Here’s some badly needed good news. The 5-year-old boy who was held hostage in an underground bunker in Midland City, Ala., is alive and well and free tonight. His captor,  65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes, who murdered a school bus driver last week, was killed. A relatively happy ending to the seven-day standoff that captivated the nation lit up Twitter.

Many took the news as an opportunity to give thanks and offer prayers.

The hostage, known only as “Ethan,” was taken to a hospital for treatment but was said to be uninjured. He will celebrate his birthday on Wednesday.

Such a relief this ended well. Prayers and wishes for Ethan and his family for a speedy and complete recovery from this awful ordeal.

I live only 30 minutes from where this happened and it was so shocking. Even though I consider myself to be a hyper vigilant mother(to a fault I’m sure) some things are out of our control and that fact haunts me daily.

Glad the child is home safe. This is a perfect example of how the authorities mishandle violent acts. The accused had already shot at his neighbor and had beaten a dog to death with a lead pipe. The accused should have been prosecuted or at the least evaluated mentally. The local police dropped the ball and should be responsible for allowing this person to walk freely with a court date. We need proper mental health facilities and criminals need to have stiff repercussions for the acts they commit.

That last tweet – by Whitney Wilkins – made me wonder what it must be like to be a child today. If adults cannot get their minds around the degeneracy of this period in time, imagine what it must be like to be a child. Even before the shooting in Sandy Hook, and the story of Ethan, there were other shootings and other horrendous stories, and there was all the talk about the supposed end of the world. Adults might be able to laugh that off, how could a child do so?

In all seriousness, if we – as a society – truly do care about our young ones, and the ones still to come; we have to remove the people who are responsible for today’s financial, political and social decay. Either that, or we must remove ourselves from these people.

It is amazing Jimmy Dyke’s gun walked out the door and shot the bus driver and kidnapped that kid and drug him back to his bunker.
Bad gun, it’s not like Jimmy was crazy or anything. Obviously we need to put locks on doors that guns might try to get out of. Then we can ban guns.
