Add Russell Simmons to the list of entertainment industry figures rethinking the meaning of freedom of speech in the wake of anti-American protests coinciding with the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Did we say anti-American? Never mind the burning flags; White House press secretary Jay Carney assured the nation that a single YouTube video is the sole target of Islamic rage. Plenty, including Bette Midler and Anthea Butler, are anxious to see the filmmakers jailed in order to appease the mobs.

Occupy Wall Street supporter Simmons, who grew his Def Jam record label by signing controversial acts such as the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy, is now thinking of the Islamic world as a crowded theater that needs policing. And with the feds interviewing Nakoula Basseley Nakoula and pressuring YouTube to review the video, it looks like Simmons might be close to finding a willing speech cop.

One complicating factor?

  • Nastified

Actually Mr. Simmons does a great job here of demonstrating Obama’s basic argument: just because you have a lot of money doesn’t mean you have a lot of sense. Obviously Mr. Simmons did not build that empire by himself.

  • carla5731

Is it illegal to record songs about killing cops?

    • Nastified

      Clever girl ^^

      • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

        Or beating women?

        • Orangeone

Or Muslims burning women, or Muslim honor killings, or arranged marriages, or Muslim men raping their wives.

          • Mini14’sBlkStrat

            or humping goats.

    • Orangeone

2nd EO for Romney, 1st being repeal of ObamiCare.

      • Hiraghm

He’s not going to repeal Obamacare, he’s just going to modify those parts of it he doesn’t already agree with.

        • Jillane Kent

Be fair. He would not be able to repeal the portions that have already gone into effect without the assistance of the legislative branch

    • TugboatPhil

That was my first thought when I saw who was tweeting this.

    • RobX

Crap I tweeted same thing before reading you comment. I guess its true someone has always already thought of it before. ha ha +1 for being ahead of me :)

    • lillymckim

      Common calls it poetry….

    • YERMOM182

No Carla it’s not but it should be illegal to be as stupid as Simmons is.

  • Erica Mathis

Mr. “Target and take advantage of his “own people” with his “Rush” “Debit card (i.e. a 27% interest for poor uneducated black people) Simmons is yet another hopeless do as i say not as I do money grubbing American hating limousine liberal.

    • James Payne

Love your sharp stick, ^^ may I use?

  • AlmaAlma

He has got it the wrong way around!
The change needs to come from the violent Islamists. THEY need to change.
It is one thing to get upset if God and your prophet are insulted, I understand this, but you can argue the point.

  • Mark Stephens

Obviously Mr. Simmons is unclear on the subject of free speech. A movie, no matter how incendiary, is protected. The same could be said for some of the recordings released by Mr. Simmons’ record label. We either have free speech, or we don’t.

    • Orangeone

Americans do. Simmons is welcome to move to the Middle East or Africa with O’Bambi in January 2013.

  • Flagramma

I am sorry they do not understand freedom of speech but if you give in it will not stop there until they want to take away more and more of our rights because it offends Islam . What about all the Christians that are beheaded where is the freaking outrage over this from the Middle East or the USA?

    • Maria

They are too indoctrinated by Liberals and their “tolerance”. People like that view their own people (the American people) as evil and wrong, and their allies. Our enemies then can start brainwashing these tender headed people. I don’t understand and can’t really wrap my head around it, I just know that this is what they do.

  • Lucid_American

Freedom of expression, does it mean anything to these Chuckleheads now that they successfully used it to make there fortunes?!?

  • Claire Adams

Since he’s in the industry, will he talk to @KathrynAbigelow whose film Zero Dark Thirty about the killing of Bin Laden is set to release in October (in time for the election, in time for us to see some unrest to justify throwing us into an emergency state…)?

WH granted unprecedented access for this bin Laden film to be made

WH is denouncing this film, saying our gov’t had NOTHING to do with it. What will the WH say in response to the violence the comes form the one they HELPED make? They are taking the wrong tact, one that will fail them (fail us) next month – they must stand up for freedom of speech.

The rioters are chanting that they are “All Osama” – and retaliating for his death. A film glorifying his killing? Yeah, that’ll go over well.

    Comments, Mr. Simmons?

    • lillymckim

      Excellent! Bravo!

  • twolaneflash

So, the world is Mohammed’s theatre and any word against him is a stampede-causing scream of “Fire!”, and a crime, a blasphemy crime, which we don’t have in America. Is that about it? The theatre was on fire when we got here, and yelling “FIRE!” seems to me to be entirely appropriate and necessary, with automatic weapons.

  • grais

How about you stick to whatever it is that you do, Mr. Simmons, and leave the lawyering to the people who know the law. You’re ignorant and it’s embarrassing.

  • James Payne

I guess he’d really hate the way I’d use my 2nd amendment rights to enforce my 1st amendment rights.

  • aqua1957

typical lib. ban everything They don’t like-babies!

  • Love of Country

Hey Russell …. four words …. Michael Moore, Al Gore!
Call for their fat, ugly heads if you have one iota of integrity.

  • Mickey Byrd

Def Comedy Jam contains content that is truly alarming. I believe that you are responsible for these alarming skits, aren’t you Mr. Simmons?

  • Dio Heerai

What about the KILLING BIN LADEN hollywood film will that not create violence didn’t the white house leak top secret info for it SHOULD WE BAN IT AND JAIL IT’S PRODUCERS
If the want to ban anti religion films GREAT LETS DO IT there are 10000 anti christian films and so called “works of art” for every one anti muslim .

  • Iacobus

What Russell Simmons said might have sounded better in the original German…

(Yes, I just called him a Nazi. At least here it’s appropriate since he’s suggesting people be silenced.)

I’m just trying to wrap my head around the fact there are liberals who think all this is a silly little film’s fault. No, no hatred for America and the West here ***which has been festering for what seems like eons now and was already there***. Move along.

    • TexSizzle

Google Translate is a wonderful thing. It actually does sound better in German.

  • Jimmy Z

I can’t wait for Twitter to be up and running again so that I can have words with this POS. It is amazing how many Americans don’t understand free speech. Hey Simmy! If you want a land where you cannot speak out against the HORRORS of effing Islam, MOVE TO THE MIDDLE EAST! They’re all set up and ready to go, you horse’s ass. Good Lord God Almighty —

  • DianaRae_FL

If Simmons is saying this man should be arrested, then he has to also say Bill Maher needs to be arrested too. He made an anti-Islamic film. But, of course, no one is talking about that.

  • Goldenah

Then Uncle Russell should be locked away for life.

  • Abe Stract

Another disconnected lib hypocrite,. that stills argues that violent rap music was a form of ‘poetry’ and shouldn’t be censored. Liberals & hypocrisy,..go hand in glove.

  • DeadBuffalo Blog

I think Simmons should be locked up for “Def Comedy Jam”

  • $129448

It should be illegal to be that dumb

  • Josephine (D)

I want to ban any and all movies that insult the Old Testament prophets(you know, anti-Semitic), Jesus(anti-Christian), and the Blessed Virgin Mary(anti-Catholic). Is that okay? Oh wait…

  • brianmouland

You are a millionaire from promotng violence Russell

  • NWFL Conservative

Actually Russell, yelling “fire” in a crowded theater where no fire exists is NOT technically illegal, but you certainly have to accept the consequences of your actions for anything that ensued as a result of them. And of course there could most definitely be legal consequences if anyone is hurt or killed. Kind of like the consequences you should be forced to accept for the lyrics in your “songs” which endorse killing police officers or battering “ho’s ‘n bitches”. I don’t consider hip hop to be music, it is nothing but mind numbing noise, so I used the word “song purely for illustrative purposes. But never let a lie get in the way of you showing your epic stupidity, Simmons. Out of curiosity, how do you manage to breathe with your head that far up your rectum?

Luckily for you bruh, STUPIDITY is not illegal, or you would be on death row awaiting your date with the needle, yo, peace out.

    • Hiraghm

Darn. I didn’t read your comment before making mine.

  • Maria

What an ignorant person. He’s hateful and promotes violence, yet he’s kissing Islam arse. I guess birds of a feather must flock together. Both hate authority, women, and free speech.

  • Laura

These same celebrities who have no problem with offending Christians using taxpayer money, no less, now want to imprison critics of islam. Liberals are hypocrites and cowards.

  • EastValleyConservative

It amazes me the stupidity that comes from such “enlightened” 1%ers who ignore the fact that they ARE 1%ers. Seriously? Comparing the yelling fire in a crowded theater to a barbaric bunch of radicals who use anything as a pretext to go jihad…..seriously? He is just another example of how stupid this country has become. If he truly isn’t this stupid, then he is a liar and a hypocrite which is worse. There is no cure for stupid, but there is no excuse for the other.

  • Rick Bowser

This from a guy who has rappers signed to his label, that produced equally or more offensive material, and made millions doing it!? With Mr. Simmons, the word…HYPOCRISY comes to mind!

  • lana ward

The best thing to happen is they all kill each other off. GOOD RIDDANCE

  • Hiraghm

Holmes’ decision was wrong. And he was silencing a man who used his 1st Amendment rights to protest the draft. He used twisted logic to A) conclude it would interfere with the gov’t’s recruitment efforts (draftees aren’t “recruited), and B) it somehow involved a clear and present danger that we weren’t able to fully participate in a war halfway around the world that had nothing to do with us.

It is perfectly within one’s rights to shout “fire!” in a crowded theater, even if it’s not on fire. if there is a panic, if there are too many progressives in the audience and too few conservatives, and someone gets trampled or property is damaged in a rush to the exits, *then* one is responsible for the harm done. But the speech itself is still a protected right. And even if there is no harm done, the theater owner is still within HIS rights to throw your arse out on the street for disrupting his movie presentation on his property.

Preventive laws, particularly with regard to the freedom of speech, are among the greatest banes to our free republic in existence. They hamstring freedom in the name of obscure security concerns, and take authority away from individual people and grant it to bureaucrats.

  • will brealey

It’s easy to make clever remarks about this not being ‘a fire in a crowded theatre’, when you are not in that crowded theatre. Unlike the embassy staff who have to deal with the outfall from these events. I think it’s a disgrace how hardline Muslims go nuts over this sort of thing, but they’re nothing if not predictable, so why prod them? However the real ‘inciter’ was the person who *translated* the video into Arabic. We can argue about the film maker’s motives, and from what I’ve seen, and comments by the duped cast members, the film seems to have been thrown together quite deliberately to cause this sort of reaction; but whoever decided to translate and distribute the film, making it coincide nicely with 9/11, clearly intended to sow havoc.

  • Tom

it is not the film you moron, if that were the case every anti christian comment, documentary that rolls out of Holywood would need to be banished, this is the US government assisting the Muslim nations in establishing Sharea Law and protecting it from anyone who doesn’t agree with it, google it they are nuts, talk about a war on woman.

  • peaceman2244

this guy is a loser.shut and go to hell

  • TocksNedlog

Like most lefties, Simmons brings up the question of “intent”.

  • frank002

Mr. Simmons, you are an idiot. Did any violence break out when Martin Scorcese made “The Last Temptation of Christ”? Did gangs of rampaging Christians kill people, burn cars, destroy buildings? Could you answer that you moron? Shut up and keep kissing OblameBush’s ass. You are IRRELEVANT.

  • Anne Lynch

Another never was gasping his last…

  • Pushbroom

If this was an isolated incident with the muslim animals, it would be relatively easy to place blame on a film. However, they have acting like savage cave men since the sixties. #nothingnew #letsjustkillamericans

  • aqua1957

free speech only for hollywood, music industry and left wing media-i get it, now.

  • Joe

Obama and the Democrats have for years denied we are at war with radical Islam. Even Bush seemed to be confused. THEY are at war with us regardless of what we say.
Yet the Democrats and progressives are now increasing their troops and word war against Christians and others in favor of what is becoming the State Religion of Islam which is the only PROTECTED religion. But Islam is not just a religion but a politic. It is the law.

    أنا لن يستسلم

  • Owen007

Odd, for people with no skiing equipment, I sure see lots of talk about heading down slippery slopes.

    • John Hanover

Don’t mention ” snow ” to Simmons he is a music mogul.

  • Owen007

Odd, for people with no skiing equipment, I sure see lots of talk about heading down slippery slopes.

  • John Hanover

Well bankrolling a bad stereotype through ” borrowed ” music samples and discussing pimping and illegal gun possession and the use of cannabis other than that which is medically prescribed could be illegal too Simmons. Should we arrest you and detain you while we start an investigation on how you made your money off the ignorant and possibly brainwashed? Rap and Hip Hop now sound like the Muslims eh?

  • DirtyDave

The man’s an idiot, pure and simple. The perfect Obama supporter.

  • HopeyChangey

He’s made a fortune based on racial marketing. People don’t segregate like that unless they have a disdain for other races. He’s made money on hate.

  • David Gillies

I always get him confused with that dude with the perm and the unitard.
