Bette Midler thinks Kauai is a goner because of GMO testing there

Actress and singer Bette Midler has already proven her “expertise” on climatology and mental health policy.

Now, once again, she is showing off her “knowledge” of genetically-modified organisms.

Bless her heart.

Go take your medication and quit begging for attention you washed up old fool.

  • 96leroy

    What a has-been!

    • Jeremy

      She has lost her mind.

    • el_polacko

to be fair, she’s hardly a “has-been”. her last couple of cds have won grammies, she’s currently in a play on broadway for which she was considered for a tony award, and she recently ended a multi-year stint in vegas which was extremely successful…interesting side note on the vegas thing: she demanded that she be paid IN GOLD !! her politics may be screwy but the old broad doesn’t play around when it comes to her money !

      • Secede

I bet you love to dress up like her on “Drag Queen Day”, don’t you ?

Science says GMOs are 100% safe. Liberals are anti-science.

    • Grandma HeadInjury

      Best argument of the day!

    • Ben Bollman

Unfortunately not just liberals, there are plenty of anti-technology people on all sides. All of them wrong.

      • Stone Bryson

Anti-technology? As I communicate with you on high-technology? Sure Ben… why not LOL.

Seriously, you admit that GMO’s are driven by technology, yes? That these foods are enhanced by technology. And, by default, you admit you trust the corporations using said-technology – corporations which are in bed with global government(s) – to only have your best health interests at heart.

        Your trust is precious…

        • Ben Bollman

Apple is in bed with them too, that doesn’t mean I’m going to quit using my iPhone which is because the technology itself is good. Here is an idea, buy stuff labeled “organic” if you want organic food. Easy peezy. But no, you ‘anti-government libertarian’ guys MUST have government force companies to label their stuff because that is the ‘anti-government’ thing to do.

    • Secure

Chuck Norris also does not approve of GMO’s. He is not a liberal.

      • Clete Torres

The Gallant Men of Olds have been gone for years.

        • Secure

John Wayne & Frank Sinatra? Or Liberace & George Burns?

          • Clete Torres

There was a GM auto ad campaign years ago for their Oldsmobile Division called the Gallant Men of Olds. I was referencing that. Maybe it was a regional thing.

      • Ben Bollman

        Then Chuck Norris is wrong.

    • Stone Bryson

Ooooooooh so NOW we’re going to trust science. Because science has it soooo right with the whole ‘humans causing climate change’ thing, therefore we can trust them with GMO’s, natch.

Oh, and before you call me a liberal, I am not. Just your friendly neighborhood libertarian (my posts here back this up) who is not afraid to say that GMO’s are NOT natural; as such, I need more than government-sponsored ‘science’ to trust the safety of such products.

I’m sighing right now… it’s almost getting tiresome, having this debate with people I normally agree with 80%-90% of the time. Furthermore, having to side with the usually witless Midler is discouraging… but – in this rare case – she’s right.

      • Finrod Felagund

The difference between GMOs and ‘climate change’ is that there are lots and lots of scientists that disbelieve climate change, despite what the warmists claim. Statisticians in particular are generally appalled at how the warmists abuse their field to come up with their numbers. In contrast, there are very few reputable scientists that are worried about GMOs, and pretty much every one of them is the type to let their crunchy nature override their scientific instincts.

Also, the human race has been modifying plants for thousands of years, ever since cross-pollination was developed. Modern ‘climate change’ theories were all developed after 1990.

        • Stone Bryson

Actually, there have been reports of ‘climate change’ as it is supported now going back at least to the 1920’s. But that’s a side issue.

As for the ‘lots and lots’ (not sure how many that is in percentages) of scientists disputing the ‘humans causing climate change’ claims… those same scientists are still considered foolish by the mainstream scientific community. Also remember, the first scientists who challenged the change model in the 1990’s were treated with the same derision as those who are challenging the GMO claims today.

If one is not going to trust scientists when they get their funding from entities with a vested interest in the science (be it a government or a corporate entity), they should apply that standard across the board. Say what you will about my thoughts, but at least I am consistent.

  • Waldo

Why isn’t Twitchy using that crazy photo of Midler?

    • Clete Torres

      It is.

  • trixiewoobeans

Look at me! Look at me! I tweet, therefore I am!

    • el_polacko

isn’t this why ANYbody tweets ? if it weren’t for tweeters (twits?) there would be no twitchy. the irony…you’re soaking in it !

  • TocksNedlog

What, Obama can stop the Keystone pipeline dead in its tracks, but he can do nothing to prevent this?

    Bette to Barack:
“Did you ever know you’re NOT my hero?”

  • Garth Haycock

No worries. There are still 6 or 7 other islands left.

  • Markward

hard to believe twichy can write a sentence with the word “thinks” and Bette Midler in it.

  • tjp77

I’ll be more than happy to take it if nobody else wants it when they’re done.

  • notenoughtime

It’s sad how a little bit of information in a little mind is twisted and turned.

  • Kenneth James Abbott

I love how genetically modified plants are supposed to be the newest step in science-gone-too-far.

What do they think we’ve been doing to the things for the last FOUR THOUSAND YEARS!?!

    • Mark81150

Indeed.. I worked 30 years in retail food.. most folks have no idea how stupid they are on this subject,.. whenever you graft one plant strain onto another you are “modifying” it, changing it’s DNA..Wether it’s done by a corporation in a controlled setting.. or by Monks in an Abbey a thousand years ago to create new strains of wine grapes..

      it’s the same..

They’re just to bigoted against change to understand that.

  • RedSoloCup

    Bette Ding-Dong.

  • AMSilver

Oh, no!! Those evil, evil companies are going to be putting one of the worst pollutants ever into the air – POLLEN!!!! Goodbye, island. It was nice knowing you.

Random piece of information for those who might be interested: I worked a summer for a company that produced hybrid seeds in order to try and improve various traits in corn plants. We worked in an open-air field in Idaho. The job was to put a plastic bag over the top ear of corn on each plant (to prevent pollination from unwanted sources) and then a paper bag on top of the tassel to collect the pollen. Then later we’d go back down the aisle and put the pollen from the bag onto the silk of the protected ear of corn, cover it back up, and wait for it to grow to maturity. Ta-da! Science! (And no, I haven’t gotten cancer yet, despite working in that open air laboratory, breathing those fumes each weekday for an entire summer)

  • Ben Bollman

    Anti-GMO people commenting in 3….2….1

    • Stone Bryson

      Ohai! :-)

      • Ben Bollman

I wondered how long it would take you :)

        • Stone Bryson

LOL I was actually looking forward to our usual debate on this, but work kept me away from the computer all day. Now it’s an old story… next time, perhaps. :-)

  • Mark81150

Humans have been modifying plants and animals for thousands of years through hybrid plants, selective breeding of animals.. the modern breeds of dogs haven’t been ripping throats out have they?… millions fewer people are starving because of modified cereal grains, like rice and wheat..

What these clueless anti-science luddites are doing is nothing short of criminal..

Desperate to keep new grains off the market out of wildly irrational fear, they would let millions die from famine.. as long as THEY don’t have to fear.. what are a few more third world dead.. huh liberals.. feel good about this do you?

  • MKFenris

I hate these anti gmo idiots. More food produced because it was either made drought resistant or insect resistant, its a good thing. Besides people have been doing it for centuries, for instance corn was much smaller. The idiot hipsters can have their GMO free stuff, and last I checked none of these complainers have a degree to verify if it is bad.

  • Taylor Brown

Does anyone even know who Bette Midler is without looking her up on Wikipedia? Does anyone care what she thinks?

  • el_polacko

what’s the deal with the midler obsession on twitchy anyway ?? she’s a terrific entertainer but does anybody really care what her political views are ?

    • VotingForZombieReagan2016

Yes. We do care what her political views are. And obviously she does too or she’d stop preaching at everyone, every other day. If she’d shut her gob, Twitchy would have nothing to say about her.
And 'terrific entertainer'? I've NEVER found her screeching voice and sub-mediocre acting entertaining. She needs to shut up politically and professionally – the sooner, the better.

  • Macharius

Can rich celebrities stop coming to Hawaii and dictating what’s good for the people who live here? Seriously, we already have to deal with Rossane Barr and The Sierrra Club, can we not have Bette Midler too?

    • el_polacko

      she’s an hawai’ian native.

      • Macharius

No, she actually isn’t. Just as a word of warning, a lot of native Hawaiians take great offense to that… she is/was a local many years ago, however she’s not a Hawaiian native…she actually would be recognized as a Haole (pronounced how-lee). (FYI I’m not a native Hawaiian, I’m known as a Hapa Haole or mixed white/foreigner)

Also i would argue that she’s born in the city, and she’s telling what the country part of the island “should” do, etc etc etc. (another issue point in the islands)

  • MLCross

It’s just so sad to see a great set sweater puppies get old.
    and say things.

  • Right Wired

Midler wants all of Africa to starve to death, apparently. GMOs save lives. This is fact.

  • Ty Mcwilliams

I’m not oppose to GMO’s. Just opposed to not having the choice to buy non-GMO foods, which is where we’re headed.

  • Clete Torres

Jesus H Christ. Doesn’t she ever shut up?

  • Secede

Didn’t Midler get in trouble in Hawaii for cutting down a bunch of trees on her property there , which was against the law?
    She’s an environmental menace !

  • Ken Alan Draper

hate to tell her this, but All food crops are genetically modified. man has been genetically modifying plants throughout history. the original corn plant was small, & the corn was almost unedible. kind of like the field corn used today for industrial Uses & in livestock feed. remember that the next time you take a bite of that delicious ear of sweet corn you grew in your garden with “natural” seed.
