Greatest orator ever? Obama says gay NBA player Jason Collins ‘can bang with Shaq’ [video]

AWK-ward.

On Tuesday morning, President Obama was delighted to treat the press to the courageous tale of his phone call to newly out and proud NBA player Jason Collins. And then this happened:

Yes, he did.

Given the importance of sports in our society, for an individual who’s excelled at the highest levels in one of the major sports to go ahead and say, “This is who I am. I’m proud of it. I’m still a great competitor. I’m still 7 foot tall and can bang with Shaq and, you know, deliver a hard foul”  — for a lot of young people out there who are gay or lesbian who are struggling with these issues to see a role model like that who’s unafraid, I think it’s a great thing.

Watch here:

OK, but perhaps — just perhaps — the greatest orator ever to walk the earth could have selected a different phrase for this situation?

Pun intended? We’re guessing not so much.

Oh, and for the record:

  • Clayton Grant

I think Shaq will deny banging Jason Collins.

    • CatHerder

      I suspect you’re right.

    • ICOYAR

Shaq has priorities. Banging gay men isn’t one of them.

      • Guest

Do you think if Jason fakes an orgasm, he spits on his partner’s back? Assuming he is the top of course.

        • ICOYAR

Save that sh!t for 4chan. Not here.

          • Guest

I have no idea what 4chan is.

          • ICOYAR

Good. You don’t want to know.

          • Jeremy

it’s a site full of morons and trolls so,pretty much like Salon or Huffington Post.

        • Rightturn

Nobody else is thinking of Jason’s orgasms, seems it’s just you.

        • Jack

is that how he gives a “hard” foul? I know there is a joke in there somewhere

          • Jason Call

Yep, you did it. Don’t try to find it anymore; it won’t get funnier.

          • Jack

true…but I will add that the Prez seemed to be channeling his inner Tobias Funke!

          • Jason Call

Yep, you did it. Don’t try to find it anymore; it won’t get funnier.

  • bidentime

Shaq may have something to say about that. Executive order?

    • VerminMcCann

Anything not prohibited must be mandatory.

  • sigh

I’m Larry Sinclair and I approve this comment

  • RblDiver

With thoughts like this, no wonder he “pivoted.”

  • Guest

I think Reggie Love just got a woodie.

“Bang” with Shaq? Deliver a “hard” foul?! Homophobe!

  • ZoriahShepard

    Teehee

  • HannahJK

Are 90% of us passionate about this yet? I’m pretty sure more than 10% are living under a rock.

  • brewerandpatriot

Obama better not embrace homosexuality too much lest he want his MBH handlers to get pissy.

  • MurphTacular

Obama talks for an hour and Twitchy’s in a dither about the use of a very common hoops phrase? Good. Grief. #smallpotatoes

    • Adela Wagner

Only a small mind would think this is a “dither”. People comment, Twitchy reports. NOT a “dither”. Just funny that all we heard for the first 2 years was Obama is “a GREAT orator”….yeah riiiight.

      • MurphTacular

I termed it like I did b/c It’s the lead item from Obama’s press conference, at least here in Twitchyville. Outside the ‘bubble,’ it’s Guantanamo, Syria and Boston … Here? It’s a mis-statement about yesterday’s ‘dither,’ Jason Collins. And there’s a difference between being a good speechmaker and always using the right words and being quick on your conversational feet, FYI.

        • barney59

Tell that to the Media whenever a Republican mispronounces or misstates something…

          You are a progressive hypocrite!

          • MurphTacular

Last time I checked, I’m not in charge of ‘the Media.’ LOL.

          • barney59

Progressive thought is generally ‘lemming-like’, so i don’t doubt you think on the same shallow wavelength… Nothing personal, it’s just the way liberalism works.

          • MurphTacular

Well, first off I’m not sure what I’ve said here would be construed as ‘progressive,’ and I don’t have a similar train of thought to ‘the Media,’ but thanks for accusing me of being a shallow-minded dupe, just the same!

          • barney59

You are welcome. Sadly, you made it easy.

          • MurphTacular

But, not as easy as hurling baseless insults around someone on the Internet. Nothing could be THAT easy, sadly.

          • barney59

Hardly baseless, considering your position on life…

          • MurphTacular

Wow. You’ve ascertained my ‘position on life’? And I thought I was bored … LOL.

          • barney59

oh, heck… have a great day Murph. I hope, one day, you will see the light…

        • Jill

There are other sources you could go to, right? I’ll give you synopsis, should you not wish to leave and miss out on castigating posters for having a bit of fun.
Guantanamo-Still working on it. After all, it’s only been five years
Benghazi-Nope, haven’t heard about the allegations of lawyer/client intimidation that the networks have all been reporting on.
          Syria-Red line moved forward
          Boston-More of the same.

          • digitalPimple

Yes. somehow the world missed the mans riveting nothing-burgers on all the serious issues.

Murph no one in their right mind looks to this man anymore for anything of substance. He’s lucky people even care to report this much on him.

          • MurphTacular

Mr. DP, you might not be a fan, but that doesn’t mean he’s not still the leader of the free world, and I for one am optimistic that Guantanamo might be closed someday soon and that Syria might see an end to its awful civil war.

          • Rabid

S*it in one hand and wait in the other..see which one fills up first.

          • MurphTacular

I’ll leave the defecations to others (eww) while I pray for peace in Syria.

          • Hiraghm

He is not the leader of the free world; he is a usurper and traitor. Article 2, section 1, clause 5, he’s not eligible to hold the office, as on his BC his listed father was a British subject.

He keeps citing “chemical weapons” as if nobody is ever going to notice that “chemical weapons” are WMDs. Of course, not even Ms Malkin is pointing this out, so he’ll probably get away with it.

Ironically, the one thing he can lay at Bush’s feet, the Syrian civil war, he doesn’t.

Had Bush ignored the left 10 years ago, the middle east would be pacified by now and Syria would be operating under an American governor-general.

          • MurphTacular

Man, where to start with this one … So, we’re not citizens if our dads are ‘listed’ British citizens? (As opposed to ‘unlisted’ Brits?) And your point about chemical weapons being the same as WMDs isn’t clear. What’s the issue there?
The Syrian civil war is Bush’s fault? Hmmm … Oh, because he didn’t keep rolling into Damascus and try to make a clean sweep of all Ba’ath-ists? The support for that would have been nil – and not just from ‘the left’ but most of the US, to say nothing of our allies.

          • TocksNedlog

After all, it’s ONLY been 4 years and 4 months since he signed that Executive Order.

            These things take time.

          • trixiewoobeans

Yes, and all that golfing, vacationing and partying is simply him waiting patiently for those things…that take time…lots and lots of time

          • MurphTacular

And speaking of vacationing, any fans of Reagan or Bush 43 want to find the nearest glass house before hurling the Camp David rocks? :>

          • Guest

You missed the point, as usual.

          • trixiewoobeans

            Oopsie, that was for Murph.

          • trixiewoobeans

            Oopsie, that was for Murph.

You missed the point, as usual.

          • MurphTacular

Apparently … You guys probably want to leave Guantanamo open anyway. Despite the fact some say they’ve been there for 12 years and apparently aren’t guilty of anything …

          • Jill

Apparently aren’t guilty of anything? Please submit all evidence proving that statement. The rate of recidivism alone should lead one to think that maybe, just maybe, their incarceration was merited. As for the ‘you people’ comment, I’d say that if you support Obama you should look first to removing the mote in your own eye. He campaigned on this and had a supermajority for two years. If he really wanted to close it, he could have.

          • MurphTacular

Well, you got to have a Plan B that everyone can abide … And let me go back and find the source of the story I was told secondhand this morning about a gentleman who was there for 12 years … And finally, I did not channel Ross Perot and say ‘you people,’ I said ‘you guys’ … If any offense was taken by the employing of a grouping pronoun, I’m sorry. Ok, this is from January and is similar to my ’12-year’ guy …, but still amply demonstrates one of the main problems in closing or doing anything really, with the facility.
“And then you have about, I think, 46 detainees there who are there under what is termed indefinite detention, which means that the Obama administration doesn’t think that they can be released but also doesn’t think that they can try them and have some sort of process.” — Dina Temple-Raston, National Security Correspondent on “Tell Me More” from Jan. 14, 2013.

          • digitalPimple

Murph, how long are willing to wait before you understand this man is a complete failure? It’s because of people like you that the rest of us have to suffer while you figure out what we all knew years before. Insufferable.

          • MurphTacular

“complete failure” = Not doing what the conservative GOP couldn’t get their own guy elected to do. He’s doing most of what he set out to do. That doesn’t make him a failure, it just makes him a guy you didn’t want to see elected, much less re-elected.

          • digitalPimple

Really. He set out to have an awful economy 5 years into his term? A failing health bill he had to just have? Bad growth and a failing foreign policy? Countless government boondoggles that go belly up daily and not to mention your own admission that he failed to close Guantanamo and will not help Syria? Not. Too. Bright.

I can go on. It’s people like you that got him re-elected not people like me that failed to get someone else in office.

          • MurphTacular

First: When criticizing someone else’s intellect, be careful to spell that particular phrase correctly: “Not. Too. Bright.” Indeed …
            But , I digress.
Yes, the economy remains sluggish, how ACA will look in the real world is still unknown, but it’s hard to see how BHO’s foreign policy is ‘failing’ … Would you have preferred the US had backed up Mubarak? Stayed in Iraq/Afghanistan for perpetuity? Those issues were and are highly debatable. However, what’s NOT debatable is that there have been “countless government boondoggles.” Uh, no. Sure, Fast and Furious, some waste with the stimulus and a really bad response to Benghazi, but hardly the constant source of work for prosecutors other administrations have been … And I’m not sure arming Syrian rebels is the best way to “help” that country, FWIW.

          • Jill

Dear lord man! You are two steps away from having an alter built for the man. He really isn’t, even by the most magnanimous assessment, all that great a President.

          • MurphTacular

I don’t think any of those comments were very flattering, much less anything near a deification of BHO. Twas just trying to answer a question …

          • $45875941

My God, you’re really overdoing it with that overtly fake intellect you’re trying to put forth. Like Odumbass at the podium with that smug face looking down his nose at the audience, reading from his prompter with all his fake stammers and pregnant pauses trying to sound intellectual. When actually, the guy is as dumb as a box of rocks. When he’s off the prompter, he couldn’t say shit if he had a mouthful. You blew it murph (no pun intended) when you started a post with “LOL” like a 13 year old.

          • MurphTacular

Oh, I didn’t know that people over a certain age are prohibited from using familiar acronyms on the internet. And I’m not ‘trying to put forth an overtly fake intellect,’ I’m just reacting, writing and posting. Just like everyone else …

          • $45875941

You seem to enjoy putting words in people’s mouths. Who the hell said anything about prohibiting anyone from using anything? My comment only meant it was juvenile. You should change your handle to Spec Tacular, because apparently that’s what you think you are; a legend in your own mind. Oh, and while reading your drivel, I can actually hear the voice of Hal from “2001 A Space Odyssey.” Very, very mundane.

          • MurphTacular

Thanks, the voice of “Hal” wasn’t what I’m after, but there are worse comparisons, one supposes.

          • Hanoverfist

Well if they quit force feeding the hunger strikers and arming the rebels your wish might be granted sooner.

          • MurphTacular

How are Guantanamo and Syria connected??

          • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

Heh, I like how Murph sidestepped your question just like Obama sidestepped those questions this morning. Quite the irony.

          • MurphTacular

And which question was that BB?

          • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

Jillane’s first post in this thread which still remains unanswered.

          • MurphTacular

            Wha? The Benghazi-witness question?

          • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

“There are other sources you could go to, right? I’ll give you synopsis,

          • MurphTacular

Yo, Director BB, I don’t really see a question in there. She just summarizes – in a very opinionated fashion – what transpired. Also, please note there’s not one question mark in that quote you pasted in above. Sorry to be difficult …

Funny that “rule” didn’t play with Bush & his occasional verbal missteps.

          • MurphTacular

Everyone misspeaks, especially guys who are recorded as often as Bush43 and BHO. I wish both sides would lighten up about that type of thing …

          • Corey Dennison

            Sure…where was that sentiment from 2001 – 2009?

          • MurphTacular

I’ve had that sentiment all along, thank you very much. Have you?

          • Marti

Not just Bush, remember how the left mock Sara Palin for having a few bullet points written on her hand during a speech?

        • Hiraghm

He shouldn’t have been making a statement about Jason Collins AT ALL. I’m trying to picture President Nixon commenting every time Broadway Joe Namath got laid…

          • MurphTacular

I believe the response in question came in response to a question.

          • Hiraghm

And I would have answered it, “Who?”
And following them informing who this person was, I would respond, “Why should I, or anyone else, care?”

But Obama can’t imagine a topic or event that is none of his business.

Just as when Bill Clinton lowered the dignity of the office by deigning to answer a question about his choice of underwear. The only acceptable answers would have included, “That’s a stupid question and waste of my time” and “That’s none of your business.”.

          • MurphTacular

It’s a different world, Jim. Presidents have been acting differently ever since the TV era began, and before that since the radio era began and on back …

        • Kevin Krom

No, the lead item on Twitchy regarding the dog-and-pony show is about Obama pretending to know nothing about the Benghazi whistleblowers. But that doesn’t support your narrative, so you ignore it.

          • MurphTacular

Actually, I’m intrigued about that too – and the reports that the attorneys for the witnesses who claim to have been shelved by the State Department are GOP operatives … Also waiting to hear more about whether there will indeed be some big Benghazi bombshell – as promised – in House hearings sometime soon. But thanks for giving me ‘credit’ for having some type of ‘narrative,’ If only …

        • TocksNedlog

          You’re absolutely right.

When the TelePrompTer isn’t telling him what to say, he sucks.

          • MurphTacular

That hardly makes him unique in the history of American politics.

        • Corey Dennison

Wow…it’s always amusing to see an Obama True Believer go into spin-overdrive to protect the Jug-Eared savior and downplay his idiocy.

          • MurphTacular

LOL. I’m not an ‘OTB’ nor do I believe I’m in ‘spin-overdrive,’ but was merely discussing the issue du jour.

    • RblDiver

There’s a difference between using a “very common hoops phrase” and using said phrase where there is an ENTIRELY different context close at hand.

    • Jill

It is an amusingly bad choice of words, Murph. Lighten up.

      • MurphTacular

I didn’t say it was grandiloquent, hardly. I just don’t see why everyone wants to jump up and down about it …

        • Jill

Likely because it is amusing and cringeworthy, all at the same time.

          • MurphTacular

Yep, if he was offered a ‘do-over’ on that answer, here’s guessing he’d take it … Now moving along … :>

          • TocksNedlog

Yes, the man who’s been granted an infinite number of Mulligans from the MSM has once again shanked his ball into the tall stuff.

[No buns — uh, I mean ‘puns’ — intended. We can’t all be grandiloquent, ya know!]

          • trixiewoobeans

WARNING…Murph HAS to have the last word…ego, you know.

          • MurphTacular

Don’t know if I ‘have’ to have the last word, but can Mr. TocksNedlog enumerate a handful of the ‘infinite number of mulligans”? None leap to mind …

          • trixiewoobeans

            LOL!!!!!!!!

          • TocksNedlog

And that’s fine. As long as he doesn’t direct any questions or false accusations towards me, I’ll let him have the last word every time.

          • MurphTacular

Oops. I DID direct a question toward you, which you haven’t answered. I only point that out b/c when I appear to ‘dodge’ a question around here, I get roundly criticized. :>

        • Corey Dennison

Quit your whining. Your Chicago messiah made an idiot of himself (again). Get over it.

  • Right Wired

    We’ve gone from this:

“The marvel of all history is the patience with which men and women submit to burdens unnecessarily laid upon them by their governments.” -President George Washington

    To this:

“I’m still 7′ tall and can bang with Shaq” -President Barack Obama

    In 20 years, it’ll be:

“Yo Wasssup, b!tches!? Aight! Ya’lls checks is in mail, so you crazy mf-ers best be voting us back in yo”

    • Judy B

      Hat tip

    • MurphTacular

Yeah, as if the Collins comment is supposed to typify high-minded rhetoric. Do you guys ever relax?

      • Hiraghm

it does typify a lack of understanding of the gravity of his position and respect for the office he doesn’t hold.

        • MurphTacular

It’s just a continuation of the presidency’s historical interaction with sports. It’s no different than throwing out the first pitch at a ballgame, (Too many Presidents to name) congratulating the Super Bowl winner via telephone call (Reagan among others) or Nixon attending the college football ‘game of the century’ in 1970. (UA-UT) or Clinton attending college hoops.

          • Hiraghm

uh no… because throwing a ball or congratulating a super bowl winner is NOT the same as praising a sexual deviant for talking about his sexual appetites. The latter is advocacy, not Presidential duty.

          • MurphTacular

Just b/c you consider Collins a ‘sexual deviant’ doesn’t mean everyone does. I doubt you’d be complaining had Obama bemoaned JC’s declaration.

      • gracepmc

This is relaxing and fun and harmless. And Obama opened the door —

        • MurphTacular

Agreed: It’s a classic example of what tennis players call an “unforced error.” :>

          • TocksNedlog

Most tennis players don’t rack themselves in the nutsack with their racket.

          • MurphTacular

But they do commit foot-fouls, which I think is more in line with the rather trivial nature of this verbal faux pas.

      • Right Wired

How long was “Heckuva job, Brownie” covered by the liberal media, comics, snl, late night tv, web sites, john stewart?

        Yep.

        • MurphTacular

Oh well, it’s still fairly funny. Hell, I even heard Limbaugh use it a few weeks back. Maybe this will have as long a shelf life, we shall see.

      • TocksNedlog

        Choom-minded rhetoric.

        Hey, same thing!

        • MurphTacular

Where did you guys get the word ‘choom’? Just wondering …

          • Corey Dennison

For someone so well-versed in Presidential History, you seem to be ignorant of President Mom-Jeans’ own admission of hanging with a bunch of pot-heads in College known as ‘the Choom Gang.’

          • Jill

Didn’t you read his autobiography, Murph?

          • MurphTacular

No. But I take it you all have? Or have you just been familiarized with some of the catchier lingo?

          • Jill

Yes, I have read it. Given that it was a bestseller for a few cycles, many people have read it.

Awesome movie! Did you watch it? It’s been on all week. Mike Judge is prophetic.

        • Hiraghm

On all week? I’ve been living it for 4+ years!

          • Right Wired

            I like money.

    • TocksNedlog

      Metaphorically speaking, we’re already there.

  • Lady 12

    Biden is contagious!

  • Judy B

Can I just say I’d like to read a headline that has Obama & “bang” in the same sentence?

    • MurphTacular

That’s not hateful or anything … You’re actually saying you’d like for someone to shoot the president? Sigh.

      • pepper grove

        Why are you here, MurphTacular?

        • MurphTacular

The same reason as anyone else I suppose: To discuss politics and hear various opinions on current events, And you, pepper grove? :>

          • Corey Dennison

No…so far, you seem to be here just to be a contrarian D-bag.

          • pepper grove

Seems like you’re just looking for an argument.

Could Obama be the first gay president?

    • MurphTacular

According to some historians and purveyors his personal correspondence, some guy named Lincoln already has that honor, or at least being the first ‘bi’ president.

      • Legal Immigrant in TX

        Yeah, riiiight…
Are those the same historians that said all democrat presidents are gay?

      • Kevin Krom

History revisionism and deconstructionism, totally misinterpreting things out of the context of its own time.

First bisexual president was Clinton, if you believe that Primary Colors was indeed relaying factual information in a fictionalized manner.

        • MurphTacular

You can disagree with the interpretation of Lincoln’s letters all you want … They’re pretty odd – even giving the context and timeframe – and I know that it was routine for traveling judges and attorneys to share beds with one another in smaller towns on the circuit. Haven’t read “Primary Colors,” and strangely haven’t heard about that accusation … Interesting.

          • Corey Dennison

            Wow…making up history is fun.

  • Legal Immigrant in TX

I wonder if he’s updated with Bang-hazi yet.

  • Vince Stagbaugh

    “Bang with Shaq”???
Come on, BARACK! Shaq done retired and doing Buick commercials.
But, I bet you could invite the two over to the WH for a banging session, like tomorrow.

    • MurphTacular

So, you’re implying that Obama and Shaq are gay? Pfft … Hi-larious!

  • Will P.

Does Shaq consent to banging with Jason? And if not, is it then legitimate rape?

  • Jeffrey Olah

3.8 rebounds per game and 3.6 ppg for his 12 year career…not exactly a superstar

  • Jim Chandler

Did Biden write that for his teleprompter?

  • TocksNedlog

“Hey, is that a ‘hard foul’, or are you just happy to see me?”

    “Love Shaq, baby love Shaq!”

“Hey Jason, how’s my azz taste?”

  • thehappyhedgehog

Pretty funny. Also, I always laugh when I see a news article refer to the president, a governor, etc, “tapping” someone for some post.

  • AMartel

    Teleprompter malfunction.

Following that up with “deliver a hard foul” just makes the whole thing even more over-the-top and double-entendre-y. Thank you, President awkward.

  • Axelgreaser

Freudian Slip: “Bang with Shaq.” He was likely think as he formulated whatever silly answer he came up with that he’d like to ‘bang with Shaq.’ Just back seat limo talk. Obama looked a little tired. He’d probably been awake all night with lawyer’s going over every possible legal infraction he could make by being ‘off prompter’ and he just got his ‘scenario’s’ mixed up.

  • Jason Call

@charliespiering @fran_chambers Thanks, streetballer. ‘…go to the hole on Shaq’ maybe clearer? ‘Bang’ is so jargony. #misunderstood

  • Jeremy

His Teleprompter took revenge on Obama and he is demanding a pay increase.

  • OpenTheDoor

    Bang with Shaq?
Wow, an unknown black NBA gay player can “bang” with an old, fat, can’t fit in a Buick, retired NBA star?
Sounds like 2 out of 22.

  • mapache

Maybe somebody should ask Shaq if he wants to bang with Collins?
