Texas Senate passes Gosnell-inspired abortion restrictions

The bill placing limits on abortions after 20 weeks and imposing tougher safety standards on abortion clinics in Texas passed late Friday night 19-11 and now heads to Gov. Rick Perry for his signature.

The capital had been placed on lockdown about an hour earlier as troopers began removing protesters who smeared themselves with fake blood and chained themselves to the railing in the gallery. Sen. Wendy Davis, whose filibuster in June had helped delay the passage of the bill, accused her pro-life colleagues of twisting the rules.

The #Stand4Life contingent found reason to make a little noise of its own.

Remember this?

“Barack Obama,” also known as the independent non-profit Organizing for Action, was quick to spin the defeat.

  • Catchance

So pleased that they got the bill passed. Now they’re going to have to stand their ground as Planned Parenthood sues to stop it.

    • V the K

Now, we stand by and watch as exactly NONE of the left’s hysterical predictions about rape and coat-hangers come to pass.

  • Michele Pullara Allen

Why is the President still campaigning? Isn’t he suppose to be the president of ALL the people? Once again he shows that he is only the president of those that agree with his point of view. What has he got against unborn babies?

  • William J. Miller

Mr. President, please butt out of our state’s business. You have enough with which to divide the country with Federal matters. When you’re actually in Washington.

I am a very proud Texan!

    • William J. Miller

Should read, “Mr. President’s front group that feigns independence.” Oops.

  • CR

“Sen Davis: We’ve all watched as rules of this body have been twisted to ensure the bill passes”

Here Wendy, I fixed it for you:
“I had a 13-hour-long tantrum to try to obstruct the will of the vast majority of Texans because I knew the pro-abort media would be in my favor. The republicans stopped that from happening again to carry out the will of the people. Oh… and to stop some murders.”

Also: IRONY. Obamacare passing with NO republican votes & hated by vast majority = holy grail of democracy. Not giving into the feces throwers = Evil fascists trying to destroy women by subverting the will of the pro-aborts.

    • tjp77

The fact that the state of Texas could even produce a politician like Wendy Davis is extremely worrisome.

The Texas GOP needs to really get itself into gear, because even though they won here, the libs feel like they gained a ton of momentum and will be pouring resources into the state like we’ve never seen before.

      We cannot get too comfortable.

      • CR

I agree, to an extent, and I fully agree w/ the fact that Wendy-the-Babykiller is a Texas politician is VERY worrisome (I also worry for our country that someone could become famous in a GOOD way for championing the cause of killing babies who are five months along).

But I think that the libs picked the wrong issue here.

The only way they’ll EVER win in Texas is to get the hispanic and minority voters out to vote in much higher numbers and abortion is a terrible issue to try to do that with as even Politico pointed out: http://www.politico.com/story/2013/07/texas-abortion-debate-latinos-93791.html

  • Love of Country

I heard Wendy Davis was darn near in complete disbelief when the bill had finally passed … I love it!

Ha ha! Actually that looks more like Kathleen Swillbelius to me but I suppose you could apply this picture to a whole bunch of lefty hags!

  • stevearizona

What is it the Liberals say–We voted, you lost, now get over it!!!!!

  • Catchance

“Go elsewhere where it’s not safe.” Did you even READ the bill? First of all, it’s not stopping all abortions, only those OVER 20 WEEKS! That’s nearly 5 months, for you math-challenged Demwits. Second, they were requiring abortion clinics to have the same health standards as regular clinics; you know, the ones with real doctors, and to have actual trained personnel helping, rather than some 20-year-old half-wit who hadn’t washed her hands.

Also, I live in Arizona, where we passed a similar bill to this last year. Planned Parenthood was against it, of course. It means the loss of some big bucks to them.

    • nc

Why bother, it’s not listening. I regret that I also wasted a reply on the useless troll.

    • OldmanRick

      You are absolutely correct. Kudos.

  • stevearizona

Liberals will protect spotted owls, whales and porpoises, will protest the execution of a convicted murderer yet unborn human are always “in season”.

In 2011 there were 1.2 Million abortions and 30,000 deaths attributed to hand guns – including murder, suicide and accidents. Which one does the Liberal focus on. Which one upsets the Liberal? Which one does a Liberal want to control?

    Liberal = Hypocrite

  • stevearizona

The standard timetable for abortions in Europe is 12-14 weeks, they say a child in the womb feels pain at the point of 20 weeks, if a women wants to have an abortion she would certainly know and be able to do so before 20 weeks?

  • Lady 12

You lost any credibility with your first comment.

  • CR

Um. What exactly is the problem with the “real doctors” comment?

I know you probably don’t read news sites except those that reinforce your distorted world view, but perhaps you have heard of Gosnell’s clinic where there were 15-year-olds administering anesthesia. If not, Google might be your friend on this before you make an unfounded attack on someone’s credibility.

  • Jessica

  • Jeremy

you are the fool with that comment.

  • Jessica

Are you for real? Are you really going to insult her? Please show some maturity.

  • William J. Miller

Here’s the law. Point to where she is wrong. Or do you just insult and then run away like a 5 year old pulling pigtails?

  • Jack Deth

So says the bought and paid for Planned Parenthood troll with 186 comments. Nearly all lamely trying to rebut the latest smack down of the failed and flustered, post-filibuster, Wendy Davis.

  • HWarrior13

    Hey Libs…Remember, elections have consequences.

  • nc

Not surprised, but very gratified. Go Texas!

  • HWarrior13

Oh well…sucks to be a baby killer.
Maybe this law will make at least a few of them think twice before hitting those back alleys…that ought to save a few babies lives.

    • Spiny Norman

Inconvenient fact: the restrictions imposed by HB 2 are still more liberal than those in almost ALL of “enlightened” Europe, where the gestational limit is typically 12 weeks:

      • Mr_Wrestling_XIII

Exactly. I thought these Dems are Europhiles?

  • Roger Taylor

Villa- you didn’t offer a single substantive facts to rebut Catchance’s claim. You simply engaged in some unfounded speculation and mind-reading.

It is a matter of fact and law that before this bill was passed, abortion clinics could be operated by people who lacked the medical credentials necessary to be doctors- or even registered nurses.

This bill ensures that women going to an abortion clinic will be treated by accredited physicians and their equivalent.

That beats a coat hanger in a back alley any day.

  • Finrod Felagund

All you’ve done is hold abortion clinics to the same medical standards as any medical clinic.

Fixed that for you. You seem to think it’s OK for women to have abortions in unsanitary and unsafe clinics.

  • NY2DC

Actions speak louder than words. All the fake outrage you saw from the left over Gosnell was just for show.

    • Grassroots Gaston

Gosnell outrage from the left? Really? I must have missed it. From some of the loudest lefties (“msm”) you barely knew the trial was even happening.

      • NY2DC

While I agree that the vast majority of the MSM ignored it, there were obviously a few news outlets covering the story, otherwise none of us would know about it. Fox covered the story, and throughout their coverage they brought a number of liberal guests on who all muttered the same BS line, something to the effect of “Although what Gosnell did was horrific & disgusting (fake outrage), it’s all the more reason to keep abortion legal, so women never have to face those horrors again.” I also heard Nancy Pelosi make that same point. It must have been in the talking points.

  • Hodor

    Sorry, but…

Passing new abortion restrictions to “prevent” future Gosnells is every bit as asinine as passing new gun laws in the wake of a shooting. The same argument holds true, guys. Criminals, by definition, do not obey the law. A lot of stuff Gosnell did was already illegal.

I do agree that 5 months is plenty long for a woman to make this type of decision and act upon it and that a higher level of medical standards should be followed but that’s not the point. The point is that this is the same type of “feel good” legislation which will do absolutely nothing to accomplish its stated objective but will provide plenty of political ammunition for the other side.

    • NY2DC

Yeah, except one of those is actually guaranteed in the constitution, isn’t it? Your logic can be applied to anything. We made homicide illegal, but people still get murdered…Should we take it off the books? The law says you need to have insurance to drive, but uninsured people still get behind the wheel and get in accidents. Should we eliminate the law? You said you agree with “higher medical standards”, but isn’t that just more “feel-good” legislation? I mean, you can tell abortionists they have to abide by these standards, but does that mean they’re going to? My point is that every law that’s ever passed is done with the knowledge that some people are inevitably going to break it and some are going to get away with it. So, should we just not have any laws? There’s no way to enforce every law on everyone at every time. All laws are broken every day and we can’t prosecute all of the offenders, so should we just get rid of the laws? Or should we open the lawbreakers to legal action and penalties? Do you have a counter-proposal to this legislation?

    • NY2DC

Also, I’d just like to add something in regards to your point about arming political opposition. What else is new? This is brand new legislation, but liberals have been accusing us of being anti-woman forever. Regardless of the outcome of this vote, they’re going to call us names. It’s like immigration. McCain, Graham & Rubio all played ball, so do you think that will give them immunity from future political attacks? I don’t. That’s how the left operates. I don’t think you vote for/against anything based on how your opponents may frame it, and when you consider that libs are going to attack us no matter what we do, it becomes a moot point.

      • Hodor

You are absolutely correct about that. Conservatives will never get any props from libs or the media (same thing I know) and no, we should not play the game of watering down our ideals in trying to curry favor.

I recognize that the issues diverge in regards to enumerated rights.
My main objection is in regards to the reactionary nature and selling of the legislation which, to me, looks every bit as wrong- headed and dishonest as the arguments fom gun control zealots.

        • NY2DC

Yeah, but based on what? Conservatives have been fighting this battle forever. It’s not like they just came out of the woodwork. Libs only roll out the gun-control rhetoric when there’s been a shooting and emotions can be played. I’m trying to understand your point, but I don’t see a correlation between people trying do destroy the Bill of Rights and people fighting for the rights of unborn babies.

DEO GRATIAS for the staunch and fearless Legislators in TEXAS! **__** …. they remind me of the staunch and fearless Legislators in WISCONSIN who battled the ghastly leftist BIG LABOR-backed protestors 2 years ago, in order to hold on to their Reformer Governor Scott Walker, and his Reforms that turned WI around!

America – you CAN be restored … who would have believed 5 years ago, that ‘blue’ Wisconsin could have a Conservative REFORMER in the Governor’s mansion and a Conservative-controlled State House to push through saving reform, in the TEETH of the violent UGLY BIG LABOR-backed Leftists?????

Tea Party America! – YOU ARE SUCCEEDING! Multiple High Fives to all you Patriots out there! **__**

On reflection, one can see that the ghastly Gosnell trial and it’s accompanying exposure of the horrors of infanticide, really helped prepare the way for this historic legislation in TX …… I hope that many further States will follow the lead of Texas as we battle to RESTORE Traditional American Culture

…. with the abortion issue prominent, Madame Steel Spine comes to mind …

DEO GRATIAS for the rugged Palin family who do not cower when the Leftist Bullies unleash. There are so many things about Gov Sarah Palin that trigger their irrational hatred … in fact, you would have to say that EVERYTHING about her drives them nearly crazy with anger, hatred ……. and FEAR

It is a little known fact but Gov Palin’s appearance on the National Stage on Sep 3rd 2008, (she and her family, including her younger son Trig introduced to > 40M Americans) had a profound impact on the key cultural issue of abortion.

If you track the bimonthly Gallup Poll numbers for pro-life/pro-choice through 2008, and look what happened at the sep/oct mark, then the trend since, you will see that the pro-life numbers exceeded pro-choice in America for the FIRST time, I think since Gallup has begun polling the issue.

IMV, THIS statistic is at the root of the Leftists’ FEAR of Gov Sarah Palin and is why they respond with PDS whenever she becomes prominent in the Media. If the Palin family were to live at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, would American Culture continue to move in the current direction of degradation, or is there a chance there would be a cultural swing toward more traditional American values?

  • Damien Johnson

Should be the lead story far as I’m concerned! We stood up to those satanic baby killers and let them know their kind is not welcome here! TEXAS STANDS FOR LIFE.

  • CR

I wonder if it ever occurred to you that one of the reasons why so much pro-life legislation has been passed this year is that republicans WANT these cases to go to court.

I am sure it hasn’t because you probably aren’t quite sure how the legal system works.

Here’s some info for you. There must be an actual case in controversy that makes its way to the Supreme Court before they can modify or change laws…. If there is fundamental disagreement among state laws and multiple different states raising a similar question, it increases the chances that the SCOTUS will hear a case…

    Food for thought.

  • CR

Also: fundamental differences between O-care and this new law.

    1. The majority of Texans support the new abortion restrictions. The majority of people in the U.S. have not and do not support Obamacare.

    2. This was a bipartisan piece of legislation w/ some democrats voting in favor and speaking passionately in favor of the law. O-care was very decidedly NOT.

  • nc

So what else is new? Libbies always file lawsuits when laws or votes don’t go their way.

  • Karl H

Allow me to explain: Roe v Wade was made at a time before much of todays medical understanding. It was argued with effort to obfuscate a lot of medical facts. Please bring an action to court and please lets go all the way to the Supreme Court and while you are at it file suits against other states that do similar laws.

Each and every case that makes it to the SC will mean nothing but holding ground for the socialist democrat party but each case is one more torpedo aimed straight at the heart of the liberal agenda.

So what this means is people on your side who actually are educated have to weigh the desire of the useful idiots such as yourself or backing down and trying another approach. My guess is they will feign a fight so the useful idiots will still contribute to the money machine but they will throw the fight so they do not risk losing ground on a federal level.

Come on look how easily Latios and Blacks play the shell game and loose with each and every Democrat. It’s like watching a child play with dolls. If they truly did not know how easy it is to keep them both on the plantation do you think they would only be rolled out in the run up to an election cycle? I mean come on Obamacare passed and they had a chance to pass amnesty even on a slow timeline and they pushed it back to after the elections they knew they were going to loose the super majority on. Because ultimately they needed those plantation latinos for the 2012 elections. And boy did they get them. But really how many latinos are in decision making rolls at the DNC? Oh wait it is a big group of rich old white men, many who stood or whos fathers stood strongly against civil rights. Damn if they have not kept all those good democrat plantations still running since 1865.

Goodbye, Moscovite. Your little Gulag on the Colorado is a great place to keep inmates like you from harming the rest of the state.

  • CR

Here’s the difference. What republicans are doing will actually save lives (mom and baby) and makes sense because it addresses the specific problems that led to Gosnell (inadequate regulation of clinics and late-term abortion).

The dems gun control push would have had absolutely zero impact on preventing another Sandy Hook and did not solve the problem that led to the school shooting. Pretty sure the republicans would have supported a ban on mentally disturbed kids stealing someone else’s guns as well as a ban on murdering kids, were such a thing needed (It isn’t, see, because there are already a few laws against those things).

  • AMERICAN Kafir™(KAdams)

I love how you conveniently forget that not just babies died in Gosnell’s clinic, but an adult woman as well.

No, they just made sure that there won’t *be* any Gosnell-esque clinics in Texas…so why are you against that?

As an educated and properly raised Latino, I favor allowing people to learn the issues, come to their own conclusions, and vote based on their values. all of these storied HUGE lists of unwanted children DO NOT EXIST. Waiting lists for adoptable children are a half decade long in some states. That’s right, there is an actual SHORTAGE of children, you dope. All this LAW will mean is the abortuaries will have to clean up their act and women will have a couple fewer weeks to decide to murder their child. Too effing bad if some go out of business. When the so-called Child Protective Service makes it nearly impossible for people to adopt these children, your argument falls flat. I have friends who have been trying for years to adopt some of the children they have fostered, and every time but one, the children have been pulled from their home and sent back to the hellish homes of their biological parent(s) because the mother and/or father has “reformed”, just to have them pulled from the biological families’ homes repeatedly.

I know my view is “unique” and not the norm, but for me it’s not a black and white issue…Bottom line, the right is by FAR more respectful of me sharing my opinion than the left.

Tell me about it. I live in the SF Bay Area! Respect and tolerance goes out the window, if you dare to have different political views.

Let’s not forget that those “courageous” Democrats fled to Oklahoma to avoid a vote on redistricting. We have the Equivalent of Brave Sir Robin for legislators on the left.

Forgot about the Texas 11. More fleabagging from petulant Democrats. I remember they ended up in Albuquerque too and all came back when one of them caved. To some extent, they were worse than the Wisconsin and Indiana fleabaggers.

agreed. Nobody was threatening them to sway their votes, as is the style of big labor goons. The Texas 11 just shirked responsibility because they weren’t going to get their way.

True that….but he did sign it in the end. The good ol days of having a GOP with a steel spine and (if we have to) a Democratic president, who did what the F he was told to do by the likes of Newt et al, appear to be gone forever.

LOL! Rumor has it that he even has to ply his hand with lots of drinks ahead of time….
