The New Republic doubles down on false claim that George Zimmerman racially profiled a 7-year-old black boy; Update: TNR issues new correction

No, he didn’t. But the false claim that George Zimmerman racially profiled a seven-year old back child has been floating around the Twittersphere for awhile now:

Earlier this month, The New Republic published an article in which a law professor repeated the falsehood:

… Zimmerman was an edgy basket case with a gun who had called 911 46 times in 15 months, once to report the suspicious activities of a seven year old black boy.

As Michelle N. Meyer notes, not all of those calls were to 911 (some were made to a non-emergency police number) and they were placed over a period of 7.5 years not 15 months. Most importantly,

Zimmerman’s call (to the non-emergency police number) regarding a seven-to-nine-year-old black boy was placed because Zimmerman was “concerned for [the] well being” of that child, who was walking unaccompanied on a busy street (see page 37).

From the police log:

concerned for well being

The New Republic revised the article in response to complaints. Here’s what it says now (the typo is in the original):

… Zimmerman was an edgy basket case with a gun who had called the polics 46 times in 15 months, once to report on a seven year old black boy.

Some “correction.”

Indeed. But what do you expect from the magazine that made Stephen Glass and Scott Thomas Beauchamp famous?

Update:

Well, would you look at that.

Here’s TNR’s new correction:

This article has been corrected. Zimmerman called various law enforcement officials 46 times, not just 911, as originally stated. He made the calls over an eight-year period, not over the course of 15 months, as originally stated. The original sentence also cited a call Zimmerman made about a seven-year-old boy; the clause has been removed as it implied that Zimmerman was reporting suspicious activity. It appears that Zimmerman made the call out of concern. We regret the errors.

That’s how the media brought out the Marissa Alexander case and convinced the public that was proof that Florida courts are racist. They omitted several details that showed WHY Marissa couldn’t claim stand your ground and got the 20 years in jail, and failed to mention that was due to a minimum sentencing law pertaining to what she did and not that “stand your ground doesn’t work when blacks use it” (when actually, it does).

isnt that the woman who walked out of the ex-boyfriends house to retrieve her gun then she walked back in and fired a warning shot at the ex while her children were in close proximity?

        • Damien Johnson

Nope. Cause those weren’t even her kids. They were the guy’s kids by another relationship.

Yeah. The media lied about SO MUCH with her. Whatever they didn’t lie about, they just left out.

It’s gotten to the point now that this happens so often that its safe to assume they run the false story intentionally knowing the truth then post the real story once the damage has been done so they can fein innocence through ignorance.

    • Jay Stevens

No. They post the true story once they have been called on the false story. This happens much too often to be an accident.

      “Once is an accident.
      Twice is a coincidence.

I’ve had a scintillating exchange with Ms. Leone, whose tweet is featured above. It consisted mostly of her calling me a cracker.

Edit. Now I’m a war criminal and a white devil. Also racist, based on evidence she won’t cite. Oh, and sexually frustrated too.

And now: “collectively, as a race, whites have been and are devils.”

    • Jay Stevens

Your avatar is a hand grenade. Of course, you are a war criminal.

      • VerminMcCann

Your response unjustifiably assumes both that that’s my hand and what I did with the grenade, no?

      • VerminMcCann

Or are you alleging that merely having a hand grenade as an avatar is a war crime?

I think it was sarcasm, but not sure.

The New Republic engages in “journalism”?

    Since when?

  • thomas moore

You know what is REALLY shitty about this whole thing? When you look at the facts you see Zimmerman was a guy who actually cared about his community and was trying to do something to make it better. Not that I’m mr. community myself, but I bet very few of the people trashing him volunteer for neighborhood watch or would call the police if they saw a young child walking alone and possibly in danger.

What is it those civil rights people keep harping about . . . disproportionate impact? Proportion of crimes committed to the percentage of the population? Come back when you have looked up those statistics to refute PatriotRG.

You really are a thick wit, but that’s nothing new.

  • PatriotRG

you really are dense – do you not see the stat that shows 57% of ALL murders are committed by black people who make 15% of the population ? Have you been munching paint chips in your mums basement ?

Taking away the very old and very young from that 15% you have actually 4% of the population (all black) between 16 to 45 killing 57% of ALL people in America!

  • Lisa Dean

    Proof?

  • MarcusFenix

I’m almost sure you garnered this statistic from theroot.com or other website…because i’ve read that story too.

They make the claim that whites are responsible for more violent crimes…except somehow don’t offer the explanation that when you have a part of the population that is numerically larger, they do tend to actually make up larger parts of other, related statistics.

Funny how that works…and it’s absolutely misleading. Nice try though.

  • Michael Anderson (WB)

According to the FBI (http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/tables/table-43) 49.7% of murders and non-negligent manslaughter is committed by blacks. Given the population sizes a black person is 6.2 times as likely to commit murder as a white person. A Native American is 1.7 times as likely to commit murder as a white person and an Asian is 0.27 times as likely to commit murder as a white person. Only blacks (in the US) are over 100 PPM.

The lesson is surround yourself with Asians.

  • rennyangel2

94% of black people are killed by black people. Gov. stats. FBI. But we ONLY hear about the rarer commission of a white crime ag. a black victim because that is the leftist RACIST NARRATIVE, SEE Duke Lacrosse team.

  • aztectrumpet

He is referring to just crime against white people. His stats may not mean much, but he does have somewhat of a point if the stats are correct. At best though, blacks are killing whites in slightly less in proportion with their numbers. Somehwat less than 17%(mexicans, asians, ect. included too) where they are 15% of pop.

  • PatriotRG

only one stat matters blacks are responsible for 57% of murders and they are only 15% of the population , blacks kill 10 times more than whites and Hispanics combines. That is horrendous do you not see that ? if you actually look at other crime in proportion to black population its horrendous. Stop cutting them slack – they need to face up to their problems.

except there was NO crime in the duke lacrosse team – well ok they hired a prostitute. it was a false rape claim. and of course sharpton was all over it. tawana brawley flashback.

  • rennyangel2

I was taking about fitting “the narrative” of the left’s (and MSM’s) that the US is a hopelessly and violently racist nation where whites openly and regularly perpetuate illegal assaults on blacks who are helpless and have no recourse, and regardless of the “crime,” the lacrosse team allegations fit the narrative, as did Brawley, as has “Zimmerman”–but the Zimmerman case only “fits” by ignoring Z.’s Peruvian blood (or as Toure on MSNBC called Z. a man whose mother is from Peruvia, showing the perfect ignorance the left displays regularly–57 states and all that), his amenable relations with blacks in his town, and his right to defend himself when having his head pounded on a sidewalk.
