Southwest jet’s front wheels ‘collapse’ at LaGuardia [photos, Vine video]; Updated

Travelers at LaGuardia Airport in New York City are tweeting about a Southwest Airlines plane that lost its front wheels during the landing:

Vine video:

There are reports of injuries, we just don’t yet know to what extent:

Twitchy will monitor this story and bring you updates as the situation warrants.

Update: More recent reports indicate the plane’s wheels came off as it was preparing to pull into the gate, and not right upon landing, but we’ve read conflicting reports:

I am NOT flying anywhere, I swear!

As a one time heavy (multi-engine) jet and aircraft mechanic. It sounds like Southwest has a God Awful pre, post flight and periodic inspection and maintenance program(s)!

One of the countless reasons I do not fly commercial!!!

    • Macharius

Its not an accident, its just the trial run of the first kneeling airplane for you know…elderly customers. Also it will cost you all extra, because reasons.

      • Jack Deth

        Possibly, Macharius:

C-5s can “kneel” about 4 feet from main. nose gear level. For heavy loads, usually tracked or multi-wheeled to be loaded or off loaded front to back.

Nose gear on an airliner consists of two tires mounted on split wheels on ether side of a heavily reinforced and hydraulically retractable, steerable axle.

Nose gears don’t collapse unless someone hasn’t been paying attention. Hence a lousy, supposedly cost effective, yet dangerous maintenance program.

          Sarcasm is wasted on you.

            Hi, Joe:

            I understand sarcasm fine.

Every now and then I just like to wax nostalgic and sound like I know stuff.

Early reports have George Zimmerman helping passengers out of the plane….

    • The Penguin

Correction: Helping only the WHITE passengers out of the plane. Back to you Wolf…

I figure the next time I fly, I’m going to have Jeff Beck’s “I’m Going Down” on an endless loop because you’ve got to figure the odds of both occurring at exactly the same time have to be 50 trillion to one.

I sure picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.
