When you’ve lost Sulu … George Takei photo-slams Obama, NSA surveillance

Ha! “Star Trek” co-star George Takei took to Twitter to blast President Obama and the NSA surveillance scandal. The tweet has been made a favorite nearly 100 times. Also a favorite? Takei’s Facebook page in general:

Here is a sample:

Embrace the nerd!

As for his NSA photo-slam, Twitter users were loving it:

Heh. Takei, who married his partner in 2008, is a same-sex marriage supporter and endorsed President Obama.

To make it even better, try reading his tweet this way:

Glorious.

Mr Sulu: lay in a course toward impeachment. Warp speed, if you please.

    • Sir_Ronald

Impeachment = AWESOME! Obama is destroying the country!

      Land of the FREE ?

      .

Spying on you spying on me,
This is no longer the ‘land of the free’.
Tapping our phones and e-mail too,
This is not America that we knew.

The 4th Amendment is a thing of the past,
The 9th and 10th thrown in the trash.
Drones in the sky watching what we do,
No longer FREEDOM for me and you.

      The NSA overstepping their bounds,
They are now going after rodeo clowns.
Freedom of speech almost dead we see,
All due to the tyranny of King Obammee !

The oath they took when sworn in,
Is the same when I went to Vietnam.
It means to the tyrants we see,
That they are liars in the first degree.

A land of sheep have we become?
The rule of law should be number one.
This old vet will die FREE,
And not upon a bended knee!

The 2nd Amendment is there you see,
To keep America the ‘land of the free’ !
Our founders were bright we all see,
They knew tyranny was going to be.

Are we going to set idly by,
And watch the great America die?
I am but one and we will see,
If America continues to be the ‘land of the free !

Questioning Obama on one thing hardly means Takei is turning on Obama. Though I do wonder how he enjoys paying all those taxes in California. I mean even Bill Maher admitted he wasn’t happy paying over 60 % of his income.

    • hydrangea1

These leftists will criticize Obama, but if he was up for re-election, they’d vote for him again in a heartbeat. Don’t doubt it! They get just a ‘teeny-bit’ annoyed with him but it really means nothing, he’s still their messiah!

    • MadMoto

“You took my millions and left me with millions and regulatory favor” boo hoo lefties crime me a river. The fact is that taxes hurt the “non” millionaire club more than anyone else. If you have an extra million out of your dozens, you probably don’t care much. If you are being asked to pay thousands out of your thousands, well, that WILL sting a bit more. Lefties are out of touch.

What’s that about? Servers don’t need water. It is believed that the Utah Data Center contains more square footage than the Pentagon (over 1,000,000 sq ft) and has plans to be capable of capturing every electronic communication on earth. If only the communications networks would just say “NO” to snooping.

      • Richard Helm

The cooling systems for larger computer systems does.

      • Barn Cat

They’d threaten to kill their families. I’m sure that’s happened more than once.

      • Nick

Servers do need water. They produce heat, and heat requires cooling. Most cooling takes place using cooling towers. So yes, they will use a lot. Data center heat rejection is a big issue.

        • drofmanythings

Thanks for providing me with my daily need for new information. I wonder about the quantity and power of that many servers to process trillions of actual content, not just phone numbers or destinaions/originations. An impressive achievement but ripe for widespread abuse by dishonorable leaders, which we now know who they are.

          • RoyBaty

The dishonorable leaders are in charge right now but it is a big leap to say that former military and other patriots working in our intel community are down with abuse. Its not the IRS.

          • drofmanythings

I did not mean to incriminate anyone in the NSA or the military. Most of them are worried patriots, I assume. We have already found out that top people at CIA and NSA fibbed about the data and how it’s used. Rabid progressives masquerading as President, Attoney General, an on down have high potential for abuse. This administration has expanded executive power to the max, using federal agencies and selected bureaucrats as a criminal enterprise to advance their agenda. Lois Lerner is a poster child for that…

          • RoyBaty

General Alexander did not lie, there is no spying but there is metadata collection. He has to balance national security and is an honorable truthful patriot.

          • Nick

Also, its incredibly vulnerable to “outside forces”. I worked in assessing facilities for vulnerabilities, and I have no idea how they could have incompetently chosen this location for a server farm, that’s buried in the earth, where the heat has no where to go. Cut off the water, shut it down. Simplest vulnerability analysis I ever did!

        • colonialmarine

The actual storage architectures (whether “kinetic” hard drives, newer SSD’s or quite possibly optical/molecular storage tech), produce only a fraction of the overall thermal load in this, or any other data facility.

The collection and storage of 5 yetabytes of data (for comparative purposes only, 15 terabytes dedicated to each 330 million citizens) would not produce the thermal profile evidenced by this and it’s two yet undisclosed “black” sister sites/clouds. (Like the Feds are gonna back this sh*t up on Carbonite™?)

The massive cooling systems are, as observed by others in this thread, required by the farms of “servers”, each with it’s own array of semiconductive (read HOT!!!) processors and chipsets required by the comparatively simple algorithms that continually listen, sieve, collate and hyper-reference a once free Nation’s every action, memory and “stream of conciousness”. (i.e. The primary value of “metadata” is to yield near real time “meta targeting”, where “micro-targeting” is little more than lagniappe to the Thought Police.)

For those who might contend that “I’ve done nothing wrong so I don’t care”, these “persons” might do well to consider that in a police state, everyone is a criminal, where prosecution and eventual dispension/diposal of your particular sentence rests solely with the State at it’s need or the convenience of it’s functionaries.

          • Nick

What, you think its just a big SSD? Pffttththpp! As Bill the Cat used to say. You analyze data where you have it, so each of these storage drives (SSDs are your assumption, by the way, but trust the feds to use the most expensive option) will have some minimal controllers associated with them, as well as probably some processors per array. Other facilities aren’t buried underground where there is no where for heat to go. Sure, you could put a pure “storage” facility somewhere outside, in a big two story building that covers a lot of landscape, but at least it will have natural convection (if its cool).

In this case, Its not just a big file cabinet that has no heat generation…

            http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/storage-clinic-119/how-hot-does-ssd-heat-up-usually-3675224.html

            I quote:

HDD heat is due to a motor spinning the spindle… SSD is heat create from electrical signals running through individual NAND chips…

The power consumption and heat scales up with the density and amount of chip involved.. i.e. A write 256GB SSD can be as hot or not even hotter than a normal HDD but the biggest difference is this because so much faster the write time is a huge amount shorter. Therefore the thermal output will be significantly reduced… I worked with industrial grade SSD in server farms before… those large scale industrial SLC SSD mounted in racks are hotter than most server grade HDD cost like 50X more but they are blazing fast.

So is not true that SSD is always cooler but for 100% of all consumer grade implementation it is cooler. SSDs dont make sound so whats not to love… For servers the aircon blowers and cooling fans are massive noise makers but no one goes into the server room unless hell breaks loose…”

          • colonialmarine

(you wrote) “…but no one goes into the server room unless hell breaks loose.”, perhaps that might be better stated as “no one wants to go into the server room, especially after all HALON breaks loose…”

As for the rest of your tirade, Amb. Duke Raoul’s recently departed doppelganger might have offered the following good counsel. “Good heavens man, if you’re going to reply to a comment, at least let your meth buzz taper, then read the entire post using that handy “see more” feature provide by the good people at Disqus. Then, if you still must, go ahead and launch yourself on a well meaning but essentially tangential rant.”

In other words, more Zonker Harris, less Steve Dallas.

As for the Bloom County reference, I see your Bill the Cat and raise you two X-15 Cruise Basselopes.

          • Nick

Sure Marine Colonel. I bet you have all sorts of computer thingie knowledge garnered while traveling the world, meeting strange new people, and killing them. Not that I mind that. Lots of enemies out there need some reconnection with the Big Guy. I had to learn my computer work the hard way, getting paid the little bucks and hearing managers whine.

By the way, I was quoting someone else (which is why I gave the link – I found it an amusing answer). It took me all of 3 seconds to find that, and I could find 100 more like it. Even if they only use 66% at peak load and 10% at idle, they still generate heat. Heat has to be eliminated, one way or another, or it kills machines. So stop pretending you know more than you do.

          • Nick

It is taking celebrities, media experts, and mere liberals a long time to figure out that Obama is a cat of different stripes than they thought of and hoped for. Sold as a moderate, he is genuinely a man who wants to transform us all…but into what? He is an ideological radical who has used federal agencies as a criminal enterprise in order to neutralize his opponents an usher in a permanent political class of progressives who want nothing better to control all aspects of American life. Nothing is too trivial to avoid the regulatory grips of the federal bureaucracy, which itself is turning into an elite class not unlike in socialist nations. Obama cares not about the Constitution or personal liberties, other than figuring out ways to overcome them. The NSA was to be the premier weapon of control, but will we sit idly by and let people be destroyed for the right to speak out and disagree with Dear Leader? George, you and a million others must spread the word.

When you are a country that has many “low info” voters and people on the dole – this is what you get in a nutshell ……the lure of “free stuff” and a Gov’t that “will take care of you” entices many unfortunately …..and NOTHING ever good comes out of that mentality EVER.

    • Me

“I’ve noticed that liberals only care when liberals are attacked.” That’s what makes them both stupid and dangerous to themselves as well as others. If a person screws over a friend and not you; just wait, it will happen to you too; stay away from this type of person.

      • krusatyr

Leftists are truly that selfish, it’s all about their special rights, special set asides for them and stripping private property and success from others to achieve equal outcomes, “social justice”. But jump back if you or Uncle Sugar gets between them and their candy.

Pain is the best teacher. Thugs, hustlers, cheats and one murderer (shotgun missed only cause I anticipated in time) grew my radar for socio-psychopaths to where I warned family and friends about obama in 2007. Course they said I was paranoid. Not now.

    • right_on

Liberals care when they think the “authorities” are snooping on them. What ever happened to their, “If you’ve got nothing to hide, it won’t effect you.” Yeah, maybe some of them (the politicians) DO have something to hide? This is the same mentality that fights Voter ID proposals.

      • bonnieblue2A

Terminology matters. Statists are the antithesis of classical liberalism.

    • blueangel69

Like all the other stale communist regimes. Disagree with the party and guess what? You’re mentally defective! Brilliant, just brilliant. C’mon, America! We know better than this.

  • Dracovert

If you really want to make a difference, use proper terminology. Obama is a clinical psychopath. See Dr. Robert Hare’s Psychopathy Check List – Revised (PCL-R).

    • drofmanythings

To be clinically correct, Obama has strong characteristics of a pathological Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and enduring set of traits and behaviors that are constantly on display. He seeks affirmation as an exalted person and imbues himself with special knowledge and insight to be so glorified. The initial glow has finally worn off as new layers of citizens are turning against him. Individuals with this personality have inability for empathy since the self is of such disproportionate concern, moment to moment. Playing 15 games of spades with gay former man-servant Reggie Love during the bin Laden takedown could be the classic detachment of a man with bent feelings.

W erected the national security state that Obama is abusing. You praised Bush for the exact same things for which you despise Obama. I ceased being a Republican in 2007 because of douchebaggery like that. It’s ok if an R does it, but if a D does it cry like a baby. Both parties are actually a single party. You might have a small contingent of good people like Justin Amash, Rand Paul, Mike Lee and Ted Cruz (I can’t think of a good Democrat since Larry McDonald), but the main parties are largely BS. I can prove your blind allegiance to the GOP. If Christie is the R nominee and Hillary is the D nominee, you will vote for Christie.

        • jojopittsburgh

Christie will not be the nominee, he supported first Romney, then Obama.

Impeach the entire party they call themselves Socialist Democrats while amongst themselves. We just have to listen to what they say and they will convict themselves. No one wanted to believe what they were saying was true the red flags were ignored by the media so it went unchecked. You have to remember that we are dealing with the masters of brainwashing and mind control so take nothing they say for granted everything is carefully thought out with cause and effect in mind to advance their goal little by little. When one falls the others will pull harder so we must do it all at once. There is no other way.

Biden was cut from the same cloth so while Biden may be a fool he’s not all together evil. If Biden stepped in that would shut the circus down all the clown would have to regroup and that would be a good thing.

Bush had integrity, unlike the current Liar in Chief.

Bush would never be as abusive as the faux POTUS that is currently decimating all that is good in America.

      • Dmacwired

Bush should have considered what a lot of us where thinking when he proposed the Patriot act and Homeland security. That once the systems and organization are in the hands of the other party that’s when all hell will break loose.

      This tired nonsense again.

Bush’s surveillance program targeted overseas targets and their contacts in the US – only ONE leg of the comm in the US. 0bama targets purely domestic comm – BOTH legs in the US.

    • jojopittsburgh

Obama manages to take all government programs and make them bigger, more invasive and more burdensome. Examples: Obamaphones, foodstamps, and the NSA surveillance. He cannot be trusted, and now we’ll never unwind the mess he’s made, so we need to get rid of any program he touched and start over. We’ll have to use lots of disinfectant when we finally clear the rats out, and may be 15 years from now, thanks to Hillary and stupid voters.

  • Ron E. Roberts

Where in the tweet are y’all inferring Obama’s “lost” Takei? I’m not seeing it. However, a LITTLE perspective, dear’foaming at the mouth, righties…’

Takei spent some of his youth in a World War II internment camp as a young Japanese-American. Methinks HE, above most, knows about “government over-reach” in the name of “national defense.”

    • Malcolm Reynolds

He prolly doesn’t recognize that he was put there by the ‘foaming at the mouth lefties’ like FDR and Woodrow Wilson, the two highest rated and most tyrannical progressives in the stable.

  • eeddggy

We have whiny Lefty troll that just came on to dislike every comment. Probably crying and sniveling as it does this rapid fire disliking. .

    • nc

      • eeddggy

  • Arlie Collins

George Takei is now officially a racist clown for threatening Obama. The Secret Service and the Justice Department need to investigate Takei for making a threat against the president.

  • Dion

Here’s a quick lesson on the NSA surveillance: they don’t
read everything because that would be impossible. They most likely have a
system that is like a firewall that examines each network packet for certain “dirty
words”. It is also possible to do this, not only with text but with audio. In
any case, what they probably do it flag the sessions with this interesting
traffic and analyze it further. So, unless you are discussing the plans for
criminal activity your privacy is intact.

    • mwayne09

and you’re most likely an idiot.

    • SkyePuppy

      Ahhh! Technology!
An old friend who got his degree in Russian History was recruited by the CIA fresh out of college, during the Cold War, to read Russian publications and look for “certain ‘dirty words.'” He quit after a month.
The advantage of the technology era is that the analysis doesn’t take lunch breaks, go home at night, or quit. The disadvantage is that it likely doesn’t recognize humor, satire, or criticism quite as well as real people would.

      • Dmacwired

If Google can work wonders with its search engine algorithms how much more will government computers be able to parse the minutia of every shred of data they collect and compile it into a data base where sophisticated and highly complex algorithms sort the data at billions of bytes per second?
Dion the moron would have us believe the government will be using a commodore 64.
        What a putz!

        • jojopittsburgh

I think Dion is using a commodore too. He is way behind when it comes to technology and it’s ability.

      • nadadhimmi

The lack of ability to recognize humor and satire is not a bug to Obama, it is a feature. Tin horn dictators like Obama CAN’T TOLERATE any form of humor, satire or irony. See the rodeo clown as your example. The clown DARED to mock “He whose name shall not be spoken other than in worship”. He’s ostracized now for life. Stalinism revived!

    • eeddggy

Wow. The teachers pet from a Public Indoctrination school speaks.

    • M_Becker

Yeah? Well gee, what if the “dirty words” are “Tea Party”?

    • Dmacwired

      They most likely…What they probably do…so unless….

His Obamaness makes unequivocal promises and he lies though his teeth when he does so but we should take comfort from your assurance?
ROTFLOF till my sides cry out for relief.

    • jojopittsburgh

Just like Obama does, you formed a paper tiger. Please find one human who ever said the NSA reads every letter. Let’s have them leave us an email each time they read an email “in error” then. The TSA at least leaves me little pink notes when they sniff my underwear at the airport. You are very naive if you believe they innocently and accidently looked into real American’s mail, not just the “megadata”.

      • Dmacwired

And in some cases they steal your camera anyway!

        • jojopittsburgh

Yes, the notes they leave aren’t exactly “personal”, not even as personal as the ones they pack with your shirt that says “Inspector No.13” . I’d love to find the TSA guy wearing my pearls.

    • Dion

Yes, it’s true that who ever is in power can adjust the content that is considered of interest and that can be more than just a little scary.
OBTW: I work in information assurance in the private sector with about 15 years experience, none of it government. But I know the technology and how it can be deployed.
I’ll be the last person to defend a tyrant; but I am not convinced we are there, though I am sure there are some who would disagree. But let’s disagree in an agreeable manner rather than slinging mud and calling names. Leave that to the politicians. The people (that’s us) should rise above that.

      • http://www.black-and-right.com/ IceColdTroll

        Coincidentally, here’s today’s “Sherman’s Lagoon”:

      • richard40

We cant be sure that the NSA info has been intentionally misused YET, unles them having this info in the first place is misuse, but given what happened at the IRS already, aren’t you just a bit worried.

    • wvobiwan

There is no way you can be assured of your statement on our privacy. NSA admits to breaking their own rules on that data’s use 1000s of times.

      • Dion

The shear volume of traffic would make it all but impossible to compromise the privacy of the average citizen.
But there are always the exceptions to the rule. In those cases a lawy suit against the NSA would be in order and the award should be quite a handsome sum.

        • http://www.black-and-right.com/ IceColdTroll

Except that any lawsuit would never get off the ground. If they didn’t just stake out a sovereign immunity exception, it would likely be disallowed on the grounds of national security. Andeven if you did get them into court, they would likely use that same national security as an immunity to testifying to anything significant.

        • Malcolm Reynolds

“The shear volume of traffic would make it all but impossible to compromise the privacy of the average citizen.”

Yea, I’m in IT too and I can tell without even knowing you that you absolutely SUCK at your job.

          http://reason.com/blog/2013/06/10/remember-that-time-the-nsa-listened-to-u

Yep, you’re stupid and you can suck my ‘lets disagree amicably and not call each other names.’

        • richard40

But of course since you dont know you have been spied on, and the whole program is shrounded in secrecy, it is a bit hard to file this lawsuit.

    • Dion

For those of you thinking that I am an Obama supporter, you are mistaken. I am at least as concerned about what he is capable of as I was of Clinton or W. Bush. And this surveillance has been going on at least since the administration of the latter.
If this sort of operation were ongoing in the year preceding 9/11, perhaps we might have been able to stop that attack from happening.

      • http://www.black-and-right.com/ IceColdTroll

The point isn’t how much they actually read. The point is that they’re doing it at all. I’m sorry, but your explanation at bottom is nothng more than a riff on the Gestapo’s “If you’ve done nothing wrong, you’ve nothing to fear.”

    • Malcolm Reynolds

Aside from the fact that you’re a slack jawed moron for citing ‘if you’ve got nothing to hide…’, if you can comprehend this, please cite why they would store all that data, flagged or not, then.

    • richard40

Given the IRS precedent, any bets on whether NSA dirty words include things like tea party, 9/12, patriot, constitution.

  • Dmacwired

Sulu will be asking Scotty to beam him up to where ever Scotty is now after the IRS tax audits hit Sulu’s mail box.

  • Leone

What can I say, George? You’ve done us all proud…You know, I never thought your private life was any of my business–it never changed my opinion of what a decent man you are….But I gladly welcome your statesmanship on these NSA abuses….This is a violation of the American Prime Directive—leave the people alone….Good on you, sir.

  • jojopittsburgh

See Obama, you can’t even please your base? And George is definitely one, bless his gay little heart.

  • Dmacwired

NSA snooping is the least of our worries. Once Obamacar is in full swing our personal information will be in the hands of the IRS and potentially navigators who have not had a background check – as if temptation won’t enter the minds of the most ethical..
Identity theft will be rampant when government employees use or sell our identities to who ever will give them $500. Our assets and our lives will be at risk and the government will not make us whole after their employees have ruined us.
I don’t like NSA snooping or what this government has demonstrated itself willing to do to people they don’t like. Now I’m looking down the double barrel of 12 gauge and it’s certain to go off eventually and this is beyond intolerable.

    • Suzyqpie

I suggest that the absence of a security fire wall is a feature not a bug. It sets up the identity theft entrepreneurs. Who then set up a Pigford size class action suit which splashes out millions to lawyers and The Base, who will be the ones signing up in the exchanges. A twofer of Dems fav constituents, lawyers and the base.

      • Dmacwired

If so Obama will have unleashed a rapid cancer that will destroy the upper and middle class leaving nothing but bones for the lawyers to pick at.
Our president is either an absolute fool or a malevolent evil. Either way he’s destroying this country at neck break speed.

    • Malcolm Reynolds

“NSA snooping is the least of our worries. Once Obamacar is in full swing our personal information will be in the hands of the IRS”

So, our info dangerous in one dept’s hands but not the other?

      • richard40

Not just the IRS. Have you heard about the obamacare “facilators” having access to everything in our medical records, when most of them will be recruited from ACORN community organizers, with no background check.

  • jojopittsburgh

George T should be worried. With all that Obama is “interested in” according to his abuse of the NSA, he probably is looking into George’s bedroom.

    • Dmacwired

And you know he’s got the photos!

  • Dmacwired

I knew he was a liar but at the beginning I listened to see if there was any truth to be had in Obama’s words.
After about six months into his first term I realized he lies all the time and then lies about the lies he told.
Now Obama validates the conclusion I came to after the first six months and with his latest assurances about the NSA and all the talk about security scandals being so much needless worry I am certain that we are all screwed.

  • Dmacwired

Are the Obama damage control folks paying some dolt a penny per down vote or is this fool just wasting his time?

  • descolada9
