It’s one step forward and one step back for opponents of Obamacare’s mandate that employers provide birth control as part of health insurance coverage. Late Friday, news broke that a federal judge had issued an injunction in favor of Tyndale House, a Christian publisher that had filed an objection to providing several forms of contraception on religious grounds.

Today, though, a federal judge ruled against arts and crafts store Hobby Lobby, a family-owned  “biblically founded business” that objected to being forced to provide morning-after and week-after birth control pills as well as some intrauterine contraceptive devices. Though U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton wrote that the court was not unsympathetic to the plaintiffs, he ruled that Hobby Lobby is not a religious organization but a secular, for-profit corporation and therefore not exempt from the mandate.

What options does Hobby Lobby have following this ruling aside from paying the fine? While there’s the possibility of cutting everyone to part-time status to avoid having to provide coverage, some suggest the store consider shutting down.

Is it time for another “buycott”?

Remember how we’d all love Obamacare once we found out what’s in it? Like the lowered cap on Flexible Spending Accounts, and now this?

Do you have, in your petty little mind, the slightest notion of what it is to live in a true dictatorship. I knew a girl who was forced to watch her mother and sister be raped by soldiers with a spear. I knew a journalist who had the courage to write about the government be imprisoned, tortured and killed. I LIVED in a dictatorship and it is frankly offensive that you would dare call this one. You are a shameful, odious, petty, shallow little fool if you think this is a dictatorship. Every person who has ever suffered under one should be allowed to slap you in the face.

      • JimmyNeutron

I understand your point of view here. I also understand the person you are replying to and their point of view. Yes, a dictatorship in a true sense of the word is as you describe and horrible. Yet, for Americans that were raised here…well, we are spoiled. This used to be a great and dynamic country and W. Bush and now Obama, through “Compassionate Conservatism” (read liberal) and Obama’s outright largesse (Romney was correct – wrong to voice it, but essentially correct) – well, it seems as close as we’ve ever been to a dictatorship. We are not used to sucking. We are used to liberty and being better than everyone and overall, not sucking. That is what is distressing many of us.

After searching for these videos, I don’t have the stomach to look for the multiple murals of Obama’s face and symbol that are on school walls across this country. It’s disturbing. And if you don’t see the parallels to other adoration that can and does lead to indoctrination and dictatorship, then… I guess you accept the liberal/Democrat storyline. I don’t know how else to see it.

In case you are wondering: No, I have no direct experience with dictatorships. However, I have talked to many people who have lived through occupations/wars and have seen/lived with/grew up with propaganda and they all told me they felt their hearts turn to stone when watching some of these videos of children singing Obama praise.

Not every dictatorship involves spear-raping. What the hell does that have to do with your employer being forced to pay for the murder of an unborn child? In the history of man their have been alot of atrocities in alot of places. Not sure what any of that has to do with birth control. If you were able to escape from a dictatorship, why are you in such a hurry to help America be one?

      • irishgirl91

It is also a matter of watching it BECOME a dictatorship as opposed to being born into one. We are watching something happen we are powerless to stop. Watching a fireman set fire to your house and looking over as most of your neighbors either applaud or head out for coffee. It is slo-mo and a little surreal.

      • http://www.righthook38.com righthook38

Kelly, while we do not live in a dictatorship, that is a real fear to some. If you listen to people who have lived in a real dictatorship, and have come to America to get away from tyranny, they are scared that this country is headed down the same path. I heard a lady from Russia call the other day, and she was in tears. She sees the writing on the wall, and fears what is going to happen under a 2nd Obama term. This is not uncommon these days. Americans are very worried, and for good reason.

      • Garth Haycock

Interesting, I have met and talked with many people (including authors) who lived under such systems and they will tell you this is how it starts. While the morning after pill is different than the abortion pill, it can still act as an abortifacient (preventing implantation) thus triggering religious qualms. Of course, you most likely knew this and were merely pointing out the differences in classification.

      • Purple State

The morning-after pill is not an abortifacient and does not act as one. An abortifacient causes the dislodging of an implanted embryo. Morning-after can’t do that.

Honestly, this has to be the most one-sided story there is. Why should a secular business be allowed to mandate its employees sexual choices?

    • Dan Thorpe

Why should the government be allowed to decide choices like that for a business? If the business is secular in its core principles, why should they have to go against their beliefs? Dictating to a private business what they have to do is totally trampling the constitution.

Birth control is about preventing pregnancy, not medical care.

        • https://twitter.com/AlessaRosewater Maria

Sometimes it (the pills) can be used to treat ovarian cysts. But it’s not that expensive to buy without insurance. I managed for years to buy it without insurance because of cysts. I’m pretty sure there are other ways to treat cysts, though, without birth control, that would be all right with religious organizations who are against BC. So, yes, you’re right for the most part.

          • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

That’s my point :) If it were being used to treat other medical issues; menohraggia, cysts, as you mentioned, then it would be prescribed as such. Usually, well, maybe it’s changed, I haven’t needed a prescription in some time now (praise the Lord!), the indications are listed in the packaging, or at least on the printout the pharmacist staples to your bag.

          • https://twitter.com/AlessaRosewater Maria

Bingo! Mine always had the reason on the little label pressed to the package when I got them from a pharmacy, and maybe on the bag. (And that reason was cysts.) But, yes, the majority of birth control pill usage IS contraception, therefore why make it mandatory to cover? Like you stated above. Sometimes doctors even give you free samples (30 days worth). It’s cheap!! Glad you don’t need to bother with it anymore.

People do have a Flexible Spending Account they could use to pay for birth control with, even though it caps at $2,500. That could be useful so businesses don’t have to cover these elective services with ACA.

          • SpinMeNot

Or, if they don’t want children, they need to stop doing things that result in children. And yes boys and girls it really is that simple.

It is about personal responsibility or lack thereof. I think those of you that have seen my posts in the past, will know my answer.

          • https://twitter.com/AlessaRosewater Maria

Some of us married people don’t want children either, but we don’t want to stop the fun. 😀 Then again I’ve always had no qualms about digging out my own money to pay for stuff as cheap as that.

But yeah for single people if they don’t want children, they need to abstain.

          • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

      • digitalPimple

And who’s stopping you or anyone else from getting medical care? Hobby Lobby? Some person of a particular faith or non-faith? Are the pills not available to you and anyone who wants them? Can you not readly go get anything you want including an on-demand abortion now a days?

What does some business have to do with the sale of medicine in the US? Nothing at all.

Just because a business/government doesn’t pay for your train ride doesn’t mean your denied access to the train ride.

A business is a business period. A business is allowed to be anything it wants in America. If an employer chooses not to cover something in their healthcare it’s their right. It’s their business not yours or anyone’s. It’s an over reach by government in the private affairs of an American citizen.

You don’t have to like it, but it’s none of your business. You decide if you want to work there or shop there. That’s the extent of your say.

Why should companies have to cover bad behavior? The only time the plan should cover birth control is in the case of rape or medical conditions, unless the company opts to cover it completely for any reason. It would not make much sense to cover it only in case of rape. And you wouldn’t know about medical conditions the morning after. It should not be covered at all. Maybe one day we’ll have a president use this new found authority to ban all contraceptives or force abortion on women who have more then the mandatory children allowed by the secular state.

Do not comply. Conscientious objection is the only way. Let them put you in jail. Let them fine you. But do not comply. Period. This is where we take our stand, hand in hand, arm in arm, and then let God’s will be done.

If we have to march on Washington then let’s get it organized.

The public square is no longer public or open to you if you are NOT a person of some faith deemed ok by some politician or bureaucrat.

Access to BC is not hindered in any way. Who is forced to pay is the issue. A business has every right to control their costs and offer what they like to their employees regardless of WHY.

Don’t like it, shop another job or buy your own private coverage and skip what the employer is offering.

As always, the real losers are the American people. Hobby Lobby will either cut everyone down to part-time, or close their doors altogether.

In WWII my wife’s grandfather was a conscientious objector due to religious beliefs. Despite the profound evil committed by both Germany and Japan, he was allowed based on his religious beliefs to opt out of killing enemy soldiers. (He did help the war effort in ways that did not conflict with his beliefs.)

Were another large-scale war to take place I have no doubt that this administration would continue to allow conscientious objectors that privilege. The owners of Hobby Lobby should be allowed to conscientiously object to being involved in killing babies.

If I were in their shoes I would have to conscientiously object, and the only way to do so now would be to go out of business.

      Well said.

Perhaps it might be a good time for the Millions of religious folk in our nation to organize a grand protest march on Washington D.C. It worked for MLK. I know we typically take the path of least resistance because of our beliefs, but enough is enough.

Limit all employees to 29 hours….problem solved. The new norm….thanks to Zer0bama

25% pay loss, not to mention almost nobody is hiring. Inflation will skyrocket as our dollar becomes worthless. Weimar Republic like collapse incoming. We all know what that led to…

The most accurate comment was the last one. This is the tip of the iceberg, wait until 2014.

I recently read a write up on the decision of the book publisher. A DC Federal court ruled in its favor saying the RFRA (Religious Freedom Restoration Act) is violated by this mandate. National Review has a short explanation here: http://www.nationalreview.com/bench-memos/333687/another-victory-challengers-hhs-mandate-ed-whelan – this is going to Supreme’s too, as well it should.

Wow….you people are truly amazing. While liberals endured 16 years of Reagan and Bush(20 if you include HW)relatively sanely, for some reason, our friends on the right cannot seem to bear two terms of Demcratic president. You self-described patriots are nothing more than a pathetic horde of cowards who scream “Socialism! Communism! Dictatorship!” and running down your country when you don’t get your way or your political standard-bearer loses. Guess what….Obama will be out of office in a little more than four years, and the country that survived the Civil War and defeated the Axis powers, real, actual and factual threats to its existence, will still be here.
For what it’s worth, I understand how you feel. I thought my country was done for in 2004 when, against all logic and reason, it elected George W. Bush to Occupy White House for another four years. But unlike our friends on the right, we didn’t feel the need to run over our husbands or wives or commit suicide or file articles of secession or anything else that demonstrates that we hated 43 more than we loved our country.
We survived Bush….you will survive Obama. Have a little faith in not just yourselves, but America as well.

    • tomincol

True that the country will “be here”. Question is what will it look like?

    • The_Original

We survived Bush much better than we will survive Obama. I have no faith in him whatsoever. History will show him to be one of the worse Presidents EVER! Probably even worse than Carter. I just how much will we have to pay for Obama vacations for the next 4 years? Vacations that none of us have been able to take since he took office. I haven’t been able to take a vacation since the Dems took control of Congress.

Ok, I’m at a lost for words … or rants. What is that old saying, “If you create something that is idiot proof, a better idiot will spontaneously appear to fill the void.”

  • iandrews08

I don’t care about the religious aspect. Why should a company have to pay for what someone does in their personal time?

  • The_Original

There is a Hobby Lobby just across the street from my store. They aren’t a competitor. It is nice to have them there. I sure hope they don’t close their doors.
