CBS sportswriter: Only ‘Uncle Tom’ Native Americans not offended by Redskins’ name

CBS Sports’ “NFL insider” Mike Freeman has a problem with the Washington Redskins: their name.

Earlier this week, ten members of Congress wrote to the Redskins’ owner, the NFL commissioner, and others, urging a team name change. Feeling the P.C. spirit, Freeman saw fit to pen a ridiculous piece of his own, suggesting that “Redskins” is on par with the N-word and that Native Americans not sharing his outrage are “Uncle Tom American Indians.”

Seriously?

From Freeman’s screed:

If the Redskins were called the N-Words, then all of these hypocritical African-American Washington fans, who back the use of Redskins, would suddenly understand if the team was called the Washington N-Words.

So, from now on, let’s call them that, and pull from our rectums that the word is used to honor blacks.

Sure, there will be some Uncle Tom American Indians who will say Redskins honors them, just like there were some Uncle Tom blacks who once didn’t mind being called colored.

Ugh. He went there.

For a guy professing to be concerned about ethnic groups’ feelings, he sure is good at insulting perceived race traitors. What’s up with that?

Put down the race card, Mike, and stick to football.

Doesn’t anyone comprehend what ‘Uncle Tom’ signifies?

Reasons why anyone should be proud to be called an Uncle Tom:
      1. Harriet Beecher Stowe made Uncle Tom the Christ like figure in Uncle Toms Cabin
      2. Uncle Tom’s character was modeled on Christian nonresistance
      3. Uncle Tom refused to give up the location of two runaway slaves to his master and was killed for it

Need I go on?  This term has been hijacked by the left and they have destroyed what should be known in literature as a great man

These days it’s nothing but a convenient slur to throw at any Black person who shows a predilection to “things White people might like”, especially in the realms of political or social conservatism. Allen West, Clarence Thomas, RGIII come to mind. RGII tweeted about this issue a few weeks ago, talking about the tyranny of PC-ness. Oliver Willis implored him not to do so. Does anyone but me remember Disney’s “Song of the South?”

Uncle Remus (played by James Baskett) was the old slave that passed on the stories of his generation (Brer Rabbit and the like) to both black and white children sitting at his knee, accompanied by animated characters. This was (and still is) one of my favorite movies from childhood. I didn’t know that I was supposed to be offended by it until I went looking for it on DVD several years ago, and was told how horrible it was, as seen by polite society. I found it at last, and it sits on my bookshelf, as both a memory of happy childhood, and a reminder that no matter how seemingly innocent something is, it can be held up as a item of scorn and contempt by certain groups that could find offense in anything.

When naming a sports team, the tradition is to pick something that is supposed to strike fear in it’s opponents, but “The Washington War Like Indigenous People” just doesn’t have the same fierce ring to it.

But if we’re going to be fair about it, we need to change the name of the Cowboys (self explanatory regarding who’s offended), Chargers (offensive to people that use credit cards), Cardinals (offensive to Catholics), Patriots (offensive to members of the Tea Party), 49er’s (offensive to Gold Diggers), Raiders (offensive to Somali Pirates), Hawks (Offensive to Fuller Brush salesmen), etc etc.

The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) would like a word with you… calling all their supporters “Uncle Toms” isn’t sitting well with them.

It’s not compelling. Not unless you agree the Minn Vikings should change their names because SOME Scandinavian Americans would be offended, since they could argue a Viking is a stereotype of a long haired blonde rapist pillager. See how this works? No, you do not have a right to be offended and if so, keep it to yourself, but you do not get to ruin businesses based on PC amok childish pseudo-moral high ground arguments, since anybody or group could do so with almost any team name. I do not hear anyone of color bashing the Vikings, and until I do I will not even listen…
