Huge explosions reported at Mobile, Ala., shipyard; Two fuel tankers in flames

Multiple explosions and a fire on a fuel barge are being reported at the Austal shipyard in Mobile, Ala., tonight.

Fox10 News reports that the Coast Guard is on the scene. No deaths have been reported, although some crew members of the natural gas barge sustained injuries.

Nearby residents have been advised to shelter in place as a fifth explosion rocks the area.

The three reported injured in the blast are in critical condition.

Twitchy will update this post as details emerge.

I just finished reading this story on Atlas Shrugs and saw the breaking news.

“In this undated photo provided by the FBI, Randy Lamar Wilson,
26, in Mobile, Ala. Wilson, of Mobile, is a man who the FBI said wanted
to wage violent jihad in Africa.” Cont’d:

    • Macker

I am re-reading it and was just thinking about the same thing.

  • FreedomFighter

Have you ever seen such chaos since Obama has been in the White House???

    • Tabitha Bliss

Gotta say I knew it was coming & am afraid there will be more.. Just my gut. Always had that eerie feeling of a calm before the storm the past 4 years & now I have a feeling we’re gonna pay for the idiots that re-elected him.
Meanwhile he’s removing our nuclear protection while we have so many hostile regimes including China & Russia licking their chops.
Looks like Barack Hussein’s Babylon is falling.

Yeah, pretty sure Pearl Harbor was a little more chaotic, and the years that immediately followed it. Get real.

      • FreedomFighter

You’re comparing this to an act of war?? Dumb comment.

        • kobrien674

You obviously don’t know what an act of war modern day.

        • Mike Oliveira

In case you haven’t heard..We Are At War

        • larrybud

Perhaps you should read the context of the original comment I was replying to. The OP was suggesting that NOTHING has ever been as chaotic than the happenings under Obama. I’m just pointing out how ridiculous that comment is.

      • Brian Jenkins

it was and if you remember your history the government rounded up all jap americans and put them in camps hmmmm ok I am military and was stationed at pearl harbor that was sad but a one location event not much happened after but us making war machines so please you wake up and get real

        • Brenda Bammann

          Tell it like it IS!

        • larrybud

          So what’s your point?

      • Bob Young

so for it to get your attention, a whole city has to be blown up by islam jihadists, which obama doesnt even acknowledge

        • larrybud

Not sure how you come to that conclusion. I was just putting it into perspective.

      • kobrien674

Not really youngin’. Pls don’t spk out of your arse.

Amen! Fort Hood massacre, Boston, Texas Plant, now this just off the top of my head. So sad.

      • Saar

bp oil spill, fort hood shootings, 2 army generals forced to retire out of ‘scandal’s’, taliban resurgence, increased ROE’s for combat putting soldiers in danger,Benghazi, several other embassies raided, continued desiresuccess in removing missile shield defense in poland, helping the muslim brotherhood, funding islamic jihad in syria, funding Palestinian’s, doing nothing to curb iran’s enthusiasm to get the ‘nuke’ and wipe the jews off the earth, ignoring north korea’s threats to the us mainland, the economy, welfare fraud and entitlements, high profile left-wing shooting rampages, cash for clunkers, the stimulus, GM bail out, obamacare, gun grab threats, amnesty desire, thats off the top of my head im sure i missed quite a bit.

      • Ginawmson

Fast & furious, Benghazi, the Saudi national they are covering up, the takeover of healthcare, the largest tax increase in history this pass jan, Solendra, bail out, sequestration, general motors, now he wants open borders , these are just a few off the top of my head. If he was a republican he would be in jail.

    • Craig Jacobs

I hate the guy too, but attributing every random accident to him simply gives the left the ammo they need to paint conservatives as loons.

Please explain what connection there is between Obama and this story or the explosion in West. Now the bombing in Boston? That you can hand around the neck of DHS all you want.

Not trying to be a buzzkill, I just think that it’s important to stick to what we know, especially when what we know already is bad enough.

      • PennyRobinsonFanClub

I concur, see my other remarks. Operations with fuel barges are always considered hazardous, and although rare, they are known to go off like this.

        • GaylePutt

It’s just awfully coincidental that all this is happening like a chain reaction, one after the other. Some say there are no coincidences.

          • Craig Jacobs

Honestly, it’s not. If you assign the events a magnitude on a scale, and calculate the average (mean) number of those events for a given time period, say a year, a smooth distribution is just as unlikely as clumping.

      • Raina

try he stopping a pipe line that would stop them Fuel Barge

        • GaylePutt

          Excuse me??

      • Beth Lott

This. This may have been some kind of attack, in which case I will cheerfully blame Obama for it. But it may have been some kind of an accident, in which case Obama can’t be blamed. The guy sucks hard enough as it is. Piling on extras on top of that is just (even more) depressing.

    • MissDiane47

Hagmann & Hagmann have been discussing rumblings like this for months. You can find them through the Canada Free Press website.

    • GaylePutt

Yep, just thinking the same thing. Onnnnnnnnnnnnnnne after the other.

  • Beth Lott

Apparently last week was not bad enough. *sigh*

  • Mary Kay Beasa

Things are starting to look suspicious. I do not believe in coincidence

    • petsnpeopletoo

Starting?????? Well, at least your waking up

  • larrybud

So now explosions on a barge CARRYING FUEL is a surprise?

    • Patrick Jensen

No but what is odd is static electricity on the water.

      • kobrien674

        It is in context.

      • PennyRobinsonFanClub

No, not really. Take it from a merchant mariner. Fuel transfer is ALWAYS a considered a hazardous operation. Bravo flag raised, red lights on, no smoking or open lights on deck, even on regular dry cargo ships. Petroleum or LNG flowing builds up static electricity in the hoses and piping. Rule One is you have all the manifolds grounded to the hull , all metal-to-metal connections (nuts, bolts, flanges) snug, and avoid metal tools around them during transfer. And an empty tank is always more dangerous than a full one, because you’ve got a big empty space full of fumes and oxygen.

  • Ryan_Knows

“Mobile councilman William Carroll, on scene, says natural gas explosion triggered by static charge.” Seriously?? How could he possibly know that at this point when the fire isn’t even out.

    • PennyRobinsonFanClub

That’s usually the cause behind marine fuel transfer explosions. LNG or petroleum running through the cargo hoses causes static electricity buildup along them. If they’re not grounded properly, and you start getting vapors in the air around the cargo manifolds, yeah, it goes BOOM. Especially if one of your tanks is empty of cargo and full of vapors.

    • Infinite_Indeterminism

If he concludes that, he’s an idiot. If he says it as the most likely theory, he’s quite likely to be right.

And “empty” fuel containers/tanks are the most dangerous, because it takes very little heat to blow them up, whereas a full tank, burning off the top, would take some time before heating up enough to blow, giving firefighters a chance to set up cooling sprayers on them.

  • Iwonnd

    We need comprehensive harbor control.

  • confed2001

This is what happens when a communist, Muslim sympathizer is
allowed to steal an election, and the Republicrat Party does nothing about it!

  • MSM

They say bad things come in threes. Hopefully that’s our third for the year.

  • greenLibertarian

Not yet reported by cable news? Odd?

    • RegConserative

      Fox did !

Thanks! Still awaiting coverage out here on the west coast.

  • 3am

obama on the ropes with GlennBeck, who will deliver the knock-out punch!?!

  • 3am

If GlennBeck pushes the obamas hard enough there may be a big event very soon, maybe before tuesday.

  • Hope Johnson Cochran

I must be missing something. I live in Alabama and I don’t care for Obama but this was triggered by static charge from cleaning…it was an accident. If I missed an update.. Please accept my apology and send me the update. Thx.

    • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

      The barge(s) must have had a few drops of LNG in them… Otherwise, how could that little bit of static cause an explosion by itself? #NoBrainerAlert #LogicalLikeSpock Prayers for the injured, and their families. Jawamax 8<{D}

  • Nathan Stewart

Obama to accuse Sequestration loving Tea Partiers in 3……….2…………..1………

  • descolada9

Okay, this past week and a half is proving to be just a bit much. Please, please, please let all this be coincidence.

  • nc

There better be a very good explanation for this because otherwise some people might be inclined to be suspicious. Like I am right now.

Prayers for the injured and to all those affected by this nightmare.

    • Infinite_Indeterminism

Sh*t happens. Sabotage happens. Jihad happens.

The evidence needs to decide this, and anybody who concludes prematurely should shut up.

Personally, I suspect accident – but I’m NOT concluding this…

      • Michael Anderson (WB)

How can it be an accident? I mean they’re only transporting highly flammable materials in an environment prone to static discharge! It had to be sabotage.

        • Infinite_Indeterminism

I doubt it’s prone to static discharge – I rather suspect that everybody involved in the running of such barges make damn sure they minimize the likelihood of that, by any means necessary. Which of course does not mean that they are immune to the occasional discharge…

  • PennyRobinsonFanClub

Listening to the 911 recording, still unclear if the barges were carrying LNG or fuel oil. Believe it or not, regular fuel barges are more of an explosion hazard than LNG.

  • Hammerstrike

Another workplace accident completely unrelated to Jihadism, which in turn is completely unrelated to Islam.

    • Infinite_Indeterminism

Bullsh*t. (Regardless of who made that conclusion, you or someone you “quote”.)

As pointed out elsewhere, sh*t happens, sabotage happens, jihad happens – and nobody has had any chance of reviewing the evidence yet.

In other words: Conclusions are highly premature – even for the most likely cause…

      • Hammerstrike

You really believe the T Brothers acted alone?

        • Infinite_Indeterminism

I was commenting the barges – the Boston brats are a different case. And in that case, I’m not ruling out a third perp, but I’m not insisting on one either – I simply haven’t seen enough evidence on that topic to conclude anything (other than that the two brothers most likely are in the middle of that whole thing).

  • Rusty Shackleford

How fast can they blame the NRA/2nd Amendment for this?

    What’s Obama up to now!!

  • Right Wired

How soon before the protests against natural gas begin?
