#RoyalGorgeFire: 3,800 acres destroyed, Royal Gorge bridge threatened, but ‘intact’ [photos, video]

The Royal Gorge Fire is one of four active wildfires blazing in Colorado. It has destroyed 3,800 acres and several structures. (As Twitchy told you earlier tonight, the Black Forest Fire is raging near Colorado Springs and 2,500 homes have been evacuated.)

The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park are among the state’s most scenic and historic landmarks. The bridge is the world’s highest suspension bridge. Reports earlier tonight raised fears that the bridge had burned.

But at a press briefing this evening with fire public information officer Greg Goodland, the official word was that it had been threatened, but may yet be “intact” — although the caveat “We don’t know” was also attached.

Fingers crossed.

A DC-10 tanker arrived this evening and has been making water runs.

Twitchy will continue to monitor and update. Stay safe, Colorado readers.

    During the early 80’s I used to go to the Royal Gorge Bridge twice a year just to take in the beauty.

    Why are there so many fires in Cali?

  • William J. Miller

    That would be the 2nd major landmark that I would have stepped foot on, and been destroyed (World Trade Center, NYC). Please stay safe, defenders of the Royal Gorge, and all Coloradans.

    Royal Gorge is among my TOP-3 Tourist spots in Colorado (‘tho I haven’t been out that way since the late seventies); the other two are Central City Gold mining town, and Bear Lake at Estes Park. Has anyone else ever rode the Cable car down the side of the Canyon? That was awe-inspiring! #RoyalGorge #CanonCity Jawamax 8<{D}
