Tweeters not sure what to make of Iranian president’s Rosh Hashana tweet

With Jews around the world beginning their celebration of Rosh Hashana, wishes for a sweet new year have come in from a surprising source:

That’s Hassan Rouhani, Iran’s new president.

His Rosh Hashana tweet is a far cry from the sentiments expressed by his predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Reactions across the Twitterverse are mixed, with many applauding Rouhani’s more “moderate” message to Jews:

No one, huh? Actually, quite a few tweeters are at the very least skeptical of Rouhani’s sincerity:

Others are just not feeling Rouhani. At all:

Hi Marjorie!! We are giving away our age, it would seem…..lol

      • Marjorie

Just turned seventy…feel about forty…body thinks it’s well over one hundred…memory is toast…eyesight is shot…can’t hear (which is a blessing sometimes especially if Obama is driveling) but apart from that I’m just fine.

        • Joe W.

65, here….feel 40…body is shot….memory O.K….blind in right eye and can’t see out of the left…hearing is fine but my patience is long gone….

          • Marjorie

            What is patience?

          • Orwellian_Dilemma

Patience is what they say you have when you’ve given up trying to change things. Trust me. You don’t want any.

          • Marjorie

Guess I don’t have it then…but my BS tolerance meter has reached an all-time low.

          • Orwellian_Dilemma

The indicator light on mine burned out from overuse some time ago.

          • Marjorie

You have an indicator light????? Must be the Chinese model.

      With a red crayon?

      • Clete Torres

        Only if you draw lines.

They might be blurry, but I’ll do my best!

            What you did there.

            I saw it.

“We wish you a blessed Rosh Hashanah. Of course, once the Holy Days are over we’ll be trying to push you into the sea.”

    • ceemack

Seriously, it would be wonderful if the new president wanted to dial down the hostility between the Iranian regime and the Jewish people, but it’s hard to imagine a guy like that being allowed to–I mean, being elected in Iran.

Like someone said below, color me skeptical.

  • Magnifico

Sounds like taqiyya to me. Surprised it took this long.

    • ceemack

Somebody should tell him that Taqiyya Tuesday was yesterday.

  • TroyGates

If it was originally tweeted in English, then it is a publicity stunt. Why wouldn’t he use native tongue if it is meant for the locals?

  • Kawaei

idk what to think of this since he still hasn’t cancelled the bomb

      I always have hope

      • nc

Some people can’t afford it. This doesn’t even rise to the level of “trust but verify.”

        IMO it’s a hack job.

        • AlmaAlma

Could be, but I hope not :)

          • nc

I admire your optimism, Alma. It’s just that it’s so hard to take this seriously after decades of constant “we will annililate Israel” propaganda.

It dropped so far, I am having a hard time finding it.
    I really hope this isn’t a joke.

    He won’t be long for this world if the Radical Ayatollahs and Parliament Members had their way….Hassan should do a Bashir al-Assad on ’em! Jawamax 8<{D}

Trying to keep Israel from taking sides in Syria, perhaps?

Wishing all Jews a blessed Rosh Hashanah.
Please refrain from bombing our nuclear facilities before we have adequate fissionable material to eradicate you with radioactive hellfire. Allah bless us and be merciful to us all.

  • NCRelite

this is part of the ‘we don’t hate Jews we just want to destroy Israel’ narrative

  • Stephen L. Hall

Dialog can begin with just a modicum of civility. It is a start. “Blessed are the peacemakers.”

Oh boy. The Ayatollah’s not gonna like that.

Paraphrased: “We still want you wiped off the map.”
    Cheeky, Mr. Hassan Rutabago.

Good thing Islamic leaders never read Sun Tzu or Machiavelli. I think we can stop worrying about the nukes now.

  • Danny Wheeler

Man… all sorts of responses, good and bad alike.

So the original tweet wasn’t from the President. Then the foreign minister chimes in with another one but it’s still not much use and the whole world falls over themselves to think there is something moderate going on.

Bullshit. More details here at Times of Israel :
