Minn. state Rep. Ryan Winkler calls Clarence Thomas an Uncle Tom, claims he didn’t know it was offensive

Minnesota state Rep. Ryan Winkler is about to learn a hard lesson: Twitchy is forever.

Upon hearing that the Supreme Court struck down part of the Voting Rights Act, the Democrat took to Twitter to attack Justice Clarence Thomas as an Uncle Tom. “#SCOTUS VRA majority is four accomplices to race discrimination and one Uncle Thomas. Marriage decision may blur Court’s backsliding,” he tweeted. He quickly deleted the tweet, but it was archived by Topsy.

Winkler’s account is not verified by Twitter, but it is linked from news articles and NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s website. Here’s what followed Winkler’s “Uncle Thomas” tweet:

What’s offensive is all the voter fraud being ignored by dupes like this. 19,000 Obama- 0 Romney in Philadelphia for one example.

    • v1cious

This always kills me. Why is it always voter fraud when it’s in urban areas? Would you same thing if it was Kentucky?

I would. If a district in Kentucky had a turn out in 2012 that was, oh say 20k for Romney vs. 0 for Obama, I’d be the first one calling shenanigans. There’s no way to believe that would have been an accurate voter turn out. There’s always someone who would go the other way.

      • Clete Torres

Fraud is fraud. Difference is we on the Conservative side actually want it prosecuted, even if it came from our side.

Doesn’t matter where, fraud IS FRAUD. There ARE stories of fraud out here in the sticks. Go do a search “Small Town Voter Fraud” one after another.

Requiring ID to vote solves a LOT of this. A woman here in OH was convicted recently, she was a pollworker and bragged to the local news that she had indeed, voted for Obama 6…that’s SIX<—– TIMES. Fraud? Yeah this crap kills me too.

the same way romney supporter roxanne rubin of nevada admitted to voter fraud and multiple voting.

          • Robbie C

And an ID vote would have prevented both issues. We get that.

          • derechista

absolutely , so you’re in favor of voter ID right?

          • michael s

My issue with voter id was it was it wasn’t used all the time. It could have been used during the 2012 republican primary. It was specifically targeted for the 2012 general election where Pres Obama was up for reelection. There were incorrect results during the republican primary, yet nobody said we need voter id here. That was my issue.

          • Adela Wagner

She voted once. Read the story.
And her case SHOULD have been looked into. Like I said “Fraud is FRAUD, doesn’t matter where”.
I am in favor of a clean election. Not the filthy crap we have allowed to happen. ALL THE MORE reason for VOTER ID…period.

        • Bdeholl

As a born and bred West Phila Republican, it is not surprising that Mitt would lose those precincts with zero votes, believe me. There was surely fraud in November, but that’s a poor example. 330-0, on average, for BHO in a poor, 100% black precinct is not at all surprising. Even some of the few black Republicans interviewed admitted voting for Obama. In the 28th Ward, there are 7 white people and Romney got 34 votes. Bush got zeroed in 5 precincts in 2004, McCain in 57 precincts in 2008, and 59 precincts in 2012. You can figure out why that jump happened, can’t you?

  • digitalPimple

Since the democrats lost power and full control in the south, there is no real need for VRA any longer. When all this was happening back in the day, the democrats controlled all this. They are the party of racists as clearly seen here.

    Read your history.

    • ObamaFail

The Democrats fought hard against the Civil Rights Act. That’s another tidbit of info that libs refuse to acknowledge.

      • michael s

why are the republicans the party of civil rights as you say constatntly attacking the voting rights act. as evidenced by the supreme court decision today.

        • redheadgrl

Why should 9 states be held to a different standard than the other 41 (or 48 if you are Mr. Obama)? All states should be held to the same standard. Not sure where you are from, but the South is very different now than it was in the 60s.

        • Ronald Green

Attacked? The VRA was written in such a way as it was to be reviewed periodically and done away with when no longer needed. Why is that so hard for you libtards to understand?

        • Erin Pereira

Repubs are the party of civil rights because they fought the Dems in order to PASS the civil rights bill.
The majority of Dems were AGAINST it. That was back when there was less
spin, and we named a bill about civil rights bill the civil rights bill. If this act had been proposed back then, it would have been called the “Ineligible voters electing democrats act.” But with today’s standards, they can spin their deception by calling it the Voting rights act, and people will say, “Hey, voting rights, who would be against that?” They get away with it because people don’t actually pay attention to more than the title, due to the dumbing down of American schools (thanks so much Dept of Education, another great democrat “accomplishment”).

        • derechista

Republican don’t treat people like children. I know it’s hard to grow up but why some people feel minorities need to be held by the hand in order to accomplish anything!

they removed ONE part of the act that targeted/singled out 9 states…by removing that ONE part, they made the law apply equally to all 50 states. The child shall not be held guilty for the sins of the father, at least not in the America that I was raised, live, and hope to grow old in.

        • Dave Suchy

do you also believe that the Republicans enacted the draft for Vietnam? or that the Democrats ended Vietnam?….the draft was Kennedy’s baby, the cease-fire was Nixon’s.

  • okieeagle

Of course we could implore the constituents of Minnesota to unseat this fool, but this is the state that voted Al Franken to office. Not surprising there are some racist white democrats there.

    • Mike S

His district is very diverse. I guess we’ll find out soon if it’s just opportunistic white people offended by this tweet or if black people just might agree with him.

  • likeablaze

He will not give a groveling apology and he’ll still be in his position tomorrow. He’ll probably be re-elected in the next round as well.

  • Timothy Powell

I’m sorry, but I don’t understand what is racist about asking somebody to show an ID. Are these people in opposition to today’s SCOTUS ruling suggesting that there are minorities in this country that are too ignorant to follow the simple instructions required in order to obtain a State issued ID card?

    • Mike S

They’re just siding with the mountains of evidence that ID laws prevent more legitimate voters from voting instead of preventing illegitimate voters. I know that your “common sense” guess should count for more than actual studies, but it doesn’t.

      • Guest

Please share some of these mountains of evidence to support yoursilly azzed claim.

      • Ronald Green

Please share some small bit of factual evidence to support your claim. It should be easy to do, if there are mountains of it.

        • Mike S

I know this internet comment game. I waste time compiling a bunch of links that you’d never really entertain anyway and then you try to attack the sources instead of the underlying veracity of the information and the methodology of the studies.

If you’re really that open minded, you wouldn’t still not know this. But, you’re welcome to google away. The DNC actually had a report last year that’s a good starting point because it cites to a number of peer-reviewed academic studies. The gist of the studies is that it will probably cost as much as 900 million dollars over the first four years of implementation and that will happen in states with a combined budget deficit of nearly $100 billion. The benefit will be the prevention of a handful of in-person voter fraud cases, as there have been hardly any proven instances in recent memory.

Voter fraud is an issue for old people still worried about JFK getting elected and for racists trying to keep minorities from voting. Anyone else wouldn’t be comfortable with the high costs and low rewards associated with it.

I’m not sure where you fall on all of that, but maybe you’ll prove my assumptions about you wrong and do a little research to see how wasteful and unnecessary these laws are.

If you really want to protect the integrity of our elections, lobby John McCain to reinstate his old campaign finace law (which he’s now on the record as against, despite having written it). That’s where we’ve lost control of elections. The hundreds of millions donated by a handful of citizens gives them more power than anyone stuffing a ballot box could ever have.

          • Ronald Green

Hardly any? It’s documented the in one Miami precinct alone the voter turn out was 150%, almost all to the Democrats. Another Philadelphia Precinct with all the Republican observers thrown out of the voting hall, every vote cast was for Obama and the Democrats. Another woman in Utah, I believe, admitted to voting for Romney 6 times. Two women in Chicago admitted to and were convicted of voting fraud for voting multiple times for Obama. These are just a few of the list of voting fraud just in the last Election. This problem is far more pervasive than you want to admit. As to the campaign reform, it is desperately needed. And really 900 million dollars to require that every voter has a driver’s license or something similar, that is absolutely ridiculous and you know it.

      • ogama843

Me too, i wanna learn how it is more difficult for a minority to produce ID before voting than it is for me.

      • mike_in_kosovo

Except it doesn’t. Minority voter turnout actually INCREASED.

I have a liberal cousin who is always telling me I need to be more tolerant of other nationalities. He says this because I am critical of the job Obama has done as President. Which isn’t surprising, that’s the only real defense libs have of the pathetic excuse for a job Obama has done.

But that same liberal cousin always refers to any black people who speak out against the agenda the n-word.

Winkler as in Henry Winkler… and we wonder why this clown got elected. The bloody murdering yankee is worried about racism. There are not many black people in Minn. with it’s Russian mafia and European Nazis that control their state. The illegals don’t even want to move there, ever wonder why? Winkler is your atypical denigrating northern politican, he makes a great grand dragon of the MN chapter. I am southern born and bred where we might speak slowly in order to be polite and understood. Winkler just shoots off his mouth and expects to be forgiven by those outside of his district and state. I am still wondering about how goons like this allowed al franklin to become a US senator. It is not that I don’t like Yankees, I just can’t stand stupid people.

Sure, if you’ll do one for Michigan segregation. It’s there.

      • Silenttype78

Have you ever actually been to Mississippi? My guess would be no, but feel free to wow me with you real life experience.
It’s amazing! Along with indoor plumbing Mississippi is a lot like other parts of the U.S.
White and black people live in the same neighborhoods, shop at the same stores, attend the same religious services, take their kids to the same parks, and voluntarily spend time together!

Racism exists everywhere; that’s a sad fact of life. But acting like an entire large swath of the United States is incurably racist by default is exactly the kind of pig-headed, narrow-minded, self-centered thinking that goes hand in hand with the liberal Left and their attitude of “You commoners would probably starve to death if we weren’t there to hold your hands”.

If anyone’s “butting” their heads in the sand, it’s people like you who actually DO believe that the entire Southern US has remained static since 1865 and needs to be treated like they’re one jug of moonshine away from reigniting the Civil War.

        • mickeyco

Lin, Silent Type, MmePB L& Ronald- Nice, nice rebuttal. Thanks.

Again, proof please? I would like to see articles about this. Just because you think/believe it happens, doesn’t mean it has. Please posted links from credible news sources. You can do that, can’t you. Educate us. I want see sources.

      • WisconsinPatriot

Or…….you could GO to Mississippi and see for yourself.

        • rinodino

No thanks, saw a docu on the racism there, and this was from 2008, felt like I was watching something from the 1950s or earlier, being a minority I think I’m good out west, but thanks for the cool info.

          • Ronald Green

A trash talking, yella, liberal…. who would have thunk it.. Be careful there, you just might have your fantasy debunked. “I saw a ‘film’ and that’s all I gotta see” Where ever you go, you will find what ever you’re looking for… good or bad. The hard part is to go and just see with an open mind, but you’re too cowardly for that. But you’ll come here and pontificate about something that you know nothing about. What little respect I had for you is gone for good. You’re just another POS libtard.

          • rinodino

I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do now that I lost respect from the great Ronald McDonald …. I have to go evaluate my life, talk soon

What really offends me is the way people act like the Southern states haven’t changed at all in the 150 years since the Civil War and that, without legislation like the VRA in place, they would immediately put every black back in bondage.

    • Ronald Green

Yep and Paula Dean got canned after apologizing profusely for her past ‘indiscretions’. This azzclown will probably get re-elected.

    • WisconsinPatriot

……..40 years ago it was a word that was far too widely used. Would you rather she LIED? This dipstick just called a balck Supreme Court Justice an “uncle Tom”.
      HOW does that even compare?

Do these dumbass libtards think that we are still in the 1960s? Of course, they don’t care about anything except crying “Raaaaaaaaacist” to deflect any discussion of the real issue here. They should just lay on the floor in the fetal position and suck their little thumb. I actually feel sorry (not really) for these knee-jerk idiots.

  • kateorjane

WOW -Minn really elected a Rep who didn’t know that calling an African American an Uncle Tom is offensive?
Interesting that a woman with a cooking show gets publically flogged, ridiculed & fired for using the n word decades ago but a Congressman can refer to a SC Justice as an Uncle Tom today and all he has to do is go “oops – I didn’t know that was offensive.”

  • BorderLine Guy

The DFL will circle the wagons and get a media blackout here in MN. Not that it takes much when the weather is nice here. The “news” casts are 3 min of news and 19 min of weather, good or bad.

  • Love of Country

White, privileged, Democrats telling proud and successful black folks they’re not really black unless they completely relinquish their hard-earned right to actively participate in our nation’s long-cherished, two-party voting system is one of the most disturbing forms of racism I’ve ever seen ie because you’re black, you don’t get to choose. Unbelievable!

Someone should ask that a-hole (on camera) why he thinks trying to control black people is still so necessary and commonplace in today’s DNC.

  • GrandsonOGrumpus

Is anyone certain this joke represents 46A and it’s not simply his IQ?

To think he could wallpaper-over his bigotry by claiming ignorance bespeaks of not just a low-grade, rust-encrusted, flaccid & disorganized intellect— it also trumpets an arrogance of self-assumed, but baseless, superiority of herculean dimensions…

In other words, an average bottom-tier Progressive accidentally elected to something above the responsibility level of tollbooth duty or fair-grounds sweep.

    • mickeyco

Wow. You’re really pissed, aren’t you?

      • GrandsonOGrumpus

Please substitute “clean and articulate” for “Uncle Tom.” Watch the fur fly! Or… not!

  • Cappy Paxton

Uncle Tom was my hero in the story. I only can hope that when under half that adversity I can stand by my beliefs as he did. Since our society has once again changed the meaning to suit itself, I recognize “Uncle Tom” to be a derogatory remark. To me it means almost the opposite of what we’ve made it into being. Needless to say, I don’t and won’t call anyone an Uncle Tom … not without a whole lot of back story.

  • mickeyco

Thank God he’s not a Republican!

    • landaddy001

Well it does spare us all that feigned outrage and hypocrisy. Which isn’t all bad.

  • Karl Winrich

Just got to love how those ever “tolerant” liberals are the first ones to pull out the slavery and race cards when somebody doesn’t agree with them.

  • billiam

I guess rather than apologize for a racial slur, he choose instead to lie, falsely claiming that he didn’t know “Uncle Tom” is a racially derogatory term. I guess this makes him a racist liar.

    • mickeyco

      Can’t be. He’s a northern Democrat.

      • billiam

        And he’s no true Scotsman…

  • TocksNedlog

“I didn’t think it was offensive to suggest that Justice Thomas should be even more concerned about racial discrimination than colleagues.”
    — And you thought the best method of making that ‘suggestion’ was to publicly label him a race traitor? Your goal was to prompt him to “be even more concerned” by accusing him of not being concerned at all? As well as suggesting that the other members of the court (including the Wise Latina!) do not have cause to be equally concerned about racial discrimination?

Congratulations, Rep. Winkler. The Wild may have been eliminated during the first round of the playoffs, but you’ve managed to score a hat-trick of stupid: racist, race-baiter AND discriminator.

Congressman Winkler….it is time to turn in the old resignation!!!!

  • nickshaw

It’s always enlightening to hear racist lib’ruls talk about racism.
hey, if anyone, they know what they’re talking about!

  • Biggus_Footus

What a jackass. It is people such as Ryan that keep the racism cauldron bubbling, because it keeps them in power. The truth is that racism is a has-been cause celeb among most Americans. If it were not, Obama could never have been elected. Most Americans aren’t racists. In fact, they fall right in with Dr. King’s dream that people should be judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin. Most Americans don’t care about skin color, they care about people putting their shoulder to the wheel, pulling their own weight in life, and exercising good citizenship. But there’s too much money and too much power in the race industry to allow the notion to fade into the past where it belongs. So they keep it alive with asinine proclamations such as Ryan’s. What’s completely insane is that people keep electing these snot rags to positions of power.

  • Frustrated Teacher

Would someone inform this racist dolt that black people are NOT having their voting rights restricted anymore. In fact, if they vote for O, they can vote MULTIPLE times in each election. THIS man needs to lose HIS job over this or Paula Deen got screwed!

What a piece of racist crap from this poor excuse of a Rep. Unless you are on the liberal plantation then you are an uncle tom. Why do you people vote for a racist like this guy?

    1. Winkler is a Democrat.
    2. Democrats were slave holders in the pre-Civil war South.
    3. Democrats founded the KKK, and used them to terrorize blacks.
    4. Democrats “stood in the door” to block segregation after Brown v Board of Education.

    6. Winkler is a Democrat.

    7. Ergo, Winkler is a RACIST!!

What does a “sensitive” racist tweet look like? Love to know! We could have used your advice when the media spent nearly a week or so going nuts over somebody in the Tea Party supposedly yelling a racial epithet at a black congressman. What a classic diversion THAT was!

      • http://enria.org/ Voicedude

Right! Start a fight where none exists over something you incorrect think I said – Republican much? Thank you for pointing out the validity of my statement by reenacting it. Next time, try reading what someone SAID, not your interpretation of it…

Oh and by the way, the reason for this thread is to discuss the “insensitive tweet.” I’m staying on point. What’s YOURS? Couldn’t find the thread on the SCOTUS decision?

He didn’t know it was offensive? 0bama never heard any of Rev Wrights diatribes. Anthony Weiner’s twitter acct was hacked. Hilliary flew into Bosnia under intense enemy fire. A brief history of Democrats integrity.

  • LtColO

Just no WAY. Winkler was 15 when the Thomas hearings were news. There’s no way he could have missed the racial epithet used against Thomas then. A kid that makes it into Harvard couldn’t be that ill-informed…oh wait…
On top of it, he has a BA in History, right??

  • yebbid

If he didn’t know it was racist, how did he know there was debate about it & why it was debated? Google?

  • Sharon Jeanguenat

There isn’t an adult alive that doesn’t know that statement is offensive, especially after the past 2 presidential elections. If he’s that far out of the loop, maybe his constituents should recall him.

  • ThomasCollins1

“I did not understand “Uncle Tom” as a racist term, and there seems to be some debate about it. I do apologize for it, however.”

The excuses are generally worse than the original offense. I wonder which debate it is he’s referring to ?

  • rinodino

Unfortunately for Lyndon, those southern Dems decided to join another party

  • Garth Haycock

    Another swing and a miss.

  • CatHerder

Unfortunately for your implication, they’re mostly all dead.

  • autdrew4real

The republicans championed the civil rights bills while dems filibustered them. Why on earth would those racist dems switch to the party that just passed sweeping civil rights legislation? That makes zero sense for one & for two, the south was still voting dem until very recently. VERY recently. Check the stats of elections

    One Southern Democrat changed parties,

You just keep flailing, don’t you?

Prove it…where is you proof. Just because you say it/think it doesn’t make it correct. I want to see your credible, solid proof from actual sources.

  • mike_in_kosovo

Planning on ever explaining just *why* those hardcore racists would leave the party that filibustered the Civil Rights Act for the party that overwhelmingly supported it?

  • rinodino

And I guess they don’t have kids or relatives that believe any of that stuff either, because, it’s all good now, no racism down south, not at all. Sand meet stubborn big head

  • Stephen L. Hall

In some places they still vote, that’s allowed . . . they are Democrats.

  • CatHerder

We shape our own attitudes, those of us who grow up that is. You, not so much. Still peddling the same tired old line.

  • TocksNedlog

    Racism exists everywhere.
Actual, provable ‘voter suppression’ targeted at racial minorities? Mmm, not so much.

but apparently the north is a race “utopia”, right?
So, tell us why more blacks live in the South than in the North?

He really does like the abuse and assumes too much, but other than that and he’s a closest racist, and bigot, and libtard, and small minded….. he’s a really fine fellow.

  • Michael Anderson (WB)

And if you go through the list of reps who voted against the civil rights act you will find that only 4 democrats switched parties and one all but switched (worked to get Nixon elected, voted with -R but kept the -D). Quite a few who voted against the act went further into the Democrat party leadership.

The whole “Dixiecrat’s switch parties wholesale” mantra is a complete fabrication.

  • journogal

1994, wasn’t it? I think it was 1994 when southern states became true red states. In fact, I think the last election a few states have Republican state house and senate that haven’t been that way since Reconstruction.

  • Ronald Green

They tended to die off or retire rather than switch.

  • Michael Anderson (WB)

The claim has been that they switched parties and therefore the conservatives are the real racists. That claim is demonstrably false.

Wasn’t Jesse Helms S.C. (D) the last southern Dixicrat? And he died in office. I may be wrong about the name but I know who the guy was.

Nowhere is the divide between the races greater than here. I have spent time down south, and nowhere have I felt more like just another person. It is really NICE to not be obviously hated by any black person in the general vicinity. I spent time in restaurants and bars where the mix was almost ALWAYS 50/50 and never was it an issue. If my whole life was not in Wisconsin, I would move in a second. In my pic, I am covered in bees……but I assure you I am very caucasian. I am sure there are hateful folks of all races in the south, but there is nothing that compares to just being universally hated in your own home state! Blacks live down south because they are smart enough to know where they have it good.

  • WisconsinPatriot

    Garbage in, garbage out.

  • TexSizzle

My wife moved from Wisconsin to Texas when she was 20, and after living here for several years was shocked to realize how racist her father was. She has no desire to go back to Wisconsin, though she still refers to Milwaukee as “home”.

  • TexSizzle

I think it was Grand Kleagle Robert Byrd.

  • Ronald Green

Yeah, you may well be right. I never could keep names and faces straight.
