t stop these criminals from getting guns!”

    • objectivefactsmatter

“I’m having a little trouble here with the cognitive dissonance between, “Criminals will always be able to get guns, so governments should never even try to stop them!””

As usual, your dissonance can be traced back to your poor comprehension.

Gun *crimes* are already illegal. And guns are already regulated quite enough so that enforcing existing laws seems to be the key to that whole “law and order” thang that leftists are so, so selective about.

    • AzBorn

Then why can you vote in Texas with a CCL but not a student ID?? Could that be a “gun crime”? Or a Vote crime?
How many unenforceable laws do you need to ensure a safe society? Why should the Government stop criminals from getting firearms except where otherwise legal?

      • John Rebori

Because a CCL is a government issued ID, while your school ID is not.

Perhaps that is too nuanced a difference for BSA?

        • AzBorn

You don’t need to be fingerprinted for a student ID and you can have more than one valid student ID at a time. Isn’t voting twice your civic duty?

    • NRPax

First off, no one has ever said “Criminals will always be able to get guns, so governments should never even try to stop them!” What is being said is that “Criminals will always be able to get guns, so the government should stop getting in the way of law-abiding citizens owning them.” There are already enough laws on the books. Speaking new ones into existence won’t suddenly make criminals think “I should straighten out and stop breaking the law.”

Now let’s look at your second round of silliness: “OMG, this government is so evil because they didn’t stop these criminals from getting guns!”

The evil in this is in several parts:
      1. They did not coordinate anything with the Mexican government.
      2. There was no accountability for the weapons.
      3. They ordered gun dealers to go ahead with transactions that looked suspicious.
      4. When things went wrong, they tried to blame the previous administration for their own mistake.

And as AzBorn asked you, how many laws should we have before you feel safe?

      • Bathing Suit Area

So America has to ask permission from Mexico before attempting a sting op now?

        • NRPax

When you are conducting a sting that carries over to the borders of another country, it’s usually good policy to keep the government of said country informed. In other words: The difference between the Bush Administration and the Obama Administration.

        • AzBorn

If the Mexican government was allowing meth to be smuggled into America as part of a sting operation do you think that the US government would like to know about it?

    • alanstorm

The dissonance exists only in your head, because both of your premises are wrong. How shocking. For the slow among us, i.e. you, how are the correct formulations:

      1. “Criminals will always be able to get guns, which does not constitute a reason for government to interfere with law-abiding gun owners.”

      2. “This government is evil because it actively supplied guns to criminals – and then when it didn’t work, they covered it up instead of coming clean.”

As the smarter among us, i.e. not you, can see, the two statements have little to do with each other. You’re welcome! Come on back if you have dificulties with any other simple questions!

    • mike_in_kosovo

I’m having a little trouble here with the cognitive dissonance between,
“Criminals will always be able to get guns, so governments should never
      even try to stop them!”

Probably because nobody has said that….except #LowInfoLibs trying to skew the argument by portraying that as their opponent’s viewpoint. You know…like you did here.

    • AzBorn

Eric heard it in the MSM just like you and I. Granted it was the ATF’s first OCDETF operation but why should that have caught E. Holders attention? Do you think that E. Holder reads all of his email? Lanny Breuer can not be bothered to read wire-tap applications, as required by law, that cross his desk and Burke would not prosecute a case if it fell in his lap and you ask why E, Holder has a job? Issa’s witch hunt got two out of three… that is why Holders still stands. Nothing to see… move along. FORWARD

    • Bathing Suit Area

How did his involvement change anything? Criminals can just get whatever guns they want ask the time anyway, right?

      • alanstorm

Holy crap! you’re even denser than usual today. If you acquire a weapon from someone besides me, I am not involved.

if you acquire a weapon from me, and I have reason to believe you intend to use it in a crime, I just became an accomplice.

        Get it now?

      • AzBorn

Then why should the ATF enforce any gun laws? The ATF in this case told the FFL’s to sell weapons to known criminals. Don’t you see a problem with that?
