‘Facepalm’: Joe Biden refers to St. Thomas More as ‘Tommy’

Joe Biden is in Iowa for former Sen. Tom Harkin’s annual steak fry, and he spoke of St. Thomas More as if he was just a buddy Joe hangs out with at Home Depot. According to Biden, that’s how Catholics refer to him, but tweeters don’t seem to agree:

By “we Catholics,” Biden must have meant “just me.”

“And all the trees having been cut down, Roper, where wouldst THOU hide, when the devil turn upon thee? I should give the devil the benefit of law, that I may have it too,” quoting Chancellor Sir Thomas More, to his son-in-law, William Roper, on why you shouldn’t begrudge the devil the use of the law; Roper had argued that the law was like a forest in which the devil hides behind every tree.

Biden and company are the “Ropers” of the world, who seem not to mind taking away other people’s rights when it’s all in a good cause, like fighting us devils.
THAT’s what’s ironic about his even mentioning Thomas More, 4fuxsake!

Biden still refers to himself as a Roman Catholic? Hey Joe, you can’t be PRO-ABORTION and Roman Catholic at the same time. It just does not fit. And no it is not Tommy More it is St. Thomas More. You say it respect joe. Respect. Something you liberals know very little about from my point of view.

Just want to point out a slight error- Senator Harkin is a current senator, not a former senator.

Anyway, I am a Catholic and I have never referred to St. Thomas More as Tommy More. That is one of the dumbest things Joe Biden has ever said (although the competition for his dumbest quote is fierce).

I was also thinking about his stance on abortion rights in comparison to the beliefs of Catholics, but I see others have already commented on that, so I won’t add to it,

Guys, I hate to admit it but he’s right. I’m a Catholic from Philly and we had a high school named St Thomas More but EVERYBODY called it St. Tommy More. Here’s a link to their alumni webpage (the school is now closed) wherein they refer to it as Tommy More multiple times http://www.stmforever.com/

  • Scorpion

“Tommy More”, in the Philadelphia area is an affectionate term for a now closed Catholic High School. That is how the school was referred to by alumni and opposing sports teams by people of a certain age. It wouldn’t be that big a deal in that area but in Iowa, not so much.

  • Right Wired

He’s no Catholic, by the way. Supporting abortion is automatic excommunication (excommunication latae sententiae) according Catholic Cannon laws 751 and 1364.

    • Belial Issimo

Cannon law, I like that. Shot straight to Purgatory, ka-BOOM!

      • David Raineri-Maldonado

Actually, it’s “CANON” law, and he’s going straight to…the Outer Darkness, as our LORD says.

        • Belial Issimo

          Really?

          • David Raineri-Maldonado

What, exactly, gives issue about what I said?

          • Belial Issimo

Nothing really, you just seem to be kind of a humorless git with an imperfect understanding of Catholic theology. You might read up on what Tommy Aquinas has to say on the subject.

          • David Raineri-Maldonado

Ahh…an argumentum ad hominem, coupled with an evidenceless assertion (while I DO have an imperfect understanding, we ALL do, as we finite beings are trying our best to comprehend the Infinite, Being Himself.) Also, as it is coupled with a mortal sin (“material support for another’s sin”), this type of excommunication, as it does NOT allow one the Sacrament of Penance, DOES condemn one to the Outer Darkness.

          • Belial Issimo

Not an argumentum ad hominem at all; it’s a straightforward attack on you for being both humorless and uninformed. Neither basis of attack is employed for the purpose of rebutting your argument, which is incorrect for reasons having nothing to do with your own shortcomings. As I understand Catholic dogma, there is no “type” of excommunication, whether for a mortal or a venial sin, that cannot be absolved – repentance being in fact the primary goal of excommunication.

But what do I know? I’m just a minor demon.

    • JonInVa

not to mention his gung-ho support for gay “marriage”. Like Pelosi, everything he stands for makes him a public heretic and auto-excommunicant, but they don’t care.

This is how Catholics in the little, imaginary world Biden lives in refers to him, not the real world.

  • Edward Connolly

I am no defender of Joe Biden, that’s for sure! However, in fairness, I must say that referring to St. Thomas More as “Tommy More” was not considered disrespectful in Philadelphia from whence I come. To be precise, the reference was to St. Thomas More High School in Philadelphia, not to the saint himself. I did not attend that particular Catholic high school, but kids who did attend it invariably said, “I go to Tommy More”. Parents would say, “Yeah, my kid goes to Tommy More.” I remember chanting, “Beat Tommy More” at various and sundry football and basketball games. So, I’m going to give the VP a pass on this one.

    • http://www.black-and-right.com/ IceColdTroll

Yeah, but I think a distinction can be made between referring to a school nickname versus the actual person.

  • jelun

That’s funny, I guess all of those Roman Catholics are not familiar with Thomas Moore U. in Australia.
Do you suppose they are the first and only folks to make that reference?

  • Jeremy

    dumbass.
