Former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is celebrating the Second Amendment this week by kicking off her seven-state “Rights and Responsibilities Tour.” In an op-ed published in USA Today, Giffords explained that “it will be a patriotic victory when the Senate demonstrates the American values of practicality and responsibility by voting again on background checks — and passing them this time.”
Here’s where the celebration comes in: “We’ll celebrate those who vote yes,” she concludes, “and we’ll notice those who ignored their constituents.” As for those constituents, Giffords is still citing a CBS News/New York Times poll from January claiming 92 percent support for “background checks for all potential gun buyers.”
To prove she’s serious about the right to bear arms, Giffords and husband Mark Kelly kicked off the tour Monday by visiting a gun range in Las Vegas, where Giffords fired a gun for the first time since she was shot in 2011.
Her visit to the range might have backfired with supporters who see nothing to celebrate.
If Gabby Giffords is celebrating the 2nd Amendment, there truly is no hope.
