Guardian identifies NSA source as 29-year-old Edward Snowden

The Guardian has identified 29-year-old Edward Snowden as the source of its story revealing the NSA’s surveillance.

Understandably, some will still have questions.

  • Clayton Grant

The same people who lionize Bradley Manning will be along to condemn Mr Snowden with the same ferver.

    • CatHerder

      No doubt.

    • Stone Bryson

While you are right about the progressive militants in the US, we might be pleasantly surprised by others. Anonymous has already thrown its support behind Snowden, and others appear to be following suit.

While I share your belief when it comes to a majority of our own leftists, I sincerely hope some will turn.

      • Ben Bollman

The low info lefties who don’t know what they actually believe will turn on this issue at least but the next time a Republican votes to defund an entitlement program or public union it will be time to go back to loving Obama.

        • Stone Bryson

Undoubtedly so, Ben. They do seem have a serious case attention defi– Squirrel!

    • Jeremy

yeah that is a safe bet to make.

  • DLago

I’m pretty sure the endgame on this one is outright repeal of the Patriot Act without questions about the privacy abuse it self. NSA gets thrown under the bus, and Rs have no choice to go along the the repeal, Obama comes out smelling like a rose.

  • Richard Wayne

Good Luck to him. Pretty brave move on his part. Thanks for exposing yet another reason why our government needs to be brought to task and have its powers limited. Time for the people to exert themselves as boss over the bureaucracy (peacefully.).

    • Squirrel!

I am also thankful to Mr. Snowden. Proves there are still people out there who have more than self interest & preservation at heart.

    • V the K

I have no doubt that within three days, we will have reports that he is a heroin-addict pedophile con artist…. and probably a racist too.

  • stevearizona

This whistleblower was reporting the abuse of power by Obama….the Patriot Act isn’t the problem, but the tyrant abusing it is.

    • Richard Wayne

Perhaps. It would be nice if we had politicians with a sense of honor and respect, but I think that is a bit naive on our part. Better to limit their powers than trust their judgment. Why can’t we have more narrow metadata for them to sort through, you know, data that comes from probable cause?

    • stuckinIL4now

And it’s not just the Patriot Act he’s abusing.

    • Rightturn

Seeing as the Patriot Act has allowed for President Obama to do this, the same as it had allowed for the last president to do this exact same thing, the problem most definitely includes the Patriot Act.

  • stevearizona

“The lies I told you in 2008 and 2012 are not the lies I want you to believe today. The lies I really want you to believe are the lies I’m telling you right now!”

    – President Barack Obama

    • stuckinIL4now

Until the lies he tells us tomorrow serve his new nefarious purposes better.

  • stevearizona

Imagine that. Americans who think they have the right to privacy and the freedom to say what they want, journalists who think they can report wrongdoing and violations of the Constitution.

What do the Liberals think this is, a democracy or something?

  • TJ

There is a difference from what other Whistle blowers have done and this source. Other gave data that was classified. He gave information that there is a classified program to get that information from everyone and no raw data.

    • NRPax

My only problem is him fleeing the country, especially to a place controlled by China.

      • CatHerder

I thought he was in England?

        • NRPax

          Snowden fled to Hong Kong.

          • CatHerder

Saw it on the re-read, thanks.

          • Squirrel!

Hong Kong is a different world from the rest of China. Englad just returned it to China in recent years. Hong Kong runs on capitalism & does well (China doesn’t want to change it), but that’s the extent of my knowledge.

          • Bemani Dog

He just popped up in Iceland. That’s where he’s seeking asylum. Makes sense, it’s where Bobby Fisher ended up.

          • NRPax

Do you have a link on that? Not to be rude; I just haven’t found any article that mentions him being in Iceland.

      • GaryMc

Hong Kong is not the same as China. Hong Kong is the most economically free place on earth and it has a great deal of personal freedom. Hong Kong is more American than America.

        • NRPax

It still begs the question: Why flee the country? If you’re Speaking Truth To Power, why run to an area that our enemies live in?

For now, I’m withholding further commentary until more information comes out.

          • GaryMc

Hong Kong is the enemy? I wish we would copy Hong Kong. They are what America once was.

That said. I am holding out judgement. It is possible this guy isn’t a good guy and it is likely that he should have handled it differently.

          • NRPax

Hong Kong is the enemy? Never said that. But do you honestly think that the Chinese don’t have intelligence agents in Hong Kong right now?

And I’d like to know more about how he handled things before going public. There are a lot of resources for reporting ethical concerns and legal issues that keep you anonymous.

          • Bathing Suit Area

You saw what’s happened to Bradley Manning, right?

          • NRPax

Let’s see…Breanna Manning stole thousands of documents at random, copied them onto CDs and put the information out there on account of being a gay man with gender identity disorder who was angry about don’t ask/don’t tell and who had broken up with his boyfriend.

This is considerably different and my question about whether or not Snowden reported anything still stands.

  • stevearizona

    Dear Mr. President,

We have been trying to destroy your constitution and freedom for years. Only with your help have we been successful. We did not like the 4th Amendment your Bill of Rights as you call them. You and your FBI have helped us more than bin-Laden ever could. We ask that you keep up the good work on our behalf.

In Allah we trust. Your friends, al-Qaeda

  • Stone Bryson

Risking his life… his fortune… his sacred honor. So many of us repeat these words, so few of us truly live by them.

At this very moment? Gutsiest son-of-bitch on Earth…

    • Clayton Grant

    • stuckinIL4now

      Heroic, too.

  • LeighLeigh

What I find interesting: This guy talks to a UK News Agency, but not one from the US…..even he knows that the US Media would have turned him in, instead of giving him a forum in which to air his dirty laundry….how sad that the MSM has degraded themselves to this level.

  • goldwater89
  • Sonya A. Willis

Sorry but I’m not buying this guy for one moment. A 29 year old CONTRACTOR with the NSA had access to this kind of intel? The NSA has been a highly secretive organization that most people had never heard about. Somehow they are contracting out their work to a consulting firm?

Is this guy a highly skilled cryptographer? That’s what they do at the NSA is to break codes and gather intel. Booz Allen and Dell are conduits of cryptography?

    Red flags are everywhere.

    • Roto

Contractors can do the exact same work as Govt employees at all levels and clearances. No flags at all just because he was a KTR. But from the reports that he only has experience in IT security & as a Sys. Admin. (<3 mos with BAH), he probably only knew PRISM at the system concept level. Sounds akin to "The Falcon & the Snowman"

  • HARP2

Just because it is a law, it dosen`t mean it`s constitutional.

If you were frisked every time you left the house, just because you
“might” have something illegal on you, it is against the 4th amendment
and the Supreme Court MUST strike it down.

This so called Law is the same thing.

  • 47Percenter

He is tea-party scum…..we know he was Ron Paul supporter and Ron Paul is the Granddaddy of the Tea-party he founded it in 2007
