Gulp: Sens. Manchin and Toomey set to unveil fed background check 'deal;' Tea Party activists upset with 'traitor'; Update: Heritage Action is not pleased

Journalists on Twitter were buzzing tonight about a looming deal on federal background checks cooked up by the recently evolved Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin and GOP Sen. Pat Toomey. A press conference will reportedly take place tomorrow at 11am Eastern. Stalwart conservative GOP Sen. Ted Cruz will be holding a separate presser.

Details. Devilish details:

After a day that found him at the center of the contentious national debate over new gun laws, Sen. Pat Toomey said a deal on background checks was near.

The Pennsylvania Republican said Tuesday night that he was close to reaching an agreement with Democrats that would give a critical GOP endorsement to the plan.

…A final agreement, brokered by Toomey and Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.), was expected to come together Wednesday. The plan, as of Tuesday night, would close background-check loopholes for purchases at gun shows and online, Manchin said, though the full details were not yet known.

Toomey and Manchin “continue to work on final details, but they appear close to a deal,” a Toomey spokeswoman wrote late Tuesday in an e-mail.

Manchin told reporters, “We really are getting there.”

Toomey has long opposed new gun laws but also has to think about seeking reelection in 2016. A deal on background checks could help his appeal in parts of a state that increasingly leans Democratic in presidential election years. His endorsement might also encourage Republicans from the Philadelphia suburbs to provide critical GOP votes in the House.

But Pennsylvania also has a strong hunting culture, and opponents of new restrictions on firearms are vocal and active.

Ahem. Paging the ACLU!

Tea Party activists are not happy with Sen. Toomey.

The internecine battle lines are drawn.

These phone lines are about to melt:

I assume they’re recommending a background check for mental illness in the federal government and shortly thereafter Joe Biden will be removed from office.

I’m sort of in shock at the moment. Toomey is my Senator and I have a lot of faith in him. I sat up all night during his race watching the returns. I really hope he doesn’t let PA down.

I worry for my Commonwealth. Part of our problem here is a) Philly and b) New Yorkers keep moving here.

    • Spatial Awareness

      Call him!!!

      • waltzingmtilda

I will. I get nervous calling but then I remember who these guys work for. The Tea Party got him elected, I can’t believe he would do something against the people who fought so hard for him. But then…politician, right?

I want to promote calling Toomey about this on the FB, but I have a weird situation going on there. One of my friends lost his nephew at Sandy Hook and I feel awkward talking about the 2A and how important it is. Yet he relentlessly promotes gun control and I bite my tongue because I guess he gets a pass…I want to point out how none of the existing laws nor the newly enacted ones would have prevented this, but I feel like I can’t because, you know, nephew. My heart breaks over these families, I guess I don’t know how well I would be able to see the big picture if (God forbid) I was ever in their shoes. He posted that he talked to Toomey today and that things looked hopeful. Ugh.

        • AaronHarrisinAlaska

Nope. Show no restraint in swatting what ever crap logic he tries to argue. Bad things happen because good men say nothing. His nephew was murdered by a man, not a machine.

        • putthehammerdown

…just ever-so politely ask him which law being voted on would have stopped/slowed down Joker Faced Boy ?
The answer [that even ‘Biden’ has affirmed] is ‘none of them’.[as you so succienctly mention]
The invective that most-likely will follow will be something you should imprint on your brain until you’re deceased.
It’s gonna happen ,…count on it. So,…. Either ‘pull off the band-aid’ or walk away. I suggest #2.

        Just posted the following:

“Don’t forget to call Pat Toomey in the morning
and remind him how he got elected. If he thinks turning his back on the
people who worked so hard for him will convert anybody, he hasn’t been
        paying attention.”

        Cue shit storm.

Pat Toomey – the latest in an increasingly long line of conservative traitors!! Why can’t we ever elect conservatives who will hold the line on the major issues? The libs have no problem standing firm on THEIR positions, but you can ALWAYS count on some faux “conservative” to blink, buckle, and give in!!

    • waltzingmtilda

Because they all want to stay in power once they get there. The Dims are just more blatant about it.

Besides, we really had no choice. it was him or….I don’t even think there was anybody else.

      • Rulz

Well, Toomey ran on conservative platform but it was a real nail-biter.

He’s probably thinking about all those people in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh who will show up in 2016 who vote democrat.

        • PopArt

And it won’t do him any good. The Libs will still be gunning for him (pun fully intended) and he will now lose enough conservative voters that he will go down anyway. Two names for him: Scott Brown vs. Elizabeth Warren.

    • Rulz

You really want an answer to that question?

Our conservative politicians sell out because that is EXACTLY what the VOTERS do!

What do you think happens when people like Toomey, or even Christie or Rick Scott—see the republican base sit on their hands in 2012 and their states turn a nice shade of blue?

If you’re not even going to bother to vote, why should they listen to you? If young people and minorities are going to out-vote the GOP base and seniors, why bother with the others?

That’s how politics has worked for millenia.

I sure wouldn’t listen to someone who won’t get their behinds to the polls, no matter what the reason.

Don’t even get me started on the Midwest. There’s people there who’d sell their souls for a farm subsidy or too look good at a PTA meeting.

      • Richard Rhodes

To say that you are a complete fool would be an understatement. Guess what idiot, I have been a judge of elections for several years and I live right outside of philthydelphia. I have yet to see an election where young voters and minorities have outvoted the GOP base and seniors. And by the way separating the two shows that you are a moron liberal. The problem is people don’t bother to get educated on where someone actually stands on an issue or their past.

        • James Atkins

He sort of has a point… 2 million less people that voted for McCain, voted for Romney. Im upset that Obama and other Democrats won in 2012, but more upset that conservatives decided to not go and vote because they could not identify with Romney. Those conservatives decided to stomach Obama et. al for another four years.

          • Hiraghm

Romney is a progressive. You’re condemning conservatives for not voting for one progressive over another progressive. Just where in this formula do we ever, EVER get ourselves a CONSERVATIVE?
If we keep supporting the progressives the GOP *forces* on us, just exactly what is their incentive to give us conservative candidates?

Better stomaching Obama for four years, after which we puke up Marxism once and for all, then steady, smaller, doses of progressivism til we’re slowly defeated by Marxism, anyway.

          • James Atkins

So, then you really can’t sit here and complain about Obama if you voted, by not voting, to put anyone else in his place…..Trust me, I’m not a Romney fan, but I believe without a shadow of a doubt he would have governed less left…

          • Jazzee

Obama is destroying the US…….wasn’t a fan of Romney either but hey better than the Marxist

          • James Atkins

And I do get your point about stomaching Obama, but really, that’s one hell of a risk don’t you think? The longer we go with Obama putting in place a vision that it is ok for the takers to take more and more..we quite possibly will never get back to sanity..

        • TugboatPhil

Sorry to shatter your image of the elderly, but they are more likely to be Democrat than you think. My 83 year old mom still thinks the Democrat Party is run by Frank Roosevelt. She’d vote for Dr Mengele if he ran as a D.

(See how I avoided the Hitler reference?)

          • Jazzee

OH God I am an older female and don’t even like the GOP anymore independent I am

      • Hiraghm

Oh BS. I am not obligated to vote for a Democrat-Lite simply to avoid turning the State blue. If the Republicans want my vote, run a conservative. As Toomey demonstrates, having an “R” in front of the name doesn’t mean a thing.

        • Guest

Then I hope you’ll keep your mouth SHUT when ObamaCare sets in.

      • Jazzee

Hey I am from the Midwest not a farmer and need a job by the way so don’t blame the entire Midwest……….we don’t like the farm perks either

    • Garth Haycock

Because those GOP politicians are pussies.

      • Jazzee

        AMEN AMEN

  • Rulz

    West Virginia:

I’ll never get tired of asking this:

Was voting for Manchin worth it?

First ObamaCare, and now your guns.

But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe like the Midwest, you’re more than happy to hand over your freedom to a hometown boy.

    • K-Bob

Hey, don’t forget the loss of jobs in the coal industry!

  • K-Bob

    Here’s the gun deal:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary for the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

That’s the entire deal, folks. And in accordance with Article VI, this is “the supreme law of the land.”

So let us assure Mr. Manchin and Mr. Toomey, that the law shall be enforced. This will happen regardless of what sorts of “deal” get put together.

    • Hiraghm

According to the 2nd Amendment, they can have a background check… and if you “fail” it… you can still buy arms.Nothing in the 2nd says you have to have a certain kind of background in order to keep and bear arms.

      • K-Bob

When the government puts you on a list, that’s a threat.

We don’t have to tolerate it.

  • EastValleyConservative

There is NO compromise on the 2nd amendment. NONE. This is treason.

  • Rusty Shackleford

I think I know who’s never getting elected in West Virginia ever again.

  • agroulx

The 2nd amendment is not up for negotiation!! Who the fk is Toomey to decide for all Americans?? How about Republicans tell the Dems to take their ideas and shove it…

  • agroulx

Why is it that the weak people on the red team are always the ones negotiating my rights? I can’t fkn stand Republicans anymore!

  • agroulx

Here is Toomey swearing to uphold the CONSTITUTION of the United States:

    Does he not remember this?

  • rennyangel2

A federal registry for every gun buying citizen in the country is a liberal’s wet dream but God forbid, if they’re asked to show some ID before they vote.

    The hypocrisy never ceases.

    • R1486

you state hypocrisy all while doing the same exact thing. So showing an ID to vote is necessary but showing an ID or passing a background check is not necessary to buy a gun?

      • putthehammerdown

Do you proofread before you post ? He is commenting about federal registration, and the[proposed] permanent storing of records, which by the way, is illegal.
Reading Comprehension not a big deal on your list of “Things To Do Today” ?

        • R1486

I think you’re missing what parts of his post I was referring to. I understand he’s talking about the federal registry but he’s also talking about showing ID to vote. My response was focused on his statement of asking to show some ID before voting in relation to this post about background checks.

  • notenoughtime

Toomey in PA and Manchin in WV are well aware that the states they represent will not be on board with legislation that punishes responsible gun owners. Obviously, something happens when they arrive in DC that turns their backbone and brains to mush.

  • James Snapp

Conservatives took down Santorum after he supported Specter (over Toomey) in a primary race. Toomey will face the same cold shoulder if he caves on supporting 2A.

  • froggy19510

The dam has a crack in it.

  • lillymckim

15 – 20 Republicans “may” vote lock step with the Democrats.
“We The People” will remember their names!

  • R1486

Passing a background check should be a no brainer when purchasing a weapon. You have to pass a background check to get most jobs. How would you feel about there not having a background check for a person being hired to look after children? You wouldn’t trust a person who failed a background check with your child so why would you trust him with a weapon?

    • AZWarrior

Based on you argument, I think a background check before voting is a no brainer. Hey, if we are throwing away the Bill of Rights, lets fix a lot of stuff.

  • dunst43

I thought there already was a deal…shall not be infringed.

  • lillymckim

Politicians no matter the party will rue the day in 2014/16 if they vote against
We The People & our 2nd Amendment rights!

  • saber86

they will pay bigtime in 2014-2016. the will of the people will not be brushed aside! people, vote libritarian! minimal govt, no pesky govt interference, maximum rights. i was a repub once, and after the election, i saw the hoplesness of the repubs. switch over while you can……. its the only chance the country has….

  • Belinda Henry

Toomeys a fool. He’s going to lose more votes then he would gain with this nonsense.

  • sktoday

I see Toomey will sell away the Country and leave it for the his Commrads

  • sktoday

Rulz you are so right…what a sad state this Country is in!! God Almighty help us
