Democrat Rep. Stephen Lynch admits Obama Administration’s Benghazi talking points were bogus

Congressman Stephen Lynch is a Democrat who represents the 8th Congressional District of Massachusetts.

Today on Fox News Sunday, he said the Obama administration’s Benghazi talking points were a “victory of hope over reality.” The comments occurred during a debate with Rep. Jason Chaffetz, a Republican from Utah.

Partial transcript:

Chris Wallace: I want to talk to you about a controversy, a continuing controversy, about the talking points that came out afterwards that led, some people say, to a lot of disinformation. These were the talking points the administration put out after the attack. Steve Hayes of The Weekly Standard reports that the first draft by the CIA on September 14th said this: “The crowd almost certainly was a mix of individuals from across many sectors of Libyan society. That being said, we do know that Islamic extremists with ties to al Qaeda participated in the attack.” This was the first draft of talking points from the CIA on September 14th. But after objections from State and after the White House had a meeting, you can see the talking points — and it’s a little hard to see there on the screen — there were lots of lines drawn though them. They were heavily edited. And all mention of the Islamic extremists were taken out. Congressman Lynch, weren’t the talking points the administration put out in advance of Susan Rice’s appearance on those five Sunday shows, weren’t those talking points scrubbed?

Rep. Stephen Lynch: They certainly weren’t accurate. I don’t know what the process was there. But absolutely. They were false. They were wrong. There were no protests outside the Benghazi compound there. This was a deliberate and strategic attack on the consulate there. So any statement that this was sort of like the you know the other protests in Cairo and other embassies, this was not that type [of attack].

Yes, he admitted this, but he still wouldn’t concede that there was a cover-up or that the change was any big deal. You know, like a big “so what?”

    • Gallatin

Yep he said in so many words; “At this point what does it matter?”

      • angeleyez

At this point shouldn’t we make sure Hillary is held accountable ?

        • Gallatin

If shrillary had any character she would just admit that she was asleep for months of 3:00 AMs leading up to and including 9/11/2012.

    • Brett McMicken

the same people who want us to move on from this are the same people who want Nixon to be forever remembered for watergate

      • nc

You are so right. Didn’t they just yesterday make a big deal about the “43rd Anniversary” of the Kent State shootings?

With Benghazi, we haven’t even made it to the first anniversary, and they already have swept it away.

    After the election

      yep how convenient

I was encouraged by this one admission from a Democrat then I saw the whole interview and all the lying and spinning he was doing suggests it’s not actually much progress at all.

    • Squirrel!

It was a horrible interview…. for him. I laughed & said what a joke this guy is. Chaffetz was composed the whole time. Any sane person watching would’ve known who the liar was. This man seemed very uncomfortable & was obviously spinning things. Any Dem with even an iota of common sense should be condemning this now. Afterall, the reps are the ones without term limits. Obama will (hopefully) be history in a few years.

  • BAW

Democrats and the press will have to be dragged kicking and screaming to the truth about Benghazi. But after seeing Darrell Issa’s interview on Fact the Nation today, I believe he may be the man to make it happen. He’s been attacked, derided and ignored for all these months but he just kept digging. He’s been deliberate and thorough. He’s clearly ready for their excuses for the video lie. “We can’t find a classified reason for it, we can’t find a diplomatic reason…” (and then he can establish that the big lie about the video was a serious diplomatic misstep). Thanks Californians, I didn’t know you had it in you to send a man like Issa to Congress. I hope all Republicans will strongly support him from this point forward.

  • Steve_J

They lied and it was apparent from the moment they sent Rice out to the Sunday shows. Where were the Democrats then?

    • Slapweasel

      Hiding behind a sycophantic media’s wall-of-silence?

  • forgetyoutooo

Reminds me of Hillary’s performance standing in front of the flag draped caskets of the four dead Americans blaming the video and campaigning for “the man that came over and cried with the State Department. Lying-bitch.

    • Jazzee

      excellent post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jeremy

Yeah he is acting like he is being forthright what a joke after 7 months.

    • Paul C.

    Well scrub this:

Mr. Obama was getting throttled in his 2012 campaign because he is a bad president.

He had one accomplishment that could potentially appeal to Americans outside of his narrow & bigoted base: his killing of Osama Bin Laden crushed Al Qaeda.

The Al Qaeda attack in Benghazi neutered Mr. Obama’s claim.

The democrat party, with full knowledge of what it was doing, used the force of the executive branch to lie to the American people.

We will never forget what the democrat party did to this country. NEVER.

What difference, at this point, does it make?

Can I run for office now?

  • stillinthe60s

“Scrubbed” talking points? Is that what Biden was talking about when he described Obama as a clean and articulate black man?

  • Lynn R

Where were you 8 months ago?
