Science: Democrat Rep. Raúl Grijalva borrows lab coat, makes ‘best pro-Keystone XL video ever’

We’re used to hearing that Republicans are the anti-science party, but that criticism is especially hard to take in light of Rep. Raúl Grijalva’s new video, warning of the dangers of building the Keystone XL pipeline. We’ve also been assured that conservatives don’t understand the nuances of metaphor, but there’s just something about Grijalva playing politics while wearing a “borrowed lab coat” and pretending to be a scientist that makes you miss Al Gore’s relatively sophisticated hucksterism.

The video’s so bad, in fact, that the National Republican Congressional Committee is urging people to view it, calling it a “must watch.” Spoiler: the rocks sink.

  • Catchance

Rock also beats scissors. Clearly the Keystone pipeline is a bad, bad, idea.

    • ValueEngring

This nitwit literally thinks they will be moving tar sand rocks through the pipeline. He and Hank Johnson (D) need to form a think tank.

      • trixiewoobeans

        I “think” it will “tank”.

        • ValueEngring

but they could go island tipping together.

          • trixiewoobeans

As long as they’re on said island when it tips.

As long as they’re on said island when it tips.

      • muckraker

It would have to be a sink tank. Get rid of the lab coat. This guy needs a straitjacket.

        • ValueEngring

he wouldn’t have to borrow one either.

      • Riley Secrist

        More like a sink tank.

  • waltermitty2012

Grijalva won by a very slim margin last year. Here’s to a better outcome in 2014.

    • TocksNedlog

I wish that was true, but he won re-election by 21 points last year, and it’s looking like he will be facing the same challenger next year. Gabby Mercer is a solid conservative, and if she avoids making any major gaffes (an area where she failed last time) then she might make it interesting; but probably not enough to win.

      • waltermitty2012

Sorry, my bad. It was 2010 that was the close race.

I saw the same scribblings on a visual aide introducing old episodes of ‘Pinky and the Brain’. Except Pinky cleverly added a “THX 1138” at the bottom of the visual aide!

If any Democrat thinks Keystone is a bad idea. It must, by liberal ass backwards logic be a good idea!

  • Clayton Grant

He challenged me and I love a challenge. So, I borrowed a blood-splattered lab coat, filled a beaker with water and then, not having any oil sands handy, I just poured a little olive oil into the water. It floated! I kid you not! The oil floated! Then I carefully skimmed off the oil, added a little balsamic vinegar and ate it on a salad. It was delicious!

          Ha for him it would.
Could you imagine the the conversation between him and Hank “Guam” Johnson?

i thought they were going to pump oil into the pipe, not rocks? we don’t seem to have a need for a rock pipeline, but we do need an oil pipeline. could this congressman be as dumb as hank, guam flipper, johnson?

  • Guest

    What the…??

  • b_truit

Rocks sink…who’da thunk? Also…people this is why you vote for anything other than a liberal. Now Where is my lab coat…

  • http://swedeworld.wordpress.com/ swede

Should have Raúl do a lab coat vid for the coming attempt at Cardio Barrycare Resuscitation.
Rocks sink so we MUST have Obamamma-care. Bullet proof logic.

  • TJ

Sending rocks in the pipeline. He might have just invented a new power source just dump some solid tax in your gas tank and not bother dissolving them to flow. One does not send gravel in a pipeline you send it by trains. Send the tar oil by train in gravel hoppers and not tankers.

He’s blinded me with science, er, I mean, stupidity.

  • tjp77

This is just priceless. If I were running against him in the next election I’d just show this video 24/7. No other argument needed.

    • TocksNedlog

As someone whose place of work is located within Raúl Grijalva’s district I have to tell you, the electorate there is … not all that bright.
For evidence, I offer . . . well, they’ve elected Raúl Grijalva SIX TIMES for criminy’s sake!

  • vetgal1970

It totally pi$$es me off that someone as dumb as this (and the people who voted for him) can go around calling ME stupid. He should be barred from voting on the pipeline at all since he has clearly demonstrated that he knows less than nothing about it. That should be the new standard ” OK, before we vote on bill X, here’s a pop quiz to see if you know ANYTHING pertinent to the topic.”

Mayflower, Arkansas? His own map at the beginning of the video doesn’t show the Keystone XL pipeline anywhere near Arkansas! Also, in his fantasy world of piping tar sand rocks, cleaning up a spill would be easy: the rocks could be dredged or just left alone since the oil is trapped and wouldn’t contaminate the waterway.

So . . . logically, if Raúl’s brain weighs the same as a rock, then that means it will sink in water; and, therefore. . . .

    A dunce! A DUNCE!!!

Did you see her husband’s firm was just awarded the contract to sell “surplus” post offices across the country”

Did you see that another one her husband’s companies was just awarded the $1B contract to construct the first segment of the CA “high speed” rail project using federal tax dollars?

And all that luck he had landing billions of contracts for DoD projects while Dianne was Chair of the Senate Defense Appropriations Committee.

Move along – nothin’ to see here

      • Jim Denney

Yeah, she & hubby really ought to be in jail. SMH.

  • AMSilver

And here I thought the environmental “problem” with the Keystone pipeline was the possibility of a leak which would cause oil to seep into the ground, seeing as how the pipeline is largely landlocked….. And if the pipe ruptured and the rocks spilled out onto the ground, then… oh, bother. Grijalva didn’t do an experiment showing what would happen if rocks spilled onto solid ground. I’m not sure what would happen then, but it must be horrible!

    • in_awe

I think Dyson has the solution.

    • Ken Alan Draper

Yeah because liquid oil is so much easier then shoveling up rocks………..Wait a minute! LOL! sending rocks through the pipeline, too funny. would be loud as hell.

  • Abiss

We really need to find a way to tax ‘stupid’ in this country. Beyond ‘lottery tickets’ I mean…

        • BeeKaaay

No resemblance. Muppets are far more intelligent than the typical leftwingwacko :)

  • Stormzeye

How does an ignoramus like Grijalva get elected except by a constituency of ignoramuses. A closed loop of ignorance……pathetic.

    • JustLikeAnimals

The same LIVs that put that pipe-toking crackhead in our White House.

    • TocksNedlog

Seeing as how I work, in retail, in Grijalva’s district, there are a lot of things I could say about his constituency; I deal with them face-to-face every day. But, rather than compose an essay (or go on an extended rant) let me just say this:
Most of them are hardworking family people; many of whom still struggle, however, due to large family sizes (definitely a cultural thing) and/or a lack of education.
There’s also a significant percentage of the population that (for lack of a better descriptor) just don’t try; or, at any rate, don’t seem to try very hard. There’s a strong cycle of government dependency among — I would estimate — a third of the electorate. Even some of those that are doing okay probably credit Grijalva for their comfort level.

      • Stormzeye

It sounds like his constituency don’t have the time and /or the inclination, let alone the understanding, to parse issues relating to good governance and how such things effect their lives. In short, they are good but ignorant folks…….the foundation of the Democrat Party.

  • BeeKaaay

Leftwingwackos always deny science when it comes to abortion and environmentalism….anything for Marxism.

  • JustLikeAnimals

Okay. Full disclosure. I AM a scientist with advanced degrees in Physics and Astrophysics. After careful consideration of “Raul’s” video presentation and, having weighed all his evidence and analyses, I can confidently conclude that….WTF!!!???

    GO SCIENCE!

  • in_awe

I just left this message on his petition to President Obama:

“I was convinced by Rep. Grijalva’s video demonstration that rocks sink in water to now oppose the Keystone XL pipeline with my whole heart and sole. His further revelation that Cornell University only counted the number of pipeline workers rather than all new jobs created by a new refinery and businesses that support it directly and the local businesses that provide products and services to the workers was mind-boggling. We should oppose the pipeline for that reason alone.

I suggest you kick-out the new guy with all those science degrees and stuff you just appointed as head of the Dept of Energy and appoint Rep. Grijalva instead. He brings a level of insight and knowledge along with an ability to express it that is gaining strength in your administration – he’ll be great!”

  • http://thenewsofthefutur.blogspot.com/?m=1 Thomas Faddis

How is the pipeline going to move thousands of ‘gallons’ of rocks?! He is correct about one thing, he is Not a scientist and…common sense should tell us if He is against it, we should probably build it ASAP!

Just think if some Republican had done a ‘stem cell’ video like this it would be played on a loop until 2014 elections with commentary that impugned every Republican and every conservative as anti-science.
