Motown Memory Lane: Obama ‘wasn’t going to let Detroit go bankrupt’

What a difference less than a year makes, huh?

Yeah … with his track record, he really ought to lay off the promises.

  • DV S1EOG

So, when can we expect Omni Consumer Products to enter the scene, buy Detroit and deploy RoboCop to clean up the streets?

    • RblDiver

Clean up the streets of Detroit? With the whole Zimmerman outrage, wouldn’t such an action be totally raaaaaaaaacist?

      • DV S1EOG

RoboCop was never racist. Most of the people he arrested, or killed, where white.

        • RblDiver

Pffft, as if that matters, all he has to do is arrest one black thug and suddenly he gets investigated by the IRS/NSA/DOJ/etc >.>

          • DV S1EOG

Actually, our luck, it would be the NSA/DOJ controlling him.

          • RblDiver

Hah, too true. …In that case, think we could lure him to Deer Trail, CO and say that he’s a drone? 😛

          • DV S1EOG

No, you would just have to wait a little bit, until he was furloughed.

          • Canadian in USA

            Or joins a union.

    • Brett Weir

I hear Jones wants ED209’s everywhere in the city by next year.

  • Pete Petretich

Why doesn’t the MSM point out this vast Presidential failure?

    • DV S1EOG

Because they are still to happy to have his genitals in their mouths.

    • MNWoman

Just for the sake of this twitchy post, what are some of his other failed promises? I can’t keep up.

      -decreasing unemployment
      -decreasing the debt
      -closing gitmo
      -shovel ready jobs

      • GreenEyedGal

Wasn’t he supposed to do something with the sea levels?

      • nc

        -most transparent administration EVAH

      • CR

“I’m pledging to cut the deficit by half by the end of my first term in office. I will be held accountable. If I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.”

      • Adela Wagner

Remember the AFFORDABLE health care act we were all gonna love so much, so damn much no one even NEEDED to read it, cause if they opened it, glitter would go everywhere. #YetAnotherFAIL

      • Pete Petretich

Equal pay for women? Not in his White House…

      • MNWoman

I will go through the budget page by page, line by line…

okay, maybe he did that and it was still a disaster.

      • TugboatPhil

Obamacare reducing annual premiums by $2500…oh yeah, and keeping your Doctor.

    • SR5150

“Why doesn’t the MSM point out this vast Presidential failure?”

Because when Oblamer made the comment, he was referring to the car industry – historically based in Detroit – not the city itself. They’re two totally different things. Derrrrrrrr. Idiot.

    • bullet2354

“I did not have sex with that women…!”

      wrong president.

  • oleg zeltser

Wait are you telling me Obama lied? He always keeps all his promises!

    • John W.

He didn’t lie. His refusal to let Detroit go bankrupt has merely “evolved”.

  • MNWoman

And he was going to reduce the national debt, get unemployment down, have the most transparent administration ever…

  • TroyGates

Romney looks better and better everyday, he predicted almost everything that has happened this year.

    • nc

Hope all you “sit homers” are satisfied.

      • TroyGates

Speak for yourself, I actively campaigned and voted for him.

        • nc

Sorry if you thought I was addressing you personally. Obviously by your comment I didn’t mean you. But a lot of commenters here have expressed this view, and it makes me crazy. Primary voting for your guy/gal is one thing, but in the general we have two choices, whether we like it or not.

          • MNWoman

Exactly. A lot of people said post-election that Romney didn’t win because he wasn’t “different enough” than Obama. I honestly don’t care if Romney was RINO leaning. He would still be the better choice at this point.

I still don’t think it would have mattered. After learning about the IRS targeting of conservative groups I think Obama and his campaign would have figured out a way to make sure he won the election.

          • nc

Sadly, I think you’re right. Especially with the help of the cheerleading, cover-up media. Brent Bozell has just written a book about this very subject.

          • Adela Wagner

Nothing makes me think Romney would ever be out to actively destroy this country. I think he was too meek, too “nice” and wanted to run a “clean” campaign. It is not unclean to tell the truth about your opponent, no matter how dirty THEY are. he would have been far better for numerous reasons, even if it was even to only buy time.

If I said what I really thought about Obama, well I’d probably have to keep an eye on the sky…or my driveway.

          • nc

Does it really matter, Adela? They think the worst of us anyway.

          • Meech204

You can’t win against cheaters. Elections have consequences and unfortunately we’re all gonna pay for it.

    • Maxx

It certainly appears as though our candidate was Nostradamus, the other?

  • Peetweefish

Worst president in history. Won a second term after the worst first term in history. Second term is going to be as bad or worse. History will not be kind to this president.

    • Connie M

But think how happy Jimmy Carter must be ;o)

    • GreenEyedGal

Sure it will. Leftists write the history books.

      • Peetweefish

He’s pissed off enough people who work for him that the memoirs and tell all books a few years after he’s no longer president will be revealing and likely devestating. They’re keeping their mouths shut now because he’s still a political force even if he’s an impotent leader. Bad career move.

        • GreenEyedGal

Do you remember the Clintons? They tarnished everyone who came within 10 feet of them. And it pissed off lots and lots of people. But look who’s running in 2016. Apparently it didn’t piss off enough of them to inspire the leftists to write the truth in their history books. Plus, we know that no matter what, proggies circle the wagons. They don’t attack their own. The left will make sure that history continues to portray this evil man as the Best. President. Evah!

          • Peetweefish

Slick Willie was carismatic beyond the teleprompter and continues to carry political clout. Also, Hillary is still in politics and popular so they’re not going to be saying ill of the Clintons as they are still valuable to the party. Once Obama leaves the White House his value to the party ends. Dems facing reelection are already distancing themselves from him and Hillary’s 2016 platform will be nothing like Obama’s. His relevancy in American politics ends with his precidency.

      • Stephen L. Hall

Because we fund “public” education, subsidizing leftists just trains more of them.

        • GreenEyedGal

          That’s why I homeschool :)

          • TexasMom2012

            Good for you GEL.
We carefully researched the local school districts before we bought our first home (1990) and before we even had children so I didn’t home school because it wasn’t necessary.
My sister did home school her oldest and put the youngest in private schools up to high school.
All that being said, if I hadn’t been so confident of our local schools and heavily involved in those same schools, I would have homeschooled. There are so many stay home moms here that stay hooked into the schools and we communicate. I am not sure now that I would make the same decision today but the youngest will be a senior this year so that ship has sailed.
I admire anyone who makes the commitment to give their children a better education plus the homeschool community has truly grown and offers a multitude of opportunities.

      • TexasMom2012

But the nonfiction books written by more conservative authors are the ones on the bestsellers list!

  • waterytart

It is so sad to me when I see the pic of that beautiful home, crumbling to the ground. There are so many now decrepit, but once beautiful homes in Detroit that it’s heartbreaking. I used to drive around down there and think, geez, if I could just move that one out to “Hooterville” where I live………..

  • I M Free

    hahahaha! hohohohoho!

  • Kate

I grew up in the metro Detroit area (ironically, most of the suburbs are upper-middle/upper class- and fairly conservative). I just want to give a BIG “f you” to former Gov. Granholm, former Mayor Kilpatrick, and all of the Union Bosses whose horrible leftist policies bankrupted the city.

What’s worse, I live in downtown Chicago, and I see the exact same thing happening in this city. Liberals never learn from their failed ideas, they just pack up and implement them somewhere else.

    Okay…rant over!

    • nc

What are you, some kind of masochist?

      • Dee

No kidding! I mean, the whole country is suffering, but at least in the South you aren’t surrounded by leftist a$$holes. They’re here, but there’s not enough of them so they’re avoidable.

    • 1389AD
      • Zane Henry

        10.25% sales tax

more people on assistance than paying taxes

3 consecutive governors visiting the grey bar hotel.

highest teacher salaries in the nation with 80% pensions which nets them the poorest outcomes in the nation.

        nation’s (probably world’s) murder capital.

How can anyone admire all that?

        • lainer51

libs admire every breath he takes, even at their own peril.

        • lainer51

libs admire every breath he takes, even at their own peril.

  • M F Scotto

He’s right. He didn’t let it go bankrupt, he pushed it into bankruptcy with his leftist agenda.

  • TJ

To be fair Obama was not talking about Detroit the city just the union part of The Motors City and all other union controlled auto manufactures. Romney would be talking about the city. Obama would not want it to be separated so the Union getting a bailout hoping it would help the tax base of the city. Well the auto bailout bubble burst.

    • SR5150

Why did the “auto bailout bubble burst”?!? GM and Chrysler still exist and are doing fine.

      • OldLady Norma

Unfortunately, Detroit is not the only place in the US or the world where cars are made. Mexico, Canada, and China plants of GM and Chrysler also received Obama$$. How stupid that they didn’t know that our money would go to create more jobs overseas. Obama wasn’t going to do that either. We are all fucked! We didn’t even enjoy it, more the pity.

  • M F Scotto

I can’t say I wasn’t warned. He told me that if I voted for Romney that Detroit would go bankrupt.

    • MNWoman

      Haha. Great comment.

I, too, should have considered myself warned.

  • grais

He wasn’t going to; now that he won another term, he is going to.
    This is no surprise.

  • NRPax

Just wait: “Detriot” is now going to be as racist as “Chicago.”

    • Love of Country

Did you mean to say Debt Riot or was that just some weird Freudian Typo?

      • NRPax

It was a typo, but you know something? I think the new name works just fine.

      • Agent777

  • no_more_deceit

“President Obama: “We refused to throw in the towel and do nothing. We refused to let Detroit go bankrupt.”
See he didn’t “do nothing” – he didn’t throw in the towel.

    • Mr. Saturn

And Detroit got pummeled to death.

  • Booker

It looks like Obama didn’t bring home the bacon, like that councilwoman said. No bacon for you, Detroit.

    • Kakarot

No problem. From what I hear, the city is about half Muslim by now, anyway.

  • DrSamHerman

And Odimbulb thinks he will get Congress to go for that?

  • ObamaFail

Translation: I’m not going to let it go bankrupt, I’m going to MAKE it become bankrupt.

  • yourmamatoo

The serial liar is responsible. As are the folks who voted for him.
And who kept the Democrats in power in Detroit.

  • FlatFoot

“Preezy of teh United Steezy” Barack Hussein Obama — Perpetual. Abject. Failure.

  • Ruth

Obama: “If I had a city, it would look just like Detroit.”

  • vcferlita

And workers at Caterpillar were all going to et their jobs back.

    • MNWoman

I started a list earlier in this comment section about all the failed promises in response to Pete P.’s comment. Since there are so many failed promises it is hard to keep up with them.

  • tops116

When asked for comment, Jay Carney responded, “Uh, it’s Romney’s fault.”

  • RedSoloCup

That’s the problem when you put too much faith in your beloved union lackeys, Barry.

  • Martin Stringer

Wait, you think Obama cares even a little about anybody or anything but himself, his 100 million dollar vacations and Golfing? Wow were you totally fooled. He doesn’t have to run again, so he doesn’t have to even LOOK like he’s is going to keep any of his promices.

  • rivers

Well, in the words of George W. Bush, heckuva job, Brownie!

  • writer59

Hey, Detroit! You get what you vote for. You’ve just been Obama’d. How you liking him now?

  • Right Wired

    Chicago is next.

  • JR48

I wasn’t going to let Detroit go bankrupt……before the election.

Bluntly speaking, the only thing that city had going for it as far as he was concerned was a handful of votes. They’re not needed now. So thanks for everything Detroit, buh-bye!

  • SideshowJon36

If I lived in Toledo, I’d be pretty worried right about now

  • JSP42

This is so intellectually dishonest. By Detroit he meant the US auto industry.

Go read the transcript of the speech.

“Every year around this time, American car companies start rolling out their newest, shiniest models, hoping to entice you into buying one. It’s Detroit’s chance to show you what they’ve been working on – the latest and greatest. And this year is no exception. They’ve got some pretty good-looking cars coming out.”

“Just a few years ago, the auto industry wasn’t just struggling – it was flatlining. GM and Chrysler were on the verge of collapse. Suppliers and distributors were at risk of going under. More than a million jobs across the country were on the line – and not just auto jobs, but the jobs of teachers, small business owners, and everyone in communities that depend on this great American industry.

But we refused to throw in the towel and do nothing. We refused to let Detroit go bankrupt. We bet on American workers and American ingenuity, and three years later, that bet is paying off in a big way.”

If you understand the context you see “Detroit” is a synonym for the US auto industry, specifically GM and Chrysler.

And did those companies declare bankrupcy yesterday? No. Then Obama didn’t break his promise because he never said he wouldn’t let Detroit THE CITY go bankrupt.

BTW I’m not a Obama supporter nor a liberal so don’t bother with “Your just an Obama apologist!!” ad hominem. I’ve criticised Obama for bad things he’s done like KILLING A US CITIZEN WITHOUT DUE PROCESS. But I don’t criticise him for fake controversies like this.

    • MarcusFenix

I can totally see where you’re going with this, and I don’t disagree entirely, but…I would point to the fact that his speech doesn’t limit him to helping just the auto workers. He pointed out to the other jobs (and yes, I’m being broad since he was making the broad point of “millions of jobs across the country”, even though a good percentage of them were the secondary jobs in and around Detroit) that he was saving, and yet….

      Bankruptcy happened anyway.

You do make a valid point that most people are more fixated on a quote, rather than the bulk of his points, but in the end, the result looks to have been the same.

    • Kakarot

You’re saying that when Obama said “I wasn’t going to let Detroit go bankrupt. . . . . ”, he didn’t really mean that he was going to keep the city of Detroit from going through bankruptcy.

By that point Obama had ALREADY let (forced?) GM & Chrysler go into bankruptcy. So he couldn’t been talking about the auto industry. (which, by the by, involves a whole lot more than GM, FWIW) Now you’re saying he didn’t really mean the city of Detroit, either.

SO, what DID Obama mean, JSP?

  • JSP42

Frankly liberals and conservatives have both shown that they’d rather believe in a narrative that is both comfortable and feels true to them even if it’s contradicted by facts.

With liberals it’s things like the Trayvon shooting, with conservatives it’s basically anything to do with Obama.

  • dogwonder

Demorats had sixty years to ruin Detroit, Obama only has three years left to do the self same thing to America.

    • snorky neederecker

Three more years of this garbage and I think we’ll have not much left of America. That’s why I moved and support TEXAS SECESSION!

    • snorky neederecker

Three more years of this garbage and I think we’ll have not much left of America. That’s why I moved and support TEXAS SECESSION!

  • TexasMom2012

Obama, “I wasn’t going to allow Detroit to go bankrupt”
    Subtext, “During an election year.”

  • Jamie Huff

C’mon guys. Obama has been working overtime to keep Detroit from going bankrupt….Fore! more years.
