The Left owns Twitter? Connected conservatives set Rush Limbaugh straight

Rush Limbaugh’s riff today on the future of the Washington Post and the slow death of the Left-leaning “dead tree media” was pretty much spot on, but four little words quickly interjected into the middle — “the Left owns Twitter” —have caused quite a stir among the true deed holders. (The Right Scoop has the audio.)

Limbaugh’s the undisputed king of the conservative airwaves, but his official Twitter account follows precisely zero people, and we’re guessing he’s not spent a lot of time on Twitter recently. Liberal journalists are routinely called out on their bias, hashtag campaigns like #Gosnell and #Benghazi have forced those topics into the public awareness and the headlines, and even the progressives at this year’s Netroots Nation conference conceded they have a lot of catching up to do to counter the “Michelle Malkin effect.” And don’t forget Sen. Ted Cruz collecting #StandWithRand tweets to read on the Senate floor in support of Sen. Rand Paul’s epic filibuster.

That’s not to say liberals don’t have a presence on Twitter: they’re essential in setting up epic conservative hashtag hijackings like #ActionAugust and #ObamacareIsWorking.

While I believe that the founders of Twitter may be leftists (but I do not care enough to look up), its the people who really own its contents.

A snake’s head cannot be in control if the body dies, as it dies along with it. Leftism cannot be maintained if people flock away from it.

The New Media is the single best way to contact instant information, what you want, and more people have a voice. Do not pay attention to the Old Media, as they have no true control over what goes on over the Internet. For without it, I may have never became a conservative, all due to the tripe that was shoved down my throat at school, and on TV.

That’s what I was thinking: Rush may have meant that Twitter the corporation is owned by the left (which IIRC is correct), but the conservatives are WELL represented in @ and #

Pretty sure Obama is working tirelessly though to control all Internet communications…

  • Republicanvet

Not surprised. Rush seemed reluctant to get on Twitter. He does better on facebook.

    • Tea Party Liberal

      #Rush is too long winded for Twitter I’m thinking. #tcot #tlot #uniteRight #teaparty #uppusa #GOP

  • ceemack

Conservatives on Twitter are like the U.S. Army. We fight outnumbered and win.

    • DaMello

Even from Twitter Gulag we fight! I’ve been there a few times…

  • Dan Phillips

    Adam Baldwin owns Twitter.

    Well, and I.

    • cscape

      don’t forget James Woods

      • I Am Breitbart

And the obvious one Nick Searcy! He kills me!!!

  • liberalssuck

I love Rush, but he maybe off on this one!

I’d love to follow Rush on twitter but he rarely posts to his account

Ah well, there’s PLENTY of other righties famous and not saying awesome things

  • nickdqwk

Memo to El Rushbo, Twitter does have a moderator, does not have a call screener, your message is, if relevant, or humorous, is immediate, and your not on hold for 3 hours. That said, I love your show I always agree with you and I voted for Bush. (one of the best parodies ever, for seminar callers.)

  • Perfect Circles

conservative thoughts are too brilliant to be condensed into 140 characters which is why I only write them in 100,000 word manifestos that i bury in my backyard because this liberal country doesn’t deserve them

    • Ben Bollman

Very true, considering I have found better ideas from a Mad Libs that a Ritalin-deprived 4th grader filled out than what is currently in the Democrat Party platform.

You’re also not fooling me 😉

  • Hayekguy

I admit even times I’ve disagreed I’m able to accept what he says. This is not a case of that. Conservatives, libertarians and liberty lovers do very well on twitter. True the left has a strong presence too, but it’s at least about 50-50 divide between right and left.

  • stuckinIL4now

Maybe Rush was really saying it’s the sad backward GOP RINO eliterates who don’t know or own Twitter.

    • Guest

Maybe you should become literate before you call others illiterate.

      • wdfmap76

“Eliterate” is a portmanteau of “elite” and “illiterate.” It refers to those who are uninformed but think they’re better than everyone else.

        • Joe Dokes

A list so big you have to frame it in terms of who ISN’T on it.

      • stuckinIL4now

I wasn’t calling them “illiterate”–I was playing on the word “elite” and mocking the RINO “elites” though I guess someone who just insults others anonymously wouldn’t have an inclination toward the creativity that can be used with thought and language. But that’s hit’n’run libturds for ya’. I’ll make sure to put quotes around my wordplay from now on for imagination-challenged lefties like you.

        • Marjorie

          I thought it was clever.

  • SRVDisciple

Dear Rush, Sharknado owns twitter. Get used to it.

    • Jeremy

      You know it

  • brando

    Not yet, at least

  • cscape

There’s a lot El Rushbo doesn’t know….. It is maddening – i believe he “phones in” an awful lot, leaving much of the grub work to his staff (certainly since he remarried)

    • Jon

If it was called iTwitter and marketed by Apple, Rush would have mastered it by now.

  • Maxx

I was listening to Rush at the moment those words was spoken today. I took it as Twitter is primarily a medium for liberals to vent their nonsense and that while conservative influence is growing in social media, it still hasn’t reached the participatory level of liberals.

I agree with him however, It’s changing and changing fast…thanks to people like Michelle and, whose success, in no small part, is due to the constant vomiting of ignorance and prejudice that liberals post daily on Twitter which in turn, are highlighted here.

  • narciso
  • Ntr

It was conservatives and right-leaning libertarians who adopted twitter as a platform for expressing political views and ‘advertising’ political blog posts early on. This was (in 2007) while backward-looking liberals were still stuck on Myspace posting their drivel and were just beginning the transition over to Facebook. Myself, i’ve been using Twitter since late 2007.

  • Ben Bollman

This is nothing new. If you listen to Rush regularly he often states why he doesn’t like Twitter or other social media and although I personally believe he is wrong he does make some good points. He mainly doesn’t like social networks because it makes people famous for basically nothing, they have done nothing to earn that fame. They don’t work hard, hone their talents, and get recognized for it but instead do something stupid or say something sarcastic on a social website then get ‘likes’ and ‘retweets’ for instant gratification. Honestly, I agree with him on that but it also has its advantages. He is missing out on a chance to engage people and spread his message in a new medium. Personally, I hope he changes his mind and becomes more involved.

    • thetreyman

he has also said that he wants people going to the radio show to get his product, not social media. that’s how he makes his money.

      • Ben Bollman

Which is understandable since he is running a business and wants total control over how his product is marketed but then again he could use social media to push his product. Honestly though, I think he has real disdain for the social network medium and the ‘look at me’ culture it has spawned as he has said so himself. I don’t think it is something he is doing for money(because really he could make more money with it), he genuinely thinks it is causing cultural rot.

        • stuckinIL4now

Yeah, Rush could take lotsa 140(or-less)-character shots and really get the libturds riled up, eh?

  • Laraine Fox

Rally all the troops Rush— get us all on twitter

  • Sargonarhes

The left certainly owns Yahoo, that’s for sure. Read a story on Yahoo talking about some bell in Austrian with Nazi connections from WWII. But you can’t type in Nazi on Yahoo, they censor that word. Have to call them National Socialists

  • Love of Country

    Modern Comments @moderncomments

Completely disagree w/ Limbaugh. Left does not own Twitter. Has he seen our hash tag hijacks?
As someone who has never seen a Twitter account, could anyone explain to me what Modern Comments was getting at by saying “has he seen our hash tag hijacks?” because I don’t know what that means or why it is significant.
    Thanks in advance!

hashtag = a topic of conversation on twitter; so named because it is preceded by a # character. A hashtag without spaces becomes a clickable link you can refer back to easily without having to retype it in the search box. A hashtag with a lot of replies to it is said to be trending.” Popular trending hashtags for instance are #Benghazi, #DefundObamacare, and #TCOT which means “Top Conservatives On Twitter” but really it’s just a place for righties to give each other heads-up…it gets a lot of lefty trolls though

A hashtag hijack is when conservatives flood a trending (or not) topic that was started by the left: Twitchy here is great about announcing when our side has hijacked a twitter topic; personally it makes my day when that happens. :) Just search for “hijack” here in the search box on Twitchy and you’ll see examples of us throwing the left’s crap back at them (and in 140 characters or less too). A “hashtag hijack” is probably not important in the grand scheme of the universe, unless you’re offline surrounded by lefties and need to see that there indeed ARE a LOT of other Patriots who share your “Love of Country”

Hope this explanation made sense. I use twitter and I think even I’m confused now 😉 Twitter’s kinda hard to explain but it’s pretty easy to use

  • CDUB

I for one, will never set Rush Limbaugh straight, on anything, ever. Rush is right, 99.7% of the time, proven….

So he threw out 1 comment, in perhaps a slight error. The man talks for 3 hours a day and this is what is nit-picked on?

How about the so called nightly news led with the ARod scandal and told us nothing, nothing, about the ‘so called’ largest terror threat since 9/11? Which Barry, our vacation-er in Chief is mum on?

Focus people, focus…….. Oh, and immigration is being agreed to by RINOs and Mike Lee is being called nuts for spearheading the effort to defund Obamcare, in a last ditch effort to save our country, that no one is paying attention too.

If my above comments had half the press as Rush’s one little comment did, maybe we could save our country.

  • G21

Hussein Obama is a delusional marxist.

  • Markward

2 words for you Rush: Hashtag Hijack. Libs set them up, we go to party.

  • Jerry Janowski

If Rush thinks the Left is winning on Twitter, he should ask his brother @DavidLimbaugh – one of the best “Twitterer’s” out there!!

  • James Rose

Rush, we understand how busy you are and don’t have the time to spend on Twitter but some time on Twitchy will help you. Twitchy condenses but will give you a great heads up on things. Just so you know we won’t hold you lack of Twitter knowledge against you.

  • Rulz

    Mr. Limbaugh, meet Twitchy.

    Hear you tomorrow!

  • Paul

I agree that ingesting ‘news’ exclusively as it is ‘produced’ by big corporations is not good, but at the same time I can’t get my head around the idea of a ‘tweet’ as a medium for conveying any serious ideas. the brevity is it’s downfall… heck, blog posts like this are too short for any serious conveyance of thought in many cases. Perhaps I’m obtuse.

  • dunst43

Rush is right yet again. Liberals can get their thoughts out in 140 characters because that’s all they need. Conservatives need more space to confront retards whose only argument is, “Bush lied. People died.” Twitter is leftist turf.

    • 24601

This is exactly what happens — conservative ideas need some development because we’ve been neglecting education on important principles for a few generations now.

You can’t accomplish it in 140 characters. If you try, it gets twisted around or you end up blocked.

Does this sound familiar? “I’m not against immigration but…..” or “I’m not saying everyone acts like this but . . .. .” Those phrases have to be included in any attempt to address racial and immigration problems. Otherwise it comes off as “Yeah, EFF those guys”.

  • Greg

What is this “Twitter” thing you speak of?

    • Jill

Twitchy, alone, is enough to make me give Twitter a pass. In my line of work, I am confronted with an abundance of ignorance. Seeing an amalgamation of idiocy in the evenings doesn’t sound like good entertainment. :)

  • Doyce Dees

Rush does not use Twitter. Get off his back. Instead of slamming him
you should be inviting him. That’s the problem with you people – you
don’t know what to do. The Dems and Libs know what to do. And they
will crucify Limbaugh for his ignorance. Instead of slamming Limbaugh
you should be educating him. This is why I have no hope for my country – the Right is dominated by clueless, “offended” people. Quit being Liberals. Rush needs help, help him.

  • Defend The Constitution

While those who understand freedom recognize that democratic methods tend to be aligned with liberty, those obsessed with their own selfish interests realize that democratic methods are susceptible to hijacking.

  • upsidetrader

If you look at the “suggested” or “who to follow” suggestions by Twitter its : Slate, AP, CNN, MSNBC, NBC, Huff Post etc….he’s got a point from that standpoint

    • precursor

Yep he does….I am on twitter and there are far more left wing zealots than conservatives. And if you “follow” to many….you get suspended.

    • stuckinIL4now

Those suggestions are for the low cognition low infObamabots who wouldn’t know who to follow otherwise.

  • spepper

He might wanna ask his own brother David Limbaugh about that first. David’s a regular tweeter.

  • harkin

“If you look at the “suggested” or “who to follow” suggestions by Twitter its : Slate, AP, CNN, MSNBC, NBC, Huff Post etc….”

The small rightward contingent on twitter bristles at Rush while the big picture shows the lemmings getting their marching orders from their Sgt Schultz media lords.

    • BoltUp

Yep, all depends on what you do on Twitter – I never have any of those above listed as suggested follows…

  • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

    And he should know damn well that when a Liberal posts their usual spew on Twitter, we Conservatives let ’em have it! But at least if Rush made a mistake, he’s willing to admit it… Jawamax 8<{D}

  • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

    And he should know damn well that when a Liberal posts their usual spew on Twitter, we Conservatives let ’em have it! But at least if Rush made a mistake, he’s willing to admit it… Jawamax 8<{D}

  • Shawn Fifield

I admit it, I am very new to Twitter but in my limited experience, the liberals own it.

I say this because the few times I have responded to hate filled vile spewing people, it seems I get blocked somehow and they can still comment to me.

I am not as unhappy with twitter as I am with FB but I think it is easier to find like minded people on Twitter so I think it works a bit better, but I do not doubt for a moment that liberals control Twitter, just like they do with what seems like every other single social network does.

Should Conservatives get to far out of their place, I have no doubt Twitter will shut it down quicker than a blink.

And as others have said, my suggestions are almost all progressive/ liberal sites. Not sure why as I do not follow a single one. Also, I can not begin to understand why but it seems a few people who have started following me are very sports interested and I am not a big sporting fan and have never even twitted nor re twitted a single thing about sports…. I am thinking they have made a mistake.LOL

Since liberty cannot guarantee satisfaction, some people view the challenge of making their own way as more of a strain than an opportunity.
