Students at George Washington Carver Middle School and Frances S. Tucker Elementary School in Coconut Grove, Fla., were on lockdown this afternoon after shots were fired in the vicinity.

The Miami Herald reports that the shooting had nothing to do with the schools. A person had been shot a few blocks away, putting the schools on alert. Tensions across the nation are already high following last week’s shooting in Newtown, Conn., and several schools in Michigan and elsewhere have announced they’ll close Friday for “Mayan Doomsday.”
The lockdown occurred at dismissal as many parents were there to pick up their children, leaving them locked down as well.

Sadly, that’s not the only incident reported today. That day off for “Mayan Doomsday” might have sounded ridiculous at first, but it’s making more sense as the day goes on. Threats range from bomb threats to knives to neighborhood gunshots to false alarms.
