Matthew Yglesias can’t put his finger on what the IRS did wrong

Liberal Slate writer Matthew Yglesias knows the IRS did something wrong in targeting conservative 501(c)(4) groups and leaking their confidential information to liberal journalists, but he can’t quite figure out what.

Tax administration is hard!

He asks if the only alternative to selectively targeting conservative organizations is to “rubber stamp everything.”

Because giving equal scrutiny to liberal and conservative groups clearly is not an option.

Point taken, sir. Well spoken, and in all honesty, I have no answer, though these fine folks have a head start on it. All I had was dissection to get an answer…

How would Yglesias feel if the IRS targeted homosexual political groups ?

    • Kevin Gallagher

He would surely blame Bush or Romney for that.

      • http://www.facebook.com/brock.williams2 Brock Williams

Actually he would blame Bush or global warming….

        • eric_in_NJ

Exactly! Other culprits could include “the corporations”, “the tea party”, “talk radio”, or Hillary’s favorite “the vast right wing conspiracy”

  • JohnInMA

Does he not understand the concept of procedure and rules, either? Regardless of whether the witch hunt was BALANCED by political affiliation (or likely affiliation), rules were broken and bypassed and laws may have been broken. Unless Slate writers have little access to the rest of the press through official releases and simple Lexis efforts, he must be otherwise ignoring disclosures by comrades in arms like ProPublica. They were GIVEN information last year about the groups that was not supposed to be public, for example,.

I suspect that if I had a degree from Harvard, I would do my best to hide it. Fortunately, I have an engineering degree from a small Midwest university where I actually learned something useful. Does it surprise me that he cannot figure out what Holder did wrong? Not in the least.

Can’t blame the Republicans for this admission.

He conveniently left out Shulman’s testimony to the committee, LAST YEAR, denying the IRS was targeting tea party groups. He can put his finger on THAT. What he does with his other fingers is none of my business.

  • surewewill

Um, they likely do rubber stamp everything, well, every organization that is liberal, progressive, Democratic, etc.

Another attempt to wash clean the dirty laundry of the Obama administration…..what do the ‘cleaners’ get in return? More proof that ethics escapes liberal conceptual ability.

  • http://profiles.google.com/danielmedicis Daniel Medicis

Cut the crap, Yglesias! Any fool can see you’re circling the wagons and playing dumb!
Three huge scandals in several days, defeat of the gun-grab bill, economy in shambles, Middle East in flames, and what does Obama do? Goes to Harvey Weinstein’s mansion to fund raise with the uber-rich and calls out Rush Limbaugh.
Liberals have to be slamming their heads against the wall today.

Stop playing this G-D game, you Left wing tool! It’s not just US any more! The administration is coming after YOU now. Wake the hell up!

    • Mark Seegar

In fact I bet they have recordings and records of all his phone calls (without warrant). But he shouldn’t have a problem with that. Mainly because he’s too stupid to know that is wrong and he knows they would only use it for the “right” reasons.

      • http://profiles.google.com/danielmedicis Daniel Medicis

Good point, Mark. The part that is so infuriating is that the Liberal apologists for this administration continue to play dumb while more so-called conspiracies they accused US of harboring are turning out to be true.

And even worse, it’s THEM now in the crosshairs of this government. This government went after the second amendment a few weeks ago. Now it’s the first amendment. And don’t forget that Jewish groups were targets of the IRS, which means the government SINGLES YOU OUT FOR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS as well.
The Left went nuts when Bush made DHS – and rightfully so. They went nuts when Bush wanted to look at Library records. And rightfully so. Now they just pretend that Obama, who is Bush on steroids, is OK because he’s going after people they disagree with?

LOOK AT HISTORY – Mao, Stalin, Lenin, Hitler, Mussolini, Etc., – They start with the people YOU don’t like and then they turn on YOU.

This is a abuse of power to order the IRS to target the Tea Party and Conservative groups, letting Liberals have access to confidential information for political reasons to use for their advantage ,what can you be thinking Matthew !!!

  • ed schneider

As you well know Michelle, I’m not allowed on your precious Twitter? By the way, can you pull a few twitchy strings for me? Anyway, This Matthew guy sounds like a real idiot? But who knows, he might just be a pretender to the intellectual throne of Liberalism? Their standards seem to be so low? I mean, have you ever heard an original thought out of them? It’s just the approved spin is all they know how to speak! So let’s give our little Matt some space, because he might just be one of their best and brightest?

  • Sua Sponte

I guess I can see why someone with zero leadership skills or sense would gravitate towards liberalism, because it’s easy and you don’t actually have to stand for anything, well at least for very long.

  • Mickey O’Brien

Why didn’t IRS likewise scrutinize 501c apps with “Progressive” or “Progress” in their name? Progressive 501c’s already outnumber Conservative 501c’s, and have 10x the amount of assets. Classic bullying.

I was pretty sure this was a “false dichotomy.” But I wasn’t sure how to spell dichotomy so when I looked it up, had to laugh at the example:

It reminded me how long the left has been (or pretended to be) impervious to simple logic.

what these idiots don’t understand is that someday there will be another conservative president, maybe not in 2016, but someday there will. when that happens, do they really want all this stuff happening to them??? because by accepting it now, they are setting a precendent.
you’d think out of sheer common sense and self interested, they would join conservatives in demanding answers.

One suggestion was that these groups were targeted because they are “right wing anti-tax groups” and therefore might be likely to avoid tax.
One of the reasons that conservatives are opposed to higher taxes is because they expect to actually PAY their taxes. Very different from the high tax advocates who are happy to wave in any tax rate because they themselves do not plan on paying them
