And that poor guy on the Time Bandit (Deadliest Catch) all but lost his entire hand from a fireworks mishap …. or a mortar as he called it. The most gnarly fireworks accident you can imagine busting all the bones in his hand with lots of fractured bones sticking right through the top of his hand. And just in case you missed it on TV last Tuesday, he possibly might have been better off just putting his eye out while running with a stick like my next door neighbor did in 2nd grade …. it was that bad. Godspeed to all.

I had Family & Friends over to shoot guns on our private Shooting Range (Nice to live out in the country) as we had Burgers made from Small Game with all the normal 4th of July food.
Lots of Paper and Plastic Bottles fatally shot as we all had fun.
Best wishes to those in Simi.

This happened in the general area in which I live – 20 mins from me. A good friend of mine was one of the ones transported to the hospital with injuries. I’ll let him know you enjoyed your burgers made of small game with all the normal 4th of July food on your private shooting range and killed a bunch of paper and plastic. That ought to take his mind off the burns to his face and body.

If Sur Mar had known of your friend he (she?) may not have made that post. All Sur Mar was pointing out was that a bunch of people used firearms rather than fireworks to celebrate. They used them safely and legally for the purpose for which they were made and no one got hurt.

I’m sorry for your friend. I hope he gets out of the hospital soon and can resume taking care of his family. My prayers for him. I used to have friends in Simi Valley so I was concerned for everyone there.

I thought fireworks operators (whatever they are called) had emergency cut-off switches to prevent such tragedies.

        • Michelle

I didn’t take Sur Mar’s post personally and it doesn’t matter that he didn’t realize some on here might have had friends injured, I would have made my comment anyway. I simply found it odd someone would post about a delightful 4th of July they had in the comment section of a story about people injured by fireworks exploding into the crowd.

          • GaryTheBrave

The first comment was about a guy on a reality show, not about the Simi event. You didn’t comment on that.

BTW, how is your friend doing?

There was no disrespect towards those who were hurt in Simi Valley.
If one watches the News one would think that all the injuries should have been at my place and not at a Fireworks Display.

        • GaryTheBrave

That was my point, though I wasn’t as succinct. The MSM thinks that you get two people with guns in the same proximity they;re going to draw down on each other.

Very sad news here in SoCal. It was all over the news as I was driving home from a friend’s house, then got a call about 30 mins ago that a close friend of mine was one of the ones injured – he was there with his three sons. The kids are OK, friend was burned on face and body, and was sent to the hospital. Prayers for him, he’s a single full-time father…his young sons are very upset by what they went through and are without their father until he’s released from hospital.

    • wwbdinct

How awful! Please let us know how he is doing and when he is released from the hospital. Poor kids must be so scared!

Wishing your friend a speedy recovery.

Justice Allen @Floeticjae: “Almost just died…leave it to Simi Valley to have a firework explosion.” 11:50 PM – 4 Jul 2013

Oh, yeah, and prayers for all the injured, but still, this is all about me.

    Idiot.

Best wishes to all injured in Simi Valley.

Oh my, are Mohameddan terrorists going to take credit for this too?

    Prayers to the people of Simi Valley… They should do their Fireworks shows on a lake, or off-shore, Like Ron-Jon’s Surf shop does every year in Cocoa Beach, Fla. but I guess they don’t want to violate the rights or risk hurting Marine life, which apparently has more rights than we do… Jawamax 8<{D}

Fireworks over water is not only more safe, but it’s a more beautiful show. Loved the 4th when I lived in Boston, their show (the one that is nationally televised) is done from barges on the Charles River. Unfortunately, we don’t have many lakes in this area of SoCal – we’re a system of valleys that are pretty much deserts, and Simi is about 30 miles from the coast. So it’s not a matter of them not wanting to harm marine life, there is no body of water in or near Simi Valley.

On another note – Simi Valley is a Republican majority and is not full of Liberals who value marine over human life. Bush was their pick in 2000 and 2004. Simi and where I live are the same congressional district, and our Representative in the House is a Republican.

Always smart to stay back from cannons and other stuff that goes boom! If the fireworks mortar launch tubes fall down or get blown over they will fire the explosive packages horizontally instead of vertically.

If the strongest mortar in a display goes up 300 feet should the crowd be kept 300 feet from the launch pad?

HI G.T.B.–if fired at a 45 degree angle a 300 ft high shell could probably go more than 600 ft horizontally. The firing box should be anchored to the ground or cement. Like trailers have ground anchor rods and cables.
