Actress Marlee Matlin was among the first to call out Ann Coulter on her tweet last night calling the president a “retard.” Coulter has since doubled down on her remark, and as opinion is split over whether Coulter overstepped boundaries or not, we thought we’d compile Matlin’s tweets on the subject.

A more positive national dialogue seems like a great thing, but could we lay off of some of those other “R” words too?

Since Matlin is in Los Angeles, perhaps she could have a word with Mike Epps and have him expelled from the entertainment playground for his #TeamRetard swipe at Romney supporters?

If liberals didn’t have double standards, they’d have no standards at all!

  • Avey Owyns

I totally disagree… Liberals, due to homosexuals mostly, have begun to called all forms of insulting and conflict ‘bullying.’ Well, the last I checked, Obama is a grown man – he’s also the POTUS … I don’t think there is a single person who can correctly bully him, physically or emotionally.

…and then one only need remember the relentless ‘bullying’ of Bush for eight years committed by the left. The only reason why name calling bothers them is because they are weak minded. Do conservatives get all up in arms when a Liberal takes to public television to insult a conservative representative?

Liberals are like teen-aged girl bullies. They can go on the attack with a crowd backing them, but if their target dares to throw a punch in defence (or offence , they’ll run to the teacher and tell their mommy.

yeah, damn those homosexuals for no longer tolerating being called every vile name in the book by you and your ilk. And damn those liberals for taking their side. Don’t worry hon, behind closed doors you and your sexually insecure friends can still verbally bash them quears all you want.

Wrong, I am a conservative, a member of GOPROUD and I identify Lesbian. People who call names are not of one party or another exclusively. However, I have noticed that as this election heats up, more and more liberals are on the hate wagon with disgusting language towards conservative women mostly. Ann Coulter actually used a word that in it’s definition can certainly be accredited to the POTUS. When something retards, it is slow to develop, it is delayed. So while this definition has been inclusive of those with slow or delayed development, using this word as slang, is not inclusive of being mean spirited to those born with a birth defect.

You are right about it having the double definitions, HOWEVER she said ‘A’ retard. Therefore it is highly offensive, yet people still think by using it as ‘slang’ they could get away with it. Not true.

With the right topic, I get some marvelous and very funny (I think!) innuendo in! One thread had to do something with food and maybe somebody was giving a too-big piece to the dog, but I scolded them severely, stating I knew what it was like having a big piece of meat caught in your throat. Now what’s REALLY funny, is that I usually catch a few suckers before someone tells them that they’re pretty sure it’s a put-on! Hmm, I haven’t trotted Annie out in quite a while . . . .

Using the logic of the offended, calling someone an idiot would also be hate speech, since that was once the term used to describe someone with learning disabilities. And how about these: backward, half-witted, slow-witted, feeble-minded, imbecile, imbecilic, moronic, cretinous, delayed, dim-witted, simple, simple-minded. Are these too now ‘hate speech’? Let’s not forget dopey, dumb, stupid, one slice short of a loaf, not the sharpest pencil in the cup, not firing on all pistons, fool, jerk, blockhead, bonehead, dunce, fathead, thickheaded, thick-skulled, cloddish, doltish, dense, dim, dull, obtuse, slow, nitwit, senseless, soft-witted, witless, weak, yokel-like.

You know, if she were to call someone who had a serious mental defect, who couldn’t stand up for them self a retard, then it would make her an callous and insensitive idiot.

She didn’t and I’m tired of this crap where if someone says a word, everybody else has to feel offended that the person said that word because they want to make it about them self This is the consequence of collectivism. I’m an individual, if someone says something about me specifically, I’ll deal with it, outside of that I’ll ignore it and move on.

There’s only one mentally challenged person she meant to offend, and that’s President Obama, everybody else needs to get over the drama and stop making everything about them.

Let me invoke Godwin’s Law and end this conversation. “end the hate”? I got news for all of your… some things *should* be hated. HITLER (there, I said) should be hated; his Nazi philosophy should be hated. The philosophies of fascism, communism, Marxism all should be hated. Bad things and bad people should be hated.
So let’s not kid ourselves about “ending the hate”.
I got no problem with people “hating on” Obama. He’s proven worthy.

  • laura_PH

I’m tired of this crap where two weeks before the election we are having a discussion about Ann. Freaking. Coulter. Yes, now’s OBVIOUSLY the perfect time to talk about Ann Coulter and why she’s supposedly right to purposefully use a word that a bunch of people find offensive and another bunch of people don’t really care about but will make trouble for Republicans over. OR we can have a big chat about how Ann. Freaking. Coulter is just wrong, wrong, wrong *infinity* for using the “R” word which is not “raaacism.” It’s all about Ann. Well played!

  • http://www.lidsamy.com/ Lidsamy

is this really the mnost offensive thing Ann Coulter ever said to the Hollywood left?

    • laura_PH

No, just the most recent. Does she have a book coming out or something?

Her most recent book published was “Mugged: Racial Demagoguery from the Seventies to Obama” in September of this year. I don’t keep up with her books on a regular basis, so I have no idea if she’s writing another. *shrug*

Can we stop this “War on Ann Coulter” stuff please? One article was enough, we don’t need 3 of them and it doesn’t need to be the top story especially the day after the final Presidential Debate. Marlee was a Hollywood type… Wonder if she saw the movie “There’s something about Mary”? Not only was a character developmentally challenged but the character of Matt Dillion at one point in the movie said to the effect and I’m paraphrasing, ‘I love the little retards.’

Marlee, care to show me you letter to the editor of major newspapers or you going on talk shows championing the need for sensitivity from Hollywood and that there is no humor in that slapstick comedy they portray and making fun of people like that is not funny?

Or better yet, how about taking your faux outrage and pedal your hypocrisy elsewhere!

Did you mention to her that mild, moderate, severe, and profound mental retardation are scientific terms. They replaced borderline deficient, moron, imbecile, and idiot. Since the victim is allowed to define the terms in this day of political correctness, which term does she prefer we use?

  • brianmouland

    Deaf and also pretty dumb

    • TomJB

OOO!!! YOU CAN’T SAY THE “D” WORD!

I’m afraid I can’t tell you which one, though.

      /sarc

    • Hello Jerry (D)

I was about to say that too.

  • Nell

In the six tweets Marlee Matlin sent out denouncing Ann Coulter, she called Ann a bully, but then she herself used bully-style tactics to try to get others on her side in order to kick Ann off the “political commentary playground”.
Marlee writes “denounce hate speech”. I despise vulgar, obscene words. But, I am a fan of free speech. I don’t want Marlee or any other person or organization declaring what words can and can’t be used. And what does she mean “denounce”? How far is she (or the next elected government) willing to go to “denounce” hate speech? Should people be publicly humiliated, or “expelled from the playground”, or be fired from their job? Well, actually all that happens already. People get publicly shamed for using the wrong words, kids get sent home from school for wearing the “wrong” t-shirt, people get fired from their jobs for using the wrong words. So, how much further does Marlee want to go with the “denouncing” of hate speech?
What if some radical government determined that people should go to jail for using “hate speech”. Oh wait, that already happens in some countries. In fact, in countries with Sharia Law, if you’re guilty of hate speech that could be punishable by death!!
Is that what you want Marlee? I hope not.
And just who in this country is going to determine what constitutes “hate speech”? The government? The U.N.? What if, maybe it’s a big “what if” (and maybe not) but, what if, some future President decides to implement sharia law here in the U.S. There would be ALOT of things considered hate speech, and the “R” word is probably not going to be on that list. Be careful what you wish for Marlee. If you allow one person or group of people to decide what’s acceptable and unacceptable speech, then it is no longer “free” speech.
I think the Founding Fathers clearly thought things through when they came up with the Constitution of the United States, and the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence. So, why bother trying to reinvent the wheel Marlee, when we already have a perfectly good wheel already? You may dislike Ann’s choice of word, but are you really willing to give up your rights just to ensure noone can use the “r” word again?

  • Dr_Tesla

twitchy is becoming the conservative thought police of twitter. they always feel the need to lecture people on minor and harmless comments on twitter.

    • Owen007

Yeah, like those “harmless” comments about threatening to riot if Romney wins, threatening to kill Romney or harassing Stacey Dash.

And note that, YOU are lecturing Twitchy. So apparently, you don’t have a problem with lecturing in itself, just when it doesn’t conform to your worldview. How very sad.

    • TomJB

Yes, because criticizing people about their statements is akin to denying them the right to say them.

  • Dr_Tesla

they will need to change Twitchy to Bitchy before long, b/c that is all this whining about coulter’s retarded comment is.

    • Owen007

Perhaps you should lead by example and change your name to that. Seems like it’d fit perfectly.

  • Owen007

Calling Obama a retard? Completely offensive. Threatening to kill Romney? Uh… uh… don’t use the first R word!

Seriously, if Matlin wants to bemoan offensive in the political playground, she’d better own up and go after anyone that steps outta line. Otherwise, she’s just another stupid hypocrite populating the world.

And I think it would be best to end with a quote from Kevin Smith that sums up Matlin’s whining, “That’s retarded… and queer.”

  • MaryUKtheScot

WTH is this woman!! WHY dosent she get a real job!!

  • littleones

Critics have argued that the term “hate speech” is a modern example of Newspeak, used to silence critics of social policies that have been poorly implemented in a rush to appear politically correct

  • http://www.facebook.com/stephanie.a.nance Stephanie Nance

How depressing to see so many comments defending the perjorative (abusive) use of the word retard!! This is not an issue of political correctness or thought policing. This is an issue of human decency! Ann Coulter is joining the relevancy ranks of Westboro Baptist and their God-hates-FAGS groupies. Why anyone would give this woman a platform to speak is beyond me. She thinks she KNOWS what she’s doing each and every time she finds a way to wiggle the word retard into a tweet, throwing bombs does get quick attention, but I hope that she is soon ignored and overlooked when a conservative voice is needed on TV or radio.

  • Hello Jerry (D)

So Marlee, it hurts that Ann is more of a woman than you!

  • EastValleyConservative

More nonsense. The only time someone screams is when it is done on the right. Despite that most Americans find Ann Coulter tasteless on this, Marlee needs to understand that she will be “expelled” by way of turning away those who watch her or buy her books. No one blinked at Obama’s special Olympics remark and how rude that was, but suddenly, outrage occurs over Ann’s comment. She may not want to play a he said/ she said game, but it is relevant in the current landscape. Giving a pass to the same behavior of others while demanding someone be “expelled” from the political landscape is feigned outrage.

  • Beth Larsen

As someone who spent years trying to be “politically correct,” the whole notion has been taken way too far. It’s hard to know what words you can say from one day to the next. Seems like every day there’s a new hate word added to the “no-no” list. Despite all that tip-toeing around people’s feelings, I’m now called a racist because I’m voting for Romney. Needless to say, I’m over the whole politically correct game.
