Horrible: Report of 18-19 Ariz. firefighters killed fighting #YarnellFire; ‘Everyone is leaving town’ [photos]

Horrible news from Arizona tonight:

From the Daily Courier:

The Prescott Fire Department lost nearly its entire crew today – the Granite Mountain Hotshots – with 18 firefighters dying and one surviving.

Prescott Fire spokesman Wade Ward told The Daily Courier the crew was battling the Yarnell fire, which has resulted in evacuations as it has grown to an estimated 1,300 acres in size.

A report of eight injured firefighters earlier in the evening was unconfirmed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with these brave heroes and their families.

The Arizona Republic reports the fire has burned over 2,000 acres and has zero containment.

Twitchy will monitor this story and post updates as they become available.

Updates: Some reports say death toll is 19.

Please keep all affected in your prayers.

AZ Sen. Flake reacts:

AZ’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County tweets:

Former AZ congresswoman Gabby Giffords adds:

One Twitter user in Arizona posts a photo of what seemingly started out as a small fire caused by lightning on Friday night.

I believe 1 crew member made it out and the others perished.

How sad to hear. I think that we should bring our military back home and put some of those war fighting machines to fighting fires. Think about how many water droppers we could build for the cost of a single F16.

A sad day for us in AZ. Prayers to the families.

  • June Stack

So sad to hear this. I am praying for all of the brave fire fighters that gave their lives trying to protect the town and their families that are left to pick up the pieces of their lives.

My Condolences to the families of this hotshot crew of 19 wildland fire fighters. RIP.

If you are wondering how you can help the families of the firefighters, consider making a donation to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, an organization that does wonderful work helping wildland firefighters and their families in situations like this.

There is a special place beyond this world for those who run in the opposite direction of those who are forced to flee. Prayers for the families of those warriors. May they find some solace knowing their loved ones died so that others could live.

My heart goes out to the families of those killed and all the residents of the beautiful state of Arizona. So much hurt for such wonderful people.

Michelle, Just awful. Sadly it could have been prevented but for the corruption in the federal government. A Florida company called Fire Ice has a gel that would have saved their lives and the homes. But one company gets all the business since its CEO used to be head of the Forest Service. Green product? Nope. A federal judge enjoined the Forest Service from using the product near waterways. President Obama, why not protect people and the environment?
