We suppose it’s progress that proponents of gun control are finally starting to pay attention to the ridiculously high number of gun homicides in Chicago. Global Grind’s Michael Skolnik has bought into the myth that 40 percent of guns are purchased without a background check, and now he’s (not surprisingly) adding the race angle to his grab for guns.

More than 500 people were murdered in Chicago in 2012, but it took the Sandy Hook massacre for President Obama to assemble his gun violence task force.

Those cricket sounds haven’t been coming from gun rights advocates, who have long been citing Chicago’s body count as proof that even the most strict gun control laws don’t keep criminals from getting their hands on firearms. And speaking of rights, Skolnik suggests that Americans’ Constitutional rights come with conditions.

What does it mean to fight for a peaceful life for kids in Chicago? Pass a national gun registry? Ban all guns?

If it’s race keeping people from paying attention to gun deaths in Chicago, maybe Skolnik should have a chat with the folks at ThinkProgress, who seem preoccupied with accidental shootings at gun shows.

If this shrub wants something done about the murder rate in Chicago, he should ask Mayor Tu-Tu

Im all for giving Chicago citizens gun rights to protect themselves. Maybe they should get rid of all of their liberal idiotic politicians and start voting in some conservative ones and they may be able to turn their city around.

All of Illinois. Sometimes I want to move to Texas or Arizona.

Then Hollywood should relocate to Chicago or Detroit where they would have enough material for a 20-part movie series.

            Chicago murders, 2011: 431 (15.94 per 100k people)

The most ready to die mentality I have ever seen is from people from Louisiana, conservatives like to claim that criminals aren’t scared in democrat states, I don’t believe that.

          • 1SkepticalChick

I don’t believe it either, although I’ve never heard that statement. I do think it’s one reason criminals carry guns.

It’s Chicago. Only the thugs are allowed to have guns.

But jackasses like Skolnik squeal like Ned Beatty in “Deliverance” when states go for voter ID. Never mind there’s no right to vote in the Constitution nor its subsequent Amendments.

    • TocksNedlog

There IS too a constitutional right to vote!

Just like there is a constitutional right to marry whomever you wish, and a constitutional right to tax people just for breathing, and a constitutional right to kill your baby.

But always remember! While your right to bear arms IS protected, the right of the government to severely limit ‘which arms you may bear’ is not. For example: if the government wanted to ban pitchforks & torches, they could go ahead and do just that!

Come to think about it, perhaps — for their own sense of well-being — they SHOULD do that.

      • Red Fred

There is not a constitutional right to marry whomever you wish, same sex marriage for instance is not acknowledged in many states. The government will be met with opposition, stern opposition, and possibly revolt should they continue this advancement on the liberties of the US citizenship in regard to the second amendment. Don’t want a firearm, don’t buy one. (Similar to the left telling us, don’t like abortion, don’t have one.) Realists taking the time to read statistics regarding gun crime know that banning (so called) assault weapons will do nothing to preserve life.

        • Rick Hess

Amber, Tocks was being more than a little sarcastic, and you fell for it hook, line and sinker. Well done Tock.

          • almarquardt

            No! Really? (Sorry. Couldn’t resist).

      • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ Penny Robinson Fan Club

Not sure how much is dead serious sometimes! But just to be clear..

        1) There certainly is a Constitutional right to vote.

Am.26: 1. The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.

2)Am. 15: 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

Even absent these amendments, notice the phrasing “The right to vote . . . shall not be denied, etc.” These amendments are quite clear that citizens have a right to vote, a right which already exists, quite apart from them.

        2) The Supreme Court is the final arbiter on what any part of the Constitution means, period. Like it or not, once the SC decided Roe v. Wade, the right to abortion does exist in the Constitution. The only way to alter that is for the Court to reverse itself (very rare) or to amend the Constitution.
        /end lecture.

        • DrSamHerman

The Supreme Court is not always the final arbiter.

Sections II and III of the constitution give Congress the authority to determine some types of cases over which SCOTUS has jurisdiction or not by law. Congress can exclude certain cases from any court’s jurisdiction, can re-structure the courts without the permission of SCOTUS, deny funding for enforcement of court actions or place severe limitations on the ability of the court to transact its business. Congress can also pass legislation requiring SCOTUS judges to recuse themselves from certain cases or certain topics. Presidents can likewise hamstring the court to some extent by not naming a justice in time for crucial votes resulting in a draw. Congress and the President could also pack the court with new justices, although after FDR’s blatant attempt to do this, it proved so deeply unpopular that he had to withdraw the proposal.

        • TocksNedlog

Yeah, ain’t it funny how “it’s the law” and “it’s the right way to be” are NOT always the same thing?

When exactly will the left start blaming the perpetrators of those shootings in Chicago, instead of me for exercising my second amendment rights.

  • GoSellCrazySomeplaceElse

Again, I’m so tired of wealthy white liberals trying to, unsuccessfully, speak for African Americans when it comes to racism. It can only come from their own racist souls.

Hey, a liberal finally took notice of what’s happening in Chicago. I guess that’s progress.

we still have family all over in Chicago and Cook County burbs, and they are all actually heavily armed… they just sit on them in case there’s a race riot again (like in the 1960s) and they don’t advertise gun ownership. ( and we don’t care what happens to them: they stayed there, and they’re still union, and they are still democrats.)

  • Garth Haycock

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt; he’s talking about abortion, no?

  • stuckinIL4now

What an uninformed idiot. According to the Chicago police superintendent the majority of the 2,600+ shootings in Chicago in 2012 were committed with illegally obtained guns with the serial #s filed off. Gun sales are banned within the city limits, guns are banned from the streets, and the paperwork involved to register a legally obtained one which must be kept inside your home probably tops the combined paperwork required to obtain a mortgage and complete the most complicated income tax forms. And all mayor tiny dancer does is go to DC and hobnob with his old pals while he demands more of the same stupid ineffective gun laws that aren’t making his own city even safe–not “safer” but just not even safe.

  • Jack Deth

    Memo to Mr. Skolnik:

From John P. Daley, Valerie Jarrettt, Barack Obama and Eric Holder:

Stop speaking about the “rights” of others!

When you have proven yourself worthy of “rights”. They will be rationed and measured accordingly.

Until then. Shut up and start toeing the Party Line!

    • jacksonjay

I think it the well-known racist, Barak Obama who is refusing to talk about all those Black kids being killed in Chicago! If white kids were being murdered in Chitown, Obama would be out front raising Hell!

What an oronmay. Who is he anyway, somebody who has a blog and thinks he’s important?

The most fiscally devastated places, and the most dangerous places in America are Liberal. See a pattern here?

  • Hearns-Jackson-Hagler-Jones

He is right you know after Sandy Hook most people were like how can we keep this from happening again, on the other hand people on here were claiming kids had been killed in China with a knife, blasting the main stream media and saying Obama was happy about it.

  • Finrod Felagund

I’m really tired of liberals using their First Amendment rights to try to take away my Second Amendment rights.

Too many blogs out there can’t some of them give up their precious 1st Amendment rights or something

  • Michael Rice

WHy does he insist on taking away the right of a black person to defend themselves/ See, I can play tehe race card too. And, no, I wouldn’t put the city on lockdown. How many of the Sandy Hook kids were white? How many of teh Aurora victims were white? Did we demand lockdown, then?

  • BeeKaaay

    Bloodthirsty leftwingwacko.

What stupid “thinking” if you can even call it that.

We are apparently selfish because we don’t want to get killed by thugs, criminals, and murderers.

When in reality it is the leftwingwackos who are pro-thug, pro-criminal and pro-murderers that are selfish.

  • almarquardt

I’m confused. How does fighting to protect my Constitutional rights somehow invalidate the same Constitutional rights for every other American?

I am glad to see others (read: Liberals) pointing out the deaths in Chicago, but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons.

  • Spookybuscus

He should stop being so selfish with his 1st Amendment rights and STFU
