Sen. Rand Paul zings President Obama: PowerPoint presentations are not due process

The world turned fully upside down today when Code Pink’s Medea Benjamin heckled President Obama during a national security speech, completing the 360-degree turn begun when Code Pink presented Republican Sen. Rand Paul with a hand-made thank-you valentine. Paul had won appreciation from both sides of the political aisle for his filibuster demanding Attorney General Eric Holder clarify the Obama administration’s policy on targeting American citizens with drones. As much as the president likes to stay above the dirty business of the war on terror, Paul and others insist he display leadership on the issue of targeting American citizens.

Paul posted a brief press release in response to the president’s speech:

I’m glad the President finally acknowledged that American citizens deserve some form of due process. But I still have concerns over whether flash cards and PowerPoint presentations represent due process; my preference would be to try accused U.S. citizens for treason in a court of law.

Paul’s stance on due process continues to flabbergast liberals who find themselves defending a rather “hawkish” President Obama and, by extension, George W. Bush. Much as MSNBC host Touré did, Media Matters’ Oliver Willis has come out of the closet as a drone program supporter, even under Bush.

Whatever it might have accomplished aside from allowing him to spike the Osama bin Laden football one more time, the president’s speech failed to settle the issue.

the presentation was prepared long time ago. Jay Carney will confirm it

I still don’t get why using drones overseas is bad. If you can accomplish a mission without endangering the lives of US soldiers, then I think you should. But I’m definitely against using them on US soil, especially if you’re talking about targeting US citizens for what’s basically assassination.

    • dagnytaggart

But it’s ok to fly them into another country without permission sometimes, and risk accidentally killing foreigners? I’m all for killing bad guys, but this sounds like something that will create much bigger problems than it solves, not to mention the whole due process thingy.

If we were flying manned aircraft in the places drones are and dropping bombs things would be much different…except, in reality, there is no difference.

        • FranklinWasRight

So, we drop bombs on American citizens using manned aircrafts as well? Who knew?

Um, Cy wasn’t talking about Americans citizens, he was talking about during war. Drones shouldn’t be used against American citizens the same way jet fighters, tanks, and bombs shouldn’t either but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t use them against our enemies.

    • Squirrel!

You should go to Youtube & search “drone strikes.” We’re killing & maiming many innocents overseas.

  • Red Fred

    Because, due process

  • Laconic

So, we can kill Americans citizens overseas, but despite knowing where they are, we can’t kill or arrest the enemy combatants (formely known as terrorists) who killed Ambassador Stevens, and three more Americans because we don’t have enough evidence for a CIVIL trial? , ok, gotcha.

summary;due process for Muslim Terrorists, drone process for US citizens

Yo. @twitchyteam. Spam. disqus, whomever. shit. ass.

  • Time Bomb

This is a very slippery slope. Would I rather have an unmanned aircraft dropping hate on these D- bags, instead of our troops putting their life on the line? Abso-Fucking-lutley!!! On the flip side, given how we know this administration targets political rivals, could there be a drone circling “treasonous, co-conspirator” James Rosens house?

    • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

We should treat drones just like any weapon of war including jet fighters and tanks: Use against the enemy, not against our citizens.

      • Liz

You had better stay inside your bunker and never leave the US because I don’t think that you have an florescent tattoo on your a$$ that says “I am an American citizen”.

        • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

Well, unless I plan on hanging out with terrorists overseas I probably won’t have to worry.

Using drones to kill people in a sovereign country is an act of war by any standard. No, I’m not thrilled with the idea of a ground war anywhere, but unless the situation is dire, this one should be behind glass with a sign: “In Case of Emergency”. For example, if we had used drones to take out OBL, I could get behind that considering that he was enemy #1 at the time. But to merely take out terrorists in general? And Americans in particular?

No. Because I don’t like the idea of acting warlike with countries and not having the balls to declare war. If there is anything that would piss off another country, it’s this.

And I don’t care which political party is in charge.

  • vanbratch

@JayJoyce “It really puzzles me why #Obama wants to try foreign terrorists in #American courts and wants to kill #American citizens” — I’ve had that question burning in my mind as well. It’s beyond…I have no words to describe how troubled it makes me.

    • JustLikeAnimals

NEWSFLASH!!! =========> Obama hates America and Americans.

  • Devon Dibley

Americans killed in Drone attacks under Obama = 4

Total number of foreign terrorists waterboarded (still living) under Bush = 3

  • j p

And how would we feel if China had their own drones flying over US soil?

    • JustLikeAnimals

The same as we’d feel if Russia was flying nuclear bombers over US soil?
Oh wait. They already did that……twice this year…..and we did nothing.

Obama is weakening this country, from the inside out.
