You can file this one, along with the Iranian strike on a U.S. drone, the layoffs at Boeing, and PolitiFact’s wrap-up of President Obama’s broken first-term campaign promises, in your binder labeled “Handy things you learn right after the election.”

It’s not a surprising statement from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, but that doesn’t help it to sound any better as the country elects to move forward with the Obama administration’s vision, full speed ahead. Asked Wednesday if he would support raising the debt ceiling another $2.4 trillion dollars, perhaps even before the end of the year, Reid replied, “If it has to be raised, we’ll raise it.”

The silver lining? Even though the Treasury Department last week estimated that America will hit its current $16.394 trillion debt ceiling by the end of the year, Reid doesn’t think it will happen until after Jan. 1. Hooray?

This is what they meant by Forward, right?

https://twitter.com/ramonastewart/status/266262870264799232

Well, there’s not much use talking about what might be hiding in Mitt Romney’s tax returns now, is there? With that looming national crisis out of the way, Reid might as well get back to work on that budget to pass the time.

How about the Republican House? Reid told reporters that if Republicans want to threaten another government shutdown, that’s fine, but “we’re not going to be held subject to something that was done as a matter of fact in all previous administrations” —or by basic principles of fiscal sanity, either. Is John Boehner our only hope? Opinion is split.

    5) 100+ Small businesses lay off due to Obamacare mandates

    6) Boeing lays off 30% of our defense management because they were ordered by Prezzie NOT to issue pink slips until after election. (BTW, our tax dollars will be paying those WARN Act lawsuits)

    7) Stock Market plunges 300+ points

And NOW?…..2 Trillion of more debt coming your way! You voted for it URMERIKA! FORWARD!

Hey dingy harry sometimes you have to compromise to get things done, so please list the 2.4 trillion in spending you’re going to cut to get the increase in the debt ceiling.

  • Scott

Over the cliff we go, where we land? Nobody knows. Hit the gas.
Move all of the aerospace, weapon, and other military contracts down here to the south, leave the union up north and you can cut about 25% off of your labor costs, not to mention the tax breaks etc. Cost of living is much less also. There are plenty of qualified people down here that can and will do the job without the unions running up the cost.

  • Jim

Ok… you want tax hikes? Approve them as a percentage of the GDP only. I’ll gladly pay more in taxes if the GDP is going up. Otherwise f’ them. Lock the ceiling, Lock the Government, Lay off the Military COMPLETELY and tell the terrorist that NY and LA are open for business. We’ll solve this issue once and for all.

At this point the Republicans should just get the hell out of the way and let it happen. No news conferences, no deals, no nothing. Just back way off, or resign. That way they can’t be blamed for anything, and when we finally implode, there will be nobody left to blame but the liberals. Oh, and George Bush.

  • kbielefe

I say we help Obama keep his 2008 campaign promises. A $12 trillion debt limit ought to be plenty for deficits half the size of Bush’s.

I wonder how many times Bush raised the debt ceiling? Where was all this faux outrage then?

    • TexSizzle

Bush didn’t raise the debt ceiling; Congress did.

  • terminator

Republicans want tax cuts, but they don’t want to pay for the debt that their tax cuts create.

Republicans want spending cuts, but they won’t provide a plan to cut anything. We need a specific detailed plan. Do you want to starve children, cut seniors off from medical care, let the infrastructure crumble, close schools, shut down the military? We need details.

    • TexSizzle

Tax cuts do not cause deficits; excessive spending causes deficits. Every time taxes have been cut, government revenue goes up. When the Democratics insist on spending at least $1.40 for every additional dollar that comes in, as they did during the Reagan administration, the only thing that can happen is the deficit, and thus the debt, balloons.

    • kbomz

Yes to all of the above. DO NOT RAISE the debt limit anymore. Now is the time to stand your ground. CUTS, CUTS, CUTS

  • buckbamboo

Harry, Eat more bacon, it’s goof for you!

  • Streetiebird

For those who tune into the short-attention-span rightwing-media: Reagan raised the debt ceiling 18 times. George W. Bush raised it 7 times.

    • Michelle Blackwell

I’m trying to figure out where all this faux outrage was when Bush was raising the debt ceiling.
I guess after the party of fiscal responsibility went around proclaiming deficits don’t matter, I guess they finally realized that deficits do matter. I wonder what changed? Too bad they didn’t realize it before Bush spent the budget surplus he was left by Clinton and then cut taxes and borrowed money from China to finance two unnecessary wars. All with the help of a rubber stamp Republican congress. Yet, no outrage. Weird.

      • TexSizzle

For those who apparently don’t understand the separation of powers: the
president cannot raise the debt ceiling; Congress raises it. Congress
        has control of government spending.

    • TexSizzle

For those who apparently don’t understand the separation of powers: the president cannot raise the debt ceiling; Congress raises it. Congress has control of government spending.

      • Streetiebird

Correct. But the President’s policies can lead to needing to raise the debt ceiling. See: Reagan.

        • TexSizzle

Reagan agreed to a tax increase in agreement for spending cuts. The Democratics increased taxes, but instead of cutting spending. they raised it by far more than the increased revenue they claimed the higher tax rates would bring in. How is that Reagan’s policies? Thinking Democratics might tell the truth and do what they promised?

  • Socal71
