We’re still trying to wrap our heads around Democratic Rep. John Conyers’ suggestion to start calling illegal immigrants “out of status” new Americans, and now Sen. Dianne Feinstein has thrown us another curve. While questioning CIA director nominee John Brennan at his confirmation hearing today, Feinstein referred to radical Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed in a Predator drone strike in 2011, as a “so-called American citizen.”

Feinstein seemed to be using “so-called” as a term of general condemnation, noting that most people think of American citizens as “upstanding” people. Critics of the administration’s recently leaked policy of targeting American Al-Qaeda members with drone strikes weren’t satisfied with that simplistic definition.

Even supporters of the administration’s drone program might want to raise a red flag over the senator’s choice of words, considering that Feinstein is currently pushing to ban 150 “military style” weapons that “upstanding” Americans now enjoy the right to purchase. When rights are at stake, words are important.

Some so-called Democrats will say anything to justify Obama’s use of killing Americans overseas.

  • http://twitter.com/JoMeShow Joe

Senator, are the Code Pink people you kicked out of the hearing today upstanding citizens? Is George Bush? Ted Nugent? Dems are going to need more drones.

  • SpinMeNot

Well, given her understanding of the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and American history, I don’t find it surprising that she has trouble with issues related to citizenship.

  • detroit19

No, Senator Feinstein, Anwar al-Awlaki was a traitor (one who betrays a trust or an allegiance, i.e. to one’s country), the penalty for which,i n modern times, is execution, life imprisonment, jail. etc. Anwar al-Awlaki was no more, and actually FAR less, a US citizen than Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, Vladimir Putin, etc. Kindly spare me your faux outrage.

Declaring a citizen a traitor and assassinating them without due process.. and then, proudly announcing it to the world doesn’t exactly comport with the concept of the rule of law vs the rule of man.

    • John (it true me am)

You are confused about how the nature of legal status works under due process. Being convicted of treason is an actual legal judgement. As an individual I consider al-Awlaki to be a traitor certainly, but that doesn’t give me the right to play judge, jury, and executioner. And Feinstein doesn’t have that right either, perhaps even more implicitly than I as a private citizen due to seperation of powers.

I’m still on the fence with this — yes, treason is something for which there is trial and due process, all of which are accorded by virtue of one’s being a US citizen, regardless of what crime you may have committed. Actually taking up arms with an enemy power is a different question. It IS something which is recognized as one of the few things you can do which forfeits your citizenship. Granted, al-Q isn’t a government or a sovereign nation, but it is a worldwide power structure which is at war with the United States and many other — if not all other — western nations. I would agree then, that there was a question about his citizenship, although I’m not sure if procedurally speaking there shouldn’t have been the declaration or finding of some court on the topic. Now the kid — yeah, that’s a different kettle of fish entirely, and clearly beyond any lawful bounds.

So the drones will be sending hellfires into downtown Chicago to finally rid it of the gangs? Sweet!

    • tredglx

We can only hope. Start at city hall and work south and west till you reach Peotone and Westchester.

    Let’s connect some dots here.

    – The President can now order missile kills on US citizens abroad if they are deemed a danger or imminent threat.
    – The President can decided if the citizen meets that criteria.
    – Senator Feinstein equates downstandingness with being a danger or imminent threat.
    – Drones are already being flown over the continental United States.
    – There are citizens living in the US that the Dept of Homeland Security has deemed potential domestic terrorists (we all know who)
    – The President wants to disarm the citizenry through a drawn out policy of regulation.
    – The President is using national energy policy to make gasoline so expensive that citizens will be denied the freedom to travel at will.
    – The President is devaluing the Dollar to expedite the rise in living costs and introduce food shortages through artificial means.

    – The President will soon control every facet of the health care of all citizens.
    – A ginormous information storage facility is being built near Salt Lake City to coordinate all control of a citizen’s life.

Yeah, I know some of them sound a bit extreme, but everything is believeable with this guy.

      Anybody seeing a pattern here?

Obama can use drones to kill Americans at will…
He is cutting US military while insisting on a well armed “civilian army” which is what Hitler and others used
DHS (under Obama’s control) has billions of rounds of ammo…enough to fight Iraq war for 30 years
Obama wants to move drones under DHS under his control
Obama has been trying to disarm Americans from Day 1….arming Mexican Gun Drug Cartel was supposed to be reason for disarming US until it went awry
Obama is arming Morsi in Egypt who vows to kill Christians, Jews and gays
Obama armed Libyans who killed our unarmed Seals and Ambassador and are killing Christians
Obama refuses to protect our border, make a budget or even have a debt ceiling
Obama is bankrupting our oil, coal, fracking …entire energy industry… while subsidizing it overseas
Obama has signed endless Exec Orders that give him right to take control of all US industry as well as relocate Americans to “camps” under Martial Law

All the signs are there America! It won’t end well!

  • kim

Sen Feinstein, did you just totally skip Article 3 of the Constitution? It most certainly does not say anything about killing American citizens for suspected behavior without benefit of evidence, arrest, trial and conviction.
    Read it again, please

  • kim

Just remember, HHS has already said that most of ‘us’ are ‘suspected’ terrorists

  • TocksNedlog

Cue the outrage from the left in 3, 2, never.

  • TocksNedlog

When she swore to preserve, protect & defend the Constitution, she had her fingers crossed.

  • Maxx

Feinstein thinks she is the great arbiter for what apparently is “reasonable” guns to own and now she apparently has progressed to deciding who are Americans and who are not. California…why on earth do you keep sending this imbecile to Washington?

  • Guest

If Alwhacky had been a naturalized American citizen,
his activities would have been cause, by law, to revoke his citizenship…
then there would have been a green light to frag him.

Alas, Alwhacky was born in the U.S. and entitled to at least the same due process,
which Obama is so keen to bestow upon the foreign thugs who organized 9/11.

  • John (it true me am)

Considering the number of people who probably don’t consider her an upstanding citizen, she might want to put the genie back in that bottle fast.

  • reneehaigh

what the hell is going on here??? anybody hear of the word TREASON??? they took that pretty serious in the past and why not now?? because it may hurt someones feelings that it doesn’t even pertain to!! so busy trying to appease all the “kill the babies” and “save the trees” people. treason is a punishable by death and it is not only for the military:
anybody out there is thinks in English?? start waking up America or there will be more treasonous people running around with all their rights in tact unlike the poor male puppy you bring home to be your new family member: he doesn’t have that choice but traitors do!!

    • 3beaunabelle

The concern we all have is with a single person having the right to define exactly what treason is. What if its decided that treason is growing your own food and not buying it at the store. Or homeschooling your children. Or making your own clothes. There is due process for a reason. A US citizen deserves the right to a trial.

  • Biggus_Footus

Was that picture of Di Fi taken in DC? Because if it was, I think she might have been in violation of DC’s gun laws by possessing that “assault rifle.”

  • Dexter Alarius

I don’t have a problem with what she said, as long as she supports interpreting the 14th Amendment (… and subject to jurisdiction thereof…) the way it was intended. No more ‘anchor babies’!

    • tredglx

Indeed. Those who use that Amendment as justification for anchor-baby citizenship have not a clue for what it was originally intended.

  • Michelle

    And she’s a so-called Senator.

  • disqus_T3OMimuNii

Someone PLEASE return Feinstein to her nursing home or Mental Hospital please!!!!!

  • Mapache

Awlaki is certainly not an upstanding American citizen, how can he be upstanding, there is some of him over there, some of him over there and over there.

Other less then outstanding U.S. citizens that just come to mind off the top include Jeffrey Dahmer, Al Capone, John Wayne Gacy, maybe someone still alive (other than Chuck Manson) Oh I know, Bill Ayers, maybe that Dorner guy California is searching for. I could go on.

  • 1972patriot

Let me get this straight… Droopy Dog Diane is member to the party that fights for anchor baby rights, yet she calls them so-called Americans…. hmmm. Yeah, they got ya back, dummies. You are nothing but cannon fodder to this witch, as are real American citizens.

  • BeeKaaay

Leftwingwackos are so-called Americans. The real Americans wish that leftwingwackos would leave.

“The killing of Anwar al-Awlaki is a major victory in our fight
against Islamist terrorism and proper justice for the numerous attacks
and plots he inspired or planned against America. I commend the
President, the members of the intelligence community, our service
members, and our allies for their continued efforts to keep Americans
