David Frum wonders just how few gun owners are ‘responsible’

More, maybe? It’s a bit of a loaded question, if you’ll pardon the pun. “Responsible” is a vague enough word by itself, but add the quotation marks and you have a term as open to interpretation as “common sense gun reform.” But when it comes to firearms ownership, David Frum just can’t seem to help qualifying the term; take this tweet from February, for example.

So why is David Frum suggesting that, at most, only half of  gun owners are responsible?

Sure, everyone who owns a gun and hasn’t made the news probably considers him or herself pretty responsible. Wouldn’t it be better to be “safe” than sorry?

Can’t comment, I actually had to look up who this man was…I forgot who he was, I feel sure there’s a reason I feel no need to remember.

    • Mike G.

Yeah, then I remembered he wouldn’t even make a pimple on the ass of a real Journalist.

  • Kenai

What percentage of journalists are responsible, objective reporters? Think that it might be less than half, Davey?

    • kateorjane

Just the question that came to my mind – along with “how any journalists are complete idiots “- way more than half I imagine.

    • Mammytwoshoes

What percentage of Abortion Doctors are responsible? 0%..

Who could in their right mind perform a murder where the victim’s body is not completely out of the womb and then claim that it’s not murder?

    • stuffitnow

By looking at how the MSM is handling the day to day news, it would appear that the number would be somewhere below 5%!

    • http://extremesplash.wordpress.com/ Ben Bollman

Kind of like what percentage of the news is reported that doesn’t benefit Obama or what percentage of the news is used to prop up Obama.

What percentage of liberals are “open-minded”? Or better still, what percentage of liberals are minded at all???

  • stillinthe60s

Depends on how many weapons BO and his boy Holder buy and disperse into Mexico trying to gin up anti-gun headlines so dim bulbs like you can ask such intellectually charged questions.

  • mdtljt

Hey Davey, if your Messiah’s AG would enforce the prosecution of those who ILLEGALLY possess & use firearms in the commission of crimes, guess what?!? Oh, sorry….that would hurt their feelings because they’ve been marginalized by those of us who have no use for their thuggish behavior…so sad…too bad. Every gun owner I know is exceptionally responsible…get your facts straight you tool…but to be truthful, I don’t associate with people who choose to buy their guns ILLEGALLY.

  • EB71

What percentage of conservative pundits named “David Frum” have destroyed the Republican Party? 100%.

  • Adela Wagner

Instead of listening to his fellow Lib/Prog Dems in Congress who have already shown their ignorance on this issue numerous times he should go over to Policeone.com and read the results of the survey they sent out with more than 15,000 completed surveys coming back completed.

To pay attention to the first responders to violent crimes would be more prudent I think. I’ll be sending him the link.

Here is a paragraph off their introduction to the survey page:

Today, PoliceOne.com released the findings from last month’s Gun Policy & Law Enforcement survey,
which drew more than 15,000 completed responses from verified law
enforcement professionals. Covering a broad range of topics related to
the gun control debate in our country, the survey found that the overall
attitude of law enforcement is strongly anti-gun legislation and
pro-gun rights, with the belief that an armed citizenry is effective in
    stopping crime.

To view the survey and the results, go to Policeone.com and in the search box just type in “survey”.

    Gun owners: the new Jews!

    • unknown

It’s only a matter of time before the NRA symbol is used as tool to demonize gun owners

  • AaronHarrisinAlaska

It’s reality vs imagination. The majority of his followers show they live in fantasy land. What’s sad is that the last tweet shows the disturbing mind set of that particular liberal. We all know there are few GOP who could be considered crazy, yet that’s what he labels them. Not because they are, but because he wants them to be. Imagine it for a sec, a world where you WANT your opposition to be psychotic.

    • beebop1952

Especially when you consider that Terrorist #2 was a huge Barry supporter …..

Frum will produce some verifiable stats to back up his claims in 3, 2, never.

Well, you small little, itty bitty male……….. This female, Woman, for those of you in Rio Linda, is 200% responsible. Safe and current on safety courses,

  • 3am

what % in the ‘news’ media/congress are responsible for the shape we’re in? about 90%?

  • C Adams
  • KansasGirl

Well dave, why don’t you hire one of your “non-biased”, “bi-partisan” firms to do research on this conundrum.

  • JR48

Yep, less than 1% of legal gun owners being a problem, I’d say that Frum stepped in it.

Rule #1 When you’re trying to sound like an intellectual asking a serious question, know the answer to the question before you ask it.

    This one isn’t rhetorical.

  • Bemani Dog

Sorry, can’t take someone who has Beaker as their icon seriously.

  • Garth Haycock

What percentage of gun owners think Frum is a dumbass? 99%? 100%?

    • JustLikeAnimals

According to White House statisticians, 99% of gun owners agree with you, but the other 99% don’t.

      • Garth Haycock

        Excellent. :)

  • tjp77

What percentage of journalists aren’t lazy partisan hacks? What percentage of sitting presidents aren’t avowed marxists with ties to domestic terrorists? What percentage of Planned Parenthood employees aren’t murderers? Half? Less?

Boy, I can do this all day.

  • Michelle

Hmmm, I wonder how outraged liberals would be if someone tweeted, “What % of Muslims are “peaceful” do you guess? Half? Less?”

  • annoyinglittletwerp

Hey David: My TX CHL should be arriving any day now-and unless an individual is a member of the criminal element threatening me and/or mine…they’re in more danger of getting attacked by African swallows, during a Chicago winter, while watching the Cubs win the WS in a sweep…than they are from my firearm. ‘K.

    • Jer

In more danger from African swallows, but how about European ones? Huh?

      • blockthiscnn

Well, swallows are migratory, that’s my point

        • Evil Otto

But then of course African swallows are non-migratory.

  • trixiewoobeans

Good lord, he and the rest of his faux journalist brethren are still walking around uninjured. I think that shows a high degree of responsibility with gun owners!

  • Just Another Guy

Considering the millions of us that own guns…and that we’ve not gone postal like so many Democrats/Liberals have done recently…I’d have to say well over 99.99%

Much more responsible and we take gun ownership much more seriously than “journalists” take their responsibilities.

  • Steve_J

Wouldn’t that question be best asked of the residents of Chicago?

  • bo1921

What % of the “media” are responsible do you guess? A small fraction of a small fraction?

  • Rich

Nothing like the number of automobile owners who shouldn’t be driving. Not even close.

  • beebop1952

I am probably more responsible than the thug who broke into my house but was too stupid to find the registered fire arm I legally possess. Making sure that it was still in the house is the FIRST thing I did with the police after they cleared my house. KMA.

  • JR48

Here’s the thing that Frum and people like him, don’t understand.

You can take the average gun owner and still them in a warehouse the size of a football field, filled with weapons and ammunition and….nothing will happen. Literally nothing.
For the murderous intent in an individual is present, whether or not they own a weapon of any kind. The weapons are irrelevant.

You could do that with me. Put me in a warehouse filled with crazy dangerous weapons…Forget AR-15s, fill it with rocket propelled grenade launchers, fully armed tanks, even nuclear bombs…and leave the cover to the red button open…

And I will sit there knitting, while sipping my coffee until my time to sit is up. I have no murderous intent. The average gun owner, has no murderous intent. For if we actually DID…Then America would look like something from Thunderdome and it does not.

Murderous intent is most often acted out in America due to gang or drug related activity. Take those things away and what do you have left? You have the occasional truly crazy person who gets a gun from either a criminal or steals it from a legal gun owner.

But you cannot legislate against “crazy”. Wish that you could because the world would be a better place, on so very many levels. But we as sane people, can do something about the crazy folk having access to firearms by having good safety practices and supporting mental health intervention.

That sort of logic would actually help the situation, but it’s not pithy enough to put on a self absorbed tweet.

  • JustLikeAnimals

@davidfrum What % of wannabe journalists are relevant and coherent? Half? Less?

  • JustLikeAnimals

62 mass shooters in the last 30 years, out of 80,000,000 legal gun owners. If you assumed, for the sake of demonstration, that all 62 were legal gun owners (they weren’t; MotherJones says something like 40 were legal), then 0.000078% of legal gun owners have committed mass shootings. Or, 99.999922% did not.

Libs need to find another pinata to punch.

  • http://www.vatican.va/ Rulz

We are responsible for our OWN actions.

At least you didn’t blame the gun, so I guess there is hope yet.

  • Red Fred

When you allude that 50% of gun owners are irresponsible, you really should, if you have any intention of being taken seriously, provide statistics for your assertion. But since you can’t, just go forward with you dumbassery, because frankly, Scarlett, we don’t give a damn.

  • Lisa 670

People like this say what they want without regard to the truth and fact. They are just hacks trying to get attention and unfortunately they get it. They get it from us and they get it from the other side, which is made up of people who too stupid to know better. Case in point: a potentially responsible gun owner is one who chooses not to own one
