Weekend reading: Harry Reid schedules Monday vote on 1,170-page immigration bill

Here’s an idea: if Congress can’t get it together to build a fence, how about just dumping all the unread copies of the immigration reform bill along the border? Sen. John Cornyn, whose amendment mandating a 90 percent apprehension rate of illegals crossing the border was tabled on Thursday, tweets Friday evening that senators have just been presented with a 1,170-page bill to review for Monday’s vote. Earlier this week, the bill was said to weigh in at a whopping 24 pounds.

Hey, this is comprehensive immigration reform. Once this passes, the broken system is fixed for good, right?

Relax: we’ll have five days to read it and comment before the president signs it into law. He promised, remember?

  • TJ

The question will be even if they do read the bill will it be the right bill that is on the table or one that has hand written versions. Parts that was not voted on but still added or parts that where changed entirely after it was already voted on to be added in. Amendments that contradict other amendments.

    • Elaine

They can ruin any well intentioned bill with “amendments.” Why can’t they just vote the issue at hand, written in plain English, so everyone, including those voting on it, understand what’s in it for once?

  • GrannyAm

7yrs no day off del newspapers, now Senate wants to give my job to illegal aliens…NO!

    • Stephen L. Hall

      but . . . they’ll be legal now . . . you still won’t have a job, but . . .

Yah-huh. Like our opinions mean anything to anyone in Washington.

  • EDUCATEDPATRIOT

Again, sporting my “shocked” face. Reid is a D-bag.

  • Jim Polk

there is no reason on the face of the earth that a bill should be that big. They need to break it up into separate divisions that deal with different aspects of immigration and deal with it peace meal. if you will. There is no way a bill this big has been read by even those who created it. Washington DC is just ridiculous . . . and most of them act like children.

I remember when Cornyn voted yay for TARP in September 2008. I voted against him. I am prepared to vote against him again in 2014 if he votes for this POS. Why not start voting democrat if they pass it, they aren’t going to win another election that counts in the future.

You have to pass the immigration reform bill before you can find out we are now part of Mexico.

Can compare this to Health Bill Debacle. Congress: ‘We don’t have to read no stinkin’ Bill’. ‘Not going to effect us’.

  • Elaine

This really pisses people off Reid! You don’t bring ANY bills to the floor for years so you can blame what you label “the do nothing congress.” Now this has to be shoved down our throats Obamacare style? READ THE DAMN BILL first. Did you MORONS learn nothing? Anyone who votes for this should be booted out of office!

I guess Congress is into just passing SOMETHING, anything, to try and suck up to the hispanic vote. It’s ironic that Romney could have gotten 70% of the Hispanic vote and he still would have lost. When are Republican RINOs going to come to grips with the fact that they are only going to start winning elections again when they stand for something and stick to conservative principles? If amnesty didn’t work for Reagan, why will it work now?
