Occupy CPS holding vigil for children ‘killed’ by Rahm Emanuel, school board

Do they teach the meaning of hyperbole in the Chicago Public Schools? In March, Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis declared Rahm Emanuel the “Murder Mayor” and accused him of “murdering public services” and “murdering our ability to maintain public sector jobs.” And tonight, protesters will hold a vigil for the children “killed” by the mayor and the school board.

As Twitchy reported, protesters began marching Sunday with signs reading, “Rahm’s racist school closings spill student blood.” If there’s anything worth protesting, it’s the abysmal quality of Chicago’s public schools, despite teachers earning $76,000 per year on average (the second highest in the nation).

Well, as long as the protesters keep things civil, it’s all good. A drum circle should make things right.

For its part, the Chicago Board of Education says that closing 50 underutilized school buildings will allow the city to reallocate public funds to provide air conditioning in every classroom, upgraded Internet bandwidth, and iPads for all students in grade 3–8, among other improvements. At least one protester likens the school board’s vote to attempted genocide, though.

It’s all about the unions, you know. These kids will have other schools they go to. This is the dumbest thing I’ve seen from union leeches.

apparently I’m not up to speed, but what is the purpose of a drum circle, except to annoy the adults?

I just want to bang on the drum all day

      • E Mims

Exactly. Only they can find a correlation between closing underutilized schools and killing children.

      • Jen

i’m sorry but my brain does not work as theirs do …. the correlation for me is not there

Ah…Hahahahaha… spewed my mouthful of water!

    • robcrawford2

See, in Chicago you’re not allowed to investigate or prosecute REAL murders, because that would eliminate too many of their core voter base — the street gangs. So they call everything and anything else “murder”.

Once you realize that Chicago is run by and for the street gangs, it all makes sense.

They are just stooges for the teachers union.

      • bonnieblue2A

Not very good stooges either since they are not protesting Obama’s appointment of CPS Board member Penny Pritzker to head the Commerce Dept. .
I note a surprising lack of law enforcement in the photos compared to those present at yesterday’s Tea Party protests against the #IRS. Wonder why? (/sarc.)

    • Jeremy

They are just stooges for the teachers union.

    • GrindingMills

Outside of the union protests (which are self serving and obvious), the main critique of the school closings, from parents, is that children are going to have to cross enemy gang territory to get to their new schools, which is supposedly dangerous.

      • Squirrel!

That’s very sad. Why can’t Chicago do something about their gang problem? Guessing the people would need to elect competent leaders first. Maybe there will be a plan to get children to school safely?

        • GrindingMills

Unfortunately, electing competent leaders is only a slice of the problem. The options for children are getting a very substandard education and have trouble finding jobs, or joining a gang and dealing, which honestly seems like a decent decision if you want to make money. In my humble opinion, the only chance to save the problem is for massive onshoring and job creation. Sure it’s related to elected officials, but there’s a lot of winds that need to blow the right way to get it done.

        • robcrawford2

The aldermen are chosen by the gangs. The aldermen, in turn, funnel taxpayer money to the gangs (look up some of the “violence prevention” programs in Chicago) *AND* make sure the gangs don’t have to risk one of their victims being armed.

And note that the parents are worried about their kids crossing through RIVAL gang territories. In other words, the parents are gang members themselves.

      • Kimihiro Watanuki

That is something I haven’t heard anyone come out and say, yet. Then the parents need to put pressure on the mayor to address gang violence.

        • Squirrel!

Yep! It sounds like they have good intentions with the idea of closing the schools they are & providing quality tools to the kids for their educational needs, but sounds like children will be put in harm’s way by moving them to other schools. This post made more sense to me after seeing GM’s comments. Chicago seriously needs to handle up on their gang problem. Totally ridiculous!

  • http://www.common2cents.org/ Soulphoenix

This is what ignorance run amok looks like. This demonstration has NOTHING to do with kids and EVERYTHING to do with teacher paychecks. Karen Lewis is a clear and present danger to common sense in Chicago’s schools. She wants more teachers, more union dues, and more power, real-world budgets be damned.

By the way, most studies on the impact of smaller class sizes find no positive impacts on student performance. The biggest predictor of student performance is the QUALITY OF THE TEACHERS, which CANNOT be ensured when you can’t ever discipline or fire the bad teachers.

Teachers union leadership is killing our kids – THAT is the fact of the matter.

    • Kimihiro Watanuki

Bingo! Lewis is a danger to children. She could care less if they learned anything.

    More Hyperbole?!? Let me try!:

When I first put an American Indian in chains, my happiness rose to levels beyond lynching anyone with a tan. It was 1985, I was listening to Duran Duran. The influence was easily attributable.

I wondered why ALL men and women ‘of color’ weren’t shining my pewter, lest the buckles upon my shoes. Placing a needle upon a record wasn’t a job I wanted to do. That was best left to Mexicans.

When 1990 turned the conversation to: “We should let those coloreds go”, I affirmed in the the negative. I was entrenched in the (D)emocratic view that “Paul Byrd would be a good leader.” -His reputation as “Grand Kleegle” was beyond reproach.

The music scene was in Seattle. “Grunge” had taken over my life and was quickly killed by Courtney Love. Liberal. Literally.

    -She killed Cobain. Bet.

When I turned to Jesus, He told me that surveillance of all Americans was going to be “cool”. I asked Him, “Why?” …and he only answered with a *twinkly* thumbs-down. He didn’t like it, but he smiled and drifted away.

After that, I was thinking. I said to myself: “Self!” …I said. “Self! We can do better!” I was adamant and I would not take “no” as an answer.

“As a Conservative”, I said to myself, “I should stop my holding-down of all peoples for my own amusement!”

    …that’s when I knew I was a Conservative Libertarian.

I then began my campaign against all things “bivalve”. Fuck Mollusks.
…The hyperbole, at this point, had gone too far. I needed to see reality. I’d read a couple of books entitled: “Liberal Fascism” -and “The Joy of Hate”.

-I settled down for some sleep. My World had been discovered for the time-being. There were no more “electable liars” who wanted to take away my rights.

    …I dream this dream today.

    -But I could be wrong.

    Thanks Beer!

  • Junie3

If Chicago schools havent taught their thugs how to carry a bucket tune yet, they need to close their schools. This is just outrageous in today’s world!
