As of today, it is officially legal to get your reefer on in the state of Colorado. Naturally, advocates of the new policy are rejoicing on Twitter, and for some reason they all sound Rocky Mountain high.

Well, you could maybe not smoke weed. That would help with the tests.

Great. We now have a “Don’t Toke and Drive” campaign. Nice work, Colorado!

I read this site everyday and agree with most of what’s put on here, but what is Michelle’s problem? They legalized a drug that doesn’t hurt your body, doesn’t make you wanna hurt anyone and gives people pleasure. I agree, just like alcohol, you shouldn’t be able to drive, but weed is safe and this is coming from a former smoker. Lighten up Michelle.

They’re not really big on freedom. It’s more about control.

    • Maxwell

Actually, many scientist will admit that how little we know about marijuana is scary. Most scientist admit that marijuana use in teens can lead to lower I.Q. and one study has suggested that it can lead to testicular cancer. Not to mention that burning anything releases tar, which is also harmful to your body.

Don’t get me wrong, I support it from a constitutional standpoint, but by no means is marijuana any safer than a cigarette or a drink.

      • Finrod Felagund

Since the government actively discourages marijuana research, it’s no wonder we don’t know near as much about it as we could. One thing we do know, however: no one has ever died from an overdose of marijuana in the entire history of civilization.

        • Sad Chestertonian

How ever, artificial stupidity has gotten people killed. I support medical THC, which is safer in non smoke, areosolized form. But I think the patients should have their licenses revoked, and supervised regularly to prevent stupid, dangerous behaviors. Clam baking should remain illegal, as it threatens second hand exposure to those who do not want it, or need it.

Yes, it is not as healthy as say a plate of kale and yes, hot smoke into your lungs is not the way of the health conscious. I would like to propose though that the amount of weed that is needed to reach a “high” is less than alcohol and the after effects are radically different. The impairment qualities of a weed V.S. booze high are different as well. When compared to cigarettes (which frequently happens) there is a small high that needs to constantly be maintained. While the average pot smoker may smoke a joint or two a day, the average cigarette smoker will consume around 20 a day.

It’s the Pax. The G-23 Paxilon Hydrochlorate that we added to the air processors. It was supposed to calm the population, weed out aggression. Well, it works. The people here stopped fighting. And then they stopped everything else. They stopped going to work, they stopped breeding, talking, eating. There’s 30 million people here, and they all just let themselves die.
Watch out for the ones who turn REAVER!

And – she voted for Harry Browne? Where did she get lost? Michelle, come back to the small government tent!

So weed in Colorado is now legal but there are no longer any Hostess Twinkies. I don’t know what this means, but perhaps it’s cosmic.

So why did it take a Constitutional amendment to ban alcohol, and another one to repeal the ban, but pot didn’t need one?

    • Maxwell

Because pot use is still illegal on a federal level. If a federal prosecutor decided, he could charge pot smokers with a crime. If pot use becomes legal on a federal level, then it may require a constitutional amendment.

      • Finrod Felagund

Swing and a miss. If a constitutional amendment was necessary to ban alcohol at a federal level, then one is necessary to ban marijuana as well. Then again, our government hasn’t been following the Constitution since the days of FDR, really; ever since judges and lawmakers decided that growing something on your own land for your own consumption somehow affects interstate commerce.

By the way, did you know that even though marijuana is classified as Schedule I (no medical use), the federal government runs its own medical marijuana program, and has since 1976? Look up the Compassionate Investigational New Drug Program sometime.

        • Sad Chestertonian

What about synthesized THC? It can be areosolized, put in a breatholizer, and potentially prescribed by doctors. The problem is that you have selfish stoners on one side who think anyone should toke if they want, which is very irresponsible, but then you have the blanket banners who refuse to listen to those in pain who swear nothing else helps. How is it that the FDA was able to perfect medical opiate regulation 100 years ago, but still can’t find it’s rear regarding the possibilities of THC?
I would never use the stuff unless I was in agony, and my Docprescribed it. I do not like having my mind addled, and any one who does is offending one of God’s great gifts, but compassion, and peace of mind trump clarity.

        • Cyrena

BINGO! This is a case of a federal bureaucracy creating ‘law’. A bunch of bureaucrats decided which drugs went on which schedule. It has nothing to do with ‘addictive potential.’ Cocaine is a Schedule II.

Just to be clear, “use” is not illegal, “possession” is. Obviously, you have to possess it in order to use it, but you don’t have to be a user in order to be busted for possession.

  • stuckinIL4now

And some dumbmass college kids at U of CO have already made several people sick, including their professor, by feeding them spiked brownies, unknown to the victims that pot was in the brownies. Is this how it’s been legalized? A coupla idiots are in big trouble.

    • Eric

That is an example of people showing poor judgment and possibly a mean disposition. You do not condemn brownie mix or Collage because of this, why condemn marijuana? The fact that it was pot is irrelevant to the act, it could have been made of laxative or worse, poison.

I’m all for legalization, but I can’t help but think that, thirty or forty years down the line, we’ll start hearing about lawsuits filed by marijuana smokers against their dealers (or hell, I’ve heard that Marlboro is planning their own line of marijuana cigarettes in the event that it’s legalized in the US) when those smokers develop lung cancer.

How is a site that does so well promoting LESS government bashing marijuana constantly?

I hope none of you anti-weed posters drink alcohol, because legally it SHOULD be the same thing and medically alcohol is much worse for you. Period.
