As Twitchy reported, at least two football players — Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson and New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz — paid tribute to the victims of the Newtown, Conn., shooting massacre by writing their names on their cleats. Cruz also called the family of Jack Pinto, a 6-year-old Sandy Hook victim who was an avid Giants fan, to express his condolences. If these acts meant something to the families, they’re idiots, apparently.

It’s not certain if any of the Sandy Hook children were Bill Maher fans.

  • Ranadicus

The Miami Dolphins also paid tribute to a fan killed at Sandy Hook:

In related news, nobody cares about Bill Maher

    • Robbie C

Tributes do nothing. There is nothing that proves me seeing a name on a sneaker is going to make me donate, volunteer, or go waterfalls in crying. It’s useless stuff.

      • Jillane Kent

Tributes do nothing for you. Fair enough. Then again, are you the target audience of the dedication? Do you think any of the loved ones who might appreciate the sentiment care that you feel it is meaningless?

      • mdtljt

How sad…you must be a really special sort of self-centered. Showing empathy and compassion towards those who are hurting, when truly heartfelt, is an expression of respect and concern for all concerned. Be sure to tell your family and friends what YOU think about tributes and how they don’t do anything for YOU…and that YOU consider it “useless stuff”. I’d be willing to bet they’d do YOU the courtesy of completely ignoring YOUR departure….Bless your heart…

      • ember

When you lose a loved one your world stops turning. You become acutely aware of how insignificant you are. To have people (especially strangers) take the time to contact you gives you a sense that the world isn’t such a callous place. When a famous person that owes you nothing, isn’t connected to you at all, but whom your child adores, can take the time to acknowledge your loved one and your pain, it provides a moment of clarity in the chaos of grief. We have wakes/viewings for a reason. I hope you never have to learn about this in the loss of a child. But, if you live long enough, you too, will appreciate having someone take the time to acknowledge your pain. It may not ‘do’ anything for the rest of the world. But it will be a balm on your own heart. May God bless you!

      • orringtonmom (D)

i’m sorry… this is about you?

  • Rosie

Bitch and moan some more, Bill. Because that certainly helps. Oh, wait–no, no, it actually doesn’t!

    • Ntr

Well, he’s another emasculated whitebread liberal…bitching and moaning is all they know how to do.

  • Bob Smooper

You have to admit that idolising the poor victims of any crime after the fact is a little bit dodgy to Christians.

    • Joe W.

Christians “idolize” nothing but our Lord God, you blithering idiot. Why are you such an antagonist? Why do you hate Christians as you do?? You are a very sad, sorry excuse for a human being, Mark. Christians will be praying for your soul, however.

      • Brian Mouland

        Just another atheist attention seeker

    • Jillane Kent

Does empathy and sympathy rise to the level of the grievous sin of idolatry?

  • TugboatPhil

Hey, Bill. Is it as stupid as wearing a red ribbon for AIDS?

    • Robbie C

Actually it is. And it’s stupid to associate a color with a cause. Or a race with a month.

      • TugboatPhil

My point is that he’d never call out a tribute to a cause that he supports.

  • Maxwell

And what did Bill Maher do to pay tribute to the victims. Blame the republicans for all things wrong in this world?

    • Robbie C

Nothing. In this caes, I agree. It’s only for selfish reasons. No writing on any clothing will do anything.

      • Jillane Kent

Of course it cannot bring them back to life or take away the pain of the family, some survivors are heartened by public homage on the part of their loved one’s icons. Who are we, really, to say that it “does nothing” when most of us haven’t been in their position?

      • mdtljt

I suppose showing support for someone is only good if it’s written on the hands and put right up under a well-known face a’la the Hollywood Mouthpieces for Obama. He didn’t have a news conference to say what he was doing or complain that not enough people knew about it. It’s called tact Hon…

    • Brian Mouland

Or blame God what an arsehole

  • Michigan J Frog

No one cares what Bill Maher says or thinks.

    • Ntr

Sadly, a lot of idiot liberals do.

  • Steve_J

Why is Maher never in the right place at the right time?

  • George Washington Mclintock

What did he do to remember them? Advocate to make sure that all the conditions that led to massacre stay exactly the same?

  • DDay

If Bill Maher had half the class of Victor Cruz, Derek Jeter, Chris Johnson and all the other athletes and other people who have reached out to these hurting families, he’d have some class for the first time in his life.

He has a dark dark heart.

    • Robbie C

Sorry. The words of an athlete will change anything. If I suffered personal tragedy, the last thing I want is to talk to a celeb. I rather speak to someone who can affect change.

      • Jillane Kent

It isn’t about you, though is it?

      • mickeyco

I think you must be very young or have lost no one important to you. My son died several years ago. I would not have been comforted by a phone call from a baseball player or having a football player write his name on his cleats. But as Jilliane Kent says below, it’s not about you- or me. It’s about what pleases the parents of these particular children. Apparently that phone call or that writing pleases at least one of them. That’s all that counts.

  • Peyton

Chris Johnson also donated his shoes to auction to benefit the SandyHook victims.

  • Winston

Reading these comments just shows that Bill was right: a bunch of idiots.

    • Jillane Kent

Your statement is based upon the false conviction that Maher’s words are fact and not mere opinion.

  • ember

I want to know how much he donated to those families or the community? Has he donated to the counseling of the first responders or those who had to perform autopsies on babies? Did he help pay for extra counselors for students having to deal with returning to school without their principal, teachers, and classmates? Did he donate to the Newtown Mental Services provider? Because I know I want to hear from a guy that sat on his ass criticizing what others are doing.

  • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

Is his tweet even a complete, coherent sentence or statement?

  • James McEnanly

I am unimpressed that he is unimpressed. Aside from President Obama, has anyone ever lived up to this man’s expectations?
