Pathetic: Netflix joins #SarahPalinFilms hashtag by suggesting flick about moon Nazis

On Tuesday night, lefties launched the #SarahPalinFilms hashtag. You know, because her 15 minutes have come and gone and she’s totally not living rent-free in their heads.

In fact, Sarah Palin is so irrelevant that Netflix jumped into the hashtag game by recommending “Iron Sky,” a low-budget sci-fi comedy in which a parallel is drawn between President Palin-Caricature and Nazi invaders from the moon.

One person who follows Netflix on Twitter called the movie “hugely entertaining.”

Netflix agrees.

From one review of the movie:

The film tries to make the connection between the Nazis and the current state of American politics via a US President character that embodies the Sarah Palin brand of politics, but it’s done in bad taste and this is where the satire fails. With slogans like “Black to the moon” slapped on a mission to send an African-American man to the moon and a character calling former US President Franklin Roosevelt a “spastic” is where the filmmakers show how out of touch the film is.

An excerpt of an interview with Finnish director Timo Vuorensola:

The scenes where the Moon Nazis come to earth and lead the re-election campaign for the right-wing American president, clearly modeled after Sarah Palin—were you trying to draw parallels between extremely conservative Americans and the Nazis?

There are a couple of messages that I hope to get through, one is the fact of international politics and how the rhetoric used in the 1930s is returning in [terms of] political language. This is the language I hear more and more in America and also in Europe. It’s worrying. Yes of course, I don’t think there’s too much distance between these two entities in the end…There’s definitely the right wing movement of America [having] the same vibe as the political vibe in the 40s in Europe…I do think that people should listen to it, open their eyes and listen to what language they’re using.

Cute, huh?

This just makes my choice to dump NetFlix that much sweeter.

I’ve been considering joining for a while. Netflix just made the decision easy.
They don’t have anything I want that I can’t find elsewhere.

      • pajamakat

Wow, I really was considering joining. They made the decision for me. Let the libs support them. Not a smart business move.

        • Me too

I too was so close to joining last month; I’m glad I did not. And I certainly won’t now. I don’t need politics from a DVD-sender-outer.

      • Donna W

It’s honestly not worth it…old movies, tv shows are old, nothing really updates very fast. I love the Andy Griffith show, but I can get that on dvd.

        • BigSky1970

I can watch Andy Griffith at the local library, which has a better selection of movies than Netflix does.

Hey Netflix social media team: I know your comfy media bubble tells you that left wing politics is cool and everything but…

Here’s a newsflash for you: In America, being a leftist is actually very uncool. It’s like advertising that you’re desperate to look cool, which is the opposite of being cool.

Find a grown up to explain it to you.

Also, oh yeah, what’s the easiest way to cancel one’s membership?

            BTW … about those “wings”

Fun Fact: Nazi = National SOCIALIST German Workers’ Party

The Media and the Education Establishment has hoodwinked most Americans into thinking Fascism is “Right Wing,” when it most certainly is not.

The term “Right Wing” in fact originated in French Parliament and referred to supporters of the MONARCHY. It really doesn’t apply to anybody today.

Now, Left Wing … that’s your Socialists, Communists and Fascists … then as now.

They’ve also neglected to remind people that Al Gore Senior voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, that rich Southern Democrats wanted slavery, that Lincoln was a Republican who created the Republican Party to abolish slavery, and that we don’t live in a democracy but a Representative Republic. Or that Jimma Carter (D) changed the Social Security law to allow immigrants, who had never paid a dime into it, to be able to collect YOUR benefits when they retire costing YOU money, or that LBJ (D) took ALL of the money in the Social Security Trust Fund and moved it to the General Fund where the Democratically controlled Congress spent every penny of it on his “great society” or that Al Gore (D) as President of the Senate, cast the tie-breaking vote when 50 Republicans voted against taxing Social Security and 50 Democrats cast votes wanting to tax Social Security, and they certainly don’t teach children that over 30,000 scientists signed a petition declaring Al Gore 100% mistaken on his insistence that “the planet has a fever”, citing amonsgst reams of factual evidence that the Ice Age occurred a mere 10,000 years a go when there were no automobiles, jets, planes, lawn mowers, boats, factories, coal=fired utilities (which all have scrubbers anyway).

And my football, of course you mean what Americans call “soccer”
Or did you mean that sport played for 10 second spurts between 2 min commercial breaks that all suburban, middle-class men seem to salivate over in a strange, homoerotic way?

          • MovesLikeJagr

Kinda off-topic, but there is a suprising large amount of Europeans (both right wing and leftists) that prefer sports like American football and ice hockey over soccer – just saying…

          • Debra Blouin

            Yes, we are!
What if I told you ee are the raging gun nuts that saved Europe, even the capitulating Frogs, from Hitler’s Nazi Germany. And we are the raging gun nuts that kept Soviet Russia in check until we got a president with the brass to tell Gorbachev to “tear down this wall”.

We are the nuts who think governments should be strong but small, who don’t expect our sustenance to come from the public largess, as do your Euro-fellow travelers and that without responsibility or accountability. We are the nuts who believe individual strength and self-reliance is a virtue, and that when used in conscientious partnership with a society of strong, self-reliant individuals, our unity is all the stronger for our individuality.

          • MovesLikeJagr

While Reagan did contribute to a (sooner) communist collapse – partially by increasing military funding, the Soviet Union would have collapsed eventually – by the 1970s their economy had stagnated, and their war in Afghanistan took a heavy toll on their economy as well. Reforms were needed, and they would either lead to a collapse at some point, as the chance of being willing to go all the way like China did was not there.

          • Discochip

The Japs who bombed Pearl Harbor cancelled plans to invade the mainland when they learned belatedly of the 2nd Amendment – passed on December 15, 1791 – and figured every American citizen was armed, it would be a block by block struggle, so it was just easier for them to do a sneak attack, awaken the Sleeping Giant, then lose 2 cities making it a more convenient to bury them in one location.

I was seriously thinking about getting a Netflix subscription for my Xbox. That thought has been immediately shot down.

Btw, ‘Iron Sky’ sucks big time, no wonder it comes from ‘progressive’ Scandinavia. The movie is stale and its attempts at being humorous fall flat.

Now try to draw a comparison between the actual Scandinavian Nazi collaborators and their own politicians and you’ll see a lot of fake outrage. The irony is thick, just like their skulls.

        • Jim

It comes from New Zealand – parts were shot in Scandinavia.

          • Jason Murphy

It’s a Finnish production with a bit of co-prod from Germany & Australia. Some scenes were shot in Queensland & NYC. Has nothing at all to do with NZ.

It’s a tongue in cheek genre pic based on a ridiculous concept. Irony is certainly lost on some. Amazing… knickers, knot…

          • http://twitter.com/TVQueenUK TV Queen

So very true. Let’s ALL blame the Nazis!!!

          • J_Stuart_Mill

Yes, I blame the National SOCIALIST German Workers’ Party and it’s leaders, for WWII.

But I blame the Media and the Education Establishment for the fact that most Americans think Fascism is Right Wing, when it most certainly is not.

The term “Right Wing” in fact originated in French Parliament and referred to supporters of the MONARCHY. It really doesn’t apply to anybody today. Now, Left Wing … that’s your Socialists, Communists and Fascists….

          • Adi

The movie is mostly made in Finland with a Finnish director, writer and producer. Outside the main cast, most of the actors are Finns.

As you know, Finland has a very unsavory Nazi past.

          • MovesLikeJagr

Finland has been a democracy since its independence from Russia in 1917, and thus remained so during WW2 – they never were an official member of the Axis, but joined in the invasion of the Soviet Union in revenge for territorial losses as a result of the Winter War of 1939-40. While some joined the SS, as some Danes and Norwegians did, the Finns never were enthusiastic about being on the same side as Nazi Germany – and Norwegians and Danes in general were against the Germans and resisted where they could.

Also, obviously some of you (who obviously are conservatives) take this film way too seriously. I am conservative (but European conservative is probably still liberal in your eyes?) and pro-U.S., but I loved this movie.

          • Kitty Gemini

And as you know, USA has a very unsavory past as an Soviet ally. You remember helping your friend Stalin, after he had murdered millions of people and invaded neighbouring countries (five I think)? I certainly do because among them were tens of thousands of Finns who died in slave labour camps in the 1930s. I thank the Germans who helped us escape that fate and stay independent. All we got from western allies was sympathy.

          • BigSky1970

We were never allies with Russia in WWII. We however had a common enemy in Hitler.

          • Kitty Gemini

Well we were never allies with Hitler nor had a Nazi past! But you did help Stalin, we only received help from Germany and we had a common enemy with Stalin. Also Roosevelt and Stalin looked pretty cozy in Tehran and Yalta. USA also had segregated troops, Finnish Jews served alongside other Finns.

And no, technically Finland isn’t a part of Scandinavia.

        • Hasoere

Finland is not a part of Scandinavia..

          • Guest

            Yes, we are.

          • BigSky1970

Yes they are. Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland make up Scandinavia.

          • Hasoere

Sorry, but you are wrong. Scandinavia consists of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The northern countries consists of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and some other smaller states. You can look here if youre interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandinavia

I am Norwegian, I should know:)

          • MovesLikeJagr

That actually depends – the Scandinavian peninsula consists of Norway, Sweden and, to some degree, Finland. Culturally and historically, however, it is Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

In either case, the proper term for all countries is the Nordic countries, as you mentioned.

        • Hasoere

Finland is not a part of Scandinavia..

I didn’t even realize that they were still around.

      • el_polacko

nonsense. i’ve been a long-time customer as well and i always get the latest releases…their rapid delivery is outstanding as is the quality of their streaming…and now, with their original programming, netflix can’t be beat.

So you work for Netflix, right ?

      • Dee

Me, too. They seemed to stop carrying movies, and only have tv series. Then it would take 2 years (I’m only exaggerating slightly) after a new series was out for them to release the season on Netflix. Pointless…Then I discovered OnDemand TV (YAY)! Canceled Netflix immediately, no use for it anymore! P.S. Half the dvds they sent were scratched and broken anyway.

Dear Lord. What a pointlessly vindictive (and utterly ignorant) comment to make. There’s no chance you’ve actually seen the movie, but by DAMN it you’re going to make a post to say how you’re punishing Netflix for it. Why, because SOMEONE needs to take the blame. Sigh.

      • Michael Anderson (WB)

Actually I had already decided to punish Netflix for other stupid business decisions. This is just icing on the cake. Stating a political preference isn’t usually enough for me to boycott a company, but when they join in on a personal attack I will take note. I understand it’s hip to attack Sarah but I don’t care, it’s still a stupid business decision. As a result I will make my own business decision which hopefully isn’t so stupid.

Most public libraries have films to rent, everything from the latest to the oldest, childrens movies to documentaries. Best of all, rental is either free, or a nominal $1 or $2. Even our little library in Podunk, AZ, has a great selection, benefiting from the lending library system. All with the understanding that patience is needed – you may not see the latest releases until 6 months after they hit the stores.

          • windskisong

Not in Raleigh, NC / Wake County, NC. I suggested “renting” older movies and the look of horror on the librarians face was absolutely worth the 10 minute tirade that followed. I finished by telling her that was too bad because we had about 400 DVDs that were going to be donated to the Salvation Army thrift store instead. Grin. She still looks daggers at me 2 years later when I come in (which is about 1x/wk)

        • Impykins

Or maybe you could ignore what you see as a political stance and realize that the movie parodies Sarah Palin so OMG someone made the connection that its a ‘sarah palin’ flick. Jesus people. Overreact much?

      • Marie

I thought that too, but they have two other Palin films available: The Undefeated and Media Malpractice, but both are documentaries. This hash tag was clearly meant to be humorous, so that might be their explanation as to why they didn’t promote those two, but we all know the real reason they chose Iron Sky: it mocks Palin and the US in general.

Since they do provide these two films and other right-wing documentaries, I won’t give up my subscription just yet.

        • Jim

The movie doesn’t actually mock Sarah Palin (I saw it in the theaters). The President is a woman who sorta looks like Palin, but is from Texas and speaks a lot more like George W. Bush. It’s not an attack on the GOP. The filmmakers are from New Zealand and don’t know (or care) enough about US politics for it to be as political as a lot of you guys seem to think.

The U.N. and all of the world governments in general all get mocked pretty equally. The general message about all politicians (worldwide) is that they’re all 2-dimensional greedy fools.

The movie is a satire of the old grindhouse sci-fi movies of the 40s and 50s. In a nutshell, it turns out some of Hitler’s minions escaped to the dark side of the moon. And now they are going to invade Earth to start the 4th Reich.

For people who like those old campy movies, it’s pretty entertaining.

          • http://www.BoycottLeftism.com/ itekisan

Aside from the saying that the film doesn’t mock Sarah Palin, (because I’ve not seen the movie, I can’t comment), you are just wrong:

There’s only so far they can sell that, though. Whatshisface on MSNBC was whining his taxes in California are too high. Sooner or later, even the libs think things are too expensive.

Not enough conservatives exist to hurt them financially. Every website you visit has advertisements of some kind. All those dollars go to all sorts of people. You’re living in a dream world if you think political ideology can be stopped by just “not buying” something.

          • digitalPimple

Of course they exist. Cons are larger than the Liberal population which has always hovered under 20%.

And you need not be a con to realize this is just moronic.

          • TocksNedlog

The problem isn’t that there are too few conservatives; it’s that too many people out there are apathetic.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=7011573 Beth Lott

Of course the ideology can’t be stopped through what we choose to buy all by its lonesome. But, if you’d care to glance up thread, you’ll see that is not the question under discussion. The question at hand is how to stop the propaganda being casually flung around in media, and that is something our purchases absolutely do have power to affect.

And this idea that conservatives are vanishingly rare is pure liberal boilerplate. No we aren’t.

The sad thing is, Netflix’s existence is a thumb in the eye to Big Hollywood. They don’t really like them. However, an editorial slant against one or the other politician, especially given the fact that this film was so wretchedly bad (Starship Troopers Direct-to-Video bad), doesn’t do Netflix any favors.

    • TomJB

Its a shame what they did to Heinlein’s very astute novel about politics, citizenship, and military life… Making it into a parody of WWII pre-movie war films was in the worst of taste. Then again, it was Hollywood and the producers probably made it before someone else did it the right way.

      • http://www.facebook.com/701304340 Mario G. Merino

Actually, it was not Hollywood. This travesty is the product of Energia Productions, a Finnish company founded by metal heads, from what I have heard. It is very anti_US, and anti-Conservative as it depicts the USA as being just as bad as the Nazis and the North Koreans. The trailer is actually well done, promising a film that turns out to be terrible. I personally hated it. Finland was on the losing end of WWII, so they naturally don’t like us. You said it, bad taste.

        • MovesLikeJagr

          1) What is wrong with metal?
          2) Can you confirm by a reliable source that the film creators are anti-American?
          3) Just because somebody makes fun of the U.S. and Conservatives, it DOESN’T necessarily mean they directly hate the U.S. – you guys should get a sense of humor and take things less seriously.
          4) Do you know ANYTHING about Finland’s history? Yes, they fought on the same side as the Germans, but were never officially a member of the Axis. During the entire war it was a democratic republic, which joined in the invasion of the USSR to retake territory lost to the Soviets during the Winter War. And what source do you base your claim that the Finns hate America because the side they were on in WW2?

It’s not easy to be a Conservative in Europe (though I assume they are liberals in your eyes), because you can’t take a joke and makes us look bad. I thought it was a great film, even if I am pro-American.

          • Debra Blouin

And we were never officially at war in Korea…

  • likeablaze

There’s a new story like this almost everyday. Conservatives are always getting ridiculed by companies or dis invited from events because there are no repercussions.

    • Jill

Look up the ‘cord cutting’ movement. It is real and significant. Conservatives, statistically, are overrepresented.

      • Canadian in USA

I gave up cable a long time ago and got a Roku…I haven’t looked back.

        • nc

          I just did and I’m still a little giddy…

    • MovesLikeJagr

They make fun of you because you never seem to be able to take it as a joke – you immediately think its an insult. You almost never see liberals bitch and moan when people make fun of them, because they know its a joke and don’t take it too personally.

      • http://www.BoycottLeftism.com/ itekisan

No, but after 40 f**king years of hearing how stupid conservatives are, how horribly, horribly racist conservatives are, how much they hate women and minorities, and omg don’t get started on the gays, it gets OLD. and tired, and played.

I have an idea. How about we talk about your response a few messages up, you seemed to get REALLY defensive about Finland’s actions in WW2.

Now imagine you hear that sh*t every day for the next 40 years, and tell me how “you’ll just take it as a joke”. You know what? F*ck that, I’m sick to death of the sh*t we take just for thinking that a limited government is better than an unlimited government.

As far as liberals, NBC did a fact check of a Saturday Night Live skit. Really, seriously. That’s not moaning and bitchng? really?

        • MovesLikeJagr

One thing is to make a joke about something or, in the case of somebody making a joke about you, take it. Another thing is to write something that has no base in facts or making a statement about something without doing the proper research.

You point to NBC – I could just as easily point to FOX News – they have
single handedly ruined the reputation of conservatives in the U.S., as
has contributed to the notion that being moderate on some issues or
trying to cooperate in a bipartisan fashion is a sin.

Not all conservatives are racist, hate women, gays, minorities etc. I should know, because I am myself a conservative (at least by European standards – which by U.S. standards would put me somewhere in the middle) and I have no problems with neither. The problem on BOTH sides (conservatives being religious nuts, racists and hating women; liberalists having no compassion for the poor and needy; everyone left of center is a communist or a socialist). Had it not been for a polarizing media and a negative tone, people could perhaps have discussed their political differences in an orderly fashion without having to call them names – hell, maybe even make fun of our own beliefs and the stereotypes surrounding them.

Neither side has the ultimate answer to all problems – most have some good elements and some bad elements. Some solutions work better in one type of situation while some solutions don’t work – and vice versa.

      • Debra Blouin

Huh? Seriously? Libs take everything personally. They pick up every cause, every perceived offense, every dissent from their political and moral grab bag of muddled ideologies and hurl invective and slander at conservatives, and call it debate. It’s laughable.

        • MovesLikeJagr

As if the conservatives don’t do that – they create controversies and drama from cases nobody even cared about, thinking that anything that doesn’t fit into their perfect world is something that is ruining your country, and hurl invective and slander at liberals and moderates.

Not everybody is like this – on both sides. The tone would be a lot better without the pundits on both sides.

  • Jill

First, we dumped cable. Next, we dumped Hulu. Now Netflix rushes to double down on cheap shots? Since our family only watches about an hour a week, they too are on death watch in our household. The ‘entertainment’ industry is, at the very least, compelling us to spend more time together. For that, I can thank them :)

    • V the K

Suddenly, I don’t see anything wrong with torrenting movies, music, and TV shows. /sarc

      • Jill

I haven’t run upon too many offerings, as of late, that are worth the hard drive space. The Walking Dead is about the one show worth paying for. The rest can easily be found, legally, online and beamed directly to a Roku with the help of the Twonky app.

        • V the K

I download (and pay for) Rifftrax movies and shorts. Mike Nelson is part of the Northern Alliance with Jim Lileks and John Hinderaker. a.k.a One of the good guys.

LOVE Rifftrax, and glad the Internet was here for a new home for MST3K. Have you seen their Battlefield Earth? Classic!

          • V the K

No, I didn’t think even riffing could save that. (Why I haven’t seen any Twilight Rifftrax) but I’ll give it a shot.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=7011573 Beth Lott

…Okay, you’re being deliberately obtuse. No one is blaming Netflix for the existence of the movie. We are blaming Netflix for endorsing the movie. This is not a complicated distinction and pretending not to get it does not make you look clever.

  • Broomer55

Just finished giving a piece of my mind on Netflix Chat. I’m waititng to see what Corp will do before deciding to keep or cancel subscription. Let it be known it doesn’t pay to vilify non-liberals!!

  • therantinggeek

Probably a good thing I ended my NetFlix subscription a long time ago.

  • The Annoyed Elephant

In Netflix’ defense, the movie is about a Sarah Palin parody that just happens to be available on Netflix streaming. While it was a poor decision on their part to join the hashtag, it doesn’t really seem to be a political thing.

    • Joe W.

Riiiiiight….And Barack Obama really doesn’t know anything about whistle blowers being threatened should they come forward. And Bill Clinton didn’t “have sexual relations with that woman”, the media is NOT biased towards the left, and Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. You can give Netflix an out if you choose, my friend, but I am all for calling them for what they are. Liberal miscreants furthering the agenda of the Progressive Left. You see it your way and I see it mine, I suppose. I mean you no offense.

      • The Annoyed Elephant

Oh, I have no doubt that they’re liberal. I’m just saying that if you’re looking for a dumb-as-a-brick movie that has a stereotypical Sarah-esque character, Iron Sky is it.

Netflix also has the terrible “The Undefeated” “documentary”, but honestly, as badly done as that was, I’d almost prefer Iron Sky.

    • TocksNedlog

Your ‘defense’ is to say “Hey guys, they’re only in it for the money”?

      • The Annoyed Elephant

No. My defense is to say that it’s a relevant answer to a hashtag.

    • camnpat

The issue is where they decided to post their comments. If this had been posted just on the Netflix Twitter feed as a way of promoting b- movie day or something, that would be one thing. But the Netflix message was posted in RESPONSE to a political hash tag.

Either it was a political thing or their social media team is the most incompetent there is.

  • Fredddd

I called to cancel, they said it’s not them! It’s some other account!…Sounded just like Obama’s excuse.

I just did a chat with Netflix support. This is what they said:

Netflix: I can assure you that it is not our intent at all to leave a negative taste in the mouths of our members or even our non-members. I assure you that this has been brought to our attention and that we are
looking to find out where it came from and put a stop to it.

    • ForTheRepublic

It’s not the movie that concerns anyone. It’s the fact that the movie director made it with the clear implication that Sarah Palin (or to use his words, “The American Right”) was similar to the Nazis from 1930’s Europe. They then joined in on a hashtag mocking Sarah Palin by suggesting this movie. It’s the intent of the director, not the character, that caused the outrage at Netflix.

    My communication to Netflix:

As a shareholder I’m more than a little concerned about recent political comments made in the company’s name on the twitter feed. The decision to politicize the company in such a polarizing way has significant negative implications, both to the quality and satisfaction of the internal workplace, and more pointedly to external stakeholder/shareholder relations.

What is the position of the Board and executive management on this new strategic move?

    Netflix Kia

Oh jinkies, that’s not good at all! No worries, this is totally just a rumor that we can clear up right here for you!

    Netflix Kia

Is this Robert that I’m chatting with today?

    You

    Yes it is.

    Netflix Kia

Awesome! Nice to meet you, my friend!

    You

Rumor, to bad it is on your verified twitter account that you specify as your official twitter page!

    You

But please give it a shot, and nice to meet you as well Kia.

    Netflix Kia

Thanks, Robert! Alright! Thank you for taking the time to voice your concern. I completely see what you’re saying. We definitely have people from all walks of life walking here, and I wouldn’t want to want to push away any customers. We respect good values and definitely don’t like to take any political preference. I really would like to have your concerns about this on file about this reponse, would it be okay if I noted your account regarding this issue?

    You

    Sure.

    Netflix Kia

Great! So, can you tell me exactly what you want to be heard on your account, Robert? I just want to make sure that I’m not paraphrasing and get your exact words on record.

    Netflix Kia

Hey, Robert, are you still with me?

    You

    Yes

    Netflix Kia

Awesome! Just wanted to make sure that I didn’t lose you!

    You

For you as a company to go jump in and support the hashtag #sarahpalinfilms which was created by the extreme left (looney to me) and recommend a film with their grand slogan being “Black to the Moon” and having Nazi’s portrayed as Republicans, even though I do not like them that’s just wrong. By doing this shows that the person that made the tweet is clearly posting their or the companies or both beliefs. It shows an obvious bias. It is the right to believe side they want but as a company you should not show your bias blatantly b/c it will cost customers as this scenario has.

    Netflix Kia

I totally hear you! We always want you to be happy with our service. I can definitely forward on this feedback and would be more than happy to. If it wasn’t for customers like you, we wouldn’t have known about this issue and wouldn’t be able to take the appropriate actions! I do thank you for giving me this feedback and I will get it bubbled up as soon as I can!

    You

Netflix did know about it! It came from Netflix. I look forward to a retraction soon.

    Netflix Kia

I can assure you, we are getting that taken care of immediately and your voice has been both heard and notated here on your account.

    You

In what time frame will I see an answer.

    Netflix Kia

We are working to get it taken care of immediately. They have not sent out a time frame for when this will all be cleared up but no worries, Robert, they are taking all of the proper measures to get this entire business situated.

    You

Okay I will wait to make the decision on my account till end of week that should be plenty of time.

    You

    Thank You

    Netflix Kia

It was my pleasure to hear you out, Robert. Thank you for chatting with us and letting us know how you were feeling about our service. Have a great day! And one more thing, if you wouldn’t mind, please stay online for a one question survey.

I gave them the link for the story on Twitchy which they checked out during our chat. They agreed that it was inappropriate and would take steps. I told them that if I didn’t hear that it was addressed I would drop my membership. May have been a rougue Netflix jerk.

  • TJ Wright

Oooh! The right is butt hurt because Netflix and the majority of Americans know quitter (and major ASSCLOWN) Sarah (beauty queen runner up) Palin is a joke. An unfunny joke, but yes, a JOKE.

    • TJ Wright

PS. I will expand my Netflix membership now!

      • ERMERGERD

        Why?

        • TJ Wright

Becuse they offer a good service and have upset Malkin’s flying monkeys. WIN WIN!

          • ERMERGERD

The good service is a good reason, but paying more to spite people you don’t like isn’t really spiting them.

          • TJ Wright

It isn’t spite it is just fun. I love the richous indignation the right wing displays over nonsense yet they support democracy destroying Citizens United Clinton fantasy and that ridiculous Obama 2016 fiction film.

          • http://twitter.com/Dan1231 Walter Sobchak

            Grammar is hard.

          • TJ Wright

I’ll use your word of the day: “Ad Hominem”

            LOL!

          • wwbdinct

            “Richous”….Bwaaaaahahahahaahaa!!!!

          • ForTheRepublic

I’ve deemed it a mathematical certainty that Mr. Wright cannot be above the age of 16. Nobody any older than that would try to troll using the old-hat immaturity of his posts. It’s depressing, really. I’m still waiting for a troll-with-brains to show up on the board, again.

          • TJ Wright

Everyone loves a spelling a grammar Nazi! Bwaaaaahahahahaahaa!!!!

          • wwbdinct

Hey TJ! You do know that you can edit your comments after you post them.

          • TJ Wright

But then your funny joke would just look silly. I wouldn’t do that to you!

      • TocksNedlog

Are you sure your welfare check will cover that?

        • TJ Wright

Har har har. I am posting via my Obama Phone too. ON my way to get an Obama abortion.

    • http://twitter.com/Dan1231 Walter Sobchak

The lazy dog-eating imbecile you worship quit his Senate seat after 143 days to run for POTUS. At least Palin had the decency to stop drawing a paycheck from her constituents after she quit.

      • TJ Wright

The Ninny from the North drew a pay check until she was done embarrassing herself and McCain so she could toss her word salad on Faux “News” until even they knew she was too dumb for their mouth-breather audience.

I know you hate your President and your country but come on you don’t need to be so angry! My word! Are you from the Caucuses or something?

        • http://twitter.com/Dan1231 Walter Sobchak

          Nice non-sequiter.

The dog-eating imbecile spent 143 days in the Senate and accomplished absolutely nothing during that time, and then he QUIT to run for POTUS, but still drew a paycheck from his constituents.

Are you intelligent enough to respond to this or do you just spew ad-hominem insults?

          • TJ Wright

When you stop addressing your President based on a dish his parent fed him (i.e., with an ad-hominem attack) when he was a small child I will take you a slight bit more seriously.

Also, I will need to know that you are a vegan and do not eat any flesh because condoning the eating of the flesh of one animal and not another is a cultural issue and not a moral issue. If you eat chicken, pig, cow, fish, you cannot call out anyone for eating a dog. The End.

          • http://twitter.com/Dan1231 Walter Sobchak

Kind of like how your side bashed Palin endlessly for eating caribou and moose, huh? What’s the matter, boy? You can dish it out but you can’t take it?

          • TJ Wright

I can’t speak for my side but I’ll admit I knew who she was and disliked her long before she entered the national spotlight due to her cruel and viscous aerial wolf hunts. She is, IMO, a very evil person.

          • http://hrh40.wordpress.com hrh40

Of course, you do know that she herself never shot a wolf from an airplane. Right? You know that?

And of course, you know that, as governor, she merely continued a longstanding wildlife management program also perpetuated by Democrat Alaskan governors to bring down the wolf population that was preying on caribou that many native Alaskans rely on for their subsistence?

            Right?

            You know all that?

            Right?

Are the Dem governors who perpetuated this wildlife management program evil, too?

            Or just Palin?

          • TJ Wright

Anyone from any party who advocated aerial shoots is evil. I am a liberal and we do not march in lock step

P.S. I have never put a politician or reality show personality’s picture in my avatar. I vote I don’t worship.

          • http://twitter.com/Dan1231 Walter Sobchak

Then why did you falsely assert that the aerial wolf hunts were Palin’s policy when she was opposed to them you ignorant asswipe?

          • TJ Wright

Bless your heart, sweetie. She offered a bounty. That’s pretty much what we call an endorsement. Thankfully a judge struck down the blood money program 10 days after it was announced by her regime.

          • http://twitter.com/Dan1231 Walter Sobchak

The aerial wolf hunt and the bounty aren’t the same thing you f#$king moron.

          • TJ Wright
          • TocksNedlog

You don’t march in lockstep; and yet, somehow she manages to live rent-free inside ALL of your heads.

          • http://twitter.com/Dan1231 Walter Sobchak

The aerial wolf hunts have been going on for years before Palin became Governor and she was opposed to them you ignorant asswipe. If you bothered to read the emails your fellow cultists obtained with their McCarthyist FOIA witch-hunt you’d know that.

          • TJ Wright

You are absolutely incorrect. Palin offered a bounty of $150.00 in blood money, per left front leg, to wolf killers. You are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.

          • TocksNedlog

Says the same person who says that it isn’t immoral to eat a dog.
            Okay then.

          • wwbdinct

            Oh, you eat flesh alright…..

          • TocksNedlog

Choosing not to eat a dog is NOT a moral issue? Really?

          • TJ Wright

Not for someone who eats other sentient beings. Eating meat is wrong no matter who’s meat it is.

I’ll pause for your inevitable gay joke in 1, 2, 3…

          • daeghrefn

Why do you murder plants for your own nourishment? And these idiots call Palin a “court jester”. The only thing you moonbats are good for is laughs, when you’re not screwing everyone over.

“The Ninny from the North drew a pay check until she was done embarrassing herself and McCain so she could toss her word salad on Faux “News” until even they knew she was too dumb for their mouth-breather audience.”

          • TJ Wright

That’s not anger. Palin doesn’t make me mad she makes me laugh. She’s like the court jester – just a lot dumber. Everyone loves a clown!

That’s why you’re still welcome around here, TJ Wright. Though you are more Pennywise than Bozo.

I have to laugh at the projection of the left in trying to frame conservatives as Nazi’s when leftist politics are the very definition of Nazism.

  • http://pinterest.com/j0s1395/ Josephine (D)

Never mind that the Nazis were about as far from conservative as you can get; it’s more important to hate on Palin.

    • Christian Orpinell

Pretty much. It’s funny how I find people my age (17) despise Palin beyond belief, yet they can’t articulate a basic understanding of why exactly they think she’s “stupid”, etc.

  • David Johnson

Hulu Plus!!! netflix shot itself in the foot when it raised its non internet prices.

  • TJ Wright

I’m as liberal as can be but I don’t get my boxers in a bunch becuase Netflix allows slack jawed yokels the opportunity to rent OBAMA 2016 Movie. Why are right wingers so opposed to the 1st amendment?

    • Randy W

Who said anything about denying 1st amendment rights, genius? Netflix is free to speak their mind, and customers are free to reject them. Now go back to your little “free speech” zone run by your communist professors.

      • TJ Wright

Look up Palin’s knowledge of the 1st Amendment and your GW bush’s use of “free speech zones” and jailing people with anti-bush tee shirts and then we can talk, Einstein.

        • Randy W

You didn’t answer my question. You made an assertion that was false, and you ignore that I called you on it. Nothing wrong with that in your little world of Palin derangement

          • TJ Wright

Is there some internet rule that Randy W’s questions are very serious and bust be directly answered? Well, if there is, I am going to break that rule. You see I was poking fun at the right-wings golden gal who famously has no idea what the 1st Amendment really is. Using a Palinism to highlight a silly Palin defense “scandal” that Malkin’s team of twits is trying to brew. This is mush ado about nothing and I love how uptight the teabag crowd is getting over a perceived slight against their poor little quitter governor/reality star.

          • Randy W

I have an open mind, please provide some evidence that Palin has no idea what the 1st amendment is.

          • TJ Wright

Plain thinks boycotts (like the one everyone here is proposing to impose on Netflix and specifically the one the left proposed against Chick-Fil_A or Laura Schlessinger) is somehow squashing one’s first amendment rights (i.e., if Netflix had poked fun at Obama and the left reacted as you all here are the liberal elitists would be limiting Netflix’s 1st Amendment rights). She doesn’t understand that the 1st amendment protects We The People from government stopping free speech.

You can Google “Plain 1st amendment” and see for yourself. Anytime anyone is critical of her she claims her 1st amendment rights are being violated. It’s pretty amusing.

          • Randy W

I think I get it now. So I can go to your house at 2:00am and yell for hours next to your front door, because this is protected free speech. GG you win.

          • TocksNedlog

If you’re yelling “Come on mom! If I promise to clean my room and take out the trash, will you let me back inside the house?” then the cops will just think its him.

          • TocksNedlog

            Citations, please.

          • robcrawford2

“Anytime anyone is critical of her she claims her 1st amendment rights are being violated.”

            You’re lying.

        • http://twitter.com/Dan1231 Walter Sobchak

Your own knowledge of the 1st amendment is rather lacking, boy.

          • TJ Wright

They’re BOTH members of The Illuminati, ya know.

    • Christian Orpinell

It’s easy to say that when you’re a liberal. Especially when Hollywood knows that placing sex scenes in every single PG-13 movie is going to sell (instead of R movies), or when they release film, after film, that expound upon ideologies found from liberals, or when they spew a lifestyle of moral relativism.

    • NCRelite

Sounds as if you’re a bit confused

      • TJ Wright

Nooooo. Netflis has right wing slanted movies available. They also have left wing movies. They also have movies that have nothign to do with politics. Sixths movie is a sci-fi satire. Why are you people getting so mad about a former 1/2 term loser candidate nor fired commentator and ex-reality show personality being the brunt of a joke?

        • NCRelite

we can and will vote with our dollars. the question is why are you getting so mad?

          • TJ Wright

I’ve got a huge smile on my face right now. Happy and Gay — that’s me!

            😀

        • Nerinab

The point is, TJ, that Netflix doesn’t have a hashtag promoting Obama 2016. Likewise, I don’t see Netflix going out of its way to alienate those with more progressive views. We’re not really mad about Sarah Palin, per se, but rather how little Netflix respects its more conservative customers.

    • Guest

You don’t understand what the situation is. That’s okay.

    • TocksNedlog

This issue has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the 1st Amendment. Thanks for playing.

    • Just Another Guy

Not opposed…sheesh. Exercising it. Along with our right of association.

Just because we don’t agree with you doesn’t mean we are against the 1st amendment. Just the opposite.

  • tommcgtx

I’m so tired of leftist lunitics comparing Nazi’s with the right in general, and the American right inparticular. What part of National “Socialists” don’t you understand, moron? I believe the full title of the party was National Socialist German Worker’s Party. Sounds like small government types to me! I bet the Nazi’s even held peaceful rallies about lower taxes and less intrusive government, and left the area cleaner than when they found it, too!

  • Abiss

  • Joseph Burroughs

cancelled my netflix account moments ago

  • Timbet

Sarah Palin has been attacked and scrutinized like no one else; she’s probably the “cleanest” politician out there.

There has not been one aspect of Palin’s life and career that has not been chewed over, criticized and lied about by her enemies; she has withstood the slings, barbs, bullets, and arrows that would have fallen a lesser person.

Soon after Palin entered the national political scene as Arizona Sen. John McCain’s GOP running mate, she was attacked as a diva, a clothes hog, an irresponsible mother and a political mercenary. They dismissed what she achieved as mayor of her hometown, commissioner of the state’s oil and pipeline board and governor of America’s largest state.

Sarah Palin’s enemies decided that nothing was too personal to attack-including her marriage, her children, her faith, and her wardrobe.

The media distorted Palin’s positions and beliefs beyond recognition. And almost every word out of her mouth was spun as a “flub”.

The media hounded her, and her family, on a daily basis, flat out making crap up (like that she, personally, shot wolves from the air). They claimed her baby was not her own; used despicable language to attack her, and her family; sent numerous reporters to Wasilla to dig up dirt on her ; AP reporters “factchecked” her book; accused her of being an accomplice to murder, her email hacked by the son of a Democrat congressman, political operatives filing endless bogus ethic charges designed to bankrupt a working family with a special need toddler and much more.

The media went through pages and pages of Palin Emails (24,000+ pages of emails from Palin’s term as governor), looking for damning information that could wipe Sarah Palin from America’s political scene.

What they found was the inner workings of an efficient, informed and very involved governor that mounted an unprecedented 80 plus approval rating while in office…..not exactly what the death squads of WaPo, the NYT, and other mainstream outlets had in mind.

The Palin Emails (24,000+ pages of emails) show that Sarah Palin conducted the business of her state in a transparent, bi-partisan, and responsible manner. She worked long, hard hours and treated everyone with respect.

There were no sex scandals, no lewd twitter photos, no misuse of taxpayer dollars, and no malicious behavior, whatsoever. Just a governor doing her job.

This scenario is in sharp contrast to the manner in which the media handled Barack Obama, whom it woefully failed to properly investigate in 2007-08.

The media , Hollywood and the REP establishment have done everything they can to vilify Sarah Palin and her family but despite a massive effort to destroy her, she is still on her feet and making a difference in the political world.

By the way, if Obama received half of the bad press that Sarah Palin does, his favorables would be in the low 30’s

    • Michael Anderson (WB)

Sarah as President would be the female version of Ronald Reagan, but squeaky clean. She projects hope and pride in her country. If she were to become President she would likely usher in an age of domination by the Republican party and set the “progressives” back by decades. This is why she is vilified, she’s down right terrifying to the left.

  • Kristy Patullo

Haven’t used Netflix in years. Their discs were always scratched. Not worth the trouble. Product sucks, they suck. Sarah Palin is always awesome.

Make sure you call netflix and share your opinion. They really think they can do this type of thing without consequences. Funny that the supervisor insisted that they don’t push a political agenda because they also stock “2016 Obama’s America” which in his words was “anti Obama”

  • robcrawford2

I watched the film. It was bad, even for B-grade cheap SF. And they were clearly trying to slam Palin — but were so ignorant their slams were powerless. It was obvious that the film makers have never stepped outside the LA area, had never actually seen Palin speak, and were playing just to their social circle.

And the Netflix tweet is probably from some new-hire or intern.

There was one great line/moment: “Is there ANYONE who DOESN’T have a secret armed space ship?!” (The ambassador from Finland raises his hand.)

I called to personally cancel. I feel bad for their customer service department today…they’ll be running interference for the nitwit who thought this would be a good idea.

Note to everyone who will be calling Netflix: don’t yell at the person on the phone. It isn’t their fault. Be nice to them and simply let them know you are offended and will not be using their service anymore. Remember you are representing conservative America and the way you treat these folks is about like sharing the Gospel…don’t be a jerk.

  • AaronHarrisinAlaska

Many try to label the nazi as a conservative. What many fail to state though is that this “conservatism” was based on an invented paste if aryan purity and glory. The conservatism in this case was the nazis attempt at maintaining this false image and bringing Germany back to a past it never had. Beyond that they were a workers party. A socialist party.

    • http://www.facebook.com/richard.jefferies.96 Richard Jefferies

The average lefty is a group thinking, figuratively goose-stepping myrmidon than will never understand the irony of calling someone else a Nazi.

    • ajdecarlo

It is deliberate. They know that their sheeple won’t actually look up the real history, so they just keep repeating provable lies like NAZIs were right-wingers when they were Socialists, and the Southern Democrats who passed Jim Crow laws were really the modern Republicans.

    • robcrawford2

The “Nazis were right wing” idiocy comes directly from Stalin. He called national socialism — as opposed to international socialism — “right deviancy”. The left, in its simple-minded, drug-addled stupor, thinks that means Nazis weren’t left-wingers.

So, when someone says the Nazis were right-wing, they’re following Stalin’s lead.

  • http://www.facebook.com/richard.jefferies.96 Richard Jefferies

Oh, well I was thinking about dropping NETFLIX anyway. Cya!!!

If American conservatives want to participate in its liberal culture, they have to have a sense of humor. Be big about Netflix and #sarahpalinfilms and “Iron Sky”. They movie is hilarious and campy.

    • TocksNedlog

Who wants to ‘participate in liberal culture’?

    • ajdecarlo

      “Obama is a socialist” – “You racist right-wing KKK’er!”

“Conservatives are NAZIs” – “Get a sense of humor.”

      Ah, consistency.

    • robcrawford2

The movie is only mildly amusing; the Palin parody ends up being more a parody of the fake image the left has of Palin than of the real person, and so ends up being more grating than anything else.

  • tcbaz

Netflix nice job stepping on your own crank. Amazon Prime here I come!

P.S. Big authoritarian government doesn’t get any bigger than the old Soviet Union and National Socialist Germany, both socialist. Small government conservatives like Sarah Palin are the antithesis of both of those, and of the fascist-lite version now being implemented by Big Brother Barry, here and now.

  • arrow2010

Liberal “logic” works like this. Nazis were racists. Republicans are racists. Therefore, Republicans are Nazis.

    • JamesSB

Problem is most republicans are too dumb to know what liberals really think, Republicans are bunch of corporatists……close to being a Nazi.

Having seen the film, if you get rid of the subtle-as-an-anvil-to-the-face America bashing, it’s not bad. One of the best reviews I’ve seen of it said that it’ll be a pretty good film when Hollywood remakes it.

I actually did just get rid of my cable this past month, got an antenna and a Roku box and have been considering Netflix. Haven’t yet found it necessary, but this really gives me pause. It will be a whole lot harder now to convince me to go for it.

Blockbuster gets movies faster anyway. Or do Red Box.

        • nc

          Thanks, Red!

  • thekytikat

FWIW – Just spoke to “Hayden” at Netflix. He was floored by this. Filed a complaint for me & one for himself, then told me to let others know to file complaints. He said Netflix, as a company does NOT take a political stance. Our whole convo is screencapped here: https://twitter.com/thekytikat/status/329691574051143680

    • redstilettos

      Hope he doesn’t get fired.

  • George Murrey

When we started Netflix, we thought we could rent any movie any time. When we learned that wasn’t so, the end. With this stupid idea about crapping on the former governor, this gives me on more reason why that rental company must go. Anybody for Red Box?

  • Lamontyoubigdummy

    Huh.

With Comcast/X-Finity, Dish/BlockBuster @ home, all the hicks in line for the Red Box at Walmart…honest to God…I didn’t even know NetFlix was still a thing.

Looks like they’ve gone on past rock bottom, hit bed-rock, and some 20-something genius in the ad department decided it’d be a good idea to become the #1 rental choice of the MSNBC crowd (all 40 of them).

Bet that stock is taking off like a submarine.

This is the lead story on Twitchy? Though I find Sarah Palin repellant, I have no interest in seeing this movie.

    • daeghrefn

You find her so repellent that you just had to check out the thread and tell us how repellent you find her. Sorry, I just don’t get it. It’s mysterious. I don’t cruise HuffPo telling the O-bots there how much I find BO repellent. I find HuffPo too repellent to do that.

      • Corey Dennison

Too right! These morons always give themselves away in typical fashion: “Palin is so irrelevant, I just had to stop what I was doing and comment on it.”

      • $24698634

        Picked that scab, didn’t I?

        • daeghrefn

What scab? You proggies go on about how irrelevant Palin is, but just can’t seem to get her out of your heads. It’s just a really really funny example of prog “logic” on display. It’d be sort of like me camping out at Kos making fun of John Edwards, right?

          • $24698634

            That one.

          • daeghrefn

That’s YOUR scab, baby. Not mine.

  • wbrandolph

If you actually think when you watch it and acknowledge that “liberals” are not very good students of history, you realize that except for the physical parody of Palin, the adminstration ties in more readily with the current administration. Which is not surprising as Nazism is an even more extreme form of Socialism, hence it is ultra LEFT wing, not right. You have to remember that what many liberals call right-wing is acually more to the middle. Left is increasingly large and overbearing Government. Right is Anarchy–the lack of Government. On a governmental scale, a Democratic-Republic is left of center, with socialism and nazism further left.

Yes, those fourth grade retorts were always the best.

  • Jim

You guys — this movie isn’t what you think it is!

It’s a satire of the old campy WWII movies and sci-fi movies of the 40s. There’s a character who sorta looks like Sarah Palin, but she’s from Texas. The filmmakers are from New Zealand and don’t really care about US politics. In fact, they mock the stupidity and hypocrisy of the UN in a way that most of you would approve of.

The storyline is – after WWII, some of the nazi’s escaped on a rocket to the moon. They’ve been living on a secret military base on the dark side of the moon, with a pretty hilarious (incomplete) version of history. They decide to invade Earth to begin their 4th reich – the invasion is complete with Zeppelins.

The main thing that all of this ire has accomplished is to make a bunch of Kiwis laugh hysterically at how seriously you’re taking their silly movie. Also – just fyi … the movie was funded via Kickstarter.

    • Corey Dennison

What little I watched of the movie (I stopped watching it not for the seemingly anti-Palin caricature of the female President, but the HORRIBLE acting, 3rd-grade visual effects and shitty story, but I digress), the Palinesque president was running an election campaign using slogans straight out of Obama’s campaign HQ….which was a bit ironic.

    • toprat

Actually Iron Sky is primarily from Finland and it was not funded via Kickstarter, but using similar type growdfunding as Kickstarter also is.

  • Mark Cookman

OMG! I bet netflix triples the number of subscriptions that it gets based upon this. Sarah Palin is an idiot. That is a proven fact, like the sky being blue. The fact that some people wish that the sky was purple with unicorns flying through it has yet to change it’s real color. Likewise, the fact that an army of morons wants to believe Sarah Palin deserves some level of respect will not change the fact that she could not think herself out of a parking space.

    • daeghrefn

      “That is a proven fact,”

      Prove it.

  • Ryan ‘radar’ Leahy

    • Corey Dennison

You DO realize that the NAZIs were socialists….right? And the Democrats are the party of ‘White Power” (i.e., they founded the KKK, enacted and supported Jim Crow laws, etc)

I love Sarah, Michelle, and Twitchy but I also love our Netflix too. I regularly stream and borrow movie DVDs that have conservative themes and documentaries such as Sarah Palin’s THE UNDEFEATED and Andrew Breibart’s OCCUPY UNMASKED. Netflix gives suggestions similar to what we have already watched and the site has never ever suggested nor pushed any leftist, liberal, progressive, or conservative bashing documents and movies since we joined in 2005.

This particular Netflix PR error does not warrant hatred and boycott of Netflix. Just my opinion.

  • Simo Hayha

If I don’t like it, I don’t have to pay for it, pinhead.

I understand some people thinking this is an over reaction – don’t agree but understand. I think it’s an indication that the “right” or at least some portion of the “right” has had enough. They are simply sick and tired of being the punching bags of the left. Their values, their beliefs, their way of life, are under attack and made fun of every single day. The moronic poked so cleverly through the movie are painstakingly revealed in these very threads. Moral outrage – you bet – but not for any of the reasons most of you are leaping to your soapboxes for. I imagine only a fraction of you have even seen the movie yet you’re going to be outraged anyway.. It really is incredibly tragic.

And yea, i’ll probably be flamed to infinity for this, but take a min and think about it please: how much energy do you really want to pour into hating an independant company for a joke? If thats what you feel your life should be about, then its probably time to rethink.

    • Robert

Netflix has not made any recommendations to #NetflixObamaFilms
also they only recommended one film on the #sarahpalinsfilms when they have more shows about her…..why not recommend them all. Based on their PR response they are simply promoting a show that they have why that one and why have they not made recommendations to #NetflixObamaFilms when there certainly are some to be made there as well. It shows their hypocrisy I had no problem with the film just Netflix’s single suggestion and the comments from them about it that followed.

For the record: National Socialists, are left-wing, and the echos of their rhetoric and policies are found not in the GOP, but in the White House.

    • Brad

The Nazis were most certainly right wingers. They were pro-Christian, anti-communist, anti-Marxist, imprisoned atheist and labor leaders – that sounds right wing to me.

Nazis weren’t socialists. They called themselves National Socialist German Workers Party to appeal to real socialists.

Adolf Hitler in 1919 attended his first socialist German Workers Party (GWP) meeting, the subject of the talk being given was the “How and by what means is Socialism to be destroyed?”

  • MovesLikeJagr

Both National Socialism and Fascism are economically centrists, with elements from both the left and the right. They believed in the idea of corporatism, where all classes – factory workers, farmers and business owners alike – had to work together to promote the interests of the state.

They never went against the middle or upper class like socialists or communists did – fascists and nazis relied on their support as much as the working class to rule. Also, their nationalist, militarist and anti-communist elements belongs traditionally on the right.

I read one review that pretty clearly summed it up. “If your IQ is under 75, it is a riotous comedy. If your IQ is above 120, it is a horror flick.”

  • Dee

That review puts me at ease. I saw it the other day, and I wanted to laugh so bad, but I described it to my husband as “bittersweet laughter.” It’s almost too scary to laugh!

Excellent. And this I love. Because it is either really funny, if you don’t strain yourself, or it is terrifying. Because yes, as the co-writer of the film (with Timo) and an American citizen, I see first hand the narrow minded, vindictive and ultimately destructive nature of the Republican party. The very fact that they have embraced everything the “Tea Party” has set out for them and even managed to reject, flat out, something as simple as back ground checks for gun purchases, something over 90 percent of the voting public wants, simply means the party is a shameful mess. Frankly, after Bush, anybody who could remain a Republican is doing so out of nothing but hubris. In the end, there is nothing cooler than being a “liberal.” We’ve brought all that’s good to America. And now we’ve brought “Iron Sky.” Enjoy.

    So… The Republicans caused Idiocracy?

Gratuitous attacks on people you disagree with is petty and immature. As for background checks, you are flat out wrong. We have had mandatory background checks since the Clinton years. Time after time, liberals fought against or just ignored the federal laws requiring specific information, such as mental insufficiency, be entered into the NICS database. You want to know why the background checks we already have let psychos get guns? Look long and hard in a mirror.

Not one criminal would ever submit to a background check or waiting period when he can just get a firearm from the black market, no questions asked. The background check push was all show and no substance, and it deserved to be shot down.

Your 90% number is a flat-out statistical lie. It is easily proven that the pole used was skewed Democratic, and the wording of the questions implied that there were no background check requirements already in place. This is a favored tactic of the Left.

There are over 20% of the population that aren’t aware the ObamaCares is law. That is how well informed the media has made the electorate.

    Liberals made that.

Fascism bases its economic model on the Third Position, an alternative to both capitalism and socialism. The third position is a corporatist model in which the state takes a leading role in planning the country’s economy, but unlike in a socialist economy (which doesn’t allow any private ownership of businesses), private enterprises and business owners are allowed to exist – they, however, have to work together with the state, farmers, workers etc. to promote the interests of the state.

The reason fascism appealed to many (both workers and middle class/upper class) were the fact that they weren’t economically as left as the socialists, but not too far to the right as conservatives – some of their social programs did benefit the workers. But at what cost? A totalitarian state structure with a single party, a secret police.

Here Arthur Schlesinger is correct – they DO have a lot of characteristics in common – but economically they were different.

Regarding militarism and nationalism: Militarism has traditionally been a characteristic of the right – most European states of importance in Europe until WW1 were militaristic states (with Germany as the prime example). Eventually, communist states did the same.

Socialism are ideologically against nationalism, since ocialism advocates communal ownership and equitable distribution of wealth in a class-less society (which, eventually should span the entire world), while nationalism promotes solid identification with a political or national entity through socially-constructed policies. These two forms don’t mix – in theory.

In practice its more complicated. A communist state CAN be patriotic – love for the country is something different than love for a nation. And the Soviets were indeed patriots. Some countries even mixed nationalism and (to some degree) religion with socialism – this was/is common in Asia, South America and the Middle East.

However, nationalism was one of the reasons the Soviet Union collapsed – while the Soviets promoted patriotism (love for the country USSR), they were fearful of nationalism in the different Soviet republics, as this threatened the stability of the entire union. And that eventually happened under Mikhail Gorbachev’s rule
However, there is a difference between patriotism and nationalism.

Also – even conservatives and liberalists celebrate May Day to some degree, to irritation to both Social Democrats and Socialists.

And for the record – I am (a European) conservative, and I hate Communism as much as Fascism and Nazism. My Czech side of the family lost amost everything to the Communist regime that came to power in Czechoslovakia in 1948, so I even have a personal reason to hate them. But history is never entirely black and white, and I am just trying to sort out some misconceptions about the relationship between the two ideologies. While Fascism is militaristic, nationalist and economically centrist, it DID derive from socialism because Mussolini (who himself was a Socialist) was fed up with the anti-nationalist and anti-militarist elements of socialism.

  • Debra Blouin

You are correct if you draw the lines this way

The Right:———-MONARCHY/oligarchy/aristocracy. And this is why these ideologies converge, because, in the end, the goal or the result is always autocracy, whether in the hand of a single Tyrant, or the hands of a tyrannical group.

    But consider-
Classical Liberalism (aka American Conservatism) doesn’t really exist on that continuum. You see, that is what makes our founding something of an anomaly in world history.

The way of dividing politics into left and right is faulty or incomplete at best – but the standard way is to have Communism on the far left, then socialists, then social democrats (centre-left), followed by social liberalism, liberalism and then conservativism.
