OFA collects 1.4 million email ‘signatures’ in favor of expanded background checks

Organizing for Action is testing its political muscle by leading the push to revive gun control legislation, and it has announced that it has collected 1.4 million “signatures” on a petition. The only required fields on that petition were an email address and ZIP code, so who knows how many individuals actually signed on to this:

The vast majority of Americans from all corners of the country are united in support of expanded background checks for gun sales. I’m calling on you to listen to the American people and act to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. It will make our communities and schools safer. Please take action to expand background checks today.

It’s probably best that OFA has changed “90 percent of Americans” to the less specific “vast majority of Americans,” but 1.4 million seems awfully low for an organization using the marketing power of Barack Obama’s name.

Give me a week, and I could get 10 million that are for protecting the 2nd Amendment.

  • Jayve

Thank God I picked up my AR before the next round of liberal BS about guns comes around. On a side note, all people feel thugs and criminals should not have access to weapons, but it’s easy to see that the libs definition of “criminal” are people on the right.

  • grais

It’s not the “vast majority of Americans,” either. It’s not even the “vast majority” of adult Americans.
    What it is is ‘laughable’.

Although 1.4 million is very small number, I wonder if these signatures are as real as the ones used to get Obama on the ballot in Indiana.

    • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

I wonder if 1.4 million is the number of guns that Obama and Holder sent illegally to Mexican drug gangs to murder Border Patrol Brian Terry and hundreds of Mexican citizens.

    • http://twitter.com/HotRodFan899 Gary Freeman

BOOM! That’s all I have to say. I’m going to go tweet that to Obama.

  • http://twitter.com/1curlybill curly bill

how many were dead ppl or ppl signing up other ppl

    • Rob

Did they even need verification of a valid email? I usually give web sites the email address *mashing buttons*@*mash less buttons*.com

  • AaronHarrisinAlaska

1 in roughly 300 Americans support gun control is what they’re basically saying.

  • Kenai

Big whoop, the NRA has five million signatures to start with before they even begin to collect more. That’s not counting the GOA, SAF and other pro gun organizations. OFA fail, epic fail.

How does OFA explain the 48 Senate Democrats (and only Democrats) who on April 17 voted AGAINST the Grassley Amendment to improve mental health reporting to NICS as well as fund improved prosecution rates for illegal gun traffikers and straw purchasers?

What good does expanding current laws do when the Obama/Holder DOJ refuses to prosecute federal gun crimes now? 40% drop in prosecution rate by Obama/Holder DOJ of federal gun crimes from that of previous administration.

Why does Obama/Holder continue to hide behind “Executive Privilege” in regard to releasing to Congress all subpoenaed info. on Operation Fast & Furious but wants law abiding gun owners to have to release all their medical records via HHS/Obamacare to BATFE? (see Federal Register Proposed rules change for April 25th under HHS).

Are laws only for the little people who are not in the DNC voting block?

How does OFA feel about the Obama administration arming Al-Qaeda in Libya and Syria?

    • thetreyman

“What good does expanding current laws do when the Obama/Holder DOJ refuses to prosecute federal gun crimes now?”

now that is the right question.

  • Jack Deth

But… But… But there’s 90% of Americans who want background checks, registration and confiscation of firearms!/sarc.

  • Rob

NRA has 5 million paying members.

Can’t even get half that to give up an email address? Yeah.. “Vast Majority”

  • nc

Dang it, have they been caught cheating AGAIN?

    • TexSizzle

      No, STILL.

  • Adi

No doubt those e-mails were pilfered through typical OFA/Google tactics of requesting private info. Been done before on Hussein The First elections and the shady campaign donations.

Hardly the impact and numbers they expected, methinks.

  • MSM

Most of my friends are liberal. Yet to my surprise, when my father had a gun party (go out and practice on jugs of water) with our Japanese visitor who wanted to try shooting, almost all of my liberal friends were eager to shoot. I had one who is a rabid Obama supporter but when offered the chance to shoot an AR-15 he couldn’t wait. He even had his picture taken holding it with his wife aiming another weapon.

I could count on my hand the number of my liberal friends actually against guns and willingly to get off the couch to do so.

For them it’s like this. “Are you against right-wingers having guns?” You bet. “So you’re cool being stripped of gun rights with them, right?” Wait… what?

They don’t see why they should be stripped of their rights too. They’re the responsible ones, right?

  • Jason Call

Incidentally, That’s fewer than 2.3% of all 2012 Obama voters, and less than 0.5% of all Americans. Obama, go back to Chicago and organize those bums. What do you expect Congress to do? Laugh? How about your Liberal donors? Are they pleased? Fail.

  • Just Another Guy

Let’s see….I personally have over 12 email accounts….so, knowing the trustworthiness of OfA being close to zero…..

1.4M divided by, oh, let’s say 20, gives 70,000. That MIGHT be a little high…

  • $30423294

They are super mad that Mr. Obama lost the gun issue. Their obsession is wonderful because it means we can take strategic advantage of it. Angry people lack self control. Life experience tells us they end up self destructing. Am I right?

  • essence428

1.4 million signatures? You mean like those fake signatures that got him on the ballot in 2008?

  • BlahBlah

Why does OFA still have a non-profit status? I mean they are clearly endorsing Obama by using his old Twitter acct. Not to mention misleading etc. Not to mention that Twitter should unverify the acct.

  • Alex Furlong

Heh. Organizing for Action has been around for all of four months. I’m not surprised that this lame result is “the most in OFA history”. When you have no history, anything will surprise you.

  • http://twitter.com/HotRodFan899 Gary Freeman

Everyone will have to excuse the POTUS. He is using LIBERAL math. Which as we all know, isn’t real math.

  • MrApple

What about the 5 million NRA members or the 5.83 million (as of 5/8/13) letters sent to Congress via the Ruger website, all asking for better enforcement of existing laws?

  • marcellucci

I’ll believe it when I see a picture ID next to each “signature”………..
In the meantime, liberals…..keep writing on your hands

Two new studies: Gun crime has dropped dramatically over last 20 years — and most Americans have no idea
Behold the power of this fully armed and operational propaganda machine. First, from the Bureau of Justice Statistics:

Firearm-related homicides declined 39 percent and nonfatal firearm crimes declined 69 percent from 1993 to 2011, the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) announced today. Firearm-related homicides dropped from 18,253 homicides in 1993 to 11,101 in 2011, and nonfatal firearm crimes dropped from 1.5 million victimizations in 1993 to 467,300 in 2011.

In 2004 (the most recent year of data available), among state prison inmates who possessed a gun at the time of the offense, fewer than two percent bought their firearm at a flea market or gun show. About 10 percent of state prison inmates said they purchased it from a retail store or pawnshop, 37 percent obtained it from family or friends, and another 40 percent obtained it from an illegal source.

  • S Davidson

NRA membership alone is 4.5million. Add my signature to the anti-gun grabbers and that makes 4.5million +1.

  • Jack Deth

Chalk up another epic failure for OFA!

Just another day that ends in “Y”.

  • tops116

Meanwhile, OFA interns found to have extreme cases of carpal tunnel syndrome. Connection?

  • http://www.facebook.com/100000220517250 Thomas Collins

…delivering petition to congress??? Put it behind the budget, that way no one will see it.

  • JaneBlacksmith

So, if OFA collected 1.4 million email signatures, it’s safe to say that about 10,000 of them are legitimate.

  • tertiaryintervention

    90% of 313,000,000 = 281,700,000

    281,700,000 – 1,400,000 = 280,300,000

    The numbers seem off.

Also who checks the veracity of the signatures? By what method are they collected?
