Rupert Murdoch: IRS scandal ‘makes perfect case for flat tax and abolition [of] all deductions’

As tweeters pointed out, however, most donations to 501(c)(4) groups already are not tax-deductible.

How, then, would implementing a flat tax or abolishing deductions prevent the targeting of conservative 501(c)(4) applicants?

  • Michael Anderson (WB)

The scandal makes the perfect case for abolishing the IRS.

    • Michael Morris

Yes, but do you know how hard it is to disband a government agency? It just doesn’t happen.

DO you know how hard it was to get Apollo 13 back to earth with the astronauts alive?

DO you know how hard it was to execute the Normandy Invasion?

Not to get all idealistic on you but Americans never give up.

      • Angie

It’s easy — you stop funding it.

Of course, that would mean the end to $100,000 + bonuses for agency heads as “payola,” less opportunities for nepotism job placement & fewer avenues for pols to make money feeding on the government teat, so in *that* sense it is unlikely to happen. But hard? No. It’s not.

      • IceColdTroll

You are quite correct. It took some doing back in 1776.

    • $30423294

      Exactly on point!

Murdoch isn’t saying that eliminating 501(c)(4) will stop totalitarian abuse.

He is saying that a radical downsizing of the IRS will stop totalitarian abuse.

The reason IRS is a massive oppressive beast is that the tax code itself is a bloated chthulu-like beast..

He made a spot-on big-picture point and was responded to with wonkish nit-picking about tax code which is very depressing.

      • FeralFemale

Liked — specifically for your use of the phrase ‘wonkish nit-picking”
I understood what he meant. You are right, it was a big picture point. The IRS is a corrupt and abusive agency. Get rid of it. A flat tax with no deductions would eliminate the need for such an agency.

  • milletime810

don’t we already know that Rupert Murdoch doesn’t know jack about U.S. politics?

edit: fwiw I am all for a flat tax and getting rid of ALL deductions

  • Allen Paul

If Mr. Murdoch meant removing exemptions instead of deductions, then he might have a case.

To just “change out” the various department head people, and the minions, middle minions is an absolute farce.
We deserve it “to be different”, in the way the Treasury Department/IRS collects and confiscates our hard earned taxpayer dollars.

  • People Corporation

It makes perfect sense on why the IRS database needs deleted and the bulding sold at auction.

  • TocksNedlog

In his sentiment, if not his facts, Rupert is on the right track.

  • goldwater89

Murdoch is correct. Russia has a 13% Flat Tax and almost no debt.

“Public debt per person – Russia $891 (8.5% of per capita income according to 2010 World Bank Figures)

United States $29,053 (61.5% of per capita income according to 2010 World Bank Figures)”

“Funny how the Russians and Chinese figured out that class-warfare ideology doesn’t work and is in fact, a recipe for failure. Funny how communists know that lower taxes grow the economy and keep you competitive.”

“By 2017, the IMF predicts the GDP of China will overtake that of the United States.”

  • $30423294

He is saying there is a perfect correlation between the size of the tax code and the capacity for abuse.

    There is.

    • Clayton Grant

      Well said!

  • rennyangel2

Flat tax would eliminate 90% of IRS; Good way to downsize gov. to only people who know what they are doing–unlike the bunch now who are stupid, clueless, know-nothings, and dopes.

  • IceColdTroll

9-9-9! And if you don’t like Herman Cain, you’re a RAAAAAAACIST!

  • Brian

I’m in favor of a single 10% flat income tax for everyone – and repeal all deductions, loopholes, tax credits, and deductions.

    • Sharkteeth

Brian my name is Brian and I agree.

  • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

But the Government Agency that didn’t treat certain political groups fairly because they had a Conservative bent to them should be allowed to continue running? And in charge of our HEALTH CARE? Run by the person who perpetrated this scandal in the first place?!?
