Smithfield Foods today joined Food Network in severing ties with chef Paula Deen, and QVC said in a statement that the network has no immediate plans for Deen to appear. There’s always Twitter, though, and this evening Deen tweeted her appreciation to supporters. While not condoning her words, actor Kevin Sorbo today pointed out what had many scratching their heads a few months back. Remember when Matt Drudge was accused of being racist for pointing out Quentin Tarantino’s use of the N-word in “Django Unchained”?

From Facebook:

And this is why I love the hypocrisy of America…..Oh, and thank God none of us have EVER been racist. Only this woman. Bad woman. Bad.

Did America Learn Nothing from the Juan Williams Affair?!? When Libs want to eat their own… LET THEM! How’s Defending Juan Williams Working OUT?!?!?

    #NOrinos2014

    God Bless America!

    • Cyle Coleman

Outstanding point, Paratis. We tend to feel sorry for those leftists that are “wronged”, always forgetting they will do exactly what Juan is doing, punching us in the eye every chance they get. Paula and Juan are nothing but useful idiots. I personally am tired of feeling sorry for them, and about the best I can do is wish them no ill.

As his thanks, Juan is now biting the Conservative hands that fed him. Typical.

      • Jeremy

Yeah and drinking record amounts of Obama Kool Aid.

      • Jeremy

Yeah and drinking record amounts of Obama Kool Aid.

      • sandyaz

Take heart, Juan Williams’ sons are Conservative. They have a great deal of common sense.

      • paulinnaples

Juan was a contributor to Fox before he started with NPR.

        • Leigh

And Juan was on CNN’s Crossfire as the liberal moderator years before Fox News even came into existence.

  • Lady_Clare

Having read her deposition, she seems remarkably tone deaf about her comments with no idea how they were going to come across. The defense of her has that same tone deaf quality to it, sad to say. If everyone in America was racist, it STILL wouldn’t be okay. This, “But Billy and Sally do it, too!” defense sounds just a little threadbare.

    • stargazeman

“But Farrakhan, Jesse, Lil Wayne, Chris Rock, and Al do it too”….

You the kind of person get innocent people hurt—ignoring and not even pointing out where the bad areas of a town are for out of town visitors to avoid. You get us all killed with your nonsense.

      • TocksNedlog

        To whom are you speaking?

        • BigDogJunction

You see the little arrow, after his name? It points to “Lady_Clare”?

          That would be a clue.

          • TocksNedlog

Yeah, thank you. I was referring to the false accusation/ad hom attack being made against Lady_Clare.

          • $23901791

False accusation/ad hominem? You mean “You the kind of person get innocent people hurt”? That is stargazeman’s description of his opinion of the consequences of Lady_Clare’s opinion regarding political correctness. For it to have been a false accusation he would have had to say, directly, “it’s your fault so and so got killed”. For it to have been ad hominem he would have had to say, “well, your opinion doesn’t count because you’re stupid/racist/ignorant/etc.”

Don’t throw around words divorced of their meaning.

          • TocksNedlog

Hey, based on the number of down votes I’ll gladly admit that I might have misinterpreted the meaning of Lady_Clare’s comment.

          • DWAAP

Thank you, so needed the laugh today!

    • CrashFroelich

So true, Clare. Time to reorganize TSA as Thought Security Administration and count everyone who ever had any non-PC thought or said one non-PC word at any point in their lives as enemies of the state and persecute them in perpetuity. Except judgmental, self-righteous solipsists like yourself, of course.

      • Rightturn

This has nothing to do with “the state.” She ‘lost her job’ because it was deemed to be a better business decision that would ultimately yield higher profits for the Food Network that decided not to renew her contract. But alas, I know that people like yourself who hate capitalism may not be able to understand such a concept.

        • $23901791

Political correctness is a societal (not a state) ill that, nonetheless, gives the state all the power in the long term for deeming certain words “wrong” to the degree that it can become acceptable to legislate against the use of these “wrong” words.

Food Network’s choice may have been right, but America’s reaction to Paula Deen, which Food Network’s decision was based on, was faux outrage and hypocrisy, pure and simple.

And for TocksNedlog, THIS “but alas, I know that people like yourself who hate capitalism may not be able to understand such a concept” is an ad hominem. You see, ad hominem is not “being rude” or “mean” it is a logical fallacy where you discount a person’s argument by implying they are incapable having a valuable opinion by grace of being something you disapprove of.

        • Guest

Could you possibly have missed the point by a wider margin or be more immune to irony? If you read all the words and avoid making ridiculous assumptions, you avoid looking like an ass at the speed of light.

      • Honu425

Good response, even if I did have to dive for the dictionary!!

      • Tman95

“Solipsist” My new word for the day. You really should send that one to O’Reilly. Oh, and I’m not being sarcastic. I learned something today that only myself can verify.

    • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

I don’t condone her saying that stuff but are we really willing to live in a world where we can lose our jobs over every little ignorant thing we said in private that we wish we hadn’t decades ago that some enemy dug up? We can all sit here on our soapboxes about it but none of our hands are clean when it comes to ever saying something we wish we hadn’t. Now if she was actually still saying racist things and discriminating based on race then that would be a different story.

      • Harry A

Truthfully, the rest of us already live in that world. Perhaps not something done decades ago, but people are fired all the time for what they do in their private life. Just look at the number of people who have been fired because of facebook posts during their private hours.

Plus Paula Deen was in the special position of being the face of her brand, they were selling her. And if it looks like she could hurt business, which it certainly does, than she can be let go. Maybe people shouldn’t have been as outraged as they were (it was suggested by Al Sharpton of all people that we not judge her because of her distant past), but people were outraged and it was clear she was going to hurt Food Network sales so they let her go.

        • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

I am talking about stuff that happened decades ago. Should you be fired for something you said 20 or 30 years ago and don’t believe now? It also doesn’t sound like her business has been hurt because people have been packing her restaurants to show their support since the scandal broke, the companies that are severing their ties with her are going to lose money.

          • plumberskid

            One can only hope….

        • Tina Thomas

I don’t think it’s going to hurt her. For one, the lawsuit filed by Ms. Jackson should have been against Bubba Hiers (read the complaint)-not her. That’s where her real beef is. Not only that, if it weren’t for Paula Deen “Smithfield” (which is now bought out by the Chinese) would have went under. Dawg the Bounty Hunter came back and so will she. Martha Stewart survived her bull also. The only reason Paula Deen got singled out is because she is a SWF–meaning Southern White Female and these stories are often used to stereotype the entire south. That’s what’s really going on here.

          • grais

Bubba hasn’t got the deep pockets.
I hope the lawsuit goes nowhere.

          • Gayle Terry

And money is what “Ms Jackson” wants out of that cracker, after all.

          • TedBurhenn

In using the words “Real Beef” are you not being insensitive to the “Veggies”? (just kidding)

          • Ms Monique

            Amen, sistah!!

        • jentap

You couldn’t convince me that Al Sharpton has never said “cracker” or “honkey” in his life time. He would be as big of a hypocrite as all the others if he slammed her because of her distant past.

          • encierro

What did Sharpton call Twana Brawley’s supposed perverted attackers?

          • Bunnie Muzzleman Berryman

Yeah but only white people can be prejudiced!!!! Just saying.

          • StuckInBlueMaryland

He had said it many times – right out front with it – but honkey and cracker is ok because don’t ya know, white people don’t have feelings and of course all of us had such an easy time of it in our lives…..yeah right.

          • Jonathon Hero

The good “”reverend”” (double quotations) Al Sharpton speaking at Kent University in 1994, sharing his view of history:

““White folks was in the caves
while we [blacks] was building empires … We built pyramids before Donald
Trump ever knew what architecture was … we taught philosophy and
astrology and mathematics before Socrates and them Greek homos ever got
            around to it.”

You know, the good ole days.

          • Moto

And Sharpton’s words are obviously true because the Congolese today live in Jetson’s domes and soar to work in flying cars. Who can forget that the Somalian flag STILL waves on the moon where it was planted in 1911 above a placard that says “Yo,we beez cummin in peece fer all mankind,ya heard?”.

Meanwhile, back in reality, neither Africans nor people of African descent anywhere in the world demonstrate any significant interest or aptitude for architecture, astrology, mathematics, or even whatever their first language happens to be, demonstrating a profound ineptitude for American English,British English, French, German, Swedish, or Dutch, and speaking some form of ebonics instead.

It is extremely improbable that black people designed the pyramids or had any knowledge of mathematics,it was more likely semites or Asiatic people who were responsible.

If black people had this knowledge, why would they not even have the plow yet in some of their countries? Why do they just dig in the ground with sticks when they aren’t living as hunter/gatherers like troglodytes?

Who would have the knowledge to build an underground necropolis and then go “You know what? We really like digging in the ground with sticks, stealing kills from lions, and dying of malaria better…”?

          • missannthrope

Yeah. George Washington Carver never existed. James West holds zero patents. Emmett Chappelle never helped with the study of UTIs. Philip Emeagwali is irrelevant, as he’s not an engineer, building bridges in Africa. Patricia Bath must be white, if she invented something medical. And Neil DeGrasse Tyson is a figment of our imaginations. This is just a very short list. There are many more black people in the sciences. Educate yourself, instead of spouting racism.

          • Moto

It isn’t racism. It is a simple fact.

You may not like the facts, but the facts are that sub-saharan Africans have an average IQ of 64. They did not discover mathematics, astrology, or architecture.

There is exactly zero possibility that a person with an IQ considered below functionally retarded by Western medicine invented anything. It would be a miracle to train such a person to use a toilet rather than crap in their pants.

All of those people you mention existed (as far as I can tell, I’ve never heard of many of them), but a large part of their supposed contributions have been either hyped up or completely invented from scratch. Take Carver for instance, he is credited with inventing peanut butter. He did not invent the idea of mashing peanuts into paste, the indians who lived in the Americas where peanuts grow were doing it 1000 years before he was born. We have found bowls containing the paste and the name for it is even known, from cuneiform glyphics. This is intuitive.

Re: patents It doesn’t matter how many patents you hold if no one ever uses your inventions. I can hold a patent for a machine that kicks you in the balls every time you push a button. Who wants to buy my miraculous labor saving device?

Emmet Chappelle had medical knowledge discovered by white people. African “medicine” is where they drill a hole in your skull with a rock and let the demons out.

“Philip Emeagwali is irrelevant, as he’s not an engineer, building bridges in Africa.”

Never heard of him. Must be really accomplished… Regardless, the mathematics he uses were not developed by Africans. It is a matter of historic record that Africans have never developed an original written language of their own, nor a system of mathematics. To accept the Sharpton proposition, one would literally have to believe that white people stole Africans’ technology….RIGHT OUT OF THEIR HEADS so that they left no widespread technological achievements anywhere on the globe, ever.

“Patricia Bath must be white, if she invented something medical.”

Never said that. Whites invented Western medicine. If Patricia Bath actually invented “something medical” it was something related to Western medicine, correct? It wasn’t a rock to drill into someone’s skull for demon-purging? Then she owes her unnamed invention to Western medical innovations. If her invention is widely used or ever was in the West by our doctors, she is accomplished at Western medicine. Not African medicine. Not African-American medicine. Western medicine.

“This is just a very short list. There are many more black people in the sciences.”

Ok. Give me the long list.

Pile all of them right up here. I want you to really wear yourself out building up this giant mountain of evidence that black people have,in fact, participated in Western science.

And then,at the end of that, I will tell you the same thing I said before you troubled yourself and it will still be every bit as true:

“Meanwhile, back in reality, neither Africans nor people of African descent anywhere in the world demonstrate any significant interest or aptitude for architecture, astrology, mathematics, or even whatever their first language happens to be, demonstrating a profound ineptitude for American English,British English, French, German, Swedish, or Dutch, and speaking some form of ebonics instead.”

It is far more common for a black kid who is reading a book to be beat up for “acting white” by his peers than it is for him to win a nobel prize. This is not because whites are racist against him, it is because his people have lower IQ’s.

I never stated that it is impossible for a black (Westerner) to invent or discover anything. It is,however, true that they show no SIGNIFICANT interest or aptitude for it, compared to say, Jews.

Jews are about 3% of the world’s population and hold 20% of Nobel Prizes. Africans are a much bigger percentage of the Earth’s population and they DO NOT hold the other 80% of Nobel Prizes. Not even close. They are responsible for about 80% of crime in America, though.

Look it up for yourself. Don’t be afraid of the facts. The truth is never racist.

          • Ava

This is one of the most bigoted comments I have ever read. No matter the ethnicity, we are all God’s creatures and have the ability to thrive. Some in sciences, some in art, some intellectually, some in athletics, music, literature, or arts. We all have different levels of competencies in different areas, but – good or bad – it is NOT based on race.

How can you say that Africans did not build the pyramids based on how you perceive Africans today? I guess the Mayan pyramids were built by aliens based on Mexico today? They couldn’t have done it. Maybe the Romans or the Greeks did not really contribute anything to mathematics. I mean, the Italian and Greek economies are failing so clearly the concept of addition and subtraction eludes them.

Empires are cyclical, they rise and fall and there is always another one to take their place. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and that is always the cause of the fall. It is also what prevents these societies from ever reaching the level they once held, some more than others.

Are there huge problems in Africa? Absolutely! And there are many reasons for that, including colonialism, government corruption, civil wars, genocides and more recently Islamism. But not based solely on the fact that they are black.

          • missannthrope

Moto, you are totally ignoring the medical history of white people. Remember the four humors? A good bit of the history of medicine and religion is barbaric.

If you want to bring the Bell Curve into this, may I remind you that the average IQ in the Philippines is only 86, well below the Asian average? Over population, lack of education and religious fundamentalism have been known to drop average IQs. And given all of those are problems in sub-Sahara Africa, combined with governments who wish to keep people stupid, a European IQ test isn’t going to work there. If you’re talking about the research from that Irish professor who put a book out a few years ago, even his research is flawed, he made up numbers for countries based on countries that weren’t even close to them.

What I don’t get is, I named some award winning people in my last post and you have never heard of them, so their accomplishments are diminished because they’re black? But in your mind, that’s not racist, that’s common sense?

Otis Boykin invented an electronic resistor that was a vast improvement on previous models and is the reason you can afford a computer or TV today. His resistor brought the costs of those things way down.

Charles B. Brooks not only invented a ticket punch that was designed to not litter, but he is the one who invented a new, improved street sweeper, the design of which is still in use, with the forward brushes.

Marie Brown invented the first home video security system.

Norman Buckner invented so much for GM as an engineer, I’m not even going to count his patents.

If you’ve never heard of Benjamin Carson, you know nothing about neurosurgery. He has published extensively and is a true American success story. Born into poverty, father abandoned the family, did well in school and is one of the top surgeons in the country.

Donald Cotton invented nuclear reactor propellants.

Without Mark Dean, the words, “IBM compatible” never would have happened. He is in the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Charles Richard Drew is the reason we have blood banks. He created the first one.

Fredrick Jones invented the first refrigeration system used in tractor trailers for long halls. Say thank you to a black man, for your ability to buy fresh produce grown across the country.

Percy Lavon Julian didn’t just invent that foam in fire extinguishers. He synthesized cortisone for arthritis patients and physostigmine for glaucoma patients.

So do I really need to go on? There are so many more black inventors, I didn’t even touch on professors, lawyers, astronomers, etc. I would hope you get the point, instead of just spewing black people are stupid, because you read a book that says so.

          • Ava

I am so glad you are able to counter Moto’s ignorance with facts. However, it is sad that in this day and age we still have to justify ourselves by saying, ‘look at all the things that Black people have done’ in order to dissuade these types of views or somehow prove our worth.

To say Blacks are stupid and Jews are smart is ridiculous. Every race has individuals who are good and bad, smart and stupid. It’s only narrow-minded bigots who colour everyone with the same brush.

People of ALL races have contributed to society, PERIOD. It’s about time people like Moto finally realize that.

          • RylanG

It is very sad indeed and there is much blame to go around. How often do we hear of or see the educated black man or woman? Instead we see and hear Al Sharpton or any of the various angry musicians who are black. In college I got a tutor for my third semester of Calculus and he was a PhD Physics student from Zaire and is now a professor. At the time I was a little surprised to be tutored by a black man in higher math and it was a good thing for me to experience. Unfortunately I think that his chances of going so high if he had been born in this country would have been slimmer. Education was/is valued where he grew up; sadly it is also quite routinely blocked from the populace by corruption and poverty. Given the right opportunities and environment almost any person of any race can succeed and flourish if they desire it and work at it.

          • Ava

Exactly my point. Thank you, RylanG!

          • Leigh

Yep, those Africans are so much more advanced that other races, yet they cannot feed themselves without having a humanitarian relief effort every 5-10 years, they can’t solve THEIR AIDS problems, and they cannot even provide safe drinking water to their populations (I should know, as I just donated $10 to World Vision’s Ghana Drinking Water project only yesterday). I do believe Mr. Sharpton needs to get off the crack!

          • Moto

Go to Paula’s web site, buy a cookbook, make a statement.

        • jentap

There is no difference….when people age they change and gain knowledge. Just because she used that word at one point in her life doesn’t mean that she now feels that word is appropriate. If we condone everyone for things they said in their past we’d all be guilty.

      • Susan Tynan

Yes Ben so much for a freedom of speech..

      • Kevin Gartrell

Ben; While do believe this Country has
let PC go too far. Reading the Civil Court Disposition/Findings seems what was
going on at Paula Deen’s restaurants was a pattern of abuse, racial
        and sexual discrimination. The court
found the Deens liable on nine counts.

And so be it, my original statement was based on what I knew so far.

          • Bathing Suit Area

          • grais

That was the ‘issue’ described in her deposition. Have a black man hold a gun to your head in the south 30-40 years ago, and tell me you would have told your husband about the “robber” who did it.

so now one race can use a word without reproach but another race cannot? then blacks should not be able to use the words whitey or other words to that offend whites without losing their jobs.

          • ObamaFail

Any black person who says, “death to whitey” or “cracker” should be fired from their job. If they aren’t fired for it, then no white person should lose their job over it either.

Yes, that’s right. It’s okay for them to call white people names because they aren’t racists. Only white people are.

        • zbacku

LOL. What nonsense. Just like when they use the words ‘honky’ and ‘cracker’. Must be talking about a ‘goose’ and a saltine.

Lots of people are outraged at what rappers say. And lots of other people — those that buy their music — are not.

    • grais

I read her deposition also. She specifically said that the idea of the ‘southern wedding’ (about which the attorney, not Paula, introduced the word “slave”) would be misinterpreted. That’s hardly being “tone deaf.”
Her admission of using the N word was her recollection of the time when she worked in a bank and a black man held a gun to her head. She said it was likely she used the word when describing the incident to her husband.
And we’re supposed to be a forgiving people. ?
And for something like this, she loses her career. ?
Let he who is w/o sin, and all that.

Wow, sounds like something obama would say. People do not like to work for living anymore, they want what others have worked hard all there life. Entitlement is ruining this country. The people crying about all this are over the top dramatic crying about her using the n word. Yet African American rappers rap the word in every single song and use entirely way to many racial slurs against about every other race on this planet……where’s is the up roar there? So agree with you!

So I wonder, are we supposed to examine statements or comments made 20-30 or more years ago to pass judgement on every political or celebrity figure? And if we did, how many would pass that test?

      • Teej42

In that case, Obama should be fired for his admitted illegal drug use. This is not the sort of man that should lead a country and sway so many young people to thinking that drugs are cool. So, maybe there is a silver lining to this craze of going back 20-30 years ago and making a issue out of something done way back then.

That’s why white liberals “combat” racism. They are hiding their own racism, or realized that it was their ancestors that actually owned slaves. I say all white liberals are probably descendants of slave owners. My family history was looked into by my brother for college, and he found my family lived in the north and never owned any slaves. My ancestors fought for the Union in the Civil War. How many libs can say that? I bet they all come from slavers, and they pretend to not be like their ancestors.

        • Grant

Well, and they stayed quiet at first because they like her southern cooking and they agree secretly with her statement about there being a difference between blacks and n-words. I’ve heard African-Americans talk about it. Chris Rock has a whole comedy routine based on that. Heck, even an episode of The Boondocks talks about it, but the minute a white person acknowledges it, they’re villified by the “white guilt” pushers (most of whom are white) on the left. Most blacks either don’t care or agree, and will tell you that Revs. Jackson and Sharpton are full of it.

It is anyone’s right to be a racist, as long as they do not hurt anyone physically.

How society treats you as a result is on you. But the truth is, as long as you are not violent it shouldn’t really matter.

But the companies she represents also have the right to disown her.

Personally I think its incredibly hypocritical of our society, considering most are racist behind closed doors. Yes most, and the rest hide it for pseudo politically correct reasons.

I am sure even a saint such as you, have your moments of weakness. You either have freedom, or you don’t.

    • Charlene Lee

So according to you, apologies mean nothing. No one is saying racism “is okay” because it is not. Some people say the bad word and get away with it. Another says it in private and apologizes publicly for it, and still gets ostracized. You don’t have a problem with this.

    • Frank N Short

Comparing what Paula Deen said in 1980 something, to fictional period piece about slavery is a reach at best. They said “the n-word” in La Amistad, Lincoln, Roots and just about every period piece set before the 1900 that I ever seen too. Whether its a straight historical piece or a fictional piece set during the time, they use that word because it was used then. Do you expect directors to just not use it because it offensive and pretend like it was never said? Of course not that would be silly. Sure Taratino’s use of the word might have been excessive, but everything about the movie was excessive to the point of almost absurdity and that was the entire point.

Further more Paula Deen’s use of the word “nigger” in private is very disturbing and why she lost her job. She certainly wasn’t using it to positively describe her friend, or just using it simply describe a black person. No, she was using it anger because she had just been robbed. If you a jewish person was to do something against you, are you going to describe him as a “kike”? Would you call a person of Japanese decent a “Jap”? If a black person was to rob you would you describe them as a nigger?

Yes, rappers use the word and it’s use is somewhat prevalent among the black community, but that doesn’t make Paula Deen’s comment any less racist. (I said her comment, I have no idea whether she is or not and quite frankly I don’t care). Certain groups decide to take words that were formerly used as slurs against them and use them themselves in a more positive manner. I don’t know the sociologic reasons why it happens, or why we in the black community call ourselves “niggas”, but it does. Guido was a term that was used as a slur against Italian americans, and if you recall many Italian American groups protested its use on the Jersey Shore. Many females now refer to their female friends as their “bitches”. When I lived in New York many of my Jewish friends used to refer to each other as “kikes”. Many gays refer to themselves as faggots. Even the term redneck and cracker, once used to insult white people are used by white people for each other in a positive light. I dont know why it happens, but it does. I say all that to point out that there are a lot of examples like the n-word where a person in the group can say it, but it would be offensive if someone else said it.

I will accept the point insulting a white person will probably not get you fired, I also don’t understand the sociology behind that. That is hypocritical. There will be outrage for a short period, but nothing is likely to happen. The answer in my opinion is not to fight and try and save Paula Deen’s job but to call for others to be fired and point out the hypocrisy when they aren’t.

    • Maxwell

I like what you said, and agree with most of what you said. But I don’t know a single white person who uses the term redneck as a compliment.

I don’t understand why people of the same ethnicity throw racial slurs at each other. If the word really carries so much grief, why would you want to hear anyway say in the first place.

I also think it’s funny that Fat Joe got away with using the n-word when he was Puerto Rican.

      • bornfreeamerican

I’m a REDNECK and proud of it!! I love “rednecks” like Duck Dynasty! Rednecks are real people! They are fun, happy, and like to have a good time. So I don’t mind being called a redneck at all, in fact it makes me happy happy happy!!

    • virginia

I agree with much of what you say but I disagree with your solution. How about instead of getting hysterical and firing people, we forgive them? It’s easy for younger generations to condemn her for her views, having the benefit of being raised with modern attitudes about race. It’s not as easy for someone raised in a different era and culture to overcome attitudes that have been ingrained since childhood. This goes for all races. And yes, I think many people would respond the way she did after being robbed (insert applicable slur). When people are angry or feel threatened they often lash out with the most hurtful thing they can think of as a self defense tool, even if they wouldn’t normally say or do such a thing. Finally, I’ve never heard the word “redneck” used in a positive light. That is always derogatory, even among white people.

      • msellvee

I agree with you. I don’t know the origin of why the “dreaded n” word is derogatory. My parents used it when I was a kid and they weren’t saying it in a derogatory manner. It is what black people were called way back in the day. Not because they weren’t any good or for any other reason except that is how a black person was described.

    • virginia

I don’t know why you got voted down by so many. You actually make total, rational sense.

What bothers me is that we all know we use these words. Everyone talks trash. So why is this woman being hung on the cross? Get mad? Yes. Don’t watch her show. Yes if that’s what you want. But to get her fired and ruin her career over something she said 30 years ago. That is just stupid when we all know we are guilty of the same damn thing. I don’t know anyone of any color or any ethnicity that hasn’t used disparaging words against others. Everyone needs to grow up.

      • Bathing Suit Area

“Don’t watch her show. Yes if that’s what you want. ”

I would bet that you have used some derogatory slur in reference to ethnic people and it wouldn’t have been 10 years or 20 years ago, but more like 10 weeks ago. So, tell us, why are you such a racist?

        • Barbara Wilson Zils

And she is still loved by millions because we ALL know that the Boomers and older all were trained to be prejudicial towards nonwhites. We Boomers finally said “no”, but even the most liberal of us have used the “N” word at some point in our lives. Get over it!!!! We stopped using the word and so did Paula Deen.

    • robcrawford2

” it’s use is somewhat prevalent among the black community”

By “somewhat prevalent” you must mean “every fifth word”.

    • William Robert Guerra

so people can’t change? who cares what she said 20 some years ago? the word didn’t even mean the same thing 20 years ago….
just another excuse for black people to claim they need an upper hand out from everyone else….
you NEVER hear white people calling each other “honky”….idiot…

      • Harry A

“who cares what she said”, obviously quite a few people care. you can say what you want about the people who are outraged, but they very much do exist.

the word meant the exact same things thirty years ago, forty years ago and fifty years ago. if you look at the context its even more obvious how Paula Deen used it that it’s not being used postively.

what blacks are calling for more handouts because of Paula Deen? In fact most of the outrage from here is coming from white people, as many of the posters here point out. The person suing Paula Deen who first accused her of racist practices in her business is also white. So what blacks are here looking for a handout?

You’re comment that white people don’t call each other “honky” is irrelevant. You found one racial slur that white people dont use, and? Black people dont call each other Sambos or refer to their kids as tarbabies either. White people do call each others redneck and cracker in a friendly way, so my point still stands. Many people are also proud to call themselves hillbillies.

You called me an idiot why?

    • Teej42

If you are actually black, then you have to be honest when you think about what is said about white people in the black homes almost every single day. They don’t always say it around others, but in their homes it is open season on some white woman down the road who is dating a black man, or the white boss that is making life difficult. The double standards are what is truly outrageous in this country. The minute we made any speech, other than incitement to riot or to do bodily harm, a punishable offense, we lost all control over what we actually know about the people around us. We also lost our basic rights to freedom of speech. No one has the right to move around in this life and not be offended. Our right is to not personally accommodate those that are offensive. That is why I don’t go see very many movies these days. It does offend me to see certain things and hear certain words. Also, if I am being called names by my supervisor at work, it has nothing to do with the actual name that he/she called me but everything to do with the harassment involved. We need to get over the words and deal with the intent. Unfortunately, we may be way past that ability now. There are too many PC police and people willing to jump on the paddy wagon and beat on the bars all the way to the court house.

  • OldmanRick

The hypocrisy is incredible. The only reason that Paula is being thrown to the dogs is that networks and name brands are afraid the race baiters and shake down artists, Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton, will come out from under their rocks to cause trouble.

    • Harry A

Al Sharpton actually came to Paula Deen’s defence and said not to judge her off of what she did in the past. He said we have all done and said things that we would be embarrassed about in the past. And that it should be focused on the outcome of the trial about her current activities.

He has also led many marches along with NAACP to “bury the n-word” which were specifically aimed at the hip-hop community and its use in rap songs. His stance on this issue is not hypocritical at all.

I didn’t hear what Al Sharpton said but he was the first in line to demand the head of Imus when he had his “problems” a few years back. He demanded that Imus be fired and he got what he wanted. Of course everyone pointed out that Sharpton was in no position to lecture anyone about past mistakes as he not only said racist and vile things but actually encouraged a riot against the “white interlopers” where a store was burned to the ground and people died. I have no idea what caused this sudden turnaround in his thinking but I place zero value into anything that Al Sharpton says.
In addition, I would suggest that his effort along with the NAACP in changing perceptions in the hip-hop community has failed miserably. They have not buried the “n” word!

HEY YA’LL you can’t claim she’s a victim of race hustlers. The man constantly called the main race hustler Rev Al Sharpton has come to her defense. Heh! You can’t say Toure ,Julian Bond Melissa Harris Perry or other miltant PC blacks pulled the race card, because a white woman ,can we say it again, yes we can a white woman filed the racial discrimination claim.Zing! Once again Paula was and is being done in by ONE OF HER OWN. Goodbye Ya’ll.

        • msellvee

Ever seen white people who think they are black? They hang with only black people, date only black people and talk and act like they are black. And how do you know that this woman wasn’t out to get Paula because of a personal squabble, jealousy or something else?

I mean, I get the hypocrisy angle, but you can’t in all honesty compare the statements of a person to the writing in a piece of art. It’s all a part of creating the atmosphere in the work. Think about it, the movie wouldn’t have been anywhere near as good if it hadn’t used the N word so many times. The people depicted in the movie were racists, or that’s just how they talked in the time; the word isn’t used in a way to just shock people, it’s an important aspect of the speech. Paula Deen, on the other hand, is clearly just someone who didn’t think about what she was saying.

As a writer, I agree wholeheartedly with you. If you’re something that took place in that time period, the language needs to reflect it. Even when writing something thay takes place today, you may want to throw around a racial slur or two if you want to portray someone as being racist.

That said however. Quentin Tarantino didn’t do this. At least I don’t think so, because I don’t think blacks called each other the n word back then.

People who say Tarantino gets a pass because Django was fiction and a period piece must not have watched his other movies. Tarantino has an obsession with the n-word. His gratuitous use of it in all of his movies makes me wonder how much he uses it in other settings, especially if he were angry. Tarantino gives many black suck-ups jobs so he would be protected, like any good paternalistic white liberal would.

This is payback, pure and simple. I knew when Paula embarrassed Michelle Obama on her TV show in 2011 (by pointing out that Michelle ate tons of butter and “unhealthy” foods during the commercials) that she (Paula) was done for. It took two years, but they got her.

yeah, a white race baiter, we know….as paula is an obozo supporter, she should have gotten a pass but may not have because of moochelle’s dislike – it’s a possibility as the liar in chief and mrs vacation on the taxpayers dime have made it clear they like to try and destroy those who don’t fall in line…

I listened to an African-American radio station yesterday as the hosts of the morning program discussed this very comparison – PD to QT. Their final analysis was that it is ok for blacks to say “N#####” but not whites because when whites say it “they really mean it.” That is the difference…. My thought – even if this were true, the prevalence of this word from the black community keeps it in common usage. Leading by example is a lost art in America. Much easier to blame others and give ourselves a pass. God will hold all of us accountable – equally.

that is a ridciulous comparison……………..Django Unchained is MOVIE BASED ON ACTUAL EVENTS OF THAT TIME, WHERE THAT LANGUAGE WAS USED QUITE OFTEN………Kevin Sorbo is a fool …….

    • journogal

And Paula Deen’s incident happened over 20 years ago that she recounted in a deposition. But, of course, it’s okay for movies, rappers and anyone you approve of. Do you not understand, she didn’t say this on television or in front of a group while she was speaking. We get it, you are just piling on because you think it’s cool and cute.

      • john gill

no the lawsuit,in which all this came out, shows that at the workplace , this type of behavior was still going on….FYI, a white women filed the lawsuit…

        • journogal

So? Still, explain how she is racist, with credible examples.

        • Suegirly

Um…the LAWSUIT DOESNT show that this was going on. WINNING the lawsuit would. ..and the lawsuit isn’t decided yet. Innocent until proven guilty MUCH?

        • springer

how do you know it was a ‘white’ woman?

          • TocksNedlog

“The civil suit was filed in March 2012 in Chatham County Superior Court and was transferred to federal court a few months later. Deen and Hiers have both denied the allegations made by Jackson, who is white.”
            — That’s from the Associated Press. I’m guessing that they found out by researching the case that they were talking about.

          • springer

Why did she wait so long to file since it apparently happened in the 1980’s?

          • TocksNedlog

THIS is what happens when you rely on the Internet to give you the facts without you doing your own research. These incidents allegedly took place between 2005 & 2010.

            what if Jackson is half-white?

            really?
So, you’ve been on ancestry.com and checked out this person’s entire family tree?

          • TocksNedlog

No, but what I have done — and based on many of the comments on this thread I seem to be one of only a handful of people here that have actually done so — is READ the civil complaint that was filed against Deen and her brother. In it, the plaintiff’s lawyer describes the plaintiff as, and I quote, “a Caucasian, white female”.

Perhaps, if more people would actually read the civil complaint then some of the misconceptions about this case would fade to the background.

          • john gill

Well Springer, I know it was a white women, because I read!! lol see they keep that type of info trapped in newpapers…..lol When you get your news from Twitchy, You don’t get the full story…

the white woman filed the suit. what fucking difference does that make (hattip to Hillary)?

        • grais

The lawsuit ‘alleges’ that it ever went on.
Let me guess; you’re not a lawyer.

    • BinRaleigh

John what exactly is your point? “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” is a classic book set in that time that has had the word removed from it over twenty years ago. The black community regularly uses it to describe themselves. But let a white person use it, and we have to call it the “N” word. This is BS to the extreme.

      • john gill

I Don’t care if Paula dean says it, I don’t care if Leonardio Decaprio says it either.or 50 cent..BUT…now read carefully, because yall seem to be missing the point…When you work for a private employer, you have to follow by their rules.Get it yet??…Society has made the word politically incorrect, just like Retard/Btch etc etc……. When you work for a company, they have the right to fire you , if they see that ur unfit to market their product…..

        • BinRaleigh

And Paula Dean was the employer, not an employee of Food Network, at that time. So should she be punished by her current employer for an act that occurred BEFORE she was employed by them?

          • john gill

this is like talking to children….lol..WHY would food netowrk rehire her or offer her a new contract ,when she has this black cloud over her (lworkplace lawsuit, due to racial and derogatory behavior)..that would be a unwise investment on their part…..if I said a racial joke at my job, I would get fired immediately…..most jobs would fire employees of that nature…What don’t you get?

          • BinRaleigh

You digress from you initial point that Kevin Sorbo was a fool. Kevin Sorbo was saying that the double standard in this country is the problem. Tarantino can use the word his movie, black people can use it in every day conversation, but Paula Dean cannot. I pointed out that this “N” word was purged from Mark Twain’s works by the PC crowd. Your point is that a employer can fire (not renew her contract) her for saying it. I simply pointed out they were not her employer at the time. However your employer would not (not that they could not) fire a black person for saying it simply because they would fear a discrimination lawsuit. Sorbo is right there is a double standard and it is screwing this country up.

          • john gill

He is still, a fool,..he complained about hypocriscacy..hypocricay from who? his argument held no substance

Since it was a Tweet, try limiting yourself to 160 characters.
His argument holds huge substance. Your lack of being able to comprehend the substance and the scope is your issue not his.

Yea, your right BinRaleigh……I don’t comprehend the language of hate and stupidity…..it seems thats what Sorbo speaks..

so you believe you should immediateky be fired from your current job for a statement you made over 20 years ago? and her supporters are filling her restaurants – where’s all this negativity you claim the food network is experiencing?

I Don’t care if Paula dean says it, I don’t care if Leonardio Decaprio says it either.or 50 cent..BUT…now read carefully, because yall seem to be missing the point…When you work for a private employer, you have to follow by their rules.Get it yet??…Society has made the word politically incorrect, just like Retard/Btch etc etc……. because it was 20 years ago, not yesterday….shouldn’t the statute of limitations in saying something stupid run out? based on your theory, YOU should be fired from your current job for calling someone a honky when you were 14…

Stop making excuses for everyone else. So in your little world, it’s okay for her to be vilified like this? You call her a racist, yet I bet you don’t know that she campaigned for Obama in 2008, what a racist, right?

      • john gill

I could care less….I didn’t know who she was until this weekend…She works for a private company, that does not want to be represented by her…And?? Any job/company would fire their employee over her behavior, So what she campaigned for Obama, her actions over the past yrs(including the lawsuit over work related issues) shows that she just doesn’t get it…..but go ahead defend that dingbat woman lol

        • journogal

If you could care less, why are posting here? Kind of silly, don’t you think? Prove that she is a racist, prove it. She said this over 20 years ago, and now Food Network is not renewing her contract? Let’s go into your past and see what nuggets that you have, and see if you agree your company can fire you for it.
Also, how is she a dingbat? Explain. Is it because you don’t like her?

          • john gill

you do realise their is a lawsuit pending right now about her workplace?….So it still goes on to this day,…Why would food netowrk renew her contract if she is being sued for inappropriate behavior at the workplace.? That’s just a bad investment….she is a dingbat, because she wanted to do a wedding with all blacks as her servants, So she still does not get it, and apparentley, neither do you….I would expect no less from her, a southener..

If sincere apologies to liberals are no longer going to be accepted,
they why bother apologizing when they demand it? Not only do they not
forgive (which is the point of apologies), they double down on their

should demand apologies from the liberals for what they’re doing to our

F*CK YOU, TWO FACED AMERICANS!!

I don’t use that term. My friends don’t use it. We all understand its a pejorative term. Even in private conversation there are better ways to refer to someone’s behavior without indicting their race…but as a white person it feels like you can’t criticize anything a non-white does without at some point being slammed as a racist…something nobody wants to be. Some people wear their race as an invincible shield…a cover for outrageous behavior no matter how stupid, lame, or dangerous. Try criticizing President Obama’s ideology. It cannot be done before his devotees label you a racist. Its like a magic amulet invoked to shut down criticism without have to defend actual arguments.

Paula Deen’s fall demonstrates its power…even if the word was spoken 20 years ago in private. Now that we live in a country more like an East German police state than a free republic…we had all better watch what we say in private because somebody is probably listening and recording so that should any one of us become a public figure that says or does something not approved of by the powers that be…they’ll have the goods on us to destroy us should it ever become necessary…especially if you’re white since being white is so out and it is presumed as a default position that you’re guilty of something racist.

Our country has been taken over by speech codes and political correctness. They are both forms of mind control. Words used to have meanings before the “your truth and my truth” concept took hold. The word in question here describes a certain class of a group, not all black people…just as the term white trash does not describe all white people. Why is one acceptable and the other not? Your description of where this had led our country is correct.

It is horrible the way the PC speech police keep calling for Bill Maher to be fired over a joke.

well said…i would be stunned to hear anyone i socialize with use the term..it is NOT used and i would question the integrity if it was, ..i understand some have grown up around it and it may be hard to quit a habit,..but it would be an indication of a weakness of character,..as is the use of any derisive term,..and yes, i know what my screen name is

    • krusaderrabbit

I think eventually alot of white people (whatever that is) will get tired of walking on eggs about this issue and will respond with a backlash, going to far the other way. Which, of course, will only prove the point to the politically correct mob.

      • Bathing Suit Area

Nah, most white people really aren’t that racist. I can see how you’d get the impression they are though, if you’re used to hanging around with conservatives.

Any person over the age of 20 who claims to never having used the “n” word is a liar. All ya gotta do is “speak” along with a rap song. It’s usually the left who gets all up over this kind of stuff. The left, home of the KKK. Thank you Robert Bird. May your spirit live on.

My family FINALLY stopped saying it in front of me.

Hypocrisy. Why can Chris Rock get away with saying “Cracker” in reference to a white person in his concert, but if you are a White comedian you can’t say “Nigger”

What is particularly eerie about this is that there is no giant swell from Blacks demanding she be fired. This is all being instigated by the media. Quite scary.

I sort of wish that the people who are so aghast at Deen using the n word 30+ years ago would indicate their age and where they grew up. I find it almost unbelievable the people who seem to be saying that no one other than the KKK types used that word back in the 60s. I’m not saying it wasn’t a slur but are people forgetting how we have changed in what we consider appropriate?

Is she says those words in private, she doesn’t owe anyone an apology. It’s called free speech and it’s in the privacy of her own home – so it’s nobody’s business. Obama called whites “mother f*****rs” in his book and he’s not apologizing. Jessie Jackson spit in white peoples’ food when he worked at a restaurant and called Jews “hymies” – and he’s still around. Black rappers call white women “b*****s” and refer to whites as “red n***s” and “h**kies” and they’re not apologizing. After this incident, a lot more white people are going to be in the privacy of their homes calling blacks “n*****s” and who could blame them?

Until the late 60’s, in the UK, children would read a story book called “Ten Little N – – – – – -“; the expression “N – – – – – in a woodpile” was frequently used and no-one ever thought of the “N” word as derogatory. Does this mean that we, too, should be treated like Paula Dean?

  • Mike Meyer

Having read the court documents filed by the plaintiff, the problem here is NOT Paul Deen. The problem here is a man named Earl W. “Bubba” Hiers. 95% of Paula Deen’s current problems stem from this man’s behavior at Bubba’s restaurant where the plaintiff Lisa T. Jackson worked. Yes, Deen did say the “N” word but that really, really pales in comparison to the abuse the Plaintiff and others have suffered at the hands of Bubba Hiers. If Paula Deen is a smart business woman, she will sever all ties and relations with Mr. Hiers. Do that, and maybe she can rescue what’s left of her professional career. If she doesn’t, after she loses this court case, because of Bubba’s actions, she will fade into obscurity.

    • AJ

A little hard to severe ties with Bubba, as he is her brother.

      • Mike Meyer

You can fire family. Especially when a family member had run your restaurant into the ground and is violating the law left and right. If it weren’t for Lisa Jackson, Bubba’s would have gone under. She saved that restaurant and did Deen a huge favor by doing so and by continuing to work for her. What I want to know is why Bubba is not the one being held accountable. He’s 95% of the problem.

  • Pasadena_Phil

I don’t know Paula Deen personally and had never even heard of her before she was selected as the Parade Marshal for the Tournament of Roses Parade a couple of years ago. But as a member of the Tournament assigned to the Kickoff Luncheon where she was the featured speaker, I got to see her in action first as a private person and then as the larger than life “Paula Deen” in front of an adoring crowd. They are the same person. She is not the only person I could say that about but speaking as someone who has met many celebrities and famous people, it is fairly uncommon. You can’t fake it. Paula Deen is no phony.

At the luncheon, we set up a green room to accommodate the parade marshal and their circle of personal guests to help them relax and enjoy their experience. It was obvious to everyone there that Paula Deen NEEDS her family to be who she is. I didn’t get to actually meet her but being near someone for a few hours and seeing them with their hair down, you get an idea of what they are about and I feel confident in saying that the Paula Deen we see on TV is the same Paula Deen her family knows and loves. She came across as someone who appreciates her success and hasn’t forgotten where she comes from.

Paula Deen is a true American success story, a poor single mother who pulled herself up by her own boot straps. It is a shame that her career should meet such an undeserved and inglorious end, a career that involved little more than entertaining people with a popular cooking show. She just doesn’t deserve this. I feel really bad for her and I’ve never even watched her TV show. Can’t we pick on someone else? There are LOTS of people who deserve to be taken down. Why her?

    Was it because of this?

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2047901/Paula-Deen-Michelle-Obama-ate-guest-Ive-show.html

    • AJ

Deen is from my town – her ex ran one of the largest car dealerships in town. She comes back here every year for a fundraiser for women who are drug and alcohol addicts who are trying to get clean. Most of the women in this group are black. She has a meeting with those who buy the tickets to the program, but she spends time with the women in the program, getting to know them, sharing her story of finding freedom from fear. She finds out what brought thm to the point of addiction, it seems that she does care for these women and what they have been through.

If she was truly a racist, she would just raise the money, get the publicity, and leave. She wouldn’t care to sit down and hear a black woman’s story of why she took the path of drugs or alcohol.

      • Pasadena_Phil

IMO, she is being taken down because it is so easy to take someone like her down. She is just a simple person from humble roots who magically stumbled into fame and embraced it but didn’t lose herself to the glamor of it all. Fame is so fleeting for people like her. Even when you do nothing but good, someone can take something you said long ago and twist it out of context from the time it was said into being offensive to modern sensibilities.

Everything is so political today. Just read some of the comments here condemning her just because she is a Democrat and backed Obama. For too many Americans, There is no room for people anymore. It wasn’t always that way.

  • brownsfan32

The madness here is the outrage over what this woman said at one point in her life and yet, not hardly a word is spoken about the man who fathered 22 children with 14 different women. Who’s behavior is more destructive to the African-American culture, or any culture for that matter, this serial impregnator or Paula Dean? The nearly 80% illegitimacy rate for black births is far more destructive to that group than any word a person can utter. What Paula Dean said was wrong , she apologized and we should move on from here. What this man and others like him are doing is catastrophic to the success of our culture and society. This is like being devastated by a broken arm, but shrugging off stage 4 cancer.

    • HWarrior13

Then why are you commenting on an article about her ?

      • brownsfan32

I don’t think I understand your comment. I really don’t think many people here will have a hard time understanding that my comments were not about Paula Dean as much as they were to the reaction of the way the story is covered . The outrage about the actions of the man I earlier mentioned should be louder , stronger and deeper than what we are hearing about Paula Dean’s remarks. . This reprobate’s behavior should be judged much more harshly than Paula Dean’s , as it is the root of much cultural and societal derogation. Yet we hear about the PD incident ad nauseam, as she is portrayed as the anti-christ, while late-night talk show hosts make jokes about the truly evil person. I think as a society , we need to get our priorities straight .

        • HWarrior13

I don’t think you understand my reply….If you don’t want people to pay attention to the Paula Deen story…don’t draw MORE attention to it by commenting on it.

Go comment on the story you want to draw attention to…The more comments an article receives the more “buzz” it gets.

          • brownsfan32

That horse is running down through the pasture already and shutting the barn door now is not going to help.I didn’t say they shouldn’t pay attention, but people need to put this into perspective and try to stay away from the knee-jerk reactions that are so common these days . Men like Orlando Shaw do far more damage to the community , than 1000 Paula Deans. What Paula Dean says has very little impact on anybody, but Orlando and many more like him have a devastating effect on many people. There needs to be a conversation about these things that is carried on with intelligence and logic; One hopefully with a higher level of reasoning than was had by Pavlov’s dogs.

          • HWarrior13

” One hopefully with a higher level of reasoning than was had by Pavlov’s dogs.”…..
NOW, I see that problem here.
You have FAR too much respect for the average American’s intelligence.

Was that not exemplified by the results of the last presidential election ?

This is going to remind “hush-hush” amongst the high profile liberals

  • 1911HeadBanger

It’s not the Blacks that are whinning about what Paula Dean said back when. It’s the stupid ass Liberal White People who always have to pretend that they are so shocked, and feel they have to PROVE to everyone that they aren’t racists. They hate Paula Dean anyway, because she’s from the South and is proud of that fact. She’s done more to help blacks into the spotlight on Food Network, and had many as guests on her show. They all talked about a positive experience with her and were greatful. This is all about Money and a ruthless, underhanded bitch of a former employee, who sold out to a dickhead attorney to make money. PERIOD. She had just written a letter of appreciation to Paula and her son for the advantages and positive work environment she experienced while working there when she resigned. Then suddenly a year later, she files theis lawsuit for 1.6 million. Guess she needed money after quitting work. The attorney should be self explainatory.

  • Karen Waltermire

But it’s ok to have a Senator that was a member of the KKK? Senator Byrd is only out of office because he died 4 years ago…after being there for decades. The media even made “excuses” for it..if mentioned at all….why? Because he was a democrat? Recently the new black panthers made racial slurs and the main media never even reported it even though a civil rights lawyer said it was the worse voting poll civil rights violation he has seen since the 50’s. I find it appalling and more offensive to have a law maker or people that actually advocate and promote racism. But the media and public are more offended by words than actions? Doesn’t make sense to me.

I’ll bet even Jesse “Hymietown” Jackson condemns her. Somewhere George Orwell is shaking his head…

        Think again:

        • HWarrior13

So ? Jackson will make a buck wherever he can…what has that got to do with Deen being yet another Liberal Democrat racist ?

          • TocksNedlog

I was pointing out that you were wrong and he IS going after her. She’s a Democrat, and she has definitely espoused some policy positions that are liberal, but this situation is toxic — she’s going under the bus.

  • AZWarrior

I agree with Sorbo. Show me a person who NEVER used a racial epithet. I’ll guarentee you that everyone has. This knee-jerk boolschitt is getting really tired really fast. (And I don’t even LIKE this woman.) We’ve become a country of thin-skinned, always the victim pussies.

  • Steve Barnett

What offends me most about the “N word” is that blacks specifically and liberals in general are offended when when a white or conservative person uses it, but are appothetic about it when one of their own use it.

  • BinRaleigh

The rather sad thing is that the younger generation of white kids, mine included, do not think of this as a bad word. They get to hear it everyday from black performers to describe other blacks. So exactly how can I tell them to not use this word as my parents taught me to not use it in the late 60s?

    • TocksNedlog

Why don’t you just tell them the truth?
Blacks can say it, whites — other than a character portrayal within a fictional context — cannot; and if that means there’s a double-standard, then guess what? Double-standards exist in this world … deal with it.

      • BinRaleigh

Done that, which leads to the reply “That’s stupid Dad”
My daughter would not learn it until some poorly trained black kid tried to beat her up for saying it. I had to pay his hospital bills. Never piss off my daughter the now 21 year old third degree black belt.

      • msellvee

Because a young child is not going to understand that. Hell, we hardly get it ourselves. If you tell a child “you can’t say it cause you’re white but the black kids can say it” isn’t that promoting racism and teaching racism to a whole new generation?

        • TocksNedlog

Telling a white child “you can’t say the N-word,” ‘promotes’ racism?

It’s up to the parents of the black kid to tell their kid “Don’t say that word.”

          Tell your kid the TRUTH.
Tell them “THIS is the way things are!”

    • HWarrior13

Why would YOU allow your child to say it? Did you allow them to use the “C” word ?

If my child said it, that would be “the end” of my child.

      • BinRaleigh

Can I assume you never said anything your parents told you not to say? Did/do you blindly follow every right/wrong your parents told you? You are implying that you would disown and shun your own child for not obeying you? No child is as obedient as you imply ours should be.
I do not babysit my children while they are attending class in high school, or college. While we have taught them right and wrong they will add their experiences and make adjustments. They will make mistakes, and if there is a price they will have to pay it. But once the price is paid I will not hold it against them forever. When they do something dumb, I do not disown them. I help them understand why it was wrong.

        • HWarrior13

I wrote that I wouldn’t allow my child to say it. I can’t help what they will say when I’m NOT around to disallow it.
I doubt my child would say when not around me, unlike your child, my child WAS raised correctly not to use that word.
You failed in teaching your child respect, think we can both admit that.
I’m sure your child has other fine attributes.
BTW…. Did you allow your child to use the “C” word? That word is also used in rap, etc and “all the cool kids” say it….so is your child allowed to say THAT word ?
          I doubt it.
Be honest…you allowed your child to say the “N” word, probably with a wink and a nod and/or rolled your eyes, etc.

          • BinRaleigh

You are one seriously disturbed person. I suggest you get some professional help.

          • HWarrior13

I LOVE it when someone admits they lost the debate ! (calling names and “insulting” your opponent is the same thing as admitting you lost the debate)

            :-)

          • AJ

I’m in my mid-30′ and I don’t even have a clue what the c-word is.

Oh, and my mother heard Oprah say something about the c-word and mom asked me what it was. She is almost 70

          • BinRaleigh

In my mid 50s and I am guessing it is not Calligraphy

          • HWarrior13

I’m in my mid 30s also and I’ve heard the c-word…it’s bad.
You must live a very sheltered life is the only thing I can think of, when someone of our age hasn’t heard the c-word.
            Odd.

          • BinRaleigh

You posted at 2 in the morning?

I was not name calling or insulting, just stating my conclusion based upon your unfounded ranting. The suggestion to get professional help was sincere.

          • HWarrior13

Thank you for proving my point about losing a debate…again.

And again, infantile “insults” are always the refugee of a loser. A last gasp of holding on to one’s pride, perhaps?

And btw, there is an ENTIRE world outside of the world you live in, Bin….it’s wasn’t 2 AM, (that’s “in the morning”) where some people live in the in the rest of the world.

          • BinRaleigh

Ok, taking bets on how long I can keep this person slinging the same insult over and over.

          • msellvee

Hey Buddy, reaiity check time. Go back and read the posts. The only one slinging any insults is you.

          • msellvee

Well then I guess you just admitted that you “lost the debate” as you just insulted the man and his daughter. Haha.

          • msellvee

I agree with you. He can’t even stay on the topic. He assumes that your child was not raised right??

You people do know that Paula Deen is a LIBERAL DEMOCRAT, major OBAMA SUPPORTER and campaigned for him, right ?
    Most liberals are racists.

    • BinRaleigh

I hereby present you with todays “Keen Sense of the Obvious” award.

      • HWarrior13

I see very few people mentioning the fact that she’s a liberal.

        Snark away…

    • happyscrapper

Maybe after this, she will wake up and realize how hypocritical, PC, nucking futz the left is and turn toward the light. One can hope. After all, she is being kicked in the teeth by the very people she has always supported, and defended by conservatives. That should tell her something!

    • HWarrior13

Not sure why your comment is “waiting moderation” @happyscrapper:disqus , but I concur with your statement.

  • Norma Johnson

This whole thing makes me so sad. Paula Dean messed up, she fessed up and apologised for the remarks that she made that were racist. Where is the forgiveness? There is not one person on this earth who has not done something wrong. Not a person alive is worthy of forgiveness but, they are forgiven because of what Jesus did one the cross. Leave this woman alone! Give her her jobs back! What is this world coming to?

  • ISPCA – Indiana- USA

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” ― Mahatma Gandhi. Paula Deen did not do anything wrong. I love the hypocrisy of Christians

      Other than you, I mean.

    • navyguns

Are you suffering a psychosis about Christians? Where in this story is anything about Christians?

    • bjeanthejellybean

Uh….. what most are saying is if it is wrong for Paula Deen why is it not wrong for black rappers …etc.

      Our Christ also taught forgiveness.

And btw …. you have NO idea what the religion of any of those that posted are.

What do you suppose those refined hockey players were calling each other last night? What about Geo Zimmerman in his call to 911? This is life in the 21st century. A year ago I was accosted by a person intent on robbing me and described him quite clearly but I wouln’t suggest he is representative of his race!
Actually, I would have fired Paula for wearing rings while mixing food with her hands!

    • TocksNedlog

George Zimmerman did NOT use any racial epithets in his call to 911.

      • Harry J. Smith

I know what I heard – not worth arguing over!

        • TocksNedlog

Especially since there isn’t any argument. At trial, the prosecution is NOT claiming that he used a racial slur — because he didn’t.

        • HWarrior13

          WHAT, did you “hear” ?

        • bjeanthejellybean

You only heard what you WANTED to hear.

    • bjeanthejellybean

I may agree with you but Geo Zimmerman’s 911 call? He was ASKED by the operator the race of the kid….. and when he made mention about they always get away with this stuff (I’m paraphrasing) that wasn’t racial, he was referring to people in general who commit crimes.

  • Sue Ewald

My question is – does anybody listen to the radio anymore or any conversation between groups of people ????? I can’t tell you how many times I have heard the “N” word or a slang of it – without the “ER” at the end of it both white and black, multi racial and REALLY ANY artist on the radio!!! Their music gets played constantly with no type of punishment. I agree with Mr Sorbo – THE HYPOCRISY of it!

  • Kathy Barger McCracken

    When
Lil Wayne and almost all rappers use that word, it is deemed ok. When
Spike Lee makes movies that has that word in all his movies its deemed
ok. When a white woman said that word 20 years ago and has apologized
for it, its NOT ok. Saying words like whitey, cracker, honkie by the
other race is just fine. Sounds like a double standard to me. Is it
right to use that words? NO. Should Food Network, Smithfield fire Paula?
NO. This world is far too politically correct catering to all the left
    wing nuts out there.

  • Joe Valdrighi

If I were Paula Deen, I would not apologize anymore . I live in the South. What she said goes all time, even the blacks use the same language . At least now Paula Deen knows who her friends are . At least Paula being is more honest than our president .

One race can tell another race what words they can or can not use, only makes one race a second class, ruled by the race that makes the rules. But I agree, she voted for Soetoro, just desserts…you vote for a tyrant, don’t complain when tyranny comes knocking.

My parents are Chinese and Irish. It never amazes me that 99.44/100% of the time, it is black people who cry racism. However, black people are never called on for their constant racism and bad remarks. I don’t want extra food stamps and I bought my own cell phone. I just want black people to stop all their racism and the white people in government to stop giving them all our money.

You know a lot of people upset at what Mrs Dean said in private a long time ago in my opinion are very hypocritical. I cannot believe that all the so called pc people on here have never ever made a derogatory statement about someone in your entire life. Non of you have made fun of a fat person (of which I am) or a handicapped person, laughed at a sexist joke be it about a woman or a man. I suppose when u have been angry you have never used a bad word about another person maybe calling them an SOB which is degrading that persons mother. We are never gonna live in a perfect world. PC has ruined this country. If the word is so offensive then is should not be used by anyone. Mrs Dean was in a no win situation and she chose to do the right thing by not lying about using the word. In my own opinion Martha stewart and Michael vick are worse examples of celebrities and yet they were able to go back to what they were doing before.

leftists, progs, liberals and whatever other alphabet group…. they share a similar trait. be they ignorant ghetoo-ites all the way to pseudo-intellectuals in hollywood or academe ….. they all demand tolerance as long as its their dog in the fight. the same enlighten ones that scream diversity and inclusion to make things work are the same buffoons that demand a “jury of their peers” when one of their protected class projects has to go to court on some murder rap… then diversity is shunned and they instead what 12 black folks that dont like law enforcement and dont have to be to work for the next 3 weeks.

    funny how that works….isnt it?

p.s. hats off to you mr sorbo. it takes courage to speak out in your profession….now kindly visit the hollywood center of diversity and tolerance and turn in your sag card. their board said they cant give you a mulligan on this one. their board had a 2 minute trial this morning while you were at the gym. they found you guilty of 2 counts of racism/hate crimes. they also found you guilty of sharing mean ideas in the 1st degree for using the internet. your file has been flagged with the red star label of hate monger and you wont be eligible for a star on the walk unless you renounce your hate speech and donate a half years salary to rainbow coalition

Her mistake was telling the truth in court, everyone knows you can’t do that..

An attorney CANNOT prompt their client to LIE under oath.

        • TocksNedlog

No, but they CAN coach their client to answer the questions put to her in a manner that doesn’t make her come off looking like an ignorant idiot.

          • HWarrior13

Think made herself look like an idiot…she appears to be a VERY head strong person.
We can’t always control our clients.

          • TocksNedlog

Given the incredibly poor handling of her apology video (hello, manager? publicist?) it does not appear that she allows people that have her best interests at heart to really help her. Either that or she has surrounded herself with people that are like her and don’t really know what the best thing is for her to do.

          • HWarrior13

Lawyers are advisers, counselors…not prison guards. So I don’t think she had horrible lawyers, (she probably has the best lawyers money can buy with all her money) but again…you can’t get a client to do something they don’t want to do.
            That agreed upon….olive branch?

          • TocksNedlog

I think I already pretty much conceded your point. Her performance, both during her deposition and in her apology video(s) is what sunk her. I still have to wonder, though, if she was receiving adequate counsel.

          • HWarrior13

Yes, I concur, especially with the video part.

What the hell was with the “Tammy Faye” make up? That certainty didn’t help.
That aside, she is a far left Liberal Democrat, so I was disappointed with her jumping on a celebrity “obama is a God” train a long time ago, so it didn’t surprise me to find out she was a racist.

I did things 30 years ago that I am not proud of…heck 10 years ago. But like most people we mature and learn. Mistakes are mistakes. Apologize, don’t do it again and move on. The racial divisiveness that exists now is heightened for one reason and I wish to heaven that would stop. However, in the meantime this can be deemed a two way street. I will not buy Smithfield products, nor will I watch and patronize QVC and I am just itching to find a reason to leave Walmart in the dust.

I’ve heard all the criticism and what she is accused of, but I still ask; where is the tolerance, where is the forgiveness? The sad part is that hundreds of employees and their families could end up suffering or losing jobs because of this incident.

    • TocksNedlog

      How so?

      • Mike Fobes

When her tv show ends, all the people associated with it are also out. Same with the people whose primary job has been the production of her “branded” items. Possibly not hundreds, but still a large number.

Paula Deen is an industry, she has restaurants and her shows have dozens of employees just for starters.

        • TocksNedlog

It remains to be seen how many of her show’s employees will be out of work, or out of work for any significant amount of time.
As for the employees of her restaurants, the biggest threat to their continued employment over the next six months will probably be the implementation of Obamacare.

  • Michael Gerardi

We grow up hearing and learning various words and phrases, which everyone uses, so it is only natural that we use them also. Later in life we often realize that some of these words and phrases are hurtful to others, distasteful, often wrong, even unlawful, so we quit using them. That doesn’t mean that we have to apologize for using them in the past, or that we should be punished for using them. We only expressed ourselves the way we were taught, and there was not hatred or ill will in any of it. It is not that we white folks were the only ones at fault, for every race speaks hatefully of the other races. Its just like slavery – The people who bought and “owned” slaves were depicted as mean and evil, but no one ever seemed to find anything wrong with the people who sold members of their own race into slavery.

  • Barbara Wilson Zils

She is still loved by millions because we ALL know that the Boomers and older all were trained to be prejudicial towards nonwhites. We Boomers finally said “no”, but even the most liberal of us have used the “N” word at some point in our lives. Get over it!!!! We stopped using the word and so did Paula Deen.

  • aegean1

Funny how we’re supposed to give illegals a second chance, allow them to become citizens even though they broke–and continue to break–the law, but somebody uses a racial slur in the past and they get this kind of condemnation. No second chances for PC infractions?

I think the liberal media has been discriminating toward Paula. For something she said 30 years ago. I just said it yesterday and today! She has the right to say anything she wants to.

    • missannthrope

30 years ago? The lawsuit is about events that happened between February 2005 and August 2010. Unless you are living in an alternate reality, we’re talking 3 years ago, not 30.

      • Bathing Suit Area

But there was mention of something that was 30 years ago, so let’s pretend that’s what it’s all about to discredit the complaints!

        • missannthrope

It is in reference to the lawsuit and the deposition she gave last week. If she’s trying to save her hide by trying to back it up and claim she used it once 30 years ago, when in her deposition she said, of course she uses the word, then she’s lying in one of those places. Read the legal documents on this. I will admit, she is far less despicable than her brother. Her biggest mistake is her company owning his restaurant. She should have nipped the complaints about him in the bud years ago, instead of a teary apology now. Especially when that’s not even the worst part of the lawsuit.

  • equitymaxx

Seriously, you people are twitchy stupid. I don’t condone the word at all but at least quintin is trying to tell a story. Yes the word was in use back then. However. Deen used it in private and the sentiment in private as well. How many people do you think didn’t get a job at her place because the sentiment was there. There is no comparison. Oh, just because everyone has racist tendencies it ok. Thats some Bullshit. She got caught with her hidden racism. Thats the way america rolls. Sure smile in my face but when it comes to hiring good people, if they are Black, you can discriminate as long as you don’t get caught. I’m glad, her show is gone and she is feeling the backlash of racist stupidity. I loved this woman and very discouracged that this is the truth about her. How many lives did she have a chance to make better and she choose not too. Don’t be stupid people. She is getting what she deserves.

    • Roger Baker

In your entire life you have never used a disparaging word about someone?

      • equitymaxx

Yes but the word is not all the problem. How many qualified people do u think didn’t get the job because she feels that way. How many broken hearts do u think she is responsible for because they thought they would get the job and didn’t because they were black. I loved her at one point but now that i know she is part of the problem. It’s just a reminder of the horrible world we live in

    • TocksNedlog

Kevin Sorbo was NOT calling for Django Unchained to be banned.

  • Steve

What I think is even more hypocritical is that Black people say racist stuff ALL THE TIME about white people and its suppose to be ok and then you have this one incident and because its a white person (OH MY GOD) you think you had killed someone. What a bunch of Shit. Especially when the black people call each other it all the time. Their excuse is that its because they are black that gives them the right. That’s just plain ignorant B.S.

    • Patsplacepp

“Black people say racist stuff ALL THE TIME about white people” Steve I’m a Black person..male, 37 years old. I don’t say racist stuff about white people at any time. Also I don’t call other Black people, family, friends, my kids, my parents the “n” at any time. I’m not perfect and I’m sure I have as many prejudice thoughts and feelings as the next person.

Finally your comment is completely ignorant. If you hang out or associate with Black people that say, “Their excuse is that its because they are black that gives them the right.” then those specific people are just sad, but don’t allow them to represent the whole. Just my two cents

  • missannthrope

Wasn’t Django Unchained a period piece? From when use of that word was common? That is the difference. Society has changed in 150 years, whether you like it or not. Paula Deen came of age in the 1960s, when she should have known better. That is the difference. The difference between historical accuracy dealing with slavery and being a flat out southern racist, who thinks dressing black men up as slaves for a wedding is cute. Also, if you read the complaint, among other things, you will see the restaurant has a separate entrance for black employees. So it isn’t just about her use of that word, in spite of that being what is getting all the press. There are a number of things she and her brother did to black employees that they saw nothing wrong with, that constitute severe civil rights violations. Here’s the complaint, if anyone of you want to think, before spouting.

Your bigotry is showing. “southern racist” paints an entire region in a nasty, stereotypical way. You apparently don’t know anything about the south, either in 1960 or now. I’m not here to defend Paula Deen, just to point out that it’s not okay to bash an entire region of the country while calling out others for their prejudices.

The hypocrisy is, many conservatives could still love and respect Paula when we knew she was an Obama supporter, we can separate politics from the person. Libs cannot, and must destroy anyone who does not support their Stepford reality.

What if I told you… “I’m offended” was not more powerful than “the 1st amendment right guarantees my right to say whatever I want, especially if it offends you”??

It was written for unpopular speech because popular speech doesn’t need defended. My rights end where yours begin. I can say what I want until I directly threaten you. Merely offending someone doesn’t warrant the erosion of the 1st amendment. Until then, how do I say it elegantly, f*ck off.

    • Bathing Suit Area

The 1st amendment right guarantees my right to say whatever I want, and to have my own show on the Food Network!

    • TocksNedlog

That’s a very nice speech you gave there.

Would you like to comment on the topic of THIS thread now?

  • Jonnie Montoya

So let me get this right. Paula Deen, some 30 to 40 years ago used “the N word” which everyone is tiptoeing around. So it’s ok for BLACK people to call each other “the N word”, and for those same black people to call whites, Hispanics, Jewish people and people of Arab descent racial names, and it’s ok for Hispanics to call other races by “slur words”, and it’s apparently ok for any person of color to use a racial name for others not of their race, but the minute a WHITE person uses any such word, it’s suddenly not ok? Did I get that right? And don’t tell me it doesn’t happen because I have heard it all over.
I think it would be hysterical if white people started suing and using the ACLU to get the PC people to start protesting every time the words “Honkey” “Whitey” which by the way our very own first lady has used (notice I purposely did not capitalize the first lady), “Redneck” “Ghost” and any other racial slur which is thrown at lighter skinned people. After all what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, or in this case what’s good for the spook is good for the ghost.

    • TocksNedlog

      Me, myself, I’m a creamsicle.

  • Patriot327

If Paula Deen is being taken to task for comments she made 40 years ago, never mind that she has had several black friends cook with her, on her show (what a racist thing to do), then any white, or black liberal, for that matter, who calls black conservatives “Uncle Tom” should expect to be fired!!! How is this any less racist? Oh, wait a minute, I forgot about the hypocritical double standard, forgive me.

    • TocksNedlog

MSNBC does not run the Food Network, or vice versa.

  • Bh1984

Ok Kids, let’s stop the judging of others. Haven’t you ever done something in you life that you had to ask forgiveness for; sure you have. So, put yourself in the other persons shoes and remember how it felt to even ask for forgiveness. And, by the way, none of you have been without sin in your life! Learn to forgive. Here is a thought: put your mind on something else and move on.

  • Guest

Americans are at liberty to boycott the boycotters,
give them a taste of their own medicine.
    Lack of outrage about the racist bilge pumped out of the Obama Channel, MSNBC;
but severe angst from the same politically correct hypocrites about Paula Deen.
    Nothing new here.

    • RayOne

      . . . let them eat cake,’butta’.

  • mapache

Every time I see this kind of reaction makes me want to use the word! One of the primary reasons that the word still exists is the selfsame Black community that is so offended…they use it so frequently and in their lyrics that it won’t go away.

  • lillian

we have all at one time or another , whether it be a joke or out of anger or just plain stupiid said things we wish we could take back. I know I have…..I hope I am forgiven first by God and then by the people I may have hurt. God bless you paula

  • san rafael blue

Enough with being publicly drawn and quartered Paula, it’s time to get MAD in front o’ that camera! You GO on that next interview and BANG your pots and pans down like you mean business, You POINT your buttered wooden spoon in the interviewer’s FACE and say I’m done apologizing, anything else would be phony. If yall haven’t heard me by now, then yall aint never gonna hear me. Let’s get back to living well and making money, Dammmit! ………………..Or to quote Mel Gibson WHO WANTS TO EAT? Who the F&$k Wants to EAT? Yaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

  • san rafael blue

What is find interesting and perhaps even concerning is one of the groups representing a group of plaintiffs against Paula is from the Rainbow Coalition, as seen on Fox TV. Just today, I heard that none other than the “Reverend” Jesse Jackson has graciously offered to help Paula find ‘redemption.,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hmmm,,,,,,,,,,,Wait a minute, Rainbow Coalition was founded by and is still run by that same “Most Reverend” Jesse Jackson. Is that called Double Dipping or what? He sends his crows and goons out to slander her publicly, then pretends to throw a ‘life line’. Sounds like someone’s going to be real busy extorting money from a fine American Citzen who’s temporarily down or her luck.

    • stuckinIL4now

Yes, double J, the “forgiven” adulterer himself who trained his son well in the ways of political corruption is going to save Paula whose only sin is that her skin isn’t black or she’d have been forgiven immediately.

  • Leigh

Don’t forget Alec Baldwin. He Tweets the word “Nigga” to Kanye West, calls a black photographer a “coon” (and that incident is on videotape), and calls for the stoning deaths of GOP lawmakers during Clinton’s sexual harassment scandals in the late 1990s, yet he is on every commercial, TV show, or awards program I see these days. Different rules for “progressives” and traditionalists, I suppose…..BARF!
