Rep. Diana DeGette's office 'corrects' gun gaffe with … another gun gaffe

U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette put her foot in her mouth Tuesday by telling an older man at a gun forum that, armed or not, he’d “probably be dead anyway” if armed intruders broke into his home. She must have had quite an appetite for feet, because she followed up by questioning the need to ban high-capacity magazines, since they’ll be used up over time anyway once they’re fired.

Wait, she didn’t mean magazines, obviously. According to her spokeswoman, Juliet Johnson, firearms authority Rep. DeGette meant to say that clips would be used up, not magazines. The Denver Post reports:

“The congresswoman has been working on a high-capacity assault magazine ban for years and has been deeply involved in the issue; she simply misspoke in referring to ‘magazines’ when she should have referred to ‘clips,’ which cannot be reused because they don’t have a feeding mechanism,” Johnson said.

Thank you for the clarification, Professor Shoots-a-lot. Tell us, do you go skeet shooting “all the time” with President Obama as well? He probably taught you all about “magazine clips” and how they work.

Is my Nerf Gun automatic or semi automatic Diana?

    • Michelle

She won’t be able to answer that since most anti-gun folks don’t understand the difference and often confuse semi with fully. Just don’t paint that Nerf gun black, because they’ll decide it’s a “military-type” “assault weapon” because being black makes it look scary.

      • R0nin

        …the Racists!

      • camnpat

You are right. I was watching Elementary over a month ago and one of the characters gets his car shot by somebody using a fully automatic weapon. One of the other characters, in describing the scene, says he was attacked by a “semi automatic” weapon even though he is standing next to the car with a door full of bullets once next to the other one.

This wasn’t done with an agenda in mind since it was a passing comment in the episode and neither guns or anything related to them was referenced again throughout, but it goes a long way in showing how much misinformation there is out there. And it is people like this Diana character who probably get most of their understanding of guns from movies and TV and pretend to grasp the difference between form and function of a weapon.

        • Michelle

I have a few friends who are anti-gun and say they want “assault weapons” banned. I ask them to describe for me what an “assault weapon” is. They go on to tell me it’s a gun where the shooter can pull and hold the trigger while countless bullets are expended. I tell them that’s a fully auto weapon, they were heavily restricted (pretty much banned) back in the 80’s, are hard to find, are very expensive, tons of government paperwork to buy a used one. None, none of the mass shootings in recent history have involved a fully auto gun. Bzzzzz wrong answer, try again. They go on to tell me that an “assault weapon then means a semi-automatic gun.” I ask them to define what a “semi-auto gun” is…blank stares. Then they say they want high capacity mags banned, I ask them if 10 rounds is high capacity, they say no. So I explain to them (since none of them have EVER shot a gun), that in a matter of seconds I can drop an empty 10 round mag and reload and do it again – getting out 30 bullets with only a few seconds added to the time. I actually heard an acquaintance say that because Adam Lanza had a Glock handgun on him, she wants all Glock handguns banned.

          • JR48

You might want to add that the bulk of the millions of handguns in the country are semi-automatic. So to ban semi-automatic weapons would be to basically ban most but not all, guns in America.

          • Michelle

I have told them that exact thing. When they get into it with me about banning semi-autos, since they haven’t a damn clue what a semi-auto is, I explain to them the VAST MAJORITY of legally owned and safely used guns in this country are…semi-auto. One friend even said all anyone needs is a shotgun or a revolver since they’re not “semi-auto” I asked what she meant by that and she said only guns that require a manual action to chamber a bullet should be legal. So I gave her an education on double-action revolvers, then asked her would they be OK since she approves of “revolvers” or should they be banned because you don’t have to thumb the hammer to empty the cylinder? She had no answer. The facts absolutely baffle them and yet, I knock them off their soapboxes with facts each and every time.

          • JR48

And then there is the issue of speedloaders and revolvers. One doesn’t have to add a single bullet each time, but can load six at a time.

          • Ken Alan Draper

that’s the whole point of the confusion, to ban “by accident” almost all firearms in the country.

          • Miss Clairee

Michelle, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. These dipsticks in office trying to write and pass legislation on gun control is like me waking up tomorrow and saying, “It’s Thursday. I think today is the day I will go to the hospital and perform brain surgery on someone!” And idiotic gun-grabbing leftists just don’t get how stoooopid they are!

          • Spatial Awareness

My favorite question to the “mental giants” is…

Q: “What law would have stopped any mass shooting?”

            A: O.O ==>

          • Michelle

I ask them the same thing. I’ve asked them to tell me precisely what law would have prevented Adam Lanza’s mass shooting. I point out to them that it was actually gun laws that PREVENTED Lanza from purchasing a gun when he tried to. Instead, he chose to get to his mother’s guns. And while I do totally understand she is indeed a victim in the situation, I also can’t help but wonder why her guns, legally owned by her, weren’t secured in a safe accessible only by her (as is the exact situation with my own guns).

          • wwbdinct

Michelle – we still don’t know how the guns were stored in Mrs. Lanza’s home. While there was rampant speculation the first 24 hours after Newtown, the fact is that claim has not been verified and the “final report” has not been issued. We were supposed to get this report in March but now it has been postponed to June. The only thing they released were the search warrants. In any event, that gives the liars in the progressive agenda driven CT government ample to time to construct whatever story they see fit. At this point, I’ll hardly believe anything that they come up with.

          • Michelle

No, we don’t know how they were stored. But common sense tells me they weren’t locked in a safe accessible only to her. He shot her with her own gun in bed while she was sleeping. How did he get that gun? Was it in her nightstand for home protection? OK, understandable, but that’s what a biometric safe is for. That’s where my bedside gun is stored, only my finger prints can open the safe. I have it that way because where I live, if someone breaks into my home while I am away, steals my gun and uses it to commit a crime, I am in a lot of trouble with the law. How did he get the other two guns? I have a hard time believing they were in a gun safe whose combo was known only to her. If that was the case, as it should be with every gun owner, how did he get into the safe? We could speculate that he waked her and demanded the combo while threatening her with the handgun, but then we get back to – how’d he get a hold of her handgun? I think a lot of safe, sane, legal gun owners are sometimes too lax with how they store their weapons. The two kids who did the Columbine shooting stole those guns from a “locked gun cabinet” Basically nothing more than a wooden cabinet they smashed open and got the guns. I am not blaming Nancy Lanza, she was a victim too. I think she may have hoped for the best of her son, she was trying to help him and maybe she simply overestimated how much he could be trusted with access to those guns.

          • mike_in_kosovo

From reading some of the police reports, I think he shot her with the 10/22 .22 rifle that was found at the house.

          • Michelle

Whichever gun he shot her with, my point is – how did Adam have access to it? There are also reports that boxes of ammo were found in some drawers next to the “gun locker” I just don’t get any of that.

          • mike_in_kosovo

Again, from the reports, it appears that it may have been *his* .22

          • Michelle

Not quite sure why you’re not getting my point. REGARDLESS of who owned the weapon he shot HER with, EVERY gun on him at the school belonged to HER. Why did he have access to HER guns? He killed those kids and 6 adults with the Bushmaster and EVERY report out there says that gun was owned by and registered to Nancy Lanza. WHY did Adam have access to that gun when it wasn’t his?

          • mike_in_kosovo

I’m getting your point – my point is that you’re making the ASSUMPTION that the gun safe was locked. You’re making the ASSUMPTION that it was a combination safe and not a key lock safe, and you’re making the ASSUMPTION that Adam didn’t know the combination if it *was* a combination lock…and you’re making the ASSUMPTION that the gunsafe found in Adam’s room was the only one in the house.

          • Michelle

Well, the fact that he used HER guns to kill those people give me the indication that my ASSUMPTIONS are correct.

          • mike_in_kosovo

Ask your police officer how much weight ASSUMPTIONS carry in the courtroom.

            I’ll wait.

          • Michelle

I’ve made my point and expressed my opinion in a very concise way based on compelling evidence and common sense. You’re welcome to keep beating this dead horse, but you’ll continue without me.

          • mike_in_kosovo

Evidence was the mother owning the guns. Everything else was guesses based on what you THINK the situation was regarding access and everything else.
I’m *guessing* you didn’t like the answer from your policeman.

          • mike_in_kosovo

Everyone makes the presumption that the only guns in the house belonged to the mother.

            From the police reports:
“The white female sustained an apparent gunshot wound to her forehead. Investigators located a rifle on the floor next to the bed.”

“That, investigators also noted a smashed computer hard drive on top of a desk in what is believed to be Adam Lanza’s bedroom. Investigators also noted a gaming console and gun safe in the same room.”

And, just to clear up the weapons used B.S. for once and for all:
“That the deceased male was in possession of several handguns as well as a military-style assault weapon.”

          • Michelle

I don’t think that’s a presumption, every report by the police says all the guns were legally owned by and registered to Nancy Lanza. In CT, a person must be 21 to legally own a handgun, but not a long gun. Adam Lanza was only 20 yrs old. Even if the rifle he used to shoot his mother belonged to him, my question still remains – how did he get access to HER guns? It’s been reported he had a Glock 10mm, a Sig Sauer 9mm (both handguns, both illegal for Adam to own, both registered to Nancy Lanza) on him, as well as the Bushmaster AR-15, also registered to Nancy Lanza. I understand a gun safe was found in HIS room, by why were HER guns not locked in a safe accessible only to her. If HER guns were being stored in HIS safe, that goes back to my point – as a gun owner, Nancy Lanza was not 100% safe with the storage of her guns. My point is this – every gun registered to and owned by me is in a safe accessible to me only. I live with a police officer and guess what? He has his safe for his guns and I have mine and neither of us has access to the other’s safe. It’s not a trust issue, it’s a matter of smarts and being absolutely, 100% sure that at no time no one other than the owner of any gun in this house has access to that gun.

          • mike_in_kosovo

I only saw reports stating that the guns found at the school were registered to the mother. Do you have a link to anything stating that the guns found at the house were all registered to the mother as well?

          • radicallyalyssa

            So happy I read this.

          • Jazzee

it gets frustrating doesn’t it??? At least GOOGLE it before they speak about nothing….wow scary how dumb people have become

          • Michelle

It’s not how dumb they’ve become, it’s how ignorant they choose to be. I shut down their gun control arguments when they can’t even explain the difference in guns and magazines to me by telling them if they want to take away my 2nd Amendment rights, they at least ought to educate themselves on what it is they’re trying to ban.

          • Scott Anderson

It’s stupidity buttressed by willful ignorance. Even though you carefully explained all this to them, I am sure none of them retained these facts. Because it interferes with their religion.

          • TomJB

What Truman said, and even with you pointing out their ignorance, I guarantee they will not take the opportunity to educate themselves and continue to spew their nonsense in forums in which you are not present.

          • AMSilver

My favorite is when you’re having a conversation on the internet so they’ve got google right there to figure out the facts before they make themselves look like idiots and they don’t. I’ve presented arguments before knowing what my weak points are (and how to address them) and am shocked that they can’t do a 30 second internet search even to try and destroy my argument. For all their pretentiousness, they are intellectually lazy.

          • JustLikeAnimals

Yeah. Those GLOCK handguns are far more dangerous than the other handguns. Jeez.

Tell her to come over to my house and l’ll let her try to take my GLOCK.

          • JINNASH

Only one point I disagree with you Michelle. They aren’t stupid because of their lack of gun knowledge(these things are easily learned), they are stupid because they don’t know they have been emotionally sold. No one wants to admit they have been fooled, that’s why they keep coming up with excuses. When you ask them questions and they realize that they don’t have the answer, they become defensive. As someone who works in sales, I can easily recognize and emotional sale when I see it. And you are right about not having facts; that’s the point. They want people to FEEL, not THINK. This CO. ditz FEELS like she is smarter, eventhough she isn’. She FEELS like show knows more than the rest of us. We know better. If you ask the people who vote for her, usually they can not(or will not) say why they voted for her. Its similar to Obama voters; they don’t care about important issues; they only care about their “feelings”(IE gay marriage, govt. paod for birth control, etc).

          • Moe

Michelle, automatic weapons or machine guns as it were, were banned unless you have a license, since the 1930’s

          • mike_in_kosovo

Banned? No, just subject to a $200 tax stamp and a bunch of paperwork. Regardless, they were still being manufactured and sold to those willing to jump through the hoops. After the Hughes amendment to the FOPA, the only sales/transfers allowed were of those weapons manufactured before 1986…which creates the rarity and mad prices when one *does* come on the market.

          • camnpat

Yup. The excuses I heard from a liberal in his late 20’s was that if we reduce ammo capacity the shooter would need to reload more often and you then can escape while this goes on. Of course he didn’t want to hear that reloading can be done pretty fast with practice (and specially these mass killers which plan their attacks well in advance), and that while you react in the stress of the situation you will likely just end up exposing yourself .

When I presented the idea that I’d much rather have myself and people around me armed to stop a killer he dismissed it complaining that I was “too trusting on people” because the law abiding gun owners would end up killing more innocents in the crossfire .

And forget trying to reason with him with the fact that there is crime in gun- free zones (and countries) than in those with armed population. His arguments were completely emotional not unlike the argument in CO that guns “make some people uncomfortable”.

(To put him in context, this is a guy who is pissed off that Obama didn’t go all out with a push for universal health care and that federalism is bad because “each state shouldn’t do whatever they want. They should all do the same and push in the same direction.” )

          • Michelle

Yeah, the anti-gun folks put a lot faith in that whole “limit the magazine capacity so folks can escape while shooter is reloading” thing. It’s like they’re under the impression when a mag gets emptied, the shooter has to put down the gun, remove the empty mag using both hands, and insert a full mag using both hands – they have no concept because they’ve never been around guns. I have a close friend, a Liberal and we often have civil and amazing debates. She expressed to me that she doesn’t want the Government to take my guns, but she was firmly and adamantly behind the mag capacity idea because she thought reloading would buy the victims some time to escape. So, I have her a visual demonstration. I took my unloaded/cleared handgun, placed an (empty) mag in it, put two more empty mags in my waistband and showed her that in a matter of seconds how fast I could switch them out. She had no clue you could discharge an empty mag from the gun with only your thumb, not having to put down the gun, and using your free hand to get a new mag loaded. Seconds. I asked her, “How many people do you think escaped while I took a few seconds to do that?” She said, “None, and now I understand.”

      • understandblue

I think we could illustrate the point for her with a Pez dispenser. You can eat all the Pez – and you don’t HAVE to throw Bugs Bunny away afterwards – just get some more Pez! What a frightening woman.

If you show them a picture with two semi-auto rifles, one having a wood stock and looks like a traditional rifle and the other is all black and cosmetically looks all high tech – the Left screams they want the black, cosmetically high tech appearing gun banned because they think it’s an “assault weapon” or a “military-type weapon” And yet, although the guns look very different in appearance, they function in the exact same way. Their logic is hilarious. Wood stock rifle? That’s ok, it looks like a hunting gun. Black stock? ZOMG! IT IS AN ASSAULT WEAPON!

magazine clip is,” said spokesman Owen Loftus. “Rep. DeGette’s comments

          • VerminMcCann

I see DeGette’s….Don’tgets it. She’s used up both her brain cells.

  • Michelle

My guinea pigs just emptied their hay bin. I’m not sure it can be reloaded so they may have to starve.

  • JR48

Advice to her staff: Shut up, you’re making it worse.

  • TJ

Of course she meant Bullets in the first place so that once they run out of bullets there are no more but they have not progress enough to call for banning bullets so they have to lie and muddle to cover their real plan and not let that out.

    • Ced Truz

Except the question asked and the ban being discussed is about magazines, not bullets. But your right, that’s the ultimate goal.

    • Michelle

Tjexcite you just touched on my ultimate concern – ammo. The second amendment protects my right to own guns, but does not protect the right to own ammo and I am deeply concerned that when their attempts to ban weapons fail, they will realize they can go after the ammo and there’s not a damn thing we can do about it. That’s why I stock up, purchased reloading equipment and pick up every casing I drop at the range.

      • NRPax

Actually, it could be argued that bullets are an integral part of the weapon and banning them is illegal.

        • Michelle

I know that and you know that. The right to keep and bear arms absolutely means the right to utilize those arms if needed, and ammo is necessary to utilize the arms, but the Left gets sneaky and devious. I can see them trying to split hairs on the wording and trying to say “arms” means only the gun. I’ve heard a few of them say “tax the hell out of bullets, make them too expensive!” I was expressing that it’s a road I can see them trying to go down.

          • Lisa Jones

Maryland is attempting to apply a 50% tax on ammunition.

          • Michelle

I just Googled what you said and you’re right! Holy cow, see? THIS is the road I suspected they’d go down. I also see they’re trying to impose an annual gun registration fee to help fund mental health. WTF? Since when is mental health the responsibility of gun owners?

      • Walter Hefty

The right to bear arms applies to ALL arms. The bullet is an integral part of the weapon, and as such is covered by the Second Amendment.

  • Frustrated Teacher

It should be a crime for someone THAT ignorant to have ANY hand in writing our laws….

    • Roto

^^ And we have a winner!!!

  • talljohn777

Politicians are morons and the only people dumber are the ones who keep re-electing them…..

  • bonnieblue2A

Rep. DeGette had a thought once. After that one thought she threw away her brain.

Low information representatives are a reflection of the low information voters who send them to office.

    • Vennoye

Didn’t see your comment before I posted mine….we agree!!

  • APW

She is as bad as any other low information voter. Puh-leeze, can we start licensing our representatives? As in, take an exam in order to proceed to office?

    • Vennoye

We already know that low information voters elect people just like themselves!! We see it everyday!

  • Jim Denney

Diana DeGette has clearly expended any of the mental munitions she was born with, and her cranial clip is not refillable.

    • Dan

      LOL! Great comment!

      • Jim Denney

Thanks, I liked it too. Great minds think alike :-)

  • radicallyalyssa

It’s like my poor mother…She doesn’t understand a single thing about guns, so she’s scared of them. She argued with me about how my dad bought “another automatic rifle,” and how upset she was with all these “automatic guns” in the house.

    I still love her, though.

    • Walter Hefty

Well, did your father purchase an automatic rifle? If he can find and afford one (and get the FFA stamp), then it’s entirely possible for him to acquire one.

      • radicallyalyssa

He purchased a .22 handgun for me. LOLOL

        • Walter Hefty

lol. Some people will never understand, unfortunately.

  • wildwood15

I say let’s pass it to see what’s in it.

  • Jeff Allen

    What a moron!

  • wwbdinct

I understand the outrage over her ignorant comments about guns but how about some major outrage over the fact that she told the elderly man that he would be dead anyway? It was a disgusting and outrageous thing to say to anyone, let alone a senior citizen and she should be forced to resign for that alone!

    • Pablo

Isn’t it nice to see the contempt they have for their constituents on full display?

    • Kaya Hund

It’s a key part of Obamacare — slow down police response time and get rid of guns so we’ll have fewer seniors who need healthcare.

  • Donna W

The Two Dianes: DeGette and Feinstein. Weapons experts – they prove that magazines and clips are not just for beauty shops.

    • Kaya Hund

      Ha! Good one!

    • Jack Deth

      Nicely done, Donna!

    • ratizbad

      Well that done it!

  • Penmar

That woman has no business legislating anything. Because if she’s been working on this for years and hasn’t learned a darn thing, it’s time to retire!

  • Connie Hutcheson

It’s bad enough that she is talking out her azz but to also then derespect a senior citizen with her remarks just shows us what kind of person she is. Shame on you. Hope your grandkids show u that same disrespect. Give up ur seat to someone who knows what the people want.

  • sleazyrider

Surely there’s some dirty dishes needing washed…congresswoman!

  • Paula Coyle

Maybe she meant to say “boxes of ammo” – as in we need to ban the purchase boxes of ammo. I’m sure that’s on her agenda anyway.

  • Cfranke

    De get the F out!

  • RalphTheCat

This woman should contact MArk Kelly and see if she can arrange a mental threesome with him and his wife. Yu know, the wife who was shot. The incident that moved him into the forefront as an “expert” on gun control?

All of them should just shut up and stop showing their ignorance.

  • $36544368

Seems Ms. DeGette only opens her mouth to change feet!

  • Gothguy

    The stupid, it really burns!

    too stupid to take seriously.

  • Womaninwicker

Learn before you vote please. Try starting with the Second Amendment and then perhaps a good basic manual on guns and what they really are. If you weren’t misleading the American people this would be funny. Didn’t you take an oath to ‘protect and defend the Constitution’?

  • $27789750

She was snotty to the old guy,the far left sneering smile and rolled eyes. Don’t know whose Congressrat she is, but they’d be smart to get rid if her.

  • Thomas Clayton Thomas

You just went full retard. Never go full retard.

    • mike_in_kosovo

Do #LowInfoLibs have any setting *but* full retard?

  • Lisa Krause Tobert

Thanks for schooling us gun toting, religious fanatic, war mongering racists. You think If you had been working on an assault weapons ban for years, you would know something about them. Here’s a thought, have one of your “staffers” do some research like say, the internet, or a book or a gun shop… before running your mouth.

Ronald Reagan – “It isn’t so much that liberals are ignorant. It’s just that they know so many things that aren’t so.”

Not surprising they don’t understand the constitution either….

Behold those that believe they are our equals…

    • mike_in_kosovo

      They don’t believe they’re our equals…they believe they’re our *betters*…

  • bo1921

The lesson is: In most every career path an individual takes, you HAVE to know what you’re talking about or doing. The exceptions, of course, are politicians who want complete control over people, while knowing little or nothing. Amazing that they’re allowed to get away with what the do.

  • ceemack

You can’t reload a clip? Good God, the business opportunity I’ve been missing! I can make moon clips for 610s and 625s and Garands, and as soon as they’ve shot up the rounds they have to come back to me and buy more! I’ll be RICH!

  • junctionshamus

Sometimes when you’re up to your ass in alligators, you might want to remember the first objective was to drain the swamp. If it’s a DiFi or a DiDe – and a Democrat, you’re going to have problems with it…

  • junctionshamus

Wonder if the only magazine she had on her mind was “High Times?”

  • Promontorium

Although the reply is idiotic in its own right, it’s also demonstrably a lie, because she said clips from the get go (not knowing the difference is not the same thing as “meaning to say”) and the law isn’t against clips, so even if clips were disposable, what the hell does that have to do with a MAGAZINE ban?

  • Roto

Quick, somebody call her office and plead with them to ban high-capacity magazines for black powder rifles!!

  • mhojai

They would rather continue to support their dogmatic ignorance for sake of their egos and/or personal power over others.

  • cypress

I guess this means CO will be after our Mosins too now.

  • Libertyworld

Thank-you so much, you HYSTERICAL woman, literally and figuratively.

  • Me

You in Colorado are getting exactly what you voted for. Enjoy!!

  • caveman1313

clips can be reloaded. what a idiot.

makes you wonder how much other legislation she voted for or against that she didn’t understand

  • JustLikeAnimals

ANOTHER politician proving, unequivocally, that stupid knows no ends.
