Several GOP Senators drop off of letter demanding Obamacare be defunded

More than 60 Republicans have signed a letter urging House Speaker John Boehner to defund the implementation and enforcement of Obamacare in any appropriations bill brought to the house floor, Politico reports today.

Those Congressmen join 12 Senators who signed their names to a similar letter. As Twitchy reported, Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) has been leading the drive in the Senate to defund Obamacare, and Tuesday he tweeted a video suggesting he had 15 Senators on board to sign the letter. reported, though, that GOP leadership is actively working against Lee and urging legislators not to sign.

Sen. Marco Rubio declared in a tweet that the effort is gaining momentum, at least in the House. He also released an except of a floor speech giving five reasons to defund Obamacare.

The momentum among the public has never died down, however.

Marco, the knife is still in our backs. It’ll take a bit more than pandering to regain any sort of trust.

    • nc

I’m disappointed in him too over immigration. But we can still encourage him when he does the right thing. Note I said encourage, not trust.

      • Jeremy

Yeah I support Rubio on this.

      • MNWoman

Agreed. The immigration issue is too big to let slide, but he has been mostly solid otherwise on conservative issues.

At this point, only Lee and Cruz seem to be sure conservative votes. Even Rand Paul has some questionable votes.

        • Hayekguy

I rarely disagree with Rand Paul on the issues. And when I do it’s usually pretty minor stuff. Libertarianism ahoy!

    • Hayekguy

You can at least appreciate he’s doing something right.

  • OLLPOH ~ America

We have to have 41 Republican Senators Defund ObamaCare, so that we can Repeal.
All House of Representatives Had Better Not Do A Show Vote like the 38 Votes to Repeal, Now is The Time Defund this, Show Americans That You Do Have A Backbone!
If you don’t we know that you worked a deal with Obama and you could care less that the America is Gone and is Now a Marxist/Communist run State!

    • Hayekguy

Garner a minimum of 218 votes (Republicans), 41 in the Senate and we’re good so long they remain strong in saying no Obamacare funding.

  • Colin the Patriot

Is Cornyn being primaried? The Tea party should demand it. Wouldn’t it be great if Texas got 2 Ted Cruz’s!

    Louie Gohmert deserves a promotion.

    • Billie Slash

I could have predicted Cornyn would go RINO. He was never Tea Party material. But this is serious, and he can count on being primaried, from one Texan to another.

    • CatHerder

John Cornyn had better grow some stones and get with the program muy damn pronto. This Texan is not going to settle for a sellout, never again.

    • Hayekguy

      He’s become questionable of late.

  • William J. Miller

Should’ve known Cornyn would back out.

I’m a disappointed Texan (regarding him), but I will not give up.

  • Ben Bollman

Ayotte and Cornyn are particularly disturbing, they have bungled several chances to stand with conservatives. We need to let these people know that we will not stand for it and they have a lot to answer for when the primaries come.

    • CatHerder

I just sent him a WTF-O-Gram, waiting on his usual lame-assed reply. I’m tired of him telling us that he has to pick his battles. Bull! No more retreating, no surrender! Make the Dims take the ground if they want it that bad!

      • Ben Bollman

“Pick my battles” is code for “I think I have to kiss a Dems ass on one issue so he will vote with us on another issue” which is politics and not having principles. People vote for you to be conservative, not a politician. If we can’t count on them to be conservative then they need to leave.

    • Ironhawk86

I met Cornyn in person once and he was a typically phony caricature of a politician so what he’s doing doesn’t surprise me at all. I am however, very disappointed in Ayotte cause this was her chance to redeem herself after her amnesty vote.

      • Ben Bollman

I have a feeling that Rubio would be the same way. These people threw in with the Tea Party because it was trendy, not because they are anti-Washington conservatives.

  • RememberSekhmet

Someone needs to primary Cornyn’s butt. Like, now.

    • Clete Torres

And a lot more than Cornyn.

  • buckofama2010

That’s the end of cornyn’s career. It was bad enough he voted for cloture on gun ban. He at least voted against the bill itself. We on Texas need to primary him out. I will do whatever it takes to defeat him in the primaries

  • buckofama2010

Quit referring to GOP leadership. There is NO leadership but there are a bunch or liberal rino traitors like Rubio mcshame and gramnesty and the wacko snowe

The only ones worth keeping I. The senate are crus Paul and lee

  • Clete Torres

So he’s against 0bamacare but for illegal amnesty.
    Not even close, Marco.

  • copperpeony

Defunding Obamacare is only a dog and pony show to make us feel like they’re actually doing something. Only 12 Senators out of 41 signed the letter. What does that tell you? GOP is exactly that: “Grand OLD Party” They’re not Grand, the rhetoric is getting Old and they think they’re at a “life term” Party.

    • MKHouston

It is sad. No unity at all. Plus when it gets down to crunch time, they don’t know how get their message out to the people.

  • OLLPOH ~ America

Which side are they on ALEC/Right Mostly or ALICE/Left?
501C’s that wine and dine them?

  • The Penguin

    You are a disappointment Rubio…

  • GaryTheBrave

Why are they still using Continuing Resolutions?! WE NEED A REAL BUDGET!! Technically this is still the final Bush budget that they are continuing. ?? SMH ??

  • Codewizard

Let’s not forget that Marco Rubio will turn on us the minute he thinks John McCain will spank him for not being “sensitive” enough.

    Cantor is NO better.

  • TundraThunder

“GOP leadership is actively working against Lee and urging legislators not to sign.”

The GOP leadership needs to go! It’s time REAL conservatives run the GOP!

  • Adam Johnson

I saw in that list my Senator Deb Fischer but my other Senator Mike Johanns wasn’t mentioned. He used to be one of my heroes, but now………Still not the embarrassment to the Nebraska GOP that Hagel was.

  • TMZ2

If defunding #obamacare not important enough for #GOP to draw a line in the sand, what issue is?

Answer is #Amnesty or as they falsely call it…#immigration reform..

  • chetnapier

We will see them at the primaries

  • Hayekguy

If you voted for the Senate amnesty bill, you hold a chance of redemption by signing Mike Lee’s pledge to defunding Obamacare. Thank you Rubio, Cruz, Lee, Paul, Inhofe (my senator still waiting for Coburn to change his mind though), Grassley, Thune, Chiesa, Fischer, Risch, Vitter, Enzi. To those who pulled out, very disappointed. Ya’ll’s days are numbered if you don’t jump back in. That goes for anybody who hasn’t signed it at all (yet). We need a supportive base of 41 senators and 218 congressmen to say “NO!” loud and clear in funding Obamacare. Call, mail and email your elected officials. Tell them to sign this pledge and refuse to fund Obamacare one penny. And to those in the media who are taunting ya’ll, go up to those reporters and tell them to go fuck themselves.
