NYC deputy mayor sneers at concerns about anti-gun MAIG using tax dollars; Bonus: Gun-grabber slap-fight

Earlier this week, Ace of Spades HQ blogger John Ekdahl uncovered evidence that New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s gun-grabbing group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, was using city resources to host its website. “As a NYC taxpayer, I’m pissed,” wrote one city resident.

Ekdahl’s research raised a host of ethical and legal questions about whether NYC taxpayer dollars should support Nanny Bloomberg’s pet project, a tax-exempt 501(c)(4) like the ones targeted by the IRS.

Nothing to see here, move along, says New York City Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson.

Not just legal, but appropriate.

NYC Councilman Brad Lander, co-chair of the progressive caucus, disagrees. Delicious:

Wolfson sneered at the councilman’s concerns.

The city’s sponsorship of MAIG is so clearly “legal and appropriate” that the story was picked up by Politico and BuzzFeed.

Reporters and citizen journalists weren’t satisfied with Wolfson’s answers, but he continued to sneer at the concerns they raised.

It’s no longer midnight. We’re still waiting for the answer, Howie.

Nanny Bloomberg’s press secretary upped the petulant ante when he got in on the action.

LaVorgna bravely ran away before answering these tweets.

The Weekly Standard’s Jim Swift ran with the story and it was picked up by The Drudge Report.

More from Swift on the press secretary’s spin.

As Ekdahl notes, questions remain.

Is Web hosting really so expensive that Bloomie couldn’t fund it himself?

    • mickeyco

I thought Bloomie could afford about almost anything.

      • tjack

As a fellow member of the tribe I’d just like to ask you what part of Bloom and berg don’t you understand?

        • TocksNedlog

          Well, that was unnecessary.

        • Marcy Cook

Uh I don’t understand the Bloom part…but if you want to tell me all about the berg I’m all ears. Go for it, fellow tribesperson

      • Ken Alan Draper

you can afford almost anything if you can foist the cost of your pet projects onto the taxpayers. philantropist with other peoples money.

    • almarquardt

I don’t think Bloomberg sees a difference between the NYC servers and his own. As far as he’s concerned, he owns them both. The gist of it is, he saved his own money by using public tax dollars to fund his agenda, and he figured more people visit the NYC site than his own — thereby increasing exposure and possible donations to MAIG. It is yet another perfect example of the narcissism running rampant in government these days. I believe he believes that as mayor of NYC, he’s entitled.

    • the_bat

No it’s not. He could probably get the damn thing hosted for $50/month, or less, on a lot of commercial web hosting services.

      • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III… if he chooses them to host, he also gets DANICA PATRICK! But then again, I don’t think she resonates with HERR BLOOMBERG (SEIG HEIL!) or his Political Philosophy(ies)… #RightWard Jawamax 8<{D}

    • Ken Alan Draper

if he did that would require him to spend his own money, & scrooge mc quack isn’t about to spend his own money, not when the good people of NYC can foot the bill. after all if he spent his own money he might lose his ranking as one of the richest men in America, he can’t risk that now can he?

  • the_bat

    The arrogance of bureaucrats. Astounding!

  • mary kile

I find delightful that the elite journos are picking up this story which was uncovered by bloggers Ace and Ekdahl, slamming into their faces that the media is not doing their job. And if there’s a thing that is always clear is that in the Obama administration times ethics are a thing of the past.

  • Jack Deth

    Memo to Mr. Wolfson:

When you are caught digging a hole deeper than your height.

Getting a bigger shovel only makes you look more ridiculous.

Fully expect the site in question to be scrubbed clean or deleted by late tonight.

In the interim. Visit the site and carpet bomb it with questions as to why Mayor Bloomberg is breaking the law.

    • Jon

Wolfson is a veteran Clinton operative and ran Hillary’s 2008 presidential campaign. That means he has the “Never explain, never apologize” mindset wired into his DNA. You’re never going to get Howard to admit Bloomberg did anything wrong until the webpage is (quietly) taken off the NYC servers. Then he’ll say the mayor was planning to do it anyway and this is all old news.

  • CO2 Producer

So Bloomie’s stooges would say it’s A-OK for the next mayor to host the NRA’s site on the city’s servers. After all, the NRA is a 501(c)4.

I know, I know. I was being hypothetical.

    • Marcy Cook

Well now….depending in who wins…and since I live in NYC I think I’m going to have to support the NRA advertising on city servers. Now if the Bloomberger will back down on the anti-gun crap on the city servers then I’ll reconsider how I feel about the NRA.

  • tinker_thinker

    Good grief!

  • MissJames

PLEASE tell me the IRS tax exempt division is all over this . I mean,it should be,right?

    • TocksNedlog

      Yer funnie!

    • thetreyman

one would think but i wouldn’t count on it.

  • $27789750

Bloomie, and apparently his underlings, are entitled to do exactly as they please. How come we don’t all get that? s/

  • videosavant

You know, it should be SO EASY for Bloomberg to fix this. He just has to admit that he was wrong, attribute it to an oversight made in haste, move the site to a separate host, and cut a cheque to the city for (some generous multiple) of the estimated costs. He could even invite the city attorney to review what happened so that the public is assured that this was a mistake made in the heat of battle, not a matter of petty theft from the public purse.

But see, there’s a problem with that approach. Bloomberg is never wrong, and you can be damn sure he’s not going to publicly admit he was wrong about something like this that he is so ideologically and emotionally invested in.

And that refusal to acknowledge mistakes, more than anything else, is why he is a natural Democrat, despite his past Republican opportunism and current “Independent flag of convenience.”

  • TocksNedlog

What I’m getting from this story is that Bloomberg never went before the city council with a proposal to allow to host the MAIG site. Question is: Why not? Was he afraid that they would vote it down? Or is he just so arrogant — a strong possibility, given the deputy mayor’s attitude — that he thinks it’s perfectly acceptable to make a unilateral decision? It causes one to wonder about how many “executive orders” he’s issued during his tenure.

  • Sonya A. Willis

The snotty arrogance of Nannyberg and his acolytes is exactly why our country is in so much trouble. Using taxpayer money to fund their own agenda? Check. Being called on the carpet and basically telling everyone to go to h__? Check, check and double check.

  • TocksNedlog

Nothing unethical about using tax money to help fund the activities of a political action committee; no siree, Bob!

  • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

HERR BLOOMBERG (SEIG HEIL!)…The reason for EXTREME IMPEACHMENT! #RightWard Jawamax 8<{D} And the SAME for ALL HIS CRONIES!

  • froggy19510

He should take both of the guns he has in the picture put one barrel in each ear and pull the trigger. Too bad they are just toys.

    • Ken Alan Draper

fake plastic guns used to show people in judo classes how to get shot, mostly used anymore for showing off sighting lasers for pistols at gunshows.

  • Maxx

Well, well….another story the media has to be led by the nose to cover.

Mike Wallace is rolling in his grave at the sorry state of today’s “investigative” journalists, who by majority, have become nothing more than liberal political pinatas.

    • froggy19510

Maxx, I agree with your point. The media will not cover any story that is truly detrimental to Obama.

Mike wallace once said that if he was doing a story about an enemy patrol and
could warn our side about an attack he would not becauseit would change his story. Mike Wallace was a left-wing hack who would only do stories about
businesses and organizations run by conservitaves.

  • Stagester

I love it when libs get what they deserve.
