Lena Dunham warns New Yorkers: ‘Gentrification will f**k our s**t up’

Scott Stringer seemed to have an easy path to the job of New York City comptroller until a certain Eliot Spitzer decided to jump into the race and steal the limelight. How does one fight back against that sort of name recognition, regardless of how it came about? Bring out the secret weapon: “Girls” creator and star Lena Dunham.

Comptroller races don’t usually draw this sort of celebrity star power — what’s on Dunham’s mind? She’s apparently out to save gritty New York from the scourge of gentrification.

Europeans, man.

Thank goodness someone had the courage to say what everyone’s been thinking. But Lena Dunham?

That you do. Please, continue.

She speaks like the true philosopher of our time that she is… so much eloquence.

I know! Her use, command and imaginative artistry in the English language is pure poetry!

Oh, stop that. Her commercial for Obama last fall (you know, the one talking about her first time…voting) was totally classy.

      • CatHerder

Yeah, I was captivated by the cartoons on her arms. She needs to head on back to the carny sideshow with the rest of the freaks now.

Hey, Lena. Gentrification is not bad. It turns ghettos into livable spaces. Detroit needs it big time.

    • HannahJK

Yup, we didn’t invade or settle this country, we gentrified it!

Geez, my daughter’s decision to decline an expenses paid visit to Oberlin becomes clearer every day….

Lena Dun-ham – the other white meat.

  • tjp77

As a New Yorker, my head is literally spinning right now from the lethal combination of irony, hypocrisy and idiocy that this girl has managed to come up with.

Voice of a generation, ladies and gentlemen. The future is bright indeed.

    • Teddi

The future is so bright, I’m going to need sunglasses – oh wait…

..but if I have to look at Dunham, just poke my eyes out.

      • NRPax

Welding goggles if you’re forced to look at her should work.

        • Teddi

          ..thanks for the option :o)

Oh, she so deserves what’s coming in 2014, when the next mayor of New York (unless it’s Lhota) guts the police reforms Giuliani put in and Bloomberg kept in place over the past 20 years.

The problem is Dunham is now wealthy enough to fall into that class of NYC liberal who loved the 1966-93 period of urban decay. They saw it as some realistic form of street theater, mainly because they had the money to live in secure buildings in the safer areas of Manhattan (or Brooklyn Heights, if you were Norman Mailer), and also never had to deal with the broken down, graffit-riddled subways, because they took cabs, limos or their own personal vehicles everywhere. But her hispster fans living in those same gentrified areas (adjacent to some housing projects that were far more dangerous before the 1994 reforms) are going to be the ones paying the price 2-3 years from now.

      • tjp77

        Yep, exactly.

She’s way too young to actually wrap her head around what New York was really like before it was stricken with the evil curse of gentrification. Her only references are nostalgic black and white photos of young Madonna and Basquiat strolling through the East Village and rose-colored stories about CBGB and Paradise Garage and how artists used to be able to get full-floor lofts in Soho for $250 a month. Hell, even I have a touch of nostalgia when I look back on it that way.

But the undeniable reality is that the entire rest of the city paid a HUGE price for the bohemian indulgence of a wealthy and/or otherwise privileged few. Neighborhoods that are vibrant, safe and thriving today were practically war zones after 6pm. Murder, rape and assault was a fact of life. It was not the urban utopia that people like Dunham like to imagine.

And as you mentioned, wealthy liberals like Dunham will be well insulated from those realities should they ever make a comeback.

  • Guest

Who is this vulgar person? She actually said that at a campaign event?

  • right_on

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw Dunham’s picture, was, “How now, brown cow?” Don’t ask me why…I don’t know.
When did she get popular with the liberal crowd? At a bar’s last call, or did she do a raunchy porn? Anyway, she’s a great fit with the company she keeps..

    • trixiewoobeans

It was her television campaign ad for Obama, likening voting to your “first time”, and how you want to do it with the right guy. And some show she does?

      • Damien Johnson

That was how I heard of her a couple months ago. I guess I must REALLY had not been watching tv to have seen that ad but I heard of it through discovering (and becoming a fan of) Token Libertarian Girl. She tore that ass up, big time. She parodied the crap out of that Lena commercial.

        • MNWoman

That commercial was the first I heard of her too. I may have to look up the parody you mentioned, but Stephen Crowder did a parody as well.

          • Damien Johnson

please do! Token Libertarian Girl (Julie Borowski) is AWESOME. I dug the fact that she would go in on both Obama and Romney. I’ll look up the Stephen Crowder one too. I’m not sure I agreed with his Mohammed video ideologically, but it WAS funny.

  • BoscoBolt

Looks like Lena’s sex change process is almost complete – she’s looking more like a dude every day.

  • Chad Edwards

Welcome to Williamsburg. LOL. Try gentrifying the South Bronx, you scag

  • right_on

Maybe Dunham is right…decay IS better than gentrification. We can use Detroit as the model.
Or, since it’s Aug 6th, we would rather use modern-day Hiroshima as a model of gentrification, instead. Look what investments did to a city completely destroyed by an atomic weapon. Stark comparison.

    • HWarrior13

Mixing current events with historical references…I like what you did there.

  • http://www.vatican.va/ Rulz

Nothing like progressives dropping the f-bomb to show how educated and enlightened they are.

    • floridavet

Great point. These are supposedly “intellectuals” who are well-educated, elite, snobbish, and often arrogant and narcissistic. They look down from their lofty perches on us “mortals,” telling us how we should live, what to eat, what kind of cars we should drive, all of this sage advice coming from their over-educated brains, yet they seem incapable of uttering even a single sentence without using the “F-bomb.” I remember one of my English teachers in grade school saying, “cursing is the crutch of the language cripple.” Oh, my kingdom for a better vocabulary!

  • CR

I don’t know where to begin with this.

What the freaking HECK is wrong with New York City voters that Lena Dunham speaking for you can help you to WIN a campaign?

Never mind the nonsense burbling out of her mouth. In a saner world, the Lena-Dunham endorsement should be pretty much the kiss of death for any politician.

In a saner world, people like Lena Dunham would, of course, not be asked to share their opinion on politics AT ALL. And her complete lack of self awareness is a good reason why that should be the case in this world too.

    • MNWoman

Don’t limit this to NYC voters. Remember her commercial she did in support of Obama? I knew nothing about her before that commercial and only slightly more since, but why anyone would take her seriously after that disturbing commercial is beyond me.

  • Spasmolytic

Lena Dunham is proof positive that even ugly women can have a Twitter account. You go girl!

  • HWarrior13

Using the words “f vck” and “chyt” in a political speech, is what makes her so totally “cool” !
I’ll never be that “cool”…. *sigh*

    • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

      I’m ANGRY about KING FINK OBAMA, Benghazi, the IRS, NSA, DOJ, EPA, etc. etc. scandals… THAT’S where I would use the bad language! Jawamax 8<{D}

  • Damien Johnson

Gentrification IS bad, but she’s definitely no person to look up to talking about this. And we’re both in our 20s, though I’m in my early 20s and she’s in her late 20s.

Speaking of which I had a nightmare last night that I was attracted to Lena Dunham. No joke. Ew.

well then again to put this in perspective, I went to sleep at about 4am, woke up at 5 something to realize I wasn’t in my spot, then got comfortable and went back to sleep until 11 so yeah.

    • HWarrior13

Damn you Damien…your nightmare just made me throw up in my mouth a little.
      Gotta go re-brush now! Arrggg

      • Damien Johnson

If I suffered, you all suffer! You all now see what I saw, Lena dunham lifting up her shirt, exposing slight underboob under a bra! Feel the terror! Mwahahaha.

You WILL know pain, terror and torture on this day!

        • HWarrior13

” If I suffered, you all suffer!” …How very Socialistic of you….spreading the suffering around are you?
Now you’re just being mean….”Good” night, sir !

          • Damien Johnson

LOL! Nah, no socialism here. Except for this whole sharing of pain and terror thing. 😛

          • HWarrior13

I said “Good night, sir” !
            (Too obvious, right ? lol)

          • objectivefactsmatter

But the essence of socialism is to spread pain, terror and suffering around equally. Except for the elites. Who need their health to keep things right “for the people.”

          • Damien Johnson

Good point. Socialism is pain through govt control.

        • Markward

          lol, nice.

          • Damien Johnson

Not for me. It was worse than even one of the standard nightmares that most people have that I had once-the one where all of your teeth fall out and you wake up thinking it really happened and you brush your teeth more times than needed for a while after that? Yeah, it was worse than that.

  • MNWoman

Well, this is slightly less bizarre than her commercial she did in support of Obama.

  • Jack Deth

Chunky Butt Chick needs a diversion after making such an ignorant ass out of herself.

Someone, tell her that there is a full, laid out buffet and chocolate fountain at Golden Corral!!!

  • Zefal

  • Cal

Wait, how is gentrification wrong? Presumably, such an area in question becomes more affluent, improving the economy, etc…

  • Zach Smith

So this person is what our society has become? Hard not to be pessimistic about our future.

  • John Smith

To call her a trashy skank would be a promotion to her. But then again, she is a model of Liberal women today, along with Sandra Fluke.

  • NRPax

So people moving into a blighted area, improving it and raising the quality of a neighborhood is a bad thing. I guess ghettos with needles and shell casings is a more “real” way to live?

    • Kevin Scott

You stole my comment! Dang you! ; )

      • NRPax

East Coast and I’m an early riser. Sorry. -:-)

But to listen to that statement, the people who complain about how much “nicer” an area is as if it’s a bad thing puzzles me.

    Obama’s mom’s maiden name = Stanley-Anne Dunham.
    Now here comes Lena Dunham.
    Coincidence? I think not.

Got it. Hipsters are the real menace to society. Completely agree. Kick their wanna-be hippies asses out. Sounds good to me. Let’s start with Dunham.

But her Messiah Obama said on Leno last night he wants to clean up vacant lots and build homes…..now she doesn’t want him to??

    Liberalism is a disease.

    • MarcusFenix

They’ll clean up lots and build homes…which then turn into welfare ghettos and Obama won’t understand why. He’ll only understand that he needs to help those people out again too.

  • FaithColeridge33

I have news for little Miss Brew Hog. Manhattan has been gentrified for at least two decades now. If it’s rough and tumble diversity she wants there’s still lots of that in the outer-boroughs. I think Joan Walsh is advertising on Craigslist for a roomie out in Queens.

Something tells me she’s not about to give up the safety and sanctuary of her economic segregation. The limousine liberal never lives in the messes they create.

    What an odd comment.

I go to NYC on occasion. My DH and daughter accompanied me on the last trip just a few weeks ago. It was their first time there, and they were excited to get there.

Then, they couldn’t wait to leave. This is a travel-centric family, and mine is VERY familiar with places like Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Milan, Rome, Paris, Stockholm, Amsterdam…..from multiple trips. So, no excuses as to how “big” NYC is — the place is filthy and stinks compared to even larger cities.

And don’t get me going on the airports.

As someone who grew up making frequent trips to NYC, loving the museums, theaters and restaurants, I was dismayed to find that my kids hate NYC too. Unfortunately, I now feel more like they do when we go. The first disillusionment was when we took them to the Planetarium and it looked much more pared down and uninteresting than when my parents took me there years ago. NYC is not “all that” anymore.

First of all, I’d like to endorse Kristin Davis, Eliot Spitzer’s former madam, for the job. Yes, Davis was picked up on a prescription drug rap and she is immoral but at least she is not a hypocrite like Spitzer and she doesn’t need Lena Dunham to boost her campaign.
(Seriously, NYC? This is the best you can do?)
As for Princess Lena, daughter of prominent artists and graduate of Brooklyn’s prestigious St. Ann’s, she’s one to talk. Do you think she’s living next door to Ukranians, Hasidic Jews, Dominicans, or poor blacks? Or is she rubbing elbows with Michelle Williams and Jenna Lyons among the fancy brownstones in Billyburg? Give me a break.
By the way, what’s wrong with an artist from Tampa? If you ask me we need artists from all over, not just NYC. Let them come from Charlotte, Des Moines, Kansas City, and Tuscon. It would be more interesting that way.

  • Paul Risenhoover

I thought gentrification was taking shit and unfucking it up.

    • Dana Van Roekel

Liberals like Lena want things to be f***ed up. The worse it is, the easier it is to sell the idea that we need to give up some liberty so that the government can “fix” the problem. Which of course makes a bigger problem, which of course…

So. . . . leave the ghettos to rot and what – build houses somewhere else? Is that her solution? Or does she want these places fixed up by generous landlords and then rented to everyone at a loss? I’m confused as to what she’s offering as an alternative solution.

  • gooseman

Who cares? New York is a cesspool that should be allowed to rot away, like Chicago, and Detroit… No real American is overly concerned with NYC unless it’s attacked by outsiders. We’re immune to their eating of their own.
