Why is DHS border protection office buying bagpipes?

America’s budget problems couldn’t stop the president’s star-studded Sequester Soul Show last night, and sequestration cuts don’t seem likely to stop the music at the Department of Homeland Security either. We’re still not sure why DHS needs all of that ammo, and now we’re really stumped. Roll Call’s Jonathan Strong is wondering too.

The DHS Customs and Border Protection Office requires bagpipes and drums for some reason. New bagpipes, too — none of those gray market bagpipes.

BlowHards! Pretty sure that is the rated “mild” version too!

  • nc

I think I figured it out. This from Wikipedia:

“A set of bagpipes minimally consists of an air supply, a bag, a chanter, and, usually, at least one drone. Most bagpipes have more than one drone…”

    It’s about drones!

    • Slapweasel

A bag of hot air that makes a lot of noise. Sounds like a politician’s best friend.

      • mdtljt

Maybe they’re hoping the ungodly screeching from said bagpipes in the hands of those who haven’t a clue how to play them will drown out all the happycrappy coming out of the mouths of those who would subjugate us. In my neck of the woods there are more people of Scottish decent than there are in SCOTLAND!! We’re used to that kind of caterwauling…what we can NOT abide is lying liars who have no respect for the Constitution & Bill of Rights…and yes I refer to ANYONE who tries to diminish our rights…whoever they may be…

        • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

I gather you don’t care for the pipes, in any event.

  • Bill Board

DHS needs something to blow since blowing smoke up the public’s A$$ isn’t working too well.

  • Clayton Grant

    Stupid pipebaggers!

  • http://www.facebook.com/cparishjr Curt Parish

Where does law enforcement and bagpipes usually intersect? Funerals, Tons of ammo and funerals. Interesting.

    • Justin Jurek

They expecting a bunch of Border Patrol agents to die soon? Well it wouldn’t surprise me with how porous the border is.

      • prlgrl

Or it may just be that they need to replace a number of Bagpipes, and got a good discount on them if they bought in bulk.

        • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

See my rundown above, for starters, pipers usually buy their own instruments, for another thing, a good set of pipes will last many many years — most pipers never own more than or two sets in their lives, and it’s incomprehensible that ten sets would need replacing all at once. Like I say, they’re either completely replacing the existing band’s gear — including pipes — or they’re outfitting a whole new band.

    • DeWalt

Interesting!!! Maybe the show will get started soon. Watch to see if they are hiring chaplains.

      • TocksNedlog

THIS administration is gonna hire additional chaplains?

        • mdtljt

Amen to that, Tocks!! Chaplians hired by a godless bunch of lib/progs? Not likely…

    • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

You’re really taking too narrow a view. There are many, many, police pipe bands, as well as fire dept., and they all do lots of parades, concerts, and competitions over the course of a year. It isn’t just funerals. Sorry, what you’re insinuating is just silly.

      • mdtljt

Sorry but you’re taking too naive a view. Yes, police & fire depts have bagpipes, drum & bugle corps & fife & drum corps…for PARADE & CEREMONIAL PURPOSES. They are local & funded by the municipalities they serve or privately funded. What justification is there for a FEDERAL AGENCY to have this? Are they going to perform at every police or firefighter funeral? What will be the cost for travel, room & board, practice time? I’d rather the locals take care of & honor their own. This administration is nothing but a bunch of user-losers who will capitalize on any death…bar none. Hell, I’d rather my tax dollars be wasted running shrimp on treadmills…at least there’s an outside chance of useful knowledge resulting from that oh-so-special bit of idiocy…

        • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

I think we’re talking two entirely different things here. Go ahead and question the appropriateness of the Border Patrol fielding a pipe band, but the idea that it is part of some nefarious plot is absurd. By the way, it’s been around for quite a few years already, and the Air Force, has one too. Not sure if the Marines still do or not.

  • CLChicago

Yeah, I’m thinking this is for funerals and the like.

    • jlbs

      Probably OUR funerals!

  • Jay_tea

And their ordering a tutor book for each bagpipe, sounds like big sister and her sorority sisters are picking up a new hobby…

  • perdogg

    The order has been cancelled.

  • OldmanRick

Ah shucks, folks. Nappy Poo just wants her own drum and bag pipe corpse – whoops, that’s corps – to play whenever she attends public events. After all her worship is the titular head of homeless insecurity.

  • TocksNedlog

Well, when you’re looking for a sure-fire method of keeping pesky neighbors away . . .

The more curious question comes when one examines the creeds of the targeted supplier on the interested supplier list. Check it out on the solicitation.

    • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

What do you mean? All I see is “This requirement is a [ Small Business ] set-aside .” Believe me, there aren’t a lot of megacorporations dealing bagpipe equipment to begin with!

  • http://randomanglican.tumblr.com randomanglican

Drudge is now reporting the bagpipe order is cancelled. I guess this was too embarrassing even for the Obama Regime.

    • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

Wow, yeah, that was quick. Went up yesterday, cancelled this morning!

  • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

Ah — I have a serious answer. I play bagpipes myself, and Border Control does have a pipe band, I’ve seen them at the New Hampshire Highland Games. Now, MOST places, pipers buy and own their own instrument, so this sounds like a perk.Unless maybe — as I’ve seen done sometimes — a band will purchase the pipes up front and allow the piper to pay the band over time. Sometimes necessary since a decent set of pipes costs upwards of $1000. But I can’t imagine they have so many pipers coming along they’d need to buy them in bulk!

    • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

Here’s a vid of them at a competition

No offence but they’re not an awesome pipe band.

Here’s another from those NH games a couple years back.

      • http://pennyrobinsonfanclub.net/ PennyRobinsonFanClub

Looked at the req. That is equipping for a whole new band, it looks like, from the bottom up, including practice instruments and tutor books, and right on up to uniform parts, just about all but kilts, belts, jackets, and caps. That list includes ten sets of pipes and four side drums! (What your people call snares.) That is BIG for a pipe band. Most bands are lucky to put more than that on the street for a parade.

I’ll cut one wee bit of slack, it’s the polypenco (plastic) pipes they’re buying, not real blackwood, but they’re almost as expensive. maybe 8 or 9 hundred instead of a thousand. But yeah, this is ridiculous.

They are buying bagpipes because they are ready to seize the Nation! Are we ready for that???? I hope so.

  • Donna

And yet a concert by the Army Field Band and Chorus, which had been scheduled to take place in my community last week, was cancelled a few weeks earlier. The cancellation was blamed on the sequester. So, the band and chorus are being paid to stay home and not perform while the government buys an instrument that not many people can play … oh, why am I even bothering to to try figure out why the government does anything?

  • http://www.facebook.com/dave.templeton3 Dave Templeton

I hope the bagpipes are for the death of the entire Homeland Insecurity Department and the Fast and Furious F**K Team -ATF!

  • D-man

Instead of building the wall they are hoping the sound of bagpipes will scare the Illegals from Border crossing.

    • adbj102

Remember you aren’t supposed to say: “illegals”, now they are prospective democrap voters! All ACORN needs is the names, they will fill in the absentee ballots…..remember all democraps get to vote several times!

  • umn_student85

The equipment seems to be for the USCG pipe band. The requisition suggests they have some new piping and drumming students coming into the band who will need to be outfitted with uniforms and instruments. The smallpipes and bodhrans are inexplicable. Also, it is most common for pipers to own their instruments, not to have them furnished by the band. Everything else looks legit, and for a service band that might not be able to gig under the banner of the USCG the same way a civilian band does, it is not surprising that they are sponsored financially in exchange for performances at Coast Guard events and ceremonies.
