David Axelrod credits Obama’s ‘credible’ (but unbelievably small) threat for possible Syria deal

It’s been weeks, so it’s difficult to pin down exactly which part of President Obama’s threat of a strike on Syria finally wore down Bashar al-Assad to the point where he’d consider giving up his chemical weapons to Vladimir Putin. Was it Secretary of State John Kerry’s promise that any strike on the country would be “unbelievably small”? The White House official saying it would be “just muscular enough not to get mocked“? Maybe it was Kerry’s air quotes around the word “war” and the emphatic promise that no U.S. troops would touch Syrian soil.

Nah … it was definitely Obama’s masterful psy op campaign, saying that any military response wasn’t “time sensitive” and then going golfing.

All you need to do is get rid of them RACISSSSSST voter ID’s….then you can vote 1000 times.

        is the tag needed?

        • Anonymous

Is it racist to have to show ID to buy a pack of cigarettes? or a beer? How about boarding an airplane of entering any Govt building. Is it racist to be required to show ID to buy a weapon or open a bank account? Yes, prove who you are, then exercise your right to vote. If not wanting illegal immigrants, any non-citizen of the U.S., or someone from another district voting for our elected officials makes me racist, well, so be it! Yes, all of that happens.

Your argument is racist. This forum is racist. I think my keyboard is racist too.

It will be “fun” if they work it that Russian troop are to be stationed in Syria to protect the Chemical weapons from being stolen or sold to the rebels. They are to say in Syria ready to be mixed and used and not shipped to Russia or anywhere else to be neutralized. How will O’s credibility be then instead or remove from the field of battle the chemicals will have Russian troops as human shields protecting them.

  • Spasmolytic

Your incorrect Axelturd, Obama was on the brink of starting WWIII and Putin came to the rescue. Looks like your liberal ‘messiah’ was outdone by a Russian peace keeping effort.

    • SpiffyMclure

Granted, Axlerod’s a bit of a dink, but he’s basically correct in his statement. The situation in Syria is still fluid. Putin has suggested a way out for Assad to avoid US military strikes that sees chems taken out of the equation. At the moment, we’re not even sure if Assad will take up the offer – we only know that some Syrian minister has said they’re warm to the idea – but they wouldn’t even be considering the deal if there wasn’t military intervention on the table. I don’t get the shifting RW outrage – you were mad that Bamz was threatening an attack. Now you’re mad that this strike may be avoided. If you actually believe that Obama was “on the brink of starting WWIII” (which he wasn’t,) surely you should be thrilled about these new developments, whether Putin is involved or not. Big picture stuff and all that.

      • tops116

“I don’t get the shifting RW outrage – you were mad that Bamz was threatening an attack. Now you’re mad that this strike may be avoided.”

Oh, don’t try to turn this around, you self-righteous hypocrite. The reason people are criticizing Team Obama is because after more than a week of “We have to attack now because time is of the essence”, they’re flip-flopping to dithering and expecting no one to notice.

Of course, the flip-flopping should’ve been expected since Obama built his political career on opposing unilateral wars and was hell-bent on engaging in one. And unlike Bush, he wasn’t too willing to go to Congress first.

“If you actually believe that Obama was “on the brink of starting WWIII” (which he wasn’t,)”

You might want to take that up with Obama and Reid, who kept making the WWII comparisons. Oh, but much like “the red line,” I guess that’s not their fault.

“Big picture stuff and all that.”

Like how attacking Syria could trigger a regional war? Funny how liberals weren’t thinking about the big picture when Obama was in a rush to go to war just to save face.

And speaking of the big picture, what happens if it later turns out that Russia and Syria lied? What are you gonna say then? “It’s the GOP’s fault for not listening to Obama.” Uh-huh.

        • Hiraghm

Big picture… we should have won the “regional war” TEN YEARS AGO, with the entire region under American control.

          • Ronald Green

The last thing we need is to be in control of That area. Better to let the muzzies kill each other than unit to shoot at us.

        • Gary

I haven’t changed my position from the beginning. You must be speaking about someone you’re imagining in your head. As far as I can tell, RW (you forgot to add ‘nuts’) have been consistent. Your beloved President is the one who has swung like a monkey grabbing onto a chandelier.

      • Hiraghm

I was never opposed to attacking Syria. I’m always in favor of attacking our enemies. What I opposed was a pointless and costly session of sabre rattling.

I bet you’re still convinced there were no WMDs in Iraq, too.

        • SpiffyMclure

“A pointless and costly session of sabre rattling.”

Apparently not exactly pointless. Syria is just now announcing they will give up chems to international control.

“I bet you’re still convinced there were no WMDs in Iraq, too.”

          Bush and Cheney certainly are.

    • Hiraghm

No, Obama was NOT on the brink of starting WWIII. Learn to count. WWIII ended in 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed.

The third world war was more commonly known as the Cold War. Technically we’re still in the middle of WWIV, that blossomed in the wake of 9/11, and which nobody except the enemy wants to fight as a war.

      • Spasmolytic

Incorrect, a world War involves most of the international community. Neither The Cold War or the war against terror can even come close to the military involvement of the first and second world wars. Unlike modern day terrorism and The Cold war, major conflicts in the past involved hundreds of thousands of men being drafted by many nations.

Your knowledge of history is remedial at best, it might be time to repeat the 4th grade.

        • Hiraghm

Then you don’t know what was involved in fighting the Cold War. FIFTY THOUSAND Americans died fighting the cold war in Vietnam alone. The entire modern American global military structure was built in fighting the cold war. And if you don’t think our allies and multiple enemies were involved, you don’t know history.

“The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.”

“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win”

“Supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy’s resistance without fighting.”

          ― Sun Tzu,
          The Art of War

In fact, Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee all died fighting the cold war.

WWII was won more in the factories of midwestern America than on the battlefields.

Everywhere Matt Ridgway went, however, he found the same question in men’s minds: What the hell are we doing in this godforsaken place?

If men had been told, Destroy the evil of Bolshevism, they might have understood. But they did not understand why the line must be held or why the Taehan Minkuk – that miserable, stinking, undemocratic country – must be protected.

The question itself never concerned Matt Ridgway. At the age of fifty-six, more than thirty years a centurion, to him the answer was simple. The loyalty he gave, and expected, precluded the slightest questioning of orders. This he said:

The real issues are whether the power of Western Civilization, as God has permitted it to flower in our own beloved lands, shall defy and defeat Communism; whether the rule of men who shoot their prisoners, enslave their citizens, and deride the dignity of man, shall displace the rule of those to whom the individual and his individual rights are sacred; whether we are to survive with God’s hand to guide and lead us, or to perish in the dead existence of a Godless world.
          – T. R . Fehrenbach, “Proud Legons”, on the Korean front of the Cold War

  • Spasmolytic

Your incorrect Axelturd, Obama was on the brink of starting WWIII and Putin came to the rescue. Looks like your liberal ‘messiah’ was outdone by a Russian peace keeping effort.

If one is going to win; he must act; not react. Appropriate actions deter the enemy’s efforts to destroy. It’s true in every facet of our lives, and more especially in politics. If one is to lead, he must be confident in his actions, and to be confident, he must be right. Washington hasn’t been right in so long, that they’ve no longer the confidence to lead. They’re always reacting; never acting. They’re going to loose. The enemy is going to back them into a corner and snuff them out. If America survives, then there must be a massive turn over in Washington.

If Syria really does give up the CWs via Putin bailout then someone should check the size of Putin’s bank account, before and after Obama and Putin attended the G20. In the wake of the hyperbolic hysteria, the only “credible military response” to someone using “unacceptable” WMDs, and murdering hundreds of “the chillllldren” would be a full scale invasion of Syria, conquest, appointment of American governor-general and imposition of martial law. I don’t see that happening.

Don’t get me wrong; that was also the only credible military response to 9/11, and ultimately Bush blew it when he stopped to nation-build instead of conquering the entire middle-east while he had the momentum to do so.

I believe one of our major problems is are lack of military strength. Our military is just plain tired. If we want to capture Assad’s chemical weapons we are going to have to put troops on the ground. I heard on the news from a 4 star general that it would take approximately 75,000 troops to properly secure the chemical weapons. Now that is a lot of soldiers to be sent to Syria. Our other option would be to destroy Assad’s military assets. This is a unreasonable solution because the rebels are nothing more then Muslim thugs who would like Sharia law. The United States has very little influence left in this world, due to President Obama. For example, he draws a red line and does not follow up with it. I feel very sorry for my children, because I believe the Middle East is going to get a lot worse!
