Time to ‘ban dogs’? Vicious assault dog belonging to Mark Kelly’s daughter kills baby sea lion

Time for a national conversation on assault dogs?

Gabby Giffords, her gun-grabbing husband Mark Kelly and his 18-year-old daughter were vacationing in Laguna Beach last weekend when things turned ugly. The daughter’s 65-pound bulldog attacked and killed a baby sea lion.

JWF asks:

[W]hy didn’t Mark Kelly keep better control of this animal? Why does someone need such a big dog? Is he trying to prove how manly he is or something? How many more sea lions must die?!?!

If we can save just one sea lion from the Kelly/Giffords family …

We eagerly await Jim Carrey’s ditty about dog owners and the size of their private parts.

  • Fire and Adjust!

Any dog that can take more than 7 bites at a time is an assault dog, and should be outlawed

  • Scott Carroll

The only people who should be able to own a dog that big are the military and the police.

    • Maxx

Forgive me if you’re being sarcastic and I don’t recognize it. If it’s the former, good laughs. If you were being serious, this occurred due to poor training.

The more powerful the dog, the more important it is to have the relationship between owner and pet firmly established. Clearly in this case, the dog controlled it. Even as they beat the dog, it would not immediately release its bite, indicating a dog trained poorly or worse, not at all. If all it took was another animal (even an ocean one) for the dog to escape its owner’s grasp, the owner had no business walking it in a public area.

That sea lion could very well have been a small child playing in the sand, reaching out to pet the dog.

And I agree with others. If this had been Palin’s dog, MSNBC would be all over this.

      • kyleco

Pssst…I think it was a joke.

        • Maxx

Upon second reading, clearly….and a late laugh from me. However, my secondary point is my main one. This girl had no business walking a dog on a public beach if she is that incapable of handling it.

          • Squirrel!

            I concur.

      • Steve Harmon

Oh, come on Maxx, reactionary banning is in vogue these days. I’m 6’2″ and have been using firearms for most of my life and have no problems them. The Libs say I don’t need a magazine over 10 rounds. I say to them, “no one needs a dog over 10 lbs, except law enforcement and the military. Who’s with me? “No mag over 10 rounds, No dogs over 10 lbs”! (Repeat as necessary in chant form)

        • Thevelvetkitten

No libs are screaming…it is the bad owners fault when it comes to dogs..which I agree but they never apply that logic on weapons..they are irrational and lack the ability to see the similarities in responsible behavior for things across the board.
Please don’t get them started on large breed dogs…they are my protection. I am responsible dog owner/trainer and I support the same for guns..But they don’t need encouragement to see new emotional shiny things to chase.

        • RightThinking1

          Dear Mr. Harmon:

It has been brought to our attention that you are taller than some others. Under various rules issued by the EOC, DOJ, DOE, USDA, and certain applicable Executive Orders, you are hereby ordered to report for Federally mandated personal burdens which will serve to bring you in line with current mediocrity Equality Mandates.

          Handicapper General

          • E Quilibrate

            That’s gonna leave a mark.

      • Miss Clairee

Yeah, Maxx! Reactionary banning is all the rage! Hell, I got rid of all my blankets after the Oberlin assault blanket scare…..and got rid of all the sheets too, in case they had been negatively influenced by the blankets. We now sleep under beds of cotton balls. But don’t worry, we dyed all the cotton balls a different color other than white, cause sleeping under “white only” cotton balls would just be downright racist!

        • Thevelvetkitten

        • RightThinking1

Oops. I’m pretty sure that just saying “cotton” is over the line. I’ll have to check the Chris Matthews Handbook of Dog Whistles to be certain.

          • Miss Clairee

Oh, please do. I’m sure the mere word “cotton” invokes hysteria regarding slavery in the minds of LIBTURDS, despite the fact that my mother, her siblings and cousins are white and picked cotton every day from sun up to sun down from the age of 5 years old and up…..as was very common in the South! But noooooooo, cotton is a racist thing!

          • RightThinking1

            Miss Clairee

Well…, it is possible that your parents or grandparents read Uncle Remus stories to you also, in which case, any mention of foxes or rabbits might set off alarms somewhere…, well, in Chris Matthew’s head anyhow.

I’ve noticed that the Left/Progs wasted no time labeling Dr. Carson ‘Uncle Ben’. Not that they are vicious racists, you understand.

I have yet to see anyone label a black person as an ‘Uncle Remus’. I think the perpetually offended have a problem there. Uncle Remus was a dispenser of folk wisdom and morality tales, whose validity lies in his presentation. The race-baiters are at a loss. They are offended…, and yet…, and yet, they know the character to be an example of integrity and wisdom. What to do? Well…, nothing…, unless it is convenient. NEVER, EVER, refer to some sticky, knotty, should-be-avoided problem as a ‘tar baby’. Should you do so, the race-baiters will skip right past the wisdom of Uncle Remus and land on your ‘racist’ neck. As they probably will on mine now.

Update. CNN runs Opinion Piece today:

“Ben Carson, admirable man with a mistaken philosophy”

It begins:” Like giddy teenagers, Republican activists have fallen for another charming, personable and accomplished black conservative. Dr. Ben Carson
is the newest object of their crush, which was born of a desperate need… blah, blah, blah”

            Nope, no bias at CNN….

          • Miss Clairee

Nope, no bias whatsoevah! Great comment, btw!

          • E Quilibrate

Uncle Remus was my favorite “uncle” while I
            was in elementary school.

          • RightThinking1

You will be placed on the Sensitivity/Re-education camp list.

      • AZWarrior

I am sure it was sarcasm but seriously you make an excellent point. Responsible pet owners train their animals to ensure good behavior. To do otherwise is not only dangerous to others but to the pet itself. The video clearly shows that the dog’s owners are irresponsible and thus their criticism of others for “gun irresponsibility” doesn’t care much credibility.

Imagine if it was Palin’s dog. Dog would of been skinned alive by now. Palin in jail, Sea Lion was in protected reserve, leash law was violated.

It’s called ‘ridicule to order’ and you fell for it hook, line, and sinker.
Here’s some more for you :
Where did ‘the safety’ for the dog reside and why didn’t Mark ‘engage’ it ?
My gun can’t do what I tell it to, all by it’s lonesome. My dog only does, what I train it to do.
You can have my dog when you can pry it from my 30 piece bag of ‘beggin strips”.
When dogs are outlawed, only outlaws will have dogs . [or sumthin’ like that]
Who **Needs** a large, vicous puppy anyway ? Are you just ‘making up’ for your ‘personal sexual deprivations’ ?
First, they came for the dogs, and I was silent.
Then,… they came for the cats, and there was no one around to to alert me…….’cause all the watchdogs were gone …….

Anthony, we got the gun ban killed didn’t we? Nice try.

      • mike_in_kosovo

If the parallel can be so easily made, then you should know how completely *idiotic* your wet-dream gun control laws are.

Being the #LowInfoLib you are, the point was obviously lost on you.

      • LegalizeShemp

You mean like the woman who was savagely killed by her neighbor’s two Presarios in SF? Looks like their point has more legs than yours sir.

      • Steve Harmon

That’s right Anthony, “dying tea party”, you just keep telling yourself that, then you can snuggle up in your little blankey and go nigh nigh knowing that the “big bad tea party” is all gone.

Just imagine if it had been your dog, or my dog, that had killed a protected species. The dog would have been instantly impounded by animal control and then put down, and you or I would be facing huge fines and/or jail time. I don’t see any mention of Kelly, Giffords or the dog’s owner facing any of this.

Like all other laws, these laws are only for us little people.

      • https://twitter.com/tweetyuo Tangchung

I agree spot on, we would need a lawyer, heavy fines possible jail.

That’s a poorly trained dog or one that has issues, such as an over-aggressive prey drive or resource guarding, and shouldn’t be out in public. A well trained dog wouldn’t have broken it’s leash to begin with and, even if it got loose, would have responded to recall commands and “leave it” commands.

    • Thevelvetkitten

  • disqus_e2F2oUH6C7

If it was anyone else’s dog, they would probably be trying to put it down. Hope they have to pay a substantial fine.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.a.white.16 Joseph A White

Maybe we should limit all dogs to 7 teeth and outlaw these vicious “assault dogs”?? I thought that California had leash laws on the public beaches. They did when I lived there. And aren’t California Sea Lions protected?? Inquiring minds want to know. But alas and alack…as Hilary would say, “at this point, what difference does it make??”

  • CatHerder

The opportunities for ridicule of the ‘assault’ mentality just keep multiplying, don’t they? Looks to me like the lefties attempt to demonize scary-looking guns is going to haunt them for quite a while to come.

  • pajamakat

Why wasn’t this dog on a leash ? Maybe he got pleasure out of watching his dog kill a baby seal. I don’t trust this guy at all. Nor his wife. I am sorry she got shot, but I have a feeling she is not capable of thinking for herself.

    • Jim Denney

She wasn’t capable of rational thought BEFORE she was shot.

      • pajamakat

I’m glad you said it Jim. I was trying to be nice. But I really don’t think she is capable at all of thinking. She talks, walks and acts like a child. Enough. I am sick of her and her PHONEY oh so caring husband.

Yep! They (or HE at least) is just looking for his 15 minutes of fame! Much like many others!

  • brewerandpatriot

Sequestration contributed to the poor quality of that leash.

  • conservativemomma

What if that had been a child instead of a sea lion? Wonder if Kelly’s daughter has the dog as protection instead of an evil gun?

  • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

I think you all are missing the point here. Why didn’t the sea lion urinate or puke on the dog? Couldn’t the sea lion have just blown a whistle while waddling to a call box?

    • Jim Denney

Update just in from DC: Gabby’s BFF Debbie W-Schulz says dog watched “Faux News” B4 walk, speculates on possible link to K-9 anger issues.

She also plans to introduce a bill to provide “free” whistles to sea lions (pending restoration of sequester cuts).

      • http://twitter.com/thetugboatphil TugboatPhil

So the “dog” was really a Wacko Bird??

You mean she will get whistles to the sea lions before getting her staff some food as they are starving from the sequester lol

    • Miss Clairee

Said sea lion obviously had not been taught the fine art of spontaneous menstruation in order to prevent attack! And where was its assault bleach?

    • rogueco

Word is that Kelly was merely demonstrating how easy it would be for someone to acquire a dangerous animal. Apparently, puppy adoption paperwork allows just about any nut job to own a dog.

      • $7610427

Wait, wait…I thought it was easier to get an assault weapon than to adopt a puppy? Oh…I’m so confused… Where is MSNBC? I need to be told what to think.

The dog didn’t belong to either Kelly or Giffords, it belonged a relative of Giffords and Kelly helped after the owners couldn’t get the dog off of the sea lion.

The real story is the store that Kelly bought his rifle has recinded the purchase on the basis of his intended purpose. I guess he didn’t mention it was publicity stunt. The store is donating the rifle to raise money.

The headlines say “Giffords Pulls Daughter’s Dog off Sea Lion.” Should it not say “Giffords’ Family Dog Kills Sea Lion?” What is the fine for your dog attacking and killing a sea lion (a protected species) on a California beach? • Thevelvetkitten

Dogs are regulated more than guns? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA..

Actually they are not regulated . Anyone can breed or buy them. No one regulates that one must train and socialize their dog properly.or learn to train/handle it properly..on or off leash. Then you take a breed that has a high prey drive that is required of working type breeds, without training or knowledge, then turn it loose..well you have a recipe for disaster if the situation presents itself. My dogs are trained to the highest levels of training and I don’t turn them loose in public outside of my land and I know my dogs will spit out a steak or drop on a dime on one single command.

Dogs that have been bred by irresponsible breeders tend to have genetic behavorial issues such as exaggerated prey drives. This often times is what triggers all those attacks you hear about that are only heightened by uneducated or irresponsible owners. This is what happened here. Responsibility of owning a dog or weapon are much the same. Some have it..some don’t.

Besides guns kill far less than say car accidents or heart disease so by your own admission you have seriously flawed your argument.

  • Thevelvetkitten

I bet you are also one of those that screams the loudest how it isn’t the dog but the bad owners fault.. and how they shouldn’t be banned. Yet you don’t apply the same logic when it comes to weapons. That is the point this article is making through example which escapes your simple mind that lacks even the most basic of critical of thinking skills, sadly.
