News you can use? CNN demonstrates ‘cheap and deadly’ pressure cooker bomb

Has it really been more than 20 years since “Dateline NBC” showed us how to blow up a pickup truck using a simple model rocket engine? These days we have the Internet to show us how to build explosives, but it’s nice to know TV news is still there for us. How easy is it to make one of those pressure cooker bombs like those used in the Boston Marathon terrorist attack? It’s so simple, even CNN can do it. But just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

We’re sure CNN has a very good reason for showing how easy it is to build a weapon of mass destruction. We don’t know what that reason is, though. Kermit Gosnell’s trial was postponed today because the defense attorney called in sick, so they must have had some extra time to fill.

  • BlahBlah

This is just racist. Why make people go through the trouble of assembling themselves? Hand them out with Obamaphones!

    • Jillane Kent

Or equip the Obama-phone with a fast browser and 4G coverage. Gotta make people work, ya know?

      • michael s

I thought only black women had Obamaphones. Which is interesting because white guys did this, you know guys that look like they could be Margaret Thatcher’s sons.

  • Adela Wagner

After they pass the bill to stop selling gunpowder for reloading, so people can replace all the ammo that we can no longer get, maybe they will show us what to do with salt peter and charcoal. Naw probably not, they aren’t interested in HELPING the American public.

  • DanStlMo

I did not see the report, did they actually blow one up and if so is that not illegal?

    • TJ

It was done by professional bomb experts at a bomb testing site with no doubt full ATF licenses to blow thing up.

      • mickeyco

Rats. I was hoping they did it in the studio with no governmental approval. Oops. Forgot David Gregory & the magazine. Guess it wouldn’t have made a difference.

  • Stupidisasstupid does

youve got to be kidding me what idiot would show recipes for bomb making! i liked cnn but this takes the cake Goodbye! p.s. i hope cnn gets a huge fine!!

    • SpinMeNot

Can you imagine if Fox had done this? Wow …

    • Guest

Do you really want to open that can of worms? Fines for sharing information? Do you know how that sounds?

  • descolada9

For those disaffected teens and young adults who haven’t found out how to do this on the internet yet. Classy, CNN, classy.

  • Jared Mucha

Would you expect any better from CNN? We should have learned by now that you can’t fix stupid.

I believe in freedom of information but this is just wrong don’t you people at CNN have one living cell in that gord on top of your shoulder! REALLY move off of our Continent plz

  • Brent Guthrie

OK boys and girls…Today on Sesame street, we’ll show you how to properly frag Oscar the Grouch. He’s a tea partier, living in his garbage can and all.

    • SpinMeNot

Google Hamas Mickey Mouse … but that won’t happen here. It will be more like East Germany … “Report your parents … your neighbors … it is your duty to the workers …” blah blah blah

Sympathy for the Devil .. I don’t think so.

  • mickeyco

I truly would never want to see someone actually injured, but, darn, it would be cool if some fool built one while CNN gave directions. What would CNN be charged with?

  • Libertyworld

I tweeted: “Hard to be more STUPID, Erin of @OutFrontCNN @CNN than showing ANYTHING about a ‘cheap & deadly’ bomb today. TRYING to aid the enemy?”

Do progs, libs & lefties like these have some kind of political turrets syndrome the way they reflexively, compulsively side with anyone & anything out to hurt America & our allies? Have they swallowed some kind of cultural-self-loathing poison pill? Something wrong with these people.

  • Orlando Cee

Next week on CNN: how to make a pipe bomb with materials from your kitchen!

    • Native American Potato

That’s covered in the same magazine article as the pressure cooker bomb. Only took 5 minutes to find it using google along with all other issues that cover in great detail how to set up detonation devices as well as many other things.

I can possibly understand tv news networks doing demonstrations for ratings even though it is unbelievably insensitive but for them to broadcast which article in which magazine was used or how to construct one is just irresponsible journalism.

  • SpinMeNot

Did they provide a link to the Inspire! issue that provides detailed instructions?

    • Native American Potato

Only takes about 2-5 minutes to find the pdf of the issue with all the info provided by the various media outlets. Comes up on the first page of results.

      • SpinMeNot

        Sorry, that was sarcasm …

  • JR48

Oh my God. Maybe Geraldo is right.

    • SpinMeNot

stop, right there … we have 4 signs of the coming Zombie Apocalypse already; we don’t need any more …

  • disqus_FlD2VMR2RJ

When did Al-Jezeera buy CNN and start making videos?

  • TJ

It was not CNN that did it they just recorded what the professionals bomb experts do to study what a pressure cooker bomb does. CNN did not show what to put in and how to make it. I would hope that the professional investigators do a test firing of a pressure cooker bomb and study what it looks like. How best to treat the shrapnel and what to expect. This reports was just like what Mythbusters do when they blow stuff up they don’t tell how to blow things up but still do it.

    • Jillane Kent

Is that newsworthy or even terribly responsible in light of recent events? At the very least, it is salacious and unnecessary.

      • TJ

It might not have been newsworthy but yes it was semi-responsible to show that there are professional bomb experts that test the IED bombs used by terrorists. They knew it was a pressure cooker bomb not from the left over but they tested one before hand and knew what to look for to confirm it.

The ATF will make a bomb identical and then test a dog to see if they can even smell it. If it was cleaned and made air tight could the dogs even smell it. They will test hundreds of pressure cooker bombs in several ways but not have it on TV. They will leave that to Mythbusters who will blow one up in a few months and use thousands of matches not gunpowder.

  • Russ

Sorry for the correction… but a pressure cooker bomb is not a weapon of mass destruction…

    • mickeyco

How many people comprise a “mass”? 3 died and almost 200 were injured.

  • Republicanvet

Maybe it’s a good thing CNN was not at Gosnell’s trial or we would see them waving around scissors.

  • John Smith

I am not a huge fan of CNN, but do you really think their story should be suppressed? Do you really think that such information – available of hundreds of Websites – would otherwise not be available to anyone wishing to build such a bomb? A little common sense – IMHO – suggests that CNN was only trying to goose their ratings, not make life easier for terrorists. The Boston boys, ,after all, managed to build theirs with no CNN assistance. I understand the desire to be safe – what I don’t understand is the ease with which people are willing to toss away Constitutional rights – 1st, 2nd and 4th Amendment rights over the bombings in Boston, for example – with little apparent thought given to the precedent being set. CNN is not the only source for info about these bombs, and a case can be made that it’s a Good Thing for lots of people to understand just how easy they are to produce. Such knowledge will help people make better risk analysis decisions and have a better feel for what’s Out There that might do them harm. Those of you busy attacking CNN on this – Twitchy included, which should actually know better but has long surrendered its integrity to the self-satisfying impulse of being a click-whore – should ask just what did CNN actually do and is it likely to have sent anyone “over the edge.” CNN is sometimes ghastly, maybe even oftentimes ghastly, but the outrage about their bomb story is childish. Sit down. Take a deep breath.

That was the smartest, most well thought out comment in this whole thread. Perhaps a bit too long and full of multi-syllable words for most others who commented though.

  • Ken Alan Draper

Great! now I can make my own, Might come in handy if they’re any good for blowing out tree stumps. otherwise CNN has just became a terrorist training organization. of course you know they did this in the hope some tea party member would build one & use it. but tea party folks aren’t known for being violent, & that’s where they’re plan falls apart. Have to , wonder though, How many Adam Lanza’s, & Jared Laughner’s were watching this, saving it in their computers, the next drug riddled madman may bomb a school or a congressional town hall soon. CNN might be in severe legal trouble.

    • Guest

Yes, because CNN gave detailed i instructions on the procurement of materials, design, construction and deployment of an IED. No way that info is already out there and available to anyone who has the will and means to make a bomb. SMH

  • NRPax

Heck, why not just edit the information on the process here and there so that the would-be terrorists blow themselves up the moment the bomb is put together?

  • Bert Sterling

WHAT A BUNCH OF F*ING IDIOTS! CNN did NOT explain how to make the bomb. They described it as a pressure cooker filled with explosives and shrapnel, THAT’S IT. That’s exactly what Fox News was reporting last Monday. You people are MORONS.

  • Bert Sterling
  • John Thomas “Jack” Ward III

    Only if I wanted to blow up my mom’s chicken and rice (Sorry, Mom)… Jawamax 8<{D}

  • Guest

The info on how to build IEDs is out there & has been accessible to the american public for years. All CNN did was demonstrate how easy it really is to make them. Quit whining about it, & welcome to the real world.

  • Ms Anonymous

Is BATF going to charge them with making a destructive device?

  • Gary Freeman

If someone else sets off a pressure cooker bomb, I say we blame CNN. CNN didn’t care to blame the GOP for Boston, so if it happens again, their “how to be a domestic terrorist” segment should lay the blame for the next bombing on them.

  • Gail Wakefield

CNN will show you how to make a pressure cooker bomb, but will not question obama on Benghaz and what he is hiding…..CNN is not our friend

  • temple62

Next they will invite the Bomber and his family on the set to demonstrate!

  • michael s

I understand CNN brought Bernard Shaw out of retirement and had him make the pressure cooker bomb,to satisfy John King’s a dark skinned male did it?
