That Sarah Palin is so dumb. She thought she was taking a swipe at government overreach by pausing to take a sip of a Big Gulp during her CPAC speech today, but really, she was just exposing her ignorance yet again. Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s “arbitrary and capricious” ban on sugary drinks wouldn’t technically cover the Big Gulp® as sold by 7-Eleven®. The convenience store isn’t covered by the soda ban. Don’t you rubes understand Bloomberg’s perfectly reasonable legislation? The New York Post’s Kyle Smith (not one of the libs to which the title refers) sets the record straight for those of us outside New York City limits.

Fortune explains:

Bloomberg’s policy applies to restaurants and delis, but it doesn’t cover grocery stores and convenience stores like 7-Elevens because they’re not regulated by the Board of Health, which grades the quality of businesses where more than 50% of annual sales come from food for immediate consumption. The State Department of Agriculture and Marketing regulates convenience stores. This might seem like an arbitrary technicality, but it’s more than that. Bloomberg’s policy got the OK from the Board of Health, whose members were appointed by the mayor.

In any case, liberals were anxious to pounce on Palin’s “gaffe.” We can’t confirm the following aren’t parody accounts.

Got that? People are dying every day from sugary drinks, so Bloomberg bans them in servings larger than 16 oz., then adds that nothing can stop you from buying two if you’d like more. And if the restaurant you’re in can’t sell you that lethal large cola, you can buy one from the 7-Eleven next door. Oh, and Palin’s the idiot.

Editor’s note: This post has been amended to clarify that Kyle Smith is not one of the “libs” to which the title refers. While it was not our intention to suggest that Smith is a liberal, we apologize for any misunderstanding.

  • disqus_e2F2oUH6C7

Hey dolt, don’t you understand symbolism. She was using the size as
an example. So who is stupid? Symbolism is not in your vocabulary.

    • $8245944

Same thing with “death panels.” The idiots still don’t get Sarah’s use of symbolism. They’re too stupid. lol

      • rennyangel2

Actually, the 400 pages of the Patient Prot. and Aff. Act area full of panels to talk about death, decide how to administer death, even demand wills from the dying and near dead. Read them and weep.

        • $8245944

Sarah used “death panels” as metaphors for health care rationing. Obtuse.

      • Scott Carroll

“Death Panels” aren’t symbolism, they’re realism.

        • $8245944

The words “Death Panels” are metaphors for healthcare rationing.

          Understand now?

          • Scott Carroll

Yes I understand now. The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute or “Death Panel” is metaphorical in the same sense that Obama Is A Profligate Spender is metaphorical. As in totally real. That kind of metaphorical?

          • $8245944

You obviously don’t understand or you wouldn’t have used such a poor analogy.

Find the words “Death Panel” in ObamaCare or kindly hush up and get a life. (It sounds like you are in desperate need of one.)

          • Scott Carroll

“The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s ‘death panel’ so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their ‘level of productivity in society,’ whether they are worthy of health care.”

That doesn’t sound “metaphorical” to me.

          • $8245944

Nice try. I want you to find the words ‘Death Panel’ in ObamaCare. Literally.

You can’t–because they’re not there. They’re just a metaphor Sarah used for rationing.

            Admit it: You’re wrong. lol

          • Scott Carroll

Find the words “Death Panel” in Obamacare? Are you being serious right now? So if I give you a glass of Warm Goat Piss, but I don’t call it Warm Goat Piss, I call it Awesome Tasting Lemon Drink, then it ceases to be Warm Goat Piss because I haven’t labeled it as such?

          • $8245944

Wow! You finally caught on. “Death Panel” is a metaphor just like the Big Gulp cup.

            Class dismissed.

          • Cambria

Umm… What exactly was your point? That you’re a tool?

          • $8245944

How ironic. Pot call kettle..? lol

          • wwbdinct

Yea – like they really would have put the words “death panels” into Disastercare! Anyway, Paul Krugman admitted to it so you lose!

          • $8245944

Exactly! “Death Panel” was never mentioned in ObamaCare so you unintentionally made my point for me. lol
Sarah brilliantly used them as metaphors.

I see analytical thinking is not your strong point.

You obviously attended the disaster we call the public school system.

          • TocksNedlog

So, you’re in favor of school voucher programs then, are you?

          • $8245944

Isn’t it obvious? Someone’s got to be able to think!

          • TocksNedlog

You’re using the semantic argument that if the specific words aren’t there then the practice cannot possibly be enacted?
            Yeah, you’re funny.
Try looking up the phrase “right to marry” in the California Constitution and then tell us WHY Prop. 8 was unconstitutional.

          • $8245944

I never said that, dummy. Read my posts before you attempt a reply.
A metaphor is a metaphor. Sorry.

You fools sound like leftists. lol

        • dukem1

          “Life Panels”, please.

    • Pete Daniels Band

They’re just mad that Sarah Palin brought the house down, and that her cleverness once again garnered national attention. Go, Sarah!

  • CatHerder

Parody goes right over these loonies’ heads. How dare she speak in any but glowing terms of Nanny!

    • Sons Thunder

I lean left more often than I do the right so it’s really embarrassing to me when liberals lose their minds over Palin. I don’t understand the obsession with her.

I think everyone has used the Big Gulp as a symbol of the proposed soda ban – pretty sure I’ve seen Jon Stewart use it on The Daily Show. It’s an iconic symbol. It’s oversized. It’s got a funny name, It’s hard to look dignified when drinking from one. Nitpicking the details of Palin’s joke – one of the saddest ‘gotchas’ ever.

Now, as far as Palin (and pretty much everyone else) making a teleprompter joke which they are reading off a teleprompter… I can’t say it bothers me. Despite the obvious hypocrisy, it has always seemed a lame joke.

Well, not to belabor the teleprompter point. I don’t often find a Twitchy piece with which I entirely agree. This happens to be one of them.

      • rennyangel2

The left fears her: Palin is successful in her public and personal life, articulate, funny, forthright, principled, and refuses to pretend to be a victim a la Sandra Fookup (sp deliberate) and other fakes of the feminist left who embraced Bubba the harasser, abuser, and mabe rapist. And I forgot to mention, Palin is movie-star beautiful.

    • JWSR49

Yep, you could fit 12 liberal brains in Sarah’s head. Liberalism has been proven, in studies, to be a genetic defect.

  • Randi Starr

I thought it was funny…………like a joke. Poor miserable keyboard monkeys…….self flagellation is called for here. It will make them feel better!

    • AaronHarrisinAlaska

It’s called picking at a technicality. They knew exactly what she meant.

    • mdtljt

Better watch out, Randi, the Big Word Police – read lib/progs – will be knocking on your door soon!! How DARE you use terms we don’t understand!! They probably think self flagellation involves the expulsion of certain bodily fluids…so sorry, friends…brain bleach all around!!! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!!

  • v1cious

She took a drink of a soda that’s not illegal. What deeper narrative am I missing here?

    • AaronHarrisinAlaska

So you’re pretending Bloomberg wasn’t trying to ban large drink of the approximate volume of a big gulp?

      • v1cious

I’m not pretending anything, it’s a fact. The ban doesn’t effect convenience stores, only restaurants and venues. Have you ever seen anything even remotely the size of a big gulp at a sandwich shop? ballpark? or movie theater? This is why it’s stupid.

        • TocksNedlog

So . . . your ‘argument’ is that Bloomberg was trying to ban things that don’t exist?

          • v1cious

My “Argument” is that It’s more or less a contingency plan. There probably are a couple venues that fall under the ban, but the number’s so small it doesn’t even matter. Outrage always comes out when the word “Ban” is used. Tomorrow, the president could put a ban on 8-track players, and people would freak the hell out.

  • NeoKong

Ahhh…so some people want to pretend Bloomberg wasn’t going after large sodas…?

    • AaronHarrisinAlaska

If that were truly the case you wouldn’t need to try so hard to make the statement.

      • NeoKong

So Bloomberg wasn’t trying to ban big sodas…?

  • poljunkie♪

She used a fantastic prop to present a metaphor.

Bloomberg wants to be everyone’s nanny.
We got it. Too bad these dolts didn’t.

  • Catchance

If Nanny Bloomberg were really concerned about the high caloric content of sodas being the cause of obesity, he’d have banned the really-high-calorie lattes and drinks at Starbucks, but they were exempt, too. These ninnies don’t get the real point.

  • V the K

So… Nurse Bloomberg didn’t completely ban all sugary sodas, he’s not the Big Government Nanny stater he’s made out to be… But the ban on large sodas is good because obesity and diabetes are serious health issues and they really should be banned because it’s the Government’s job to protect public health.

Maybe liberals don’t start out crazy… maybe they get that way from constantly trying to defend nonsensical policies with contradictory arguments.

    • mdtljt

…more like Wet Nurse Bloomberg…he, along with the rest of the lib/prog nation won’t be happy until we’re ALL sucking on the government teat…

  • Spatial Awareness

So cute. The Left is late…….. even for the little yellow bus.

  • W Randall

Would high capacity clips be exempt if 7-11 sold them? Maybe that’s the loop-hole for Coloradans who are getting screwed out of the “UN-infringed” part of the 2nd Amendment.

  • brewerandpatriot

Maybe those giant sodas were keeping the students from graduating with the skills necessary for college.

  • surilamin

Kyle Smith likes Palin and is a conservative, not sure why you’re slamming him here. His tweets were simply informational.

    • AaronHarrisinAlaska

Dude I’m informational on this site all the time and lean right of center. Some people just see facts as a personal attack on their values.

  • Section 9

Jesus. It’s like they accused her of beating a puppy or something. She was trying to highlight the arbitrary capriciousness of Bloomberg-small delis and restaurants get hit while the Big Chains who can afford the big lobbyists are safe. Idiots! They miss the whole freaking point!

    • Randi Starr

Oh, dog fights are allowed, just ask the right people!

    • Steve_J

      Or, even eating a puppy.

      • rennyangel2

zero is the one who likes a tasty dog. Maybe with a touch of mustard.

  • Steve_J

Don’t 7-11’s in NYC roast hot dogs all day?

    • AaronHarrisinAlaska

Yeah but they’re required by law to keep them at a temperature above 140 degrees in the meaty center. If I’m not mistaken they’re also thrown out once every four hours if not sold.

      • Steve_J

        So they are preparing food?

        • TexSizzle

But they don’t fall under “the Board of Health, which grades the quality of businesses where more than 50% of annual sales come from food for immediate consumption.” (From the explanation by Fortune, above.)

  • Guest

Can’t both Palin and Bloomberg be idiots? It’s not one or the other.

    • $8245944

Sure, it is! Bloomie’s just one of a million idiotic libs. lol

      • Guest

I see what you did there. Again, Bloomie’s nannyism is useless, that does not make Palin a briliiant — or even good — political satirist.
If America was half the librul gulag Palin likes to pretend it is, she would have been “disappeared” a long time ago. But it’s fun to watch her try, bless her heart.
Can’t wait for her War On Xmas book, coming this 1997!

        • $8245944

So glad my snark didn’t shoot right over your head. Color me surprised. lol

Sarah’s smart enough to get your attention, doofus. Now, crawl back under your rock.

          • Guest

            Make me, moron.

          • TexSizzle

            Aren’t you precious?

          • $8245944

I just did, internet tough guy. lol

          • Grandma HeadInjury

Looks like he did. One becomes “Guest” after trying to delete one’s posts. Stay comfy under that rock, Cupcake….

          • RedSoloCup

            ooh, we’re scared.

        • TocksNedlog

          Yer so cute.

    • Adi

All good lefties are moral relativists; they can’t make an argument without moral equivalence and equivocates. In the end leftism has no morale or principles because their platform is ever shifting and changing according to whim.

  • TJ

So how do they explain movie theater part of the ban. If the theater put the snack counter in a different room then the lobby calls it a convenience store inside a theater. Then they can can sell 64 oz. that can be taken into the theater and it’s income will be 100% food for immediate consumption and regulated by the state. Yeah, nothing but arbitrary and capricious.

  • $8245944

Rent free, Sarah, rent free! lol

    • Joseph A White

And those empty heads she lives in are so spacious, too!!!

      • $8245944

True–lots of empty room in there!

  • Rob

Ignorance is bliss. You can explain to liberals how stupid liberals are until you’re blue in the face, they’re so convinced of some mental superiority they’ve dreamed up for themselves, they STILL don’t know they’re stupid. Might as well tell them the sky is green for all they hear. Fortunately, they’ll fit right in over in France.

  • Aitch748

Meanwhile we mere mortals understood this gesture as what it was — a way of saying “I’ll drink as much soda as I want, in as large a container as I want, and would-be nanny tyrants like Bloomberg can freaking go to hell.”

But I guess Palin was supposed to go looking for a 32-ounce cup OTHER THAN the Big Gulp in order to make the statement. SO FREAKING WHAT if 7-11s weren’t affected by Bloomberg’s initiative? Who the hell cares?

    • Joseph A White

Moon bat liberal Palin haters, that’s who!!!

      • kenai

I believe that ‘PDS (Palin Derangement Syndrome) fruitcake brigade’ is the proper terminology for them.

  • Bristel

She not only lives in their minds rent-free, she’s in their hearts too, as dark as those hearts may be,

    • mdtljt

      …and ain’t it sweet?!?!?!

  • Pete Petretich

Sarah has a special knack for revealing the hearts of her enemies, AND making them look foolish.

  • Maxx

Here, I’m going to grab this object to symbolize the brain of a liberal..yes, I know a BB plucked from this Daisy 1894 isn’t really a cerebrum but hey, you get my point.

Symbolism libs…learn it…live it….and because of Sarah today, we love it.

Anyone who is intellectually honest grasped the metaphor so spare us your continued perverse obsession of hate for this woman.

    • TexSizzle

To paraphrase my late dad, if you took the brain of a liberal, magnified it a million times, and put it inside a gnat’s a**hole, it would rattle around like a BB in a boxcar.

  • Leroy Whitby

Holy Crap. Bodegas are banned from having big drinks but 7-11’s aren’t? What the hell kind of arbitrary and capricious law is that? Seriously?

  • Jack Deth

We have Big Gulps to laugh at.

The left has Tina Fey’s “I can see Russia fro my porch.”

When you think about it, Ms. Palin’s use of Big Gulps is funnier. With an extra dig at the ludicrous left. That cause even more liberal heads to explode.

    • $8245944

Sarah didn’t have to lie to make her point like prune-faced Fey.

      • Jack Deth

And once again Ms. Palin has succeeded in her unique capability and near super power to live in so many empty, infuriated heads rent free and “drive the left bat crap crazy”.

        • $8245944

Senator Cruz ain’t so bad himself!

  • rennyangel2

Libs. do not know how to pounce. They are too weighted down with ideology, hatred, and bile. Someone needs to puncture the left with agood pinata whack.

  • Kevin

Thanks Kyle, your clarification made the idea so much less stupid now, said no rational freedom loving person ever.

  • Adi

The Fascist left can’t take irony. That’s why the replies on #askFlotus have been already scrubbed.

  • willegge

These people are so utterly ignorant they don’t get what Governor Palin was doing.

  • Rick

Gotta LOVE Palin! She uses sybolism and the lefties completely miss the point. HAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • wwbdinct

Hey libbies! For once in your lives, try and take a joke….OK?

    • $23293071

As long as Palin is the joke, I’ll keep takin’ her.

      • RedSoloCup

        You ARE the joke.

        • $23293071

Ya got me Two Girls and a Cup, I gotta stop reading Obama teleprompter jokes from teleprompters.

  • capisce

She didn’t know about the Big Gulp, the horror! From the same idiots who refuse to know and dont want to know about Benghazi. Try caring about something that matters.

    • $8245944

Of course she knew! Palin’s always two steps ahead of the leftist clowns.

  • SATURNspike

#libturds where would we be without them?! They focused on the wrong gaffe! Palin…plain and simple…hit all the targets! Can you say “capricious and arbitrary”?! Her point…obvious! Libs…doi!

  • Katielee4211

I think Kyle missed the point. It was symbolic. But I think you need to think outside the box, broaden your mind, to get it.

  • Brian Epps
  • Wrightclick

It’s exhilarating to watch her. She’s so good at symbolism that they think SHE’s the idiot.

  • Wanda Lichtenberg

It doesn’t make any difference whether Big Gulps were technically part
of Nanny Bloomberg’s ban… They are the one’s missing the point.

  • Gallatin

    Kyle Smith
I tire of saying this: BIG GULPS NEVER WOULD HAVE BEEN BANNED IN NYC. 7-11s are not city-regulated. #CPAC2013

So how much did the 7-11 convenience store cronies pay the putz that you voted for THREE times to be exempt from the ban?

  • Guest

I’m astounded that so many fail to see Sarah Palin’s gestures as just taking a well-deserved jab at that Left.

  • Laddie_Blah_Blah

No one else uses humor as effortlessly and as effectively as Sarah Palin. All she had to do was bring out that big gulp and take a sip. I even saw an anchor on CNN with a big grin laughing at that one.

What the Left seems to miss, completely, is that Sarah is the master at using humor to deflate their moronic obsession with telling the rest of us what we have to do. Or to tweak the media for what it failed to do to vet the corrupt political hack from Chicago, who is still in need of a “background check,” himself.

Her zingers have the virtue of hitting multiple targets, right in the bull’s eye, with a single metaphor. The LSM’s failures, Obama’s shady background, the attack on the 2nd amendment – she hit them all with that one-liner.

I am telling you, the lady is a rhetorical genius. And sometimes, she doesn’t even have to say a word – just pull out that big gulp, and all the presumptuous pomposity of the big government nanny state is put into perspective by that simple gesture. That pose is classic and will become an enduring icon of the lady who fearlessly stands for liberty, whether the Left likes it, or not.

Kennedy used humor, but never to such devastating effect. His humor was more smart-mouth frat boy joviality than anything substantive. Reagan used it to soften the political atmosphere and humanize the dialogue, however heated the issue.

But Sarah uses her humor like no one else we have seen in my lifetime. In her hands, humor is a weapon that she wields like a rapier. No wonder she drives them “bat-crap crazy.” Just read the thread right here. Actually, all she is doing is exposing how insane the Left and its politics really are. They make it easy for someone with her wit and unerring insight to draw back the curtain and reveal the bumbling humbug behind the “we don’t have a spending problem” bluster.

Now that Rove, Schmidt, O’Dowd, Murphy, Gillespie, et. al., are in her sights, she will deftly, effortlessly rip their credibility to shreds. Long overdue and much deserved comeuppance for each and every one of them.

Sarah is an equal opportunity wit. She doesn’t suffer fools, whatever their political affiliation. Idiots are idiots, corruption is corruption, and she won’t brook any of them, or any of it.

Lots and lots of ’em here, though.

  • louisiana_mom

They missed the point entirely. Bloomberg would have banned Big Gulps too if he had been able… he banned all large drinks that were within his power.

  • JR48

It was a joke. I’ll just stand here…drinking a soda the size of my head. No worries! Not like Bloomberg is here, or anything. Cute. Symbolic, freedom to do as she likes.

The fact that the left is mocking her with it is not only missing the point, but hilarious in and of itself. Desperate for new ammunition to call her stupid.

As Reagan would say ‘there they go again’…Showing their ever present…tolerance. LOL Desperate little people with desperate little thoughts.

I’m not even a real Palin fan, but watching her do this and watching their response, always makes my day.

  • Conservaguy

Libs are stupid. What the hell do you expect from these lowlife morons?

  • DrLearnALot

If you think slurping from a Big Gulp is some kind of revolutionary act of resistance…well, that’s just sad.

  • poljunkie♪

The Gov brought a prop to her speech. Brillant move!
    We got it.

Bloomberg wants to be everyone’s nanny. Guns, Salt, Soda…Texting. Hey Mr. Mayor, I’d like to control my own life.

  • Billie Slash

Rude, crude, and obtuse—with comprehension this bad, its no wonder these lefties think the economy is doing fine. Too bad stupid can’t be fixed.

  • Moose

That is worse than inviting an Islamist for a “women in leadership” award.

  • Jd1367

    Libs are truly irony impaired

  • bidentime

I’m thinking Bloomberg owns stock in 7-11.

  • ratizbad

Ha Ha Ha!.. Sarah was joking (Not Really) but the left failed to catch on again,The so called president has closed the people’s house.shut out the LSM. So what are you Liberals going to do now,We know,Pay higher taxes, gas, rent and listen to the government tell you idiots what to do., Hope y’all will have time to read the constitution and the bill of rights,And Dreams from my Father? That is a good start.

  • DavidKramer

These are the types of geniuses that said that Clint was talking to an empty chair……….that the preezy was not really there. Oh well, bless their very tiny little hearts and miniscule minds.

  • Kate E

Yea, she is dumb. She didn’t even realize she is not in NYC! The ban only covers NYC. What a moron! NOT

  • Mr.L

Amazing how liberals argue the technicality of NYC 711s & Big Gulps, but when it comes to 4 dead in Benghazi on 911/12 u get WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE? Kyle Smith a good GOP establishment boy. I hope a waiter pees in your soup.

  • stevethird

This kind of literal mindedness is directly connected to the stupidity of the left. It inspires contempt on my part…can’t help it. OK…one more time Libs….Sarah is actually real smart, and YOU guys are the stupid ones. Clear??

  • TeaPartyBarbie

It apparently escaped the notice of all these bloggers that Bloomberg said, after the court overturned his decision, that he was taking his battle to the State Legislature? The Big Gulp may have been immune from his local ban, but it won’t be from the state ban that Bloomberg intends to pursue, so really, she was ahead of the game, not ignorant of it.

  • Julio Hernandez

You liberal dingbats don’t get it. You salivate whenever she speaks and show your ignorance. Sarah was making a point about government overreach into our lives.IDIOTS

  • $27789750

The progs don’t need sugary drinks to send their blood pressure up, they’ve got Sarah. Just try banning her Bloomy..teehee.

  • Stephen L. Hall

They would mock Sarah Palin for a miniscule error, but can’t see just how stupid this is:

    Legal:______ Illegal:

Can these people get any dumber? One more time you little wimps……Deep Breath….PARODY. As in the govt. overreach that pathetic people like you need because you too big of a momma’s boy to take care of yourself!!!!

  • ldwaddell

The issue isn’t Big Gulp, it’s Sarah Palin. The left goes apoplectic any time she makes a speech, writes on face book, twitter or otherwise gets public attention. She has a power over progressives that causes them to go insane, it’s like they’ve exposed to a full moon.

  • YERMOM182

ummm…. except for the pizza, hot dogs, Nachos, finger foods, and microwavable foods you or the store can heat in store, he is absolutely correct 7-11 prepares no food.

  • DavidEKnight

Went out to get a large sugary drink…. what’d I miss?

Oh! The left is still scared of Sarah Palin.
